Definitive APN editing guide - Useful for CDMA MVNO users - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I spent hours trying to get my APN editing when I did a factory reset on my Nexus 6p. Android 8.1 made editing APNs a royal pain if you are using a CDMA carrier. There are lots of threads spread around on getting Total Wireless, Tracfone, and other carriers working form MMS and internet. A lot of the solutions I found worked most of the way but I needed tethering and finally rooted to be able to edit and get tethering.
The options I have found are
Root your phone and do some SU commands
Pop an alternate carrier sim in and edit the apn (I have not been able to fully test as I don't have an alternate sim)
Use adb to open the apn add dialog while the sim is ejected (result does not allow tethering but local data works)
1) Have a rooted phone. Place phone in airplane mode. Enter the commands shown in <brackets> (don't include the <> symbols). Open a command prompt and enter <adb shell>. Get a su prompt by entering <su>. Modify the verizon apn to point to the correct apn server <content update --uri content://telephony/carriers --bind apn:s:"TRACFONE.VZWENTP" mmsc:s"http://mms.vtext.com/servelets/mms" --where "name='Verizon'"> Your data and mms should start working and tether should work as well.
2) Use a T-mobile, AT&T or similar sim and enter the total wireless (or MVNO settings of your choice) APN settings. Remove alternate sim and insert MVNO sim. Go to APN settings and select the new APN.
3) Have your screen unlocked on your phone. At a shell prompt enter <adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.INSERT content://telephony/carriers --ei simId -1> Enter the MVNO APN settings found on google and save. It may give an error if you enter DUN profile. I was not able to get tether to work this way so I used method 1.
Feel free to add other methods that work. Make note of the software version you are utilizing.

Well I have to eat crow. I thought this was working great but I can either have tether or mms but not both. Method 3 allows MMS to work but not tether. Method 1 allows tether and data to work but not MMS!!!!!

Enable LTE on Videotron G2

This is how I got LTE to work permanently on a Videotron G2 after much Googling. It may not be the best solution, but it does the job for me !
I am not responsible if anything happens to your phone. There are tools to unbrick it though
First, you need to have an LTE SIM card (good luck with that one) and a rooted phone
Second, you've got to rename "LteConfigs.apk" in system/apps (Could be "LteConfigs.apk.bck")
Third, create this new APN and select it :
Name: Videotron LTE
APN : media.ng
MMSC: http://media.videotron.com
MCC : 302
MNC : 500
APN Type: default,mms,supl
Leave all other fields empty.
Lastly, reboot the phone then go to Parameters, Network and connection sharing, Mobile networks, Network mode and select "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto".
Warning: Once rooted, it's best to unroot before getting any OTA updates, but first rename "LteConfigs.apk", else the OTA will fail.
It has been easier for me
This is what I did:
First, make sutre your device is upgraded with KitKat. Then, ask for a LTE SIM card on a Videotron Store (employes are willing to give it, even if the LG G2 is not yet compatible).
Once the LTE sim card is inserted and "configured" by Videotron, go on the telephone keypad and type * #* #4636 #*#*
Right after tou type that, you arrive on the hidden menu of the phone. Once you are there, go into the phone information and switch the favorite network you want to use for LTE only. The network should switch to LTE mode. When it is done, change again the favorite network for LTE/WCDMA/GSM. If you don't do that, you will not be able to place a phone call. If it does not work, you can try to search the available network in SYSTEM SETTINGS, NETWORK, THETHERING & NETWORK, MOBILE NETWORK, NETWORK OPERATOR, SEARCH NETWORK. Hopefully a videotron LTE network will be availlable (chose Videotron PRT).
Good luck! The experience is clearly enhanced on the LTE network.

