Google Pay / Android Pay not available / not compatible with Mate 20 pro. - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello guys,
Bought Mate 20 Pro recently. Apart from my frustration with HiVision missing on my device and OEM unlock grayed out, I have found that I cannot use / register my VISA / Mastercard with the phone's NFC and use it for paying... Seems that the Google Pay app is not compatible - cannot find it in the store on this phone. Phone is bought from Europe, so EMEA variant. No OEM software available to serve this purpose (like SamsungPay)?
Am I missing something?
Regards,
Kamen

I have the L09 variant in the US and this hasn’t been my experience.

Have you tried downloading Safety Net Check app from Google Playstore and see if it is all successful? I'm also having issues with Google pay with the recent 9.0.0.168 firmware update and now I get an error when trying to add a card to Google Pay NFC.
I'm getting CTS profile mismatch failure in that safety net check.
Probably different from your issue but maybe can help pinpoint the issue further?

Yeah google pay not working.
This is the worst flagship phone i have ever tried - feels more like a counterfeit copy of a flagship honestly. Google pay cannot possibly work since i cannot install it (see pic). Any luck for anyone else? I think i will just put this phone in the rubbish bin where it belongs and never try chinese pieces of crap again...

Well it's the best flagship I've ever used. So much so it's the first time ever I'm keeping my phone longer than a year. You clearly have a faulty handset or bought an import that isn't compatible with some of your local apps.

Yeah i had the phone replaced this morning and the difference is HUGE (huge is not a strong enough word for it). The processor seems to have had a manufacturing fault that caused most of my problems. Though google pay on the replaced device keeps saying it is not compatible but huawei tech guys said it is probably a sim card issue (???), i will have that replaced.. the defective phone i had was crazy slow and jittery and many many issues with signal strength https connections, etc... If i find a sollution to the google pay app i will post an update here

UK, Model LYA-L09 (C432), Build 9.0.0.238, Showing as compatible and ready to install. Must be an issue with a certain variant?

The only way that you'll be able to do this is by buying the device outright (off contract) and then requesting a SIM unlock from AT&T. Otherwise, you're going to have to buy the device and wait a minimum of 3 months before you can get it unlocked.

That is precisely what I did and my plan was. After calling they said I need to have 6 months of active service before they will give it time me. I am looking for other options
Root?
Besides unlocking this device, is there any word about rooting floating around for AT&T's Asus Padfone X?

6 months now???!!! That's ridiculous. I get that they are trying to maintain exclusivity with the device (which is just plain stupid, imho), but 6 months of service???
I absolutely love mine, but not enough to have to deal with those terms. Sorry mate.

Towelroot works perfectly. However, don't expect too much. I rotted mine and went about changing the launcher and such and completely borked the device. I had to do a factory reset on it. Seems that Dynamic Display relies heavily on the ASUS Launcher.

I got a friend that has ATT to check it out. They were ok with him unlocking it because he does have service with them however they couldnt register the IMEI because they need proof of use on their network before they will give out the code. The dont want someone to just by a device and automatically take it to another network. Legere was right the other day.. They will rape you and they are greedy bastards.
If I paid full retail no discounts for a device I should be able to do whatever I want with it. You made your money off me already. Let me do what I please
Cool. Good to know theres at least a way.

3 month rule does not apply to ATT. You have to wait for the duration of the contract or pay off the phone if you are on the next program.

The phone does not have to be on your account for 60 days. You just have to be an att subscriber and the account in good standing for 60 days. They cannot provide a code to a non att subscriber. mainly because it doesn't work that way. You can get the full details about device unlock at Http://www.att.com/deviceunlock

Exceptions can be made for certain customers that must travel internationally...specifically for military, or goodwill/missionary work. If your convincing enough you can get it done
I had a lengthy conversation with AT&T as well as a BBB complaint filed against them for just this reason.
A subsidy lock is placed on all devices regardless if it is subsidized or not. They will provide an unlock code only if you meet their ransom demand of 3 full months of promptly paid service on the device in question on their network after paying full retail value for the handset. At that point you can request an unlock code and in 5 to 10 business days you will receive the unlock code by email. So basically you can finally migrate to T-Mobile or another carrier with the device after about 100 days of ownership of a device with an average expected usage of only 365 days.
when speaking to a representative from the office of the president of AT&T Mobility in regards to the BBB complaint I was told this and I quote verbatim what was told to me "If you don't like our terms for sale of an AT&T branded headset you can always choose to buy from another company with terms more favorable to you."
Is unlocking going to be very effective on other US networks?
I mean, if it can barely call/text and would have poor to no LTE/usable mobile data, is it really going to be worthwhile to unlock? That's been the problem with importing previous Padfone models, and I find it hard to believe that an AT&T-exclusive device would be much different...
Granted, I hope that's not the case, because my AT&T contract is almost up and I really need a device upgrade...

