vs996 root with Frankenstein bug? - LG V30 Questions & Answers

Has anyone figured out how to root a Verizon vs996 phone? I read on the internet its maybe possible using the Frankenstein bug but I cant seem to find any detailed guides on how to root my vs996 using the Frankenstein bug. If anyone could point me to detailed instructions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Find and read the wtf thread. Go to the very first post on it and click the link. That link will take you to the post that gives you the guide and will answer all your questions. I am a Verizon customer with the vs996 phone currently running it on a rooted stock us998 rom. Read that post (#193) very carefully so you understand what needs to be done.
Here it is.

Can anyone explain how, in the video, the phone was booted into the screen he's in to run the commands against the phone? The screen says "restart" in large font.

You haven't looked very hard. In the Guides section, WTF instructions thread is one of the most frequent in this forum. It's clearly titled:
(WTF...!) LG V30/V30+/V30S Bootloader Unlock & Root Method (With Clear Instructions)
"Frankenstein" isn't a bug. It's a procedure to temporarily convert to another variant. Either used to SIM card unlock a phone and/OR (in this instance) to get fastboot flash commands.
"WTF" however is an exploit to allow us to unlock the bootloader on early Oreo firmware. So you use Frankenstein (if necessary) to convert to variant with fastboot flash commands and then use the early Oreo firmware to unlock the bootloader. THEN, you can either convert back to to the variant you came from and/or upgrade to newer firmware. Some phones don't need this Frankenstein, if they already have fastboot flash commands. But yes VS996 does.

On post #1 of that WTF thread, you apparently ignored the
HUGE LINK FOR THE INSTRUCTIONS.
That's the link to post #193 of the quite detailed instructions, where all your questions will be answered... ALL V30/V30+/V30S on the planet can be bootloader unlocked and rooted. PRINT OUT those instructions and read them. PRINT THEM OUT.

And it doesn't do any good (right now).
T-Mobile H932 has crippled ADB.
There's a T-Mobile H932 specific thread where they're trying to get root and stuff:
T-Mobile LG V30 H932 | Progress Towards Root/TWRP/ROMs (not achieved yet)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3690577
Then, when you finish that, go read this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3665927
That last thread was started back in early September -- and even then on the first page, we detailed the issue T-Mobile LG V30 would have, based on the T-Mobile LG G6.
Both the LG carrier unlocked versions have official bootloader unlock and root, while the T-Mobile model has a bootloader unlock but most of the ADB flash commands are removed. The T-Mobile LG G6 STILL doesn't have root.

yes as always for LG TMO's , but probably you still don't have write commands enabled on Fastboot.
You should only be able to send "read" commands from there

Question
If i will try to unlock the H930G Israel model (no carrier) using this method (fastboot) - will i theoretically have write commands?
the H930G italy model is the only one to get the bootloader unlock for now.

You can try on the LG Developer Bootloader Unlock list website, but when you put in your IMEI or serial number or whatever they go buy, they'll probably say the phone isn't eligible. Same way U.S.Cellular version is not eligible...
But wouldn't hurt to try. LG system could have a snafu and you might very lucky.
Goodbye warranty for no benefit. you have no fastboot commands, so it is useless to unlock on your phone model.
and the phone keeps track of if the bootloader has been unlocked, even if you re-lock it.
That might be a big deal for some but the way I go through phones I'm not too concerned.

Yup.. Didn't need unlock.bin.. Just like you said.. Strange.. Has anyone tried using write commands or is everything I'm reading assumptions? I can't find proof of What was tried anywhere.. What if twrp recovery worked? No one can confirm really unless it exists.. What if writing recovery is one of few commands that might work.. Any information would be appreciated..

What you did is useless. Been discussed for a hundred pages elsewhere. Notice you've dug up an old thread from December 2017?
Right now (September 2018), every V30/V30+/V30S on the planet can be bootloader unlocked and rooted ----except for T-Mobile H932. Been that way since mid-May 2018, when we discovered the WTF Oreo bootloader unlock expoit.
H932 does not have any fastboot flash commands, so cannot be rooted. Also, since it has different RSA encryption it cannot be converted (Frankenstein) to carrier unlocked US998 which does have fastboot flash commands, like all the other North American variants.
See post #2 of this thread you are in for more information. I notice you quoted post #1 but didn't quote post #2? There were only 7 posts in this thread before it died off! If you can't find proof it's because you haven't actually looked... Here's post #2, from December 1, 2017:

Go read THAT referenced thread, which is current, and is up to 148 pages now. H932 may get root eventually, but right now still impossible.
Also, you could have bought a carrier unlocked V30 and use it on T-Mobile and have root. Or you could buy a mint LS998 for just over $300 off eBay, convert it to carrier unlocked US998 and have root.

