Camera zoom issue since .146 - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello,
I'm on .146 now and the camera won't show the 5x zoom button anymore.
And if I choose 3x zoom the same camera will be used as with 1x. (The camera under the flash will not be activated)
On wide angle the camera changed normal.
Can someone confirm that?

For me it also doesn't work in progress mode and also not in video mode.
The camera under the flash won't work.

I got .153 right now. Camera is working again.

on 146, the one below flash, that is 8MP 3X telephoto lens is disabled entirely. good that you noticed.
Huawei, what's happening?

On .153 the 8mp 3x was working for some time after upgrade, but now it's still not working again.
I've already tried to reboot the phone but the problem with the 3x camera is still there.
Really bad.
Gesendet von meinem LYA-L29 mit Tapatalk

can someone with 9.0.0.171 check if the lens below flash is working?
with camera app open, try covering the lens with your finger and look into all camera modes to figure it out.
If 171 doesn't have it, and given that we'll have to wait for months to get 171, then thumbs down to Huawei..

I've tested again some time on .153
Sometime the camera under the flash will be activated, and sometimes not.
Sometimes it does some time and almost on refocus camera is switching.
That really sucks.

Doing some tests, I think it behaves the same as the iPhone used to (and maybe still does?) behave.
I'm on. 146 and in poor light conditions, the 3x zoom will keep using the primary lens because of its wider aperture (F1.8 vs F2.4 which you can confirm by taking a photo and looking at its info).
If I keep my finger in front of the 3x lens and start moving towards a brighter room, it will switch to the 3x lens and I will see my finger.
I can replicate this both in the photo (ai turned off) and pro modes.
I am trying to find if I can force it to use the 3x camera in pro mode in low light by forcing some settings like Iso or shutter speed but so far no luck.
---------- Post added at 03:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:28 PM ----------
Interesting fact: when zooming 3x, it seems that in aperture, night and portrait modes, it will only use the primary lens no matter how good the lightning condition is.

It is the same behavior as every single flagship with a telephoto lens. It won't use the 3x lens unless lighting is optimal, or your hands are shaking too much for the main lens.

Does the 3X optical ALWAYS work in PRO mode?

No, if you read my post, it behaves the same as auto and disable the 3x camera if light is too low. Haven't found a way to force it. At least as of firmware 146

I managed to force the 3x to always stay enabled. You have to shoot in pro mode AND in raw. This way, the phone will not override the lens setting.
That said, I'm not sure how good the results will be. I'll do some tests when I'm back home with a tripod and editing in lightroom.
The advantage of letting the camera choose the primary lens is a lower Iso setting and most likely image stacking to reduce camera shake, noise, etc. It might actually end up giving a better image than what could be done with lightroom, especially in a more common scenario where you'd shoot handheld.

Mod & Stock Camera Comparisons !!!

Hi Everyone, this post is not to hurt anyone. i respect all developers and everyone who contribute to this Forum
i have flashed Cloudy Pro II V1.2 rom on my G2. Everything was perfect ( one word amazing) but my only worry was Camera. i have a strong feeling that the camera has lost image in depth quality and clarity in images. i dont know which MOD was added to Cloudy Pro 1.2 rom. but still i have flashed Jishnu's & Xdabbeb Camera Mods. But the result was the same.
so i though of removing the camera apk that came with rom and tried to replace stock camera, but i failed (unfortunately stopped error) - may be the reason could be this Rom is based on G Pro 2.
i started asking suggestions everyone what's needed to be done to come on Stock 4.4.2 Camera with this ROM. but everyone suggested Xdabbeb & Jishnu's Camera. so finally i thought of a real comparison with stock camera.
though these mods are capable of more features like 4k/magic focus etc, my main concern was image quality
All Left images were taken by LG G2 Stock 4.4.2 Camera.
All Right images were taken by LG G2 Cloudy Pro II V1.2 with Xdabbeb Camera Mod.
Pictures were Clicked with same settings on both phones
Can any one suggest me how to mod Stock G2 or G Pro 2 Camera in Cloudy Pro II ROM......please i love this ****ing awesome ROM

I like right one more. Better white balance and reflections.
camera mod
yeah the right one looks better in my opinion. Also the only thing I don't like about this camera is that the auto focus is slow, there is no option for continuous focus.
Hey so I had a question so you tried both xbaees camera mod and jinushus camera mod. Which was better in your opinion than the stock cloudypro 1.2 because auto focus is really slow for me.

The picture on the right is underexposed loosing details on shadows, has much more chroma noise than the left and it is more bluish. Were the lights yellow where you shoot the pictures?...