It should work perfectly on other US networks. Imported models don't have the necessary data frequencies for all US networks (especially Tmobile). I'm buying the padfone e (dual sim, quadband wcdma) and using it as my backup phone and primary tablet. I'll use my K910 as a hotspot if I really need mobile data but my tablets are primarily used on wifi.

But how do we actually know if it'll work well? Do we have access to the white sheets, or some other listing of it's supported frequencies?
It just seems like, if it's only on AT&T in the US, then it's probably built for AT&T and less compatible than we'd like.
any hope for non at customers?

As previously advised I am a Tmo customer I used a friends ATT account as a means to get around the unlocking. After about a 1 1/2 months of having ATT open cases and reviewing the account to have it unlocked, it did get unlocked.
This was not an easy feat at all. Literally took calling in almost every other day, speaking with "supervisors/managers" making many complaints to have it resolved.
The concept is annoying that I have to but the device full price and cant do what I want with my device. Glad the unlocking bill was passed even though there will still be a lot of red tape from carriers to get codes.
I am using Tmo LTE and havent had any data issues w/ us bands. Again it was a process, however I ddnt have to spend anymore than what I paid for the device and grateful for my friend for helping me with that.

Any roms for the Mediapad X1?

I'd like to get rid of the Huawei UI and get something clean like AOSP or CM.
Do we have any roms yet?
None so far. It seems Huawei hasn't released any sources yet.
As a workaround, just install any 3rd party launcher. Nova works fine.
Nova would probably be the first thing I put on there, I hear this phone doesn't come with the Google play store though?
What about root? Has that been done yet? Gotta uninstall all the junk

There isn't much junk on this phone, quite a clean ROM. The International models come with Play store. The China models have an installable Play store from the Huawei app store, so there is no problem.
To root, you need to first install HiSuite, then enable USB debugging, then run Root Genius.
I'm not sure which version I ordered. I got the FDD Dual LTE one from here..

Does HiSuite come with the phone or do I have to download it somewhere?

Excellent! Thank you!
I guess the first thing to do once I get the phone is to update it to the latest firmware via HiSuite and then root it.
I wonder if I need to unlock the phone as well? I will be putting in a sim card from the US, but I suspect phones outside the US aren't carrier locked.

OK, thanks. Any import tax on charged on it?
I'm in the UK and a bit concerned that I'm going to get hit with another £30 or £40 in import duty, as it'll be coming from the Far East. It might not be the same in the US though I suppose.
Does anyone know how it works regarding import tax/duty to the UK?

USA doesn't charge tax/customs for these devices. Some China based vendors will offer to ship the item without the original retail packaging to avoid additional taxes for certain destinations.

Yup, no taxes for me. It was either $13 for regular shipping and $19 for expedited shipping, Expedited took 3 days, pretty nice...
That's all I paid over the cost of the phone.

One of my first replies here on XDA, even tho I visit these forums every day.
About customs taxes: I live in The Netherlands, rougly 10% of all incoming parcels gets manually checked and opened by the dutch customs. I always let the seller mark the customs value as 17$ OR BELOW IT. The rule in The Netherlands is that all parcels, coming from outside EU, gets a 21% TAX and €17,50 standard import/clearance costs. Writing now with my X1, imported without any additional costs. Try to let the seller mark 15$ on your parcel and I think you can import it without having to pay taxes. Also this works perfect for me with DHL and small airmail parcels, big parcels (i.e. 20pcs Beats by Dre Studio) shipped with Airmail or HK Speedpost always gets picked out, never with DHL.
Wish you good luck, and let me knpw if you order it and how it's done after importing regardings taxes.

Great.
Phone is actually pretty good. Annoys me that the AOSP Android Development isn't going fast. Chinese forums already have CWM in Chinese language, but still nothing different than MIUI. I've installed the 4.4 Google Now launcher and removed the borders around the icons which MIUI implements by default. Really strange thing is that my Android is way faster now than it was when I got it in the beginning, didn't change anything.
Keyboard typing needs some practice at this big screen, using AOSP keyboard right now but I always type the letter 'M' instead of 'N' and the letter 'P' instead of 'o' lol. Trying to get used to it now for a couple of weeks, but still need to practice more haha.
Hopefully this phone gets dev's attention, so we can get a AOSP rom, but I think we'll need to wait on Huawei for releasing the kernel sources...