Can I update OTA AliExpress Refurbished US998+ V30?

I have a V30+ US998 and came with Nougat US99810c. It anks for update via OTA fron US99810d. But is from AliExpress and in the logo when you turn on the phone just shows V30 and not V30+. But it has 128GB. If I update OTA will give hardbrick? What you recommend?

What does it matter if it was originally US998 V30+ or not? You said it has US998 firmware on it NOW, and you said it has 128GB internal memory. That fits the definition of US998 V30+.
To be honest, if it still has Nougat on it and V30 showing instead of V30+, that's symptoms of dealer probably Frankensteining (via Octopus box) from some other North American variant to US998 -- then not "finishing" the job to update to Oreo. But at this point in time, it's a US998 with 128GB internal memory.
All North American variants are compatible with other North American variants -- EXCEPT for T-mobile H932. Since you are already on US998 firmware, then it was previously either H931, H933, US998 (64GB), AS998, LS998, VS996 -- but doesn't matter. Maybe originally it was even 64GB US998 and they swapped in 128GB internal memory from another phone. Really doesn't matter at this point in time. You never owned that previous phone, whatever it was. You NOW have US998.
(Yes, I could tell you how to find out what the phone was originally, if it was something different -- but it's not relevant to this current discussion about updating to US998 Oreo and would only confuse you. So, let's not go there.)

Sorry about my ignorance. But in case my phone is a frankstein, what happen if I upgrade OTA? In the case, is just asking a security update. The frankstain version upgrades OTA narmally? In the case I chose to use LGUP. I have a patched LGUP (that I used to root my V20 H910 that I sold) and can be use partition DLL option? I think is more easy to use OTA, because I don't have to format my phone. In the case, can I know if is frankstein using the IMEI? OR IMEI can be modified?

If it's giving you the option of OTA for security update, you can take it. See what version you are on after that. If it gives you Oreo OTA option, you can take that.
After Nougat 10d is Oreo.
No, most Frankenstein won't give you OTA update options. So that means maybe do you have original US998, but perhaps they just did something to update internal memory to 128GB...

Stay on 20b for right now. To unlock the US998 V30+ bootloader you need to be on 20a or 20b, to take advantage of the early Oreo bootloader unlock exploit we call "WTF".
AFTER you unlock Bootloader, install TWRP and root, you can update to most recent Oreo 20h using TWRP flashable zips.
Read the WTF instructions thoroughly. Even print them out if you can.
You're on exactly the version firmware you need right now for bootloader unlock.

You can always go back to any previous OS. BUT for bootloader unlock you need to temporarily be on early Oreo. Please read the Root Sticky.
So yeah, if you update to Pie now (I assume you mean via OTA) without first unlocking your bootloader you will have to go back to Oreo 20a or 20b to be able unlock your bootloader and root.
__
Not sure why your are asking about re-locking bootloader again, but for that (like I said before) you have to make sure you're on full stock KDZ. THEN relock it with fastboot commands. You can't have TWRP custom recovery when you do that.

I understood. In the case, can I go directly to Android Pie in this tutorial? I make a backup of my system and wipe all data and clean operational system and reboot in recovery mode with only TWRP, then I install the Pie zip file and then, the files that you recommend in your tutorial. In the case I can have my phone root with Pie. I did that with my old V20 to Oreo, but I had to install the TWRP before reboot. In the case, can I do with V30?

