As a previous Pixel 2 (not XL) owner i immediately noticed that the speakers sound much worse on the pixel 3. It just sounds more flat and dull and there is some sort of distortion at a high volume. Is this normal? I know the speakers are a bit smaller on the Pixel 3 but something seems wrong here. Pixel 2 sounded so much richer and clearer.
For me, speakers on Pixel 3 is much more louder, richer and punchy. Although i agree that it does distorts a little at full volume but overall improvement than pixel 2

I'm in the same boat as you. They suck.
Over on Reddit there are threads about this and apparently it is because of the new waterproofing and, also, they need to break in. You can use software to tweak the sound to your liking, apparently.

Those coming from a pixel 2 or 2 XL, and use the phone as an alarm in the morning, does it sound like the volume has gotten lower? When I try all the diff alerts out, it sounds normal but when it actually goes off sounds a lot lower than my pixel 2 xl.
I'm coming from the 6P and I definitely noticed how muddy it sounds. I guess it could be the waterproof membrane. Still a bit disappointing. I'm going to give Viper a go and see how it sounds.

Pixel 3 series are a lot better than the Pixel 2. I had all 4 and I can say that the smaller Pixel 3 has the best, 3XL second especially now that Google fixed the imbalanced stereo speakers and distortion on the 3XL. They are almost neck-and-neck
After using a while p3 i hate the equalizer/sound settings on p3 on stock (fx deactivated!)
Its no "natural" sound.
Is there a option to disable it?

My Pixel 2 speakers sound different one from the other.
The top one seems to have more bass,the bottom more powerful though. How are things with the regular pixel 3?

It's like a fix a thing, break a thing.
Pixel 3= Louder speakers overall. I can hear audio much better vs. Pixel 2.
I'm not sure if others have this, but my earpiece buzzes a lot. It's to the point where I can sometimes barely hear the person. From what I have read, it is an issue with the software kernel and how it picks up the phone signal which is somewhat ridiculous but makes sense.
When I make wifi calls the buzzing is lessened by 80%, but normal tower calls are pretty rough. Unlike a lot of people, I make a lot of phone calls.
I'd give the Pixel 3 a B-/C+. I'll be getting rid of it later on this year for the Pixel 4 or something else that's for sure.
If you have the Pixel 2, I would absolutely NOT upgrade to the Pixel 3 and if I could do it all over again, I'd have just kept my Pixel 2.

Mins is like this as well. Luckily I own a few pair of Beats headphones and have Bluetooth in my car. It is pretty ridiculous though

I have the t-mobile variant and the speaker is very loud, to the point I have to turn it down when I let my daughter use it while she cleans her room because the sounds travels though the house. Maybe it's a bad unit.
The speakers are loud for me too， but the sound quality is pathetic

They are acceptable, but don't expect to be able to hear them in a room that's not completely quiet. Coming from an HTC m8 the speakers on the v10 were disappointing

I don't know about the H8, but I came from a Note 4 and was surprised at how crappy the V10 speaker is. Distortion City at loud volume.

I loved my m8 for the 1.5 years I had it. Awesome speakers, durable build(I had no case and only a vinyl wrap on it since week one), really easy to use one handed unlike the v10.
The v10 has a way better camera, super fast phone(4 gigs of ram?), brilliant screen, 268gb of storage with my 200gb micro SD. The extra battery is a major win, swapping battery's for the past two weeks and going from 0% to 100% in 20 seconds has been amazing.
But honestly my v10 has already started to fall apart, it's only a month old and looks beat to **** already. Already has more micro scratches than my old m8, the camera ring is scratched, the back cover is tinted with dirty/is a different color than rest of the phone, has several chunks missing from the rubber.?