Received OP2 (Chinese Version) - UK, EE

Hello everyone,
I have received my OnePlus 2 today - it is the Chinese version of the handset with Oxygen OS 2.0 installed (with no bloatware). I thought I would post this in-case it is helpful to anyone, I can confirm the following:
4G/LTE work fine on EE
Dual SIM works fine - I can both make and receive from the two SIM cards - however I cannot see the phone number of the SIM in slot two (probably because the phone only has 1 IMEI I suspect - but this does not stop me making or receiving calls on the SIM in slot two)
I will continue testing things but so far so good, very happy.
EE is great for FDD-LTE phones from China. I've had loads work fine, including my old Chinese OnePlus One.
Interesting re. dual SIMs working - good news for importers. Out of interest, do you have two IMEIs on the inside back (my International variant does)?

I'm using three UK with a Chinese version OPT. LTE works however when signal falls down to 3G, the possibility is that it will not revert to 4G unless you reboot. very annoying. probably a baseband issue
I also have a chinese one from merimobile but mine came preloaded with a whole load of malware. An Oxygen rom of some kind with the usual chinese 3 "browser" icons and lots of "your phone is running slowly" notifications....
I flashed the Oxygen rom that is easy to find, gives Oxygen 2.0.0 and no malware that I can find, but it does have actionbar issues - both K9-mail and Up crash on startup with logcat lines similar to this :
AndroidRuntime( 1843): Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException: Attempt to invoke virtual method 'void android.app.ActionBar.setDisplayShowCustomEnabled(boolean)' on a null object reference

That's an issue for most of 1+2 I think. A fix in on the way, and you know how fast OnePlus is on giving updates (sarcastic)

Thanks
But in case of Aliexpress try to find the seller with strong reputation and some fast delievery (like DHL or EMS) or you can wait for ages (many of them do not have the phone on hand and can tell you long stories why you should wait). And before payment contact the seller and ask the question about avaliabilty and when he can sent the phone to you.

I guess they are just importing them in bulk from China? Still loving it?
It took a week to arrive via DPD - it came with a converter plug, screen protector and case for free too. I really do love the handset, it has worked out quite well for me having confirmed dual SIM functionality does work and I get LTE on EE.

Excellent! That's not too bad at all then. I'm on Three and need to check their LTE frequencies, to see whether I can get it. That could be a deal breaker for a chinese version for me. I love my LTE.

You should be fine with Three, if you get either the EU/Asia variant or the Chinese. The EU/Asia variant would be better as it can access both bands that Three use for 4G are 3 (1800Mhz) and 20 (800Mhz).

For the label and listing doesn't have to be always right! The call thing is just to be sure ... Works on almost every mobile phone with a few exceptions.