[Q] Editing APNs, Verizon > Metro PCS *** SOLVED ***

*** SOLVED, see third post ***
Hello, I'm trying to use my VWZ Note 2 on MetroPCS.
I'm rooted, stock 4.4.2.
When I use the buildprop edit suggested here, my "add access point names" menu disappears entirely:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...41691-mod-add-apn-editor-system-settings.html
If I remove the buildprop code, I get the menu back, but I can't edit anything.
I pushed my own version of "apns-conf.xml" to /sdcard/ and then pasted it into /system/etc/ and replaced the old one, changed permissions to read-only. Also tried read/write all permissions open.
I can now click the "+" button in the APNs screen. I can add/save APNS, but when (and only when) I have ALL of the correct APN info put in, it instantly deletes the APN I've added. Up to that point I can save the APN, see it in the APN list, and edit it further.
I restart phone, the APNs are all gone except the grayed-out "LTE - Verizon Internet".
I got an app to read the APN settings from the SIM card itself (the one I'm already using on my metroPCS phone). Interestingly, these are the networks on the SIM card:
T-Mobile US
Simple
StraightTalk T-Mobile
solavei
T-Mobile LTE
Added both of the T-Mobile APNs, which did save to my access point names, but no network still.
Then I realized that I am a monumental idiot. I put the SIM back in my old metroPCS phone and got the APN settings from there. For future use, here they are:
Name: MetroPCS
APN: fast.metropcs.com
MMSC: http://metropcs.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
APN protocol: IPv6
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Let's try putting those in my note 2. Why the heck I didn't try this sooner is beyond me.
Still nothing, "No signal." Also, "SIM from unknown source."
EDIT: As I suspected, the APN settings weren't being saved to apns-conf.xml in system/etc/
So I pulled, edited, pushed my new version of apns-conf.xml to have the correct metro pcs settings, put it back in system/etc/, set the correct permissions (read-only for the system).
Now I have the MetroPCS access point name, it matches apns-conf.xml, but still no connection.
I think I'm about out of options.
SOLVED.
If mod wants to truncate this into one post total, that's cool.
My process to get MetroPCS working on a VZW (Verizon) Note 2.
1: Root it
Get ghettoroot 2.2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2924899&d=1409874318
Download android SDK
Set environmental variable for adb commands. Note that you add the command after whatever is already in "path" variable, with a semicolon between: http://jaxov.com/2010/10/set-up-adb-on-windows-7-vista-xp-for-android-phones/
Uninstall any samsung stuff, especially KIES. Then install samsung drivers: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SCH-I605TSAVZW
Ghettoroot your phone. You'll need to enable usb debugging, under developer options. How to enable developer options: System settings > about phone > Build number. Press "Build number" like 7 times or so and it will unlock dev options.
Now we need to do some APN settings. Follow this for the method, rest of this post for the info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2044449
APN info (if value not shown, leave blank/default):
Name: MetroPCS
APN: fast.metropcs.com
MMSC: http://metropcs.mmsvno.com/mms/wapenc
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri,*
APN protocol: IPv6
You'll want to have those settings both in the apns-conf.xml, and in the More Settings>Mobile Networks>Access point names
Activate your phone with MetroPCS.
Remove "Unknown SIM card" notification: Long press the notification to figure out which app is creating it (app info), then use titanium backup to uninstall it.
I have read and read i am having issues now since the sim message is generated by tbe system ui i cant kill this is in the verizon note 2 when i install the sim it force closes everything any thoughts would be great.
Ugh. Try doing a factory reset and starting over.
Make sure you use TitaniumBackup to uninstall (preferably freeze if you own pro) the app that's causing the SIM message. You must be rooted of course. Not sure why things would force close, you might have got rid of wrong system app.

Hi guys
Does anybody knows an alternative way to unlock gsm on the VGN2 with 4.4.2?

[Q] No SIM card - After rooting LG G3 and changing to GSM, it is not detecting SIM

I got a Sprint LS990 ZV6 phone from ebay. I decided to use it in T-Mobile, so rooted it. After following so many steps, the phone is not accepting any SIM card when I switch to GSM.
I followed below steps.
- Downgraded phone to ZV4 from ZV6
- Rooted the phone using Stump root
- Changed the carrier options as per http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3/general/unlock-sim-gsm-how-to-t2853594
- Added APN settings for T-mobile changed network pref
- Inserted my SIM and rebooted the phone.... I shows No SIM card (the SIM is working properly in other phones & I tried couple of SIMs nothing works)
Can anyone please tell me after downgrading & rooting the phone, will it show Active SIM for GSM (i.e. signal bar not with red cross and No SIM icon).
If anyone faced this issue and resolved it, please help me also on this. I have been struggling from more than 2 months to fix it.
Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3/general/how-to-gsm-unlock-t2961099 I made it and listed people that confirmed it working if you need help pm me or them.
Finally after following below steps it worked
GSM Unlock for Sprint LG G3 (Works for US GSM Carriers & International Carriers)
1. Root the device using StumpRoot - Download here http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g...rizon-t2850906
2. Install SuperSU & Root Explorer & 920 Text Editor (or you can use Rom Tool Box for build.prop editing)
3. Copy build.prop from /system/build.prop to /sdcard
4. Open /sdcard/build.prop in 920 Text Editor
5. Edit line 268 and change ro.build.target_operator=SPR to ro.build.target_operator=spr
6. Save the file
7. Go to root explorer and copy build.prop from /sdcard to /system/ - try and delete existing build.prop and then copying the one from /sdcard instead of overwriting the existing file. I've encountered bootloops when overwriting build.prop
8. change permissions on /system/build.prop file you just copied to "rw - r - r". This is very important - when you copy and paste build.prop it loses the correct permissions and incorrect permissions will result in bootloop
9. reboot the device
10. It should now be unlocked. You will be unable to change the Network mode under "Mobile Networks" which will be grayed out so use the app "Network" from the play store to change the modem to "GSM (auto PRL)
11. In a few seconds you should see a signal. If not reboot the device once again and it should work.
12. Download "Tweakker" from the play store to get to APN settings and configure required APN settings for your carrier. After you are done with this step, you should have 3G/HSPA+ or Edge connectivity

Now the next search is using this phone in T-Mobile or at&t for LTE.
Does any one got any spell for this
As far as I know you cannot use LTE due to the face our device does not support it.