Agreed, my wife's note 4 is much louder/clearer.
I know is not a big deal to most, but hopping in my old car (without Bluetooth) and still being able to enjoy listening to a podcast is a big deal for me. I just wish I knew if there is a software fix possible. Seems like some are fine with the volume.
There must be different suppliers for the speaker unit because I can tell no difference between my V10 and any other phone i've had with one speaker, including the G4, any of the Galaxy Notes, S4, Nexus 4 etc.. and i'm not hard of hearing or undiscerning. We're talking about a speaker 1/4th the size of a fingernail. Has anyone had a single-speaker phone that seriously didn't distort at full volume? My Note 4 sounded like crap, just like the V10, only the V10 doesn't get muffled when laying face up on a soft surface. I change phones every few months, can't remember a single one that sounded significantly different than the one before it with the exception of the Nexus 6 and its two front firing speakers, but even those distorted like mad at higher volume.
I've never heard HTC's "Boom Sound" so maybe i'm really missing out there. If every one of HTC's M series cameras didn't stink so bad (relative to the flagship competition) I would have had one by now though.
I find the sound comparable to my last phone galaxy s5. The speaker works well enough for my use not fantastic. I use Bluetooth most of the time anyway. I figure different phones have different drawbacks. All the plus's about this phone outweigh the negative.
I have a T-Mobile V10 that is rooted. I have Viper Audio(V4A) installed. It has made a VERY dramatic difference in the audio output and quality of the speaker. I rarely have to put the volume even halfway up! Audio is clear and loud. This lends me to believe that it is not a hardware limitation of the V10's speaker but software. The speaker can produce some loud and clear audio. I root all my phones to use V4A. It allows me to get great audio from the built in speakers.

Maybe there are different speakers causing all these different experiences. My wife's note 4 is much louder, and my daughters Droid turbo is much much louder. I seriously can't watch an interview - type YouTube video because I can't understand what anyone is saying.
I just factory reset my 2 day old v10. The speaker is a deal-breaker. It's going on Craigslist/eBay. A phone with end bezels this large should have great sound.

I called lg and spoke to them about the speaker. They said I was the first complaint they had regarding low sound. Their tech said the speaker was as loud as it ever would be and software would not change it, nor did they plan on making any changes or updates to the volume.
I'm sure it was a canned response but certainly not encouraging.

I would try it too, but Verizon versions of the V10 aren't rootable.... At least not yet.....?

I've had mine for a few days.. Ordered from Saudi Arabia with the really nice per orders...512gb.. The stereo speakers are a very noticeable improvement.. I've played them side by side with my Note 8 and Note FE... The big improvement is when you turn on Dolby Atoms.... It's not mine blowing (it is a mobile device) but it definitely kicks the speakers up a level... Very pleased... Haven't had a chance to use the headphone jack yet
I have used a store demo Note 9 for an hour or so. Side by side with my Note 8, the Note 9 speakers were a lot better. Definitely louder, but most important much better quality sound and much fuller sound with the dual speaker setup. The Dolby atmos definitely improved the sound quality also. The dual speakers are a big reason I decided to upgrade to the Note 9, and I am happy to say that with my hour of using a Note 9 store demo that the speakers are a huge improvement over the Note 8.
Received my note 9 unlocked from Samsung yesterday, it's ok. I'm really disappointed that it is not as loud as the s9 speakers. It's on par for loudness with the iPhone x though but I wouldn't say louder. The s9 is a few decibels louder then both.
Coming from the Note 8, I think the speakers on the Note 9 are pretty nice. I can immediately hear the stereo sound and it is definitely louder than the Note 8 as well.
Sound overall is definitely better. Richer sound with stereo separation. Loudness is on par with the note 8.

I noticed that Note 9 is quieter than my S9+.
Probably well known, but go into sounds and vibration and turn on Dolby Atmos. Made a huge difference for me. It was off by default on my phone.
Note 9 speakers play not so loud like s9plus. Galaxy s 9 plus it is louder. how come? I have check all settings, all settings was the some playing the some video and s9plus is louder. Note 9 need modification

If you want to improve the loudness and sound of your Note 9, go into settings and use the "adapt sound" tool. You have to use headphones for the tool, but once you tailor the sound with the adapt sound, it immediately improves the sound quality. Also, using Dolby Atmos helps also as others have mentioned.
Now at 4 days with my Note 9 and the difference/improvement of the external speakers from the Note 8 is quite significant. I can't compare with the S9, but IMO the Note 9 has great sound and dual speakers really make a ton of difference. Don't forget to use adapt sound and turn on Dolby Atmos.