I can not make a judgement here because the right pictures are underexposed... :cyclops:
One point that much people confuse is about white balance, they think a picture has correct white balance if the whites are white and this is wrong (except for studio shoots), the correct white balance is when the picture is near to the real life, so the left should be better.
I think you should test again the cameras in two situations, night and day, in day with some trees, grass and sky and the most important thing, you should do a correct exposure compensation (brightness in stock camera) in both shoots, in the day shoots, try not to use auto WB, I dont use auto WB even in pro cameras.
For taking pictures, I recommend to use Camera FV-5 with banding disabled, is the camera application I like most, you can do exposure lock and focus lock separately, I dont like to use a camera app without that functionality.
What the mods to is to decrease the shutter speed and increase the ISO so it can capture moving objects in darker scenes without them getting blurry. This can result in underexposed pictures and more noise which seems to be the case here.
Better on left. Accept it guys, those mods dont do anything good. Imho

The statement in red is wrong, the increasing ISO increments noise as you can see in the pictures, if you increase speed and ISO respecting the equation of exposure, it will get correct exposure.
Another important point, users should try to avoid increasing ISO if its possible, increasing ISO has bad impact in the photo in noise, color rendition degrades and dynamic range diminishes as ISO increases .
You can not do magic with the LG G2 sensor, its the same crap you will find in every smartphone.

why don't you try HDR SNAP Camera to see how capable is LG G2 camera

HDR+ mode: barely any effect on dynamic range?

In my experience, the stock camera's HDR+ mode works great for suppressing noise in low-light pics, but doesn't really do much for actual high dynamic range scenes.
In a typical dark foreground/sunny background situation, my (2014) Moto X used to do a great job keeping the highlights from overexposing and bringing up the dark parts of the scene. My 6P, on the other hand, using the stock Google camera with HDR+ active, barely seems to do anything in this respect. Sunny skies are still blown out, faces in the foreground almost black. I'm not looking for an overprocessed HDR "effect", but this seems a little too subtle.
I just want to make sure this isn't a problem specific to my device, so: anyone else seeing the same thing?
Edit -- I tried a couple of dedicated HDR apps from the Play Store but they all say that the 6P lacks exposure mode so they can't do the bracketing needed for true HDR.
I feel the same. Compared to the LG G4 I had before, HDR on 6P barely does anything.
Maybe its my old eyes, but I can't noticed a real difference either.
Thanks folks. So it isn't just me.
Maybe "HDR" is just a poorly chosen name for this feature. Like I said, for noisy low-light pics it works really well. Just look closely while it's still processing: shortly after it finishes, you can see the noisy version being replaced with much cleaner picture. But apparently it's not optimized for high-contrast scenes.
Verstuurd vanaf mijn Nexus 6P met Tapatalk
Actually it works really well. Here's why: it saves you from blowing your highlights. It doesn't do much for shadows, however it gives you a very clean image where your able to boost the shadows to your liking and the image remains clean. It stays away from that garbage fake "HDR" look that most apps create.
Also! Proshot does exposure bracketing very well. Here is a screenshot of how to setup the settings for it to work. Use these settings and you'll be fine.

Hey, thanks.
What got me doubting was an example in the article where Google introduced the feature, here. In the second example (the landscape with the two girls in the foreground), the difference is quite pronounced. The image on the right, shot with HDR+ on, has a fully defined sky with visible clouds etc.
But I've shot images with HDR+ on that looked a lot more like the blown-out comparison shot on the left, with large highlight zones with no detail captured at all. Could be I was asking too much of it on those occasions, I'm not sure. I'll experiment a little more and try and get some examples.
ProShot is great, thanks for the tip, just bought the full version!
Hi, I've been struggling with HDR apps on the 6P thanks to the exposure compensation bug (https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=196815) and was hoping your Pro Shot setting might help. When I tried it I got three photos, but two were at the same exposure, while the third was much much brighter. It also doesn't seem to merge them together automatically.

Instead of using SPD4 use SPD1.
Also, proshot doesn't merge them for you. You have to do that yourself.

Noup, you're not the only one I usually have to choose between having blowed out skies or having people underexposed ...
I just switched to my 6P from an LG G4. While I liked the HDR on the camera, I feel the 6P produces a better image overall. Much less sharpening/watercolor look to the 6P photos. The LG's started to look like fake watercolors when you view them on anything but the phone, unless the light was absolutely perfect, which it rarely was.
But with that said, HDR seems to be terrible on this phone with the stock app, in my limited experience.

Take a picture inside by a window and you can see the difference with HDR+ on. You can basically see what's outside the window with HDR+ on but the window looks blown out with it off.
This... I've written about this before saying that it shouldn't be called HDR+ but instead Low Light+. The HDR effect is minimal compared to the low light noise reduction.
Typically on an iPhone you can get reasonable backlit photos. When I tried to do the same on my Nexus 6p, HDR+ offered little to no improvement. I decided to use my iPhone instead which did a mich better job for actually adding dynamic range.