What ROM are you using? Some variant of stock?
I'm having calling issues in the various CM versions I've tried.
edit - the GSM version of the GPE ROM works fine though. Flashed it with Danvdh's VZ kernel.
Originally on stock of1 but just flashed stang5litre but the method worked on both.
So I have to root to get MMS on to get the VZW S4 to work on T-Mobile correct?

Yes sir!
I get a screen which says "Device Locked". the message goes on to explain this is likely because the phone has been locked down by manufacturer (carrier?) and even rooted devices can have problems due to SELinux restrictions.

If you see that message it's because the su binary is not high enough. Install the apk in the same folder that is linked in the OP, open supersu and update if needed then try again after rebooting.
Thanks. I got it to work. Looks like the SMSC number needs to be re-entered after each reboot and texting doesn't work in LTE mode, but looks easy enough to toggle back and forth when necessary.

Yeah I have the same problem of having to re-enter the SMSC number after every reboot too and I'm not sure of the culprit. Would love to know if there is a way to permanently change this so I don't have to fiddle with it every time

Check under your mobile network settings, make sure network mode isn't set to global. It should say gsm/umts. You may want to re apply settings after changing modes. I noticed the global setting screwed up my tmobile settings so hopefully it's related to your issues.(fingers crossed)

I followed your guide for my dad's verizon s4 but I am running into some problems.
I rooted it following the root guide linked earlier in this thread and root is successful. SuperSu is installed and root checker verified.
However, in my APN settings, under APN Type, i have to manually type in "Internet+MMS", and the under APN Protocol, the only choices are ipv4, ipv6, ipv4/ipv6.
Also, when I open the advanced signal status app, do i select the LTE/GSM (PRL), is that what you meant?
edit: even just selecting GSM auto (prl), i still cant get 3g, 4g, or LTE. Only edge.

Having to manually enter your apn type is normal. I have "internet, mms, supl" typed into mine. The problem you are having with the app being locked is because your version of the su binary isn't correct. Install the supersu app that is included in the OP. Before doing anything else you will need to open the newly installed supersu app and allow the binary to update. After it has updated immediately reboot and it should no longer be locked. Also back under the APN settings, don't mess with the ipv4/ipv6 settings. Just leave them at default.
When I get to APN protocol, it's not giving me the option "WAP 2.0".... Only IPv4, IPv6, and then IPv4/IPv6.
Also not giving me the option to save the newly created APN. What to do next?

At the bottom of the tutorial is a link to a google drive folder with two apk files. Download them and open them on your phone to start the install. After installing "supersu.apk" click open and accept the upgrade, click normal when asked what method to use then reboot when it prompts. The lock will be gone.

Great, thanks alot man that actually worked perfectly. Another question though... so in order to do what we just did, You have to have absolute root access to your phone right? i opened a terminal emulator app and notice that i still have the dollar sign on the command line. But when i run "su", it has the hash symbol which i'm assuming means i'm root now or at least have root privileges. Shouldn't i have had the hash symbol as soon as i started the emulator? does this mean my su binary is still not high enough?

Question - How to enable LTE icon in the status bar (if you're in the US)?

I have been trying to find a way of having LTE display as my network connection instead of 4g+/4g (I know that there's no technical difference, but aesthetically it does make a difference and it's easier to see when you're not on an LTE network).
The closest that I have found to making this happen is the following thread here on XDA: [Guide] Enable LTE Icon on Unrooted Mate 9
I already had a call with AT&T to verify that I am connecting to their LTE network with my device so I know that from a technical backend perspective - I'm good to go.
I was able to obtain the list of current MCC/MNC codes currently configured for my phone using the 'get system hw_show_lte' ADB command. However I'm a bit confused as to how I am supposed to add the MNC/MCC values for my carrier (I'm on AT&T). the MCC code is 310, but there are more than one MNC code (according to this site here: http://www.mcc-mnc.com/)
I don't want to mess anything up as I clearly don't know what I'm doing. Is there a magisk module that can make this change (I searched for LTE and only came up with the VoEnabler module)?
Is there a system file that can be modified via a text editor (so that I can make a backup before making any changes)?
Thanks for the help/guidance in advanced.
Thanks for the link.
I tried the command adb shell settings get system hw_show_lte and I got "null"
Then I used the command adb shell settings put system hw_show_lte "310" and it is showing me the LTE icon with T-Mobile.
Maybe after an OTA I will lose the icon, but at least it is really easy to change it again.