Which Dolby profile do you guys think is the best for external speakers ? Auto, movie, music or voice?
I was leaning towards a Note 9 and then my wife got an S9+ and hearing the sound sold me. I agree with everyone else, why isn't the Note 9 as loud? I find it mildly irritating. Also has anyone else notice some weird sound handling with Google Maps? It's almost like it doesn't know what to do with stereo speakers.

If you mean the volume fluctuates, it happens to me sometimes with games. It sounds like the bottom speaker lowers in volume and the overall sound becomes compressed and muffled as if the stereo is too wide. If I restart the game or wait for a while it seems to fix itself. It seems to be app-specific as if I play music with the app still running in the background it seems to be fine.
I find the speakers pretty good with the music app and some YouTube videos, but Dolby Atmos seems somewhat inconsistent. For some games like Real Racing 3 and Horizon Chase they don't sound that good - they emphasize heavily on the car motor sound instead of the music. Asphalt 9 sounds a bit better as the music is more balanced although the choice of music is more harsh on the speakers. On Horizon chase that volume-dip glitch happens in about 5 minutes - only happened to me once with RR3 and not yet with Asphalt 9.
I'm coming from the S9 and yep I noticed the sound difference with the note. The s9 has great speakers. But also the note 9 makes up for it once Dolby it turned on. On the s9, didn't really notice difference unless I connected to my BT beats x. Come to think of it, I need to check out pub g and fortnite with dolby on.
Hello. This is for those who are still on N6P but are ready to move on, and contemplating either OnePlus 6T or Pixel 3 XL, for obvious reasons, both phones are similar size, with impressive dev activity w/ freedom to root/unlock and develop without hassle from OEM.
- I had great fun porting roms to 6P and customizing popular kernels just to make them unique, LeanKernel w/ EX features for example.
I bought the 6T midnight w/ 8gb of ram and 128 GB direct from OnePlus. A co-worker got a Pixel 3 XL from Verizon. I've played with both.
My sentiment with Pixel 3 XL
- After playing with the Pixel 3 XL, I've come to the conclusion and agreement with some others. Pixel 3 XL was not meant for us. Pixel 3 XL was not made for Nexus 6P fans. It was not made for Nexus fans. Pixel 3 XL feels more like Apple iPhone than ANY Android phone I've ever used or touched. Pixel 3 XL for me is an odd experience, because as I used it, I became aware and realized what Google tried to do with the Pixel 3 XL and why they partnered with Verizon. Verizon partnership clearly gives Pixel 3 XL the greatest opportunity and chance to convert Apple fans to Google Pixel 3 XL. I think many of your Nexus 6P owners after playing with Pixel 3 XL would come to the same conclusion. Pixel 3 XL oddly felt very simple, and LIMITED, just like an iPhone. While Pixel 3 XL fans will be able to customize to their heart's content with custom roms, mods and addons, but this stock experience left a bad taste in my mouth realizing who this phone was meant for. It was meant for the simple iPhone user who wastes their life on instagram posting selfies.
Value
- That's what the 6P was about. We all knew we would get cutting edge hardware with some sacrifices on the 6P, SD810, decent battery size, impressive EIS on the camera, latest updates, the first phone that exemplified how great fingerprint reader can be. Sacrifices to the camera and headphone output for example. But it was worth it to have an affordable, reasonably priced phone with the freedom to do with as we liked. We owned this phone, in it's entirety.
- 6T embodies that same philosophy as 6P. Cutting edge hardware with SD 845 and 8GB of ram, and blazing fast face unlock and decent on-screen fingerprint.
- The camera. 6T camera, not a debate, huge improvement over 6P. No question. Coming from 6P to 6T, you're gonna LOVE the camera. Yes it's not as good as Samsung Note 9, Huawei Mate 20, Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, Pixel 3 XL cameras, but compared to 6P, 6T camera is excellent improvement. On top of that, Pixel 3 Camera software works on 6P, takes great night pictures.
- Consider the value of the 6P and the freedom OnePlus allows, I believe the average current 6P owners will be like me, it's worth sacrificing the camera for those other gains. Als
- Pixel 3 XL has gone a different road. It's expensive. It's gimped on hardware that matters, battery, ram, no face recognition, and just an awful design, the worst designed flagship phone of 2018.
- Pixel 3 XL is NOT worth $900. It's not. You can get a Galaxy S9 Plus for less and it's a superior phone, in nearly every way. Pixel 3 XL does not deserve to be in the $900-1000 budget with Samsung, Huawei and Apple, it's just doesn't deserve to be there. Pixel 3 XL is the opposite of what Nexus was about. It's on the opposite spectrum of value.
Feel, 6T wins.
- Both 6T and Pixel 3 XL improved on feel over the 6P. They both hold in your well more comfortably than 6P. But the frosted glass on the 6T I prefer it. And it's narrower than Pixel 3 XL, it's more comfortable in my hands. Will admit the Pixel 3 XL rear is more grippy, but it's still slippery.
Hardware. 6T easily wins.
- 8GB of ram vs 4GB. Using the Pixel 3 XL, can clearly tell 4GB is not enough, even with the software updates. Baffled how Google can charge $900 for a phone w/ 4gb, baffling.
- The design. Wow, that notch, is horrifying, and so is the massive chin. Google definitely could have provided stereo speakers with almost no bezel design. Pixel 3 XL is 2018 design fail of the year. Comparing Pixel 3 XL's notch to iPhone, and other competitors, it's horrifying how bad it is. The 6T has a drop notch, and it's unwanted as well. But the 6T gets rid of the notch thanks to the OLED display, but still uses that empty space for status bar. The Pixel 3 XL does not. It's just really bad, Google clearly didn't care at launch or still.