Pixel Camera vs. Stock

The port for the Pixel camera has been majorly updated and I just installed it. I'm trying to tweak settings and things (man there are a lot now!) on the Pixel camera with HDR+ always on and I was wondering how many of you are also figuring out which is the best setting. Any tips?
More importantly, has anyone done trials and seen which cameras is taking more consistently great pictures? The Pixel camera was simply but MAN it rarely let me down. So I'm tempted to try and use it as my main camera for a while and see how it compares to stock. Any thoughts? Has anyone done this?

Interesting... So did you try taking the same picture with both and compare or did you just seem to like the Pixel ones better?
Why did you set it to Nexus and not Pixel for that first setting? Just curious! Not sure the difference, haha.
Well, dynamic range is far superior shooting with the Pixel Camera compared with the stock camera; there's less noise too. I shot with both cameras, always getting a better result with the google camera. I set the conf camera to Nexus as was getting less dynamic range and dull photos with the Pixel one. I mean, I like lively colors . I think it is a matter of preference when it comes to color accuracy.

The one that starts IMG is from the pixel camera app, should be the second one. Notice the better exposure on the sign, cleaner lines on the fence and more detail in the leaves in the lower center. Coming from the pixel, which I unfortunately did not have with me, I feel like the pixel camera app is a definite improvement over the stock auto camera app.

This would be a fantastic test. Please let me know what your findings are!
I mean, if the Pixel got a 90 from DXO Mark or whatever that site is, does that mean the Note 8 should be a 90+? I think the actual sensor on the Pixel isn't that impressive - it was the software that made it so amazing. So if this software is truly 100% ported, I'd think our Note 8 camera could be even better!
(plus maybe the new Pixel 2 camera will be ported too...)
If you are having more success with the Pixel camera vs the stock can you please post the settings you are using? I've tried a few different variations and the Pixel camera is much noiser in lower light photos and it ups the ISO twice as much as the stock camera to achieve the same exposure.

Greetings,
I will upload screenshots of my settings once I get home today. Thanks.
can you both apps on the same phone at once ? or does having pixel installed disable stock camera ?
my only issue with stock camera it tends to over exposures alot of scenes like portraits and I end up having to auto correct. night time shots are on point.

have a 2x optical zoom question? is my device defective?

So I got an s9+ and part of the reason I wanted the upgrade was the telephoto lens and having optical zoom. But within an hour of using the phone, by playing around with the camera and covering different lenses while browsing through the options, I noticed that I could not get the telephoto lens to activate only but a few times and for maybe a picture or two. Everything is being operated through the main sensor with variable aperture.
I guess my main question regarding the 2x telephoto lens is when exactly is it supposed to come into action? As far as my device goes, I have only consistently been able to get it to work with live focus, with the ability to see both wide angle and telephoto after the fact, so at least I know in some form it does work.
There have been many times when I first enter in the camera app, instantly press the 2x and noticed that the cameras did actually shift, only to have it switch back permanently within seconds.
Shooting video has been a mixed bag as well, i have tried different settings and zooming in and out and there have only been a couple times shooting videos that when 2x is hit, it actually changes to the 2x lens and it takes over from there. Besides those few times, there is absolutely no switch, both proved by the lack of choppy transition from each lens as well as the fact I can cover the sensor and nothing happens on the viewfinder when it says it's in 2x zoom.
Attached are some youtu.be links that I screen recorded in various situations, using Pinch to zoom, and also using the actual 2x zoom icon in the stock camera app. But still not being able to get the 2x to work. It seems like since I've noticed this issue, I can't get the lens to switch unless I'm using live focus and it has to take a photo from each lens. What's weird is the phone will go digital zoom all the way from 1x up to 10x and it is horrible, and I could've swore samsung advertises it being a 2x optical zoom with added digital zoom to achieve 10x but how could that be?
Any ideas of what Im doing wrong, if anything? Or is this something I should bring up to Samsung? Also I got my phone at Verizon so possibly try to get a replacement?
Thanks to everyone in advance!!
Interesting. Try live focus, the phone switches to that second camera. So does that mean in theory the s9 could also have 2x zoom by way of cropping image size?
Edit: should had read your whole post, but I am seeing the same.

Sry I misspoke a little on previous post, when I said live photo I meant using live focus. And yes, using live focus is the only real way that I can see proof the module is working, as after the picture is take I still have the option to select and edit either the main sensor or the 2x sensor.. It's very strange!
The telephoto camera is configured to only work in bright sunlight. Which is annoying.