Buying a Note 8 Duos SM-N9500 256GB from wondamobile.com

Here in Sweden we officially only have the 64 GB SM-N950F and FD versions available, but since I want masses of storage AND dual SIM cards I decided to go for the Hong Kong version of the SM-N9500 via http://wondamobile.com. In case anyone else is considering doing the same, I thought I would contribute my experience in detail.
TL, DR: Wonda Mobile have been great, they have answered my e-mails promptly and paid the import customs for me very quickly, but I haven't yet tried the phone. (Opening it on Xmas Day.)
I ordered the phone on a Wednesday evening, it arrived the following Monday.
They informed me in an order confirmation e-mail that they would pay any customs charges added. When I received a payment link from DHL, I sent it to Wonda Mobile and they quickly paid it for me.
The phone came with a UK/HK plug, not Euro / F-type sadly. It would have been great if they switched the plug to match the customer’s country of residence. But I was prepared beforehand to keep using some of my current Note 4 chargers (which provide the same amps and volts) with new USB-C cables.
The seal on the box had been cut open. Everything seemed untouched though, so I didn't understand why it had been opened. When I asked Wonda Mobile about it they replied: “Most of our products will unseal for quality check before ship. And it is 100% brand new.”
I started up the phone quickly to check that it was factory reset and the setup guide was already in English. Does anyone know if English is the default in Hong Kong?
My intention is to update this thread when I have tried the phone out. Primarily I'm curious about how/if Samsung Pay will work here in Sweden.
I have the same phone ... Samsung Pay doesn't work here in the UK. I think it will only work in Hong Kong. Enjoy your phone ... it's a great piece of kit!
Sent from my SM-N9500 using Tapatalk
From what I know Sam pay will only work if the bank you use has made an agreement with your bank. In UK I don't think they have any agreement yet as I was unable to use it and when I looked into it they only have less then 10 banks in their scheme. It said on their website that they are working on getting more banks to join Sam pay. Hope they get the UK banks to sign up quick.
I doubt it will work in Sweden yet or anywhere else in Scandinavia.
Thanks for the replies.
Regarding Samsung Pay, I have yet to try it out IRL, but I have added my debit card and it seems to be setup properly. Here in Sweden, Samsung Pay actually seems to have come quite a long way. Several of the major banks support it, including mine (Swedbank), and supposedly nearly all card transaction machines have support for it too. The setup was straight forward and I haven't had to do anything special to get it to work. (But again, I haven't actually tried to use it to pay yet.)
Overall, I'm very pleased with the phone so far. But setting it up can be a little overwhelming. There are so many options and features, and it takes a lot of energy to make informed decisions on all the options.
The phone seems to have come with a full set of languages available. The Swedish language is fine, but has some rough edges here and there. For some reason, the phone came with Facebook and Word, Excel and Powerpoint apps pre-installed and they cannot be (easily) uninstalled, so I have disabled them for now.
Since the phone came with a UK plug I have ordered a EURO type Samsung USB C charger, as well as two Belkin 2 metre USB 2.0 USB A to USB C cables. I hope the latter will be able to deliver full power from the adaptive fast chargers (9V & 1.67A).
I asked for a Rhinoshield Crashguard for Xmas, so that's what I'm using for protection at the moment. I've also got a DBrand black dragon skin for the back which I haven't applied yet. (I'm still very much enjoying the ocean blue back colour.)
I used Sam Pay today and it worked fine!
That's awesome. Sounds like you made a good decision with the N9500. You got all the features you want and Samsung Pay works natively.
I'm jealous of the 256GB of storage, but I love my black N950U. These are amazing devices for sure.
I bought the 128gb version and tried SamPay today. Worked a treat!
Still a bit gutted that the region can't be changed to UK for the offers and loyalty cards but hey, 128gb blue

Using Mi 9 in the USA - Google Pay settings, carriers

Google Pay: apparently, to use it in the US, you need to go to Settings / More / Secure Element Position / use HCE wallet. The default SIM wallet gets rejected everywhere (you get "insert chip card" or "card read error"). The supposedly more secure "Secure Element" doesn't register at any terminals I encountered. Could be that the tech is too new to have support. I don't know I figured this out today after forgetting my wallet and having the gas tank empty sign pop up...
Now for carrier support - I'm in Houston, Texas. So far, I'm on MINT wireless (T-Mobile MVNO). It gets great LTE everywhere - 63.9MBps down 27.6 up at my house inside the 610 loop on a Saturday evening. In Katy, TX (west of Houston) I'm getting 13.2MBps down 8.1 up at 1045AM Monday inside a huge office building. For reference, my Moto Z2 Force on Sprint basically gets similar results and its modem is optimized for Sprint's LTE network aggregation. So I'd say that's a win.
I checked all the bands and towers prior to ordering. The missing T-Mobile US bands are B66 and B71 - these happen to be only on towers that have the Mi 9 supported bands (B2 B4 B12). I.e., you won't have B66 if you don't already have a supported band. B71 is using old over the air TV frequencies so it isn't available in most markets to begin with, as there are still TV stations occupying the band. I checked all the tower maps across the country and it looks like pretty solid coverage although I haven't gone cross country with the phone yet.
Now you can use AT&T or Cricket (MVNO) and it only is missing band 30. Apparently this can matter in congested markets but the phone supports carrier band aggregation so you are likely not to notice much difference. Anyone with experience please post your results.
Here's the link to check frequency support if you desire to see for yourself. Finding the actual towers is more work zooming in on towers to see the bands available...

Oh another side note - Google Maps works BEST in low drain mode - i.e. internal GPS mode. Saves battery and is accurate all over my area. If I do high accuracy weird things start happening. Not complaining this is a plus as it adds battery life by mistake

Yeah just get a Global Version from a reputable source - like Gearbest. I have a 64gb the 128gb is more popular. No SD Card storage and this takes the best 4k video according to benchmarks. 64gb is running $500 at the moment in Blue. I didn't use shipping insurance, they packed it VERY well, took about 10 days to get here (hybrid USPS / FedEx Smart post is free). I like the MIUI custom interface some don't. It's clean and full of cool features like clearing RAM, exploring you folders, remote app to control all your TVs. I keep Mi Cloud off and use Google Photos and backup.
There's also a few used ones 128gb on eBay but be careful - ensure they are legit and not Chinese ones flashed with Global ROMs. Common issue that's why I say go official...