- Pixel 3 XL microphone. Wow... The microphone on Pixel 3 XL is garbage. I don't know if it's the hardware or digital processing, either way, it is garbage. Especially recording, it's garbage.
- 6T stereo microphone recording, great. The opposite of Pixel 3 XL's garbage.
- IP68 rating. Well done some research. The OnePlus 6T undergoes gruesome QA/QI testing, including a 100 hour rain test, temperature ranging from -40 to 90 C. Watching tear down videos provide clear evidence OnePlus design includes ALL necessary details and components to achieve IP68 rating. This should be a non-issue. Also consider, none of the OEM guarantee water resistance or honor warranty for liquid damage. Samsung, HTC, Apple, Google all use liquid damage sensors in their phones. Anyone who risks liquid damage and trusts the IP68 rating is an idiot.
- The caseback. Yeah, that's a no contest. The frosted black on 6T looks better than Pixel 3 XL IMO, and it doesn't scratch like the Pixel 3 XL. And that oddity around the camera on Pixel 3 XL looks terrible, it really does.
- Pixel 3 XL does have wireless charging. But... The 6T Dash Charge charges faster than Pixel 3 XL, and... the 3700 mah battery is AWESOME. I've never run out of juice, including hours of gaming, youtube, browsing, reading etc. I never worry about the display brightness etc. For reasons I can't think of, if wireless charging is more important than Dash fast charge and 3700 mah battery, well we clearly have different needs. Battery life vs wireless charging? Really? Is that even worth discussing or debating?
- Pixel 3 XL has quad display. Yes, but it also has a blue haze, it's VERY evident. The color profiles also suck, with idiotic names like warm, what is warm and natural? Is this phone for iPhone simpletons or tech nerds? 6T display does not shift color or blue haze, and it has understandable color profiles like sRGB, DCI-3P, makes sense, call it what it is. The Pixel 3 display honestly is better than Pixel 3 XL, pay more for worse screen, what a joke.
- DisplayMate awarding top award to Pixel 3 XL is a farce. What a joke. The blue haze shift still exists on the Pixel 3 XL LG display, how that can win any award is a joke.
- Pixel 3 XL has better stereo speakers. Stock 6T has mono single speaker. I'm rocking the 6T stereo speaker mod w/ EX's kernel that allows me to adjust volume of either speaker to have level even sound from both, with true stereo sound. Still not as good as Pixel 3 XL, but is it better than 6P? I think it is, I think it has fuller sound than 6P with this mod.
- Neither phones have headphone jack. But... But... With the USB-C dongle, BOTH phones on my headphones sound much better than 6P's headphone jack output. So... consider that, both 6T and Pixel 3 XL sound is better than 6Ps.
- Pixel 3 XL without doubt has the better camera. It does. I'm not a camera fanatic. But the porting of Gcam to 6T is going well. I'm using a port that works with all features, except it shoots 4mp for front camera, and oddly is still better than stock camera's front camera, weird. I had a lot of fun taking some impressive night pics with Pixel Cam on 6T enjoying the holiday festivities.
- Pixel 3 XL front camera CRUSHES the 6T. How often do I do a selfie? NEVER. Zero f***s from me.
- 6T has hardware options to toggle alarm settings, ring, vibrate, and silent. It is as amazing as everyone says, I use it daily. Pixel 3 XL does not, nope.
Software, 6T easily wins
OxygenOS... Yes, after using OxygenOS and then using Pixel 3 XL, well Pixel 3 XL felt the way I feel when I use Apple, angry. Why are you limiting me? Why can't I do this? Why can't I do that? Pixel 3 XL experience made me angry to use, after using OxygenOS and custom roms on 6P.
- OxygenOS has 3 navigation options. ALL three I prefer to Pixel 3 XL's. Amazing right? The one navigation option on Pixel 3 XL is inferior to any of the three provided on OxygenOS.
- I always change the batter to circle w/ %, yup, OxygenOS has that covered.
- Double tape to wake with face recognition? Hell yeah, faster and more convenient to use than fingerprint on 6P.
- No LED notifications on 6T and since I don't like ambient display, oh well.
- Gaming mode, reading mode, sort of gimicky, but I do use them, a lot. They are useful. Pixel 3 XL does not.
- Unsurprising, any app features on Pixel 3 XL I use on 6T. Had no issues replacing stock apps with Google apps. There are ZERO software features from Pixel 3 XL that I desire not on 6T. None, there are absolute no reason for me to desire a Pixel 3 XL over 6T in any way.
- Do I believe OxygenOS will be preferred by any 6P user who used custom roms? Most definitely. I would even go as far as, I believe majority of 6P owners using custom roms will be satisfied with OxygenOS and not use a custom rom.
- The 6T is a smoother experience and enjoyable experience than Pixel 3 XL. I really don't think that's up for debate. 8gb ram is overkill, but you can feel the difference compared to Pixel 3 XL 4gb.
Longevity
- I'm not interested in getting a new phone every year. 6T wins for this reason alone. The 8gb of ram with the 3700 mah batter future proofs this phone more than Pixel 3 XL. And you don't have to suffer the the worst designed phone of 2018 with the 6T. A year from now, I have little doubt, that massive notch and chin will be even more annoying and aggravating as 2019 and 2020 introduces completely bezel free phones that still have stereo speakers with superior cameras and sensors. Overall I 6T is the better option for long term use. Any software advancement on Pixel 3 XL will be available on the 6T and will perform better on the 6T.
I honestly believe Google failed miserably with the Pixel 3 XL. There are so many better phones than Pixel 3 XL this year. Oppo Find X, Samsung Note 9/Galaxy S9 Plus, Huawei Mate 20, Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, and OnePlus 6T to me are all preferable to what Google offered Apple fans with Pixel 3 XL.
If camera is the reason to pay an extra $300? I think you're insane. Much better off paying for a $300 camera and a OnePlus 6T.
Totally agree with what you have said.
Pixel is a big NO NO for Nexus 6P user.
I also will get Oneplus as my next phone.