Thats not true. I have tested it just now in my room, with no bright sunlight nor other bright light. When I click the x2 it zooms optically with the telephoto lens, I see it when I put my finger in front of it. What I saw, is that when I cover the telephoto lens completely, it then switches to the other lens, but if it is clear it works.
So I was able to do some more tests first thing after sunrise, and I am also seeing this being a lighting issue, or rather lack of light that's causing the main sensor to take over..
Most of my previous tests were done in my room and also in other dimly lit areas. Which explains why I was only able to get it working a couple times and the situation has to be right..
I tried it out last night and I noticed the 2x lens was being used only when I had a background light in the picture, and as soon as the light got out of the viewfinder, it would switch back to the main sensor.
I really appreciate your guy's help on this..
I'm not sure I like how samsung has this 2x lens setup and it's almost like the 2x sensor is so bad compared to the main sensor, that in almost all situations the main sensor will end with a better and cleaner picture. Is this how the Note 8 handles its 2x lens as well?
I've been playing around a little with my S9+, it looks like in auto mode, when set to "X2", it only switches to the secondary (narrow) camera when the light is very bright.
In pro mode (where I would've expected to be able to control the sensor in use), I couldn't get the secondary camera to work at all (even if I manually select F2.4 aperture, that matches both cameras).
I've also noticed the X1/X2 indication in auto mode gets mixed up on certain conditions.
I've been noticing this since day 1. Mostly indoors and low lighting, it's the digital zoom from the main shooter that comes into play. Rarely the Telephoto lens is used for 2x zoom and is used primarily for live focus.
android 9 tossed the "2x"
I just (02/23/19) upgraded my Galaxy S9 to Android 9 and have found that the camera app no longer has the "2X" on the screen to allow usage of the optical zoom lens. I there another way to access that?
It looks like this now

Not satisfied with the camera

Anyone else not satisfied with the camera?
I already took a great shot but most of them just feel soft and not sharp at all!
A lot of noise as well when zooming in.
I'm quite shocked as my OnePlus 3 takes better pictures (GCam).
The selfie cam is the worst. On OP3 I can basically see all of my skins pores, beard hair etc.
On the mate it's just soft(no matter the setting).
I'm on firmware 122 btw.
Would be good to know if that's just my taste or a wrong setting maybe?
Thanks!
In general:
Very satisified with the back camera.
But the selfiecam is kind of 'boring'.
You should provide pics to make your case as the question is so broad and the answers are so many.
Took a few pics today and really impressed with the back camera. The front camera isn't great and beautifies every image and looks soft. Hopefully a software update could fix this. Came from a pixel 2 which I think are the ones to beat at moment for camera phones.
Back camera is really great. In selfie camera there is an option to switch off beauty mode. Try with that option and you will get better selfies than Samsung Galaxy flagships.
I just posted to a similar thread over in news aand discussion.....
I too am disappointed with the M20 pro camera, mostly indoors in not so good (but hardly terrible) light the images are really quite soft
Looking at the exif it always seems to choose a really low shutter speed and as others have said no OIS on the main camera. Like I said disappointing, I am on .238, no idea if there are any camera improvements to come on .266 or 9.1?
Light can change your thoughts
Yes the mate 20p camera tends to take soft and sometimes blurry photos. I blame the lack of OIS.
With a little extra effort you can take awesome photos, but for point and shoot many other phones do that better.
I just moved from op3 to mate 20 pro, principally for the camera and... I'm disappointed, my ops3 photo's with gcam are a lot better! All photos in middle light (and hdr condition) look like they are painted!
I tried to make some side by died) side comparison and one plus 3 photos are better in everything

Me is not possibile, I was keeping one phone in a hand and the other one in the other, setting i don't know maybe.. M but I just opened the camera and chosen hdr..., have you some setting to suggest?
Some photos are good but others no..., color are a little bit more ok and grass looks painted
Now in no more at home, this weekend I'm coming to post some comparisons if needed

Are you using vivid mode? Try turning that to standard
I'm very satisfied with the camera, I think this is all about setting, not the camera or the phone.

I tried that setting but it doesn't look to influence the "painted effect"
This weekend on going to make a more detailed test and on case I'm going to post some photos

Turn off AI maybe. Honestly if you're trying to tell us one of the best rated phone cameras of all time gets bested by one of the most mediocre, you'd better have some valid evidence lol
My only gripe is the AI sometimes gets confused like when it thought this shot was winter and it changed the images completely

That is a totally feasible complaint as I have had this happen as well. Sometimes AI is better off for certain shots for sure
That's why it is handy on the latest 9.1 update to turn on and off without going into settings. You can also of course click the X when it detects what it think it is. I have had no issues with the camera in default mode and actually find it performs better after the last update, especially the transition when going to 3x zoom.
what bugs me is the "hold steady while camera sharpens the image".
Is there a way to avoid this?

Nope, The phone is taking a auto hdr(thats even more extreme than the HDR mode btw) photo, generally it doesnt matter if you move or take another photo while the camera tells you that, i just ignore it.