Well they are cheaper for a reason. They aren't designed to be used out of China. They are missing a band (can't recall which one). They have to unlock the bootloader (15 day wait) before flashing it or have to do it some unofficial way. If you lock the BL on Global Official it will brick the Chinese phone.
Now if you want to mod it and stay on Xiaomi.eu custom ROMs then you'd be alright. Just check for the missing band I don't know if it's US or EU...
But keep in mind they can install whatever ROM or spyware or ads they want. Do you want to take that chance? If you don't care and want to install Xiaomi.eu right away get knowledgeable and don't enter anything (banking info etc) before flashing. The cheapest Chinese one I found on sale was $426 and the reviews "looked" positive on Alibaba but digging deeper tons of phone issues and no warranty service or DOA service. 45-60 day delivery times. I said screw that and paid more for a reputable source. Of course it's your choice.

Ducter -
You'd do fine with the 64GB Global. It takes 2 SIM cards right off the bat. Most people don't know you can just use Google Photos (you may need it from the Play Store) and it will store all your high res photos for free saving space on the device. https://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_009200231138.html?wid=1349303 you can use Topcashback for 3.5% off if you want. https://www.topcashback.com/ref/mslezak and use a cash back credit card over PayPal for more back. So I got 4.5% off. Or $477.50 total and no sketchy website, great packaging, and tracking.

$645 that's a kick ass phone. My brother has the latest iPhone and Samsung Galaxy I like the Mi 9 more. All your preference. Mi 9 is rated top photos and video by dxomark (https://www.diyphotography.net/xiaomi-mi9-camera-beats-out-the-iphone-xs-max-in-dxo-mark-test/) and is the fastest phone ATM see my 64GB model AnTuTu can't imagine what the extra RAM will do.
Be aware it won't come with Google apps installed although you can add it. Chinese version. You probably will need to unlock the BL (15 day wait) and burn the Xiaomi.eu ROM for best USA support. I don't know how they are selling it that cheap to be honest. $600 on AliExpress +$13 DHL shipping if you trust AliExpress... AND it still has the IR blaster, which I REALLY miss from my Lg G5 days. That is actually REALLY valuable when it comes to controlling your TV.
The MAIN reason when I even want the OnePlus 7 Pro at this point is because it is supposed to have UFS 3.0, which should make everything about the phone much faster...I just wish it was going to have an IR blaster.
...and of course the "no questions asked" bootloader unlock and rooting that OnePlus allows. I can't live without root...
From what I can see there is a 15 day wait time for the official Xiaomi unlock site. I don't even want to wait 15 days!! LOL

I cancelled an order before after reading from the Mi Store empty boxes, broken phones, used phones arriving... And they were a top rated store!
IR blaster is awesome I turn on my TVs and DVRs and it supports basically anything made (even off brand) and is super convenient
I'm using this phone in Canada. no problems with reception or anything it just works great! Main reason I bought it was for the IR blaster. A month in I must say I'm loving it! Running the eu ROM on Chinese 128gb model I bought on AliExpress

Something to note fellow modder the Mi 9 running Xiaomi.eu weekly edition can use EX Manager to overclock the GPU and people are getting 400-420k AnTuTu benchmarks depending on how you set it up. Higher end scores turn off Fsync which is all fine if your system is stable - if not it can be bad - alters memory checks. I'm not sure you want a GPU running that hot all the time - RevOS has a game mode so you can turn it on just for games or whenever you want. Battery likely will drain quickly. Nonetheless that's faster than the leaked OnePlus Pro benchmarks. Revolution OS you have to add EX Kernel manager to the Game Turbo program to get it to throttle, unlock BL, TWRP, Magisk, etc. https://sourceforge.net/projects/revolutionos-miui/files/ I think straight Xiaomi.eu is cleaner 9.4.26 but haven't tried it yet. Some people say it is rock solid even at 810Mhz OC on the GPU. 2 days left to start modding...
In all honesty OnePlus devs will likely enable the same hacks so take the phone you prefer.
I'm using the Chinese variant on ATT. No issues whatsoever. I unlocked the BL and running ROS rom. Using GPay also. I bought it online from Giztop.