Oh, guess I was wrong about that. Might be getting me one at some point.
I think it is important to note that the Screen Resolution on the 6T is lower compared to the 6P. I played with the 6T in a T-mobile store, and I could not help but dwell the entire time on how I could not avoid noticing the pixelation (my glasses give me perfect eyesight up close). That reason alone is why I am waiting for next year's devices, it's really disappointing to me that the 6T is basically a perfect upgrade for every other reason other than the screen, the one dealbreaker for me.

Humans can't see pixels at 300 PPI at safe distances to use. 6T is 402 PPI, it's well beyond retina or beyond capability of human eyesight. To see pixels, would have to use at distance that is damaging to your eyes. I have 20/20 without glasses and definitely cannot see pixels. If you can see pixels in normal use, I can only conclude you're a cyborg with beyond human eyesight.
Only time I see pixels is using VR and currently Google Daydream well... sucks. It's fun and promising, but it has a LONG ways to go.
For me, I'm dissappointed with OnePlus is the headphone jack and the early adoption of fingerprint. Since I believe OnePlus says headphone jack would not have prevented use of 3700 mah battery, it was the fingerprint reader. Oh well, every company makes blunders and mistakes, luckily these mistakes are easy to live with.
I also consider to move to the 6T. But the downside would be the size of 6.3". I'm a small person with smaller hands. It would be awesome to have an actual OnePlus with smaller screen.