Fastboot Flash isn't giving any respond

I can see my device 'fastboot devices' I can see my device as fastboot device. But even if I enter 'fastboot flash' command, I see no respond, CMD freezes immediately so I can't flash any img to my device. For example when I use 'fastboot flash recovery twrp.img', CMD will freeze up. After disconnecting the device, CMD continues up and I see:
Code:
target didn't report max-download-size
sending 'recovery' (30324 KB)...
FAILED (command write failed (No error))
finished. total time: 0.017s
output.
EDIT: I asked these questions based upon the post above. We need more information. Many variants don't have full fastboot flash commands. For those that do, you may need to change ADB installations or use a different computer. AMD Ryzen doesn't work well with V30.
_________
What variant do you have? What firmware are you on?
Further questions... Have you already bootloader unlocked your phone? You have to unlock your bootloader before you can install TWRP custom recovery.
Instructions on how to do both are in the WTF thread.
Also if you've unlocked your bootloader, you know that many V30 variants don't have fastboot flash commands.
Which is why you need the WTF instructions to unlock your bootloader and install TWRP custom recovery.
Unless you have a T-Mobile H932, in which case there's an alternate set of instructions to install TWRP custom recovery... That's why we need to know what variant you have and what firmware you are on.
I think you need to read the Root Sticky Guide. Start with Post #1:

As you found I have H930G turned to H930. I flashed a fresh new Pie KDZ with REFURBISH option. So had to refollow WTF steps. But like in almost every time, new ADB environment occured some problems. This problem occured in 2 modern laptops. Then I tried on an old laptop and problem is just a bit decreased like sometimes it's not freezing but having write error. Then I figured out that if I plug in and out quickly then plug in persistent, it will work. I don't have any idea why i can solve it by that way but I wanted to share my exact experience.

Such a weird problem. Have you tried to use newer (or older) adb/fastboot binary? I had similar issue with my older xiaomy phone, I thought it was usb port or cable issue, then I tried to replace adb/fastboot binary with those from MiFlash app folder. Now it works as usualy does.
Are you by any chance using Ryzen CPU and using 1903 version of Windows 10?

LG V30

Hi -- we have a LG V30 (US998) that we were told was rooted. On boot up we get the message Your device software cannot be checked for corruption. Lock the bootloader. see g.co/ABH. I read on XDA that means that the phone has only had the bootloader unlocked but it hasn't been rooted. When i used root checker basic it says Sorry! Root access is not properly installed on this device. -- so there is no root access to the phone.
Two questions: Can we get back to the OEM install if we lock the bootloader or by other means? The previous owner says we can't go back but it is obvious that we have an incomplete or unsuccessful attempt at rooting. If we can't go back what is the simplest and most direct root to continue with the rooting? I can follow clear and precise directions -- I did root an old Note 1 but did not follow up as the phone is so old.
thanks in advance

Yes. You have Bootloader Unlocked V30. They've done most of the hard work for you. By the way, that Bootloader Unlock warning is the badge of freedom. LG tries to make it sound scary. Just ignore it.
Even though you're not rooted, I'm curious if you already have TWRP custom recovery installed? That would really cut down your to-do list!
IF you don't have TWRP custom recovery installed, then you just need to follow Section 6 of the WTF instructions. You're Bootloader is already unlocked. You just need to install TWRP, + three root files, including Magisk and reformat your internal memory.
Exactly what firmware version are you on in About Phone? If you're on something like 20a or 20b, after the paragraph above you would want to update to newer firmware. Or you may already be on newer firmware?
See post #192 of this thread:

Or click the huge hyperlink in post #1...
You want to follow the directions in Section 6, but you'll have to read some of the prior sections to download the files you need (ADB, etc.)

Question What’s the proper root method for the oneplus n2 g5? I’m a noob

I don’t know the step By step process if someone could explain it to me the way they would explain it to someone who will be attempting to root for the first time I’d appreciate it

Look for the magisck thread. Read it and it's simple. I'm not bright and got it first go.

Thanks for the direction. I’m not sure if oem unlock and unlocked bootloader are the same thing, in developer option on my oneplus n200 g5 metro by T-Mobile the option to unlock oem is grayed out and I can’t unlock it from that setting is there another way
This thread has the information on unlocking your bootloader (yes, the OEM Unlock is the same as a bootloader unlock, but the option in the developers option is just one part of unlocking the bootloader, it doesn't unlock it by itself):
The Quest for a Bootloader Unlock (partial guide, T-Mobile variant, may work for MetroPCS/Metro variant)
OK, this process has been hell, but I'm gonna try and consolidate everything I've worked out so far in one place. This all applies only to the T-Mobile variant (ie. it comes preloaded with all the T-Mobile bloatware) of the N200 on the T-Mobile...

If you can run ADB commands, there's one singular command you can run to un-grey out the Enable OEM Unlock option, it's explained in that thread.