If you are a 6P user, bear in mind that the 6T is actually easier to handle. Check the phones dimensions. 6T is pretty much all screen, the comparably huge bezels on 6P, plus its wider aspect ratio, make it bigger than 6T. With a smaller screen (6P's screen has about 88% surface of 6T).
As for the OP, I ended up updating from a 6P to a 6T and I have to say I'm satisfied. The front fingerprint reader does take a while to get used to, you need to learn how to better input the five fingerprints you have available but after a bit of trial and error I'm now in a place where I rarely need to try more than once to unlock the phone. And if you're less paranoid than me, face unlock apparently is blazing fast. Absence of headphone jack is annoying, there's no denying it. I bought an adapter from Fiio (BTR1K) that works well, both as a bluetooth adapter and a USB DAC (with USB C to USB C cable). It's small enough to fit in the pouch where I carry my IEMs sooo... it's an ok solution. Wished it was unnecessary but apparently you can't have it all (and Fiio's DAC and amp is probably better than most internal solutions, to be honest).

The entire size is still my main concern.

Any 6P user concerned about fingerprint, there have been solutions to its slow speed and unreliability..
For fingerprint, have solved my issues this way. Now fast and one try.
There is a magisk mod to disable the FP animation. Huge difference in speed and reliability.
Add FP for each finger more than once.
With those two, I know longer have issues with FP.

I think they're quite amazing. I'm coming from a Pixel 2 XL and these are significantly louder and more clear. There is also WAY less distortion and rattle at full volume. Bass is punchy for its size, and the rest of the frequency range sounds pretty balanced. Also note that I'm coming from the Pixel 2 XL, to the smaller pixel 4 and it's performing way better. Even though both speakers aren't front facing anymore it still sounds better.
Here to confirm it is stereo earpiece and bottom firing speakers together. Reviews did not mention if the earpiece acted as a speaker, and I was worried it would be stereo bottom firing only, a-la pixel 1. Fortunately that is not the case!

In my case what noticed is that I can hear voices much more clearly vs Pixel 2
So maybe they tuned them to sound better on the High frequency.
Let's face it... nobody should use a phone as a speaker regularly.
Now to watch series or YouTube video is really important the audio. And I'm enjoying much more the YouTube videos now because I can hear them without raising a lot the volume

Coming from a 7 Pro the earpiece speaker is considerably louder. I think the "Dolby" tuning by Oneplus might give a little better spatial separation but I am very pleased with the audio quality of my P4.
Came from an LG G7, which was touted for its speaker's loudness and fidelity. I can say, without a doubt, that this sounds much better. It sounds warmer, fuller, and can get louder without distorting or sounding overly sharp. Pleasantly surprised, to be quite honest.
First time I've heard the Pixel 4 speakers was impressed how good they sound: full, bassy, quality.

I agree fully with this. I too came from a Pixel 2 XL and while I was initially bracing for a downgrade in speaker performance, due to lack of dual front firing speakers and speaker size, I was completely blown away by the audio performance of the Pixel 4. It is an improvement in every way possible from my 2 XL. Where it shines the most for me is clarity at high volumes. My 2 XL would break up pretty badly at above 70% volume and sound pretty trashy but my Pixel 4 can keep it's sound integrity pretty held together even up at volumes in excess of 90%. All in all, I love this phone.
Not sure mine is defective. Music sounds really bad through speakers. If the speakers are playing sound and I type or go-to other screens, there are random popping sounds as well. Anyone else experiencing this. Getting ready to return it.
Coming from a Pixel 3, I'm really disappointed by the speakers sound. Considering upgrading to a Pixel 6 Pro but not sure it is worth it?

My friend just returned his pixel 6 pro. Couldn't hear people on phone calls and terrible cellular reception.
