Plugged it in, got device not recognised. Win7 64bit. Has previously been fine.
Have reinstalled ADB, chipset, USB3 drivers and Huawei's USB drivers.
Still not recognised.
Have tried different leads, different ports and a laptop. Same result, not recognised.
Anything else I can try before hard reset and possible return?
Was going to say check it on another computer, but then realised you had already checked it on a laptop as well. You could just double check the usb port is clear of dust or fluff.
Are you seeing the popup window on your tablet that asks what type of usb connection you want? My computer never recognizes the tablet until I choose file transfer--until then the tablet and computer don't communicate and the tablet only uses the usb port for charging.

Yup. Still not recognised. Tried different leads, checked for fluff, all the obvious things.
This is the only Android device out of 7? 8? which is not recognised which leads me to suspect I've 'broken' it by disabling some system bloat and something in Huawei's system bloat doesn't like that fact.
A hard reset ought to confirm that, annoying as I've got it just so but it's not the end of the world.
The tablet is otherwise fine.
[SOLVED]
Plugged the tablet in with the original supplied USB lead and it's now working.
Funny thing is that I've never used it, I've always used other quality leads which were already plugged in.

So, I just got a HTC HD2 and am trying to connect it to the PC. By the way, did the TMOUSA HD2 ever come with a cd?
I have a vista and tried to download the Activesync 4.5 but it won't allow as I am suppose to download Windows Mobile Device Center. So, I download WMDC and installed it. I plug in the phone and all I get is "USB Device Not Recognized" . PC doesn't detect it.
I have searched everywhere and tried everything but can't seem to get it going. I haven't anything solid to get it to work.
I tried:
-reinstalling the WMDC
-check and uncheck "Enable faster data sync"
Anybody have any idea? TIA
Is the phone charging LED lighting up when connected?
Have you tried another USB cable and/or another computer?
Then you could boot the phone up in Bootloader Mode. It will say 'serial' at the bottom of the screen. Then plug in the USB cable. The 'serial' should change to 'USB'. Then this might indicate that your computer is viewing the device as a unknown device. This device can be removed and your phone, in normal mode, replugged in.
This may not help, but it's worth a try. Vista has a known issue where it just stops recognising USB devices, even basic ones. Plug your phone in via USB and then restart the computer. When it comes back on it may recognise the phone. If this works then it will be okay for a while at least, but you may have to do this again every now and then.
Vista's basically a bug-ridden bag of gash. If you can, upgrade to Windows 7.
Hope this helps mate.

I tried with a laptop with vista (WMDC) and a laptop with xp (activesync 4.5). The led charging light is on, so it is charging but for some reason device not recognized.
I tried the bootloader (not sure what that does) and it says serial and then I plugged in the usb and it still says serial.
Still not working

I think I tried that already but I'll give it a shot again. At this point, I'll do anything lol. I was so stoked in putting android in this too
does any one think a hard reset might help?
It sounds as though the USB controller in the phone is damaged. I had this problem with my HTC Diamond, and searched for ages trying to find a solution. I manged to flash it with a couple of times with different ROMs (from the internal memory via WiFi) - this did not solve the problem.
I am sure that a power surge from a car charger was the cause of the fault.

it couldn't hurt. i would - see what happens.
try checking cabling first or change the cable
Same problem
I am having the exact same problem. My phone can charge on the computer but I cant sync of even access it via the "Disk Drive" setting. I have tried both AcrtiveSync and the Disk Drive option, unchecking fast data synchronization, reseting the phone, and reinstalling WMDC. I have Windows 7 with the latest updates. I have also tried connecting it to two other Win7 machine with identical "device not recognized" results. The phone and cable and practically brand new. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm at my wits end with this phone and it has been beyond frustrating.

Try another pc... buddy wid wmdc in it... go for win 7
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I am having same problems have tried on a vista pc, my mac and mac running parallels, nothing works. Reckon it is as fred_up says, damaged usb controller which means no NAND Android for me.
Been having similar problems, but seems to have been less likely to occur if I click "Safely remove hardware" in Vista or W7, and remove the device - yes even Activesync (doesn't seem to be available in XP)
Mark
did anybody find a soulution?
hi
did anybody get solution for this? i m having the same problem.
phone doesnt sync with wmdc, nor connect as disk, only charges itself.
message appears "usb device not recognised"
i have done everything, changed cables, pcs, re installed wmdc, even flashed new roms using micro sd....nothing happened.
is this a hardware issue? why can it be charged but not synchronised?
pls help anybody.
Try another Cable. In my case, changing the cable works. Now i m using my HD mini cable with HD2 and it is working well.

thanks,
but i have already tried all that.
today i called a phone repair shop and they told me that
this could be due to two reasons.
1. usb port problem.-in which case it is replaceable for about 15 usd.
2. problem with an IC (?) of the circuit (guess the motherboard) - in which case
it is either not repairable or very expensive.
i ll keep posting as i go and visit the shop.
if there's another solution pls share here.
Some possible solutions to non-USB
Having come here via a search, I'll resurrect the thread with a brief comment. I'm having the same problem, haven't tried them yet but found several promising suggestions:

oops...had forgotten all about this thread, until today till i received the notice about new reply.
thanks for resurrecting the thread.
actually i went to that phone repair shop i mentioned earlier and they fixed it by replacing the usb port. still it didnt work with win 7 laptops. but was fine with xp laptops. dont know why...anyway i have said good bye to my hd2 long ago & using android now
guess lots of people are.
good luck to you all.
My problem is that I cannot connect my Galaxy S II to computer. When I try to connect it only says "unknown device". I have tried with newest Kies and without Kies. With multiple computers with Vista and Windows 7 32bit. Also downloaded Samsung Galaxy S drivers manually from web but with no avail. And I have tried with Usb-debugging on and without it. I also tested USB-mass storage setting but it does nothing. Computer also says "unknown device" when I try to connect phone while in download mode.
The charging works btw.
When I connect the cable my phone just makes the normal sound but the mass storage android man newer appears to top tray. I have also made factory reset and cache delete from recovery but with no luck.
I would like to flash different rom with Odin but I cannot do that when the connection is not working. My current rom is official XXLPQ ics. The usb cable isn't the problem because I have tried with different cables which work normally with other phones.
Is the warranty repair only solution? Really wouldn't want to be without my Galaxy during the repair time.
Sounds like it's going to need a check over, if it wasn't for the fact you have tried multiple computers AND leads, as I had a similar problem but found it was down to my PC needing a fresh install.
Unless others with similar experiences have advice it doesn't sound good, as though pins 2, 3, or 4 have problems maybe, or that the board within the phone has bent up or down through rough handling/tug on the cable.
When did it start happening? I had a fright by tripping over the phone while plugged in, and ripped the plug out while launching the phone across the room. It broke the charger and thought I'd killed the port on the phone, but found if I propped the plug up and put weight on the phone it would connect, like this...

Might work if the board has got a whack like mine did.

As I mentioned earlier I have tried all that.
Having a strange problem with my phone atm.
The other day I tried connecting to my PC (Win 7) to try and root my phone, only to find that my computer wouldn't recognize the phone. I've had this problem once before with my old Droid X, and that was due to me accidentally reversing the power lines on a homemade USB Host cable, which ultimately fried the USB port.
I thought maybe something similar had happened, as i've been using another homemade Host cable for charging the phone lately. This cable had never given me problems in the past, but I thought maybe something came lose and shorted. However, using that same cable, I can connect a mouse or a keyboard to my phone no problem, so I know that the USB port is still working. Because of this, i'm under the impression that the phone is maybe stuck in host mode?
I thought it might be the cable I was using, but I just bought a fresh one and it's doing the same thing: I'll hear the Win 7 device connected tone go off twice, but it won't show up with the rest of my drives, and the USB connection icon won't show up in the status bar on the phone, although the phone charges fine.
Tried factory reset, didn't help.
Also tried it on two different computers, and no dice. All the computers have the Motorola Device Manager installed.
Any ideas?
EDIT: ****! Wrong section
EDIT: Dunno if this is "progress", but after cleaning the port out with rubbing alcohol, and reinstalling the motorolla device manager, I now get a "USB device not recognized" error every time I plug the thing in... Mouse still works fine though.
Fixed it, for anybody who actually is reading this.
First, since my phone worked fine as a USB host, I tried taking one of my cables and grounding pin 4 to turn it into a Host cable.
No dice. I noticed a resistor on pin 4 though, which I thought was kinda weird for something that's supposed to be floating.
Then I read up about the whole "motorola factory cable" thing. Took the same cable, undid the Host mod, and then pulled out the resistor. Voila! Problem solved.
I guess the "Universal" in "Universal Serial Bus" was just a joke, right?
First, i apologize if there is already a thread regarding this, but everything ive came across searching on google/xda has come to no avail.
i just got the i777, plugged it into my computer and nothing happens. on my phone it says "mtd connected" and charges.
ive turned on usb debugging, installed samsung kies, installed the drivers, tried the "dial *#7248#(or whatever it is), ive tried 3 different usb cables, all the usb ports on my laptop (brand new alienware), and also 2 other laptops. nothing works
my computer also makes the sound that its been connected. if i go into device manager it shows as Other devices > 7 CDC's with the yellow exclamation mark
if someone .could PLEASE help me it would be much obliged, all i want to do is start flashing again

Probably a bad usb connector on your phone. What rom are you currently on?
I was fearing this. Its all stock, not even rooted.
IF i have to get a new usb port, do i have to do any soldering?
When I had this problem I downloaded multiple different drivers and eventually found ones that worked . Try Google searching i777 usb drivers. I downloaded ones that worked from softpedia actually.

No soldering required. It's just a ribbon cable that connects to the main chip. Took me about an hour from start to finish, but i was being really careful.

He has said his computer recognizes the device, albeit it sees it as an unknown device. And it makes a sound when plugging it in. This tells me it's not a usb port problem but a driver problem. I have had this same problem. As I stated above. Even after installing kies it still didn't recognize it. I had to install the android sdk package, open the program and update, and then it still wouldn't recognize it. I had to download separate usb drivers for the phone as well. Who knows why, some computers or operating systems just have a harder time with the drivers. That's the problem in my opinion. Here's hoping it's not a usb port problem. Also this would prevent charging if it were a faulty usb port on the phone wouldn't it?

I wonder if the OP tried this on a computer with Windows XP. I've noticed Vista and 7 seem to have a hard time discovering/installing some usb devices. As for it not charging also..I think the pins inside the port are used separately for charging and connecting to pc.
My computer recognized my phone fine back when it was the Captivate, but it has a really hard time with my GS2. It often will say "invalid hardware id" or not show up at all. Usually it's fixed by swapping ports.
Hey!
Device: GS4 (SCH-i545 VZW variant running Android 5.0.1)
I've recently came across a somewhat damaged galaxy S4, when I got home, I attempted to connect the device to my computer, and everytime I receive this stupid error.
"The USB device you've plugged in has malfunctioned and windows cannot recognize it", Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43), A request for the USB device descriptor failed.
So I go inspect the device info in Device Manager, select hardware IDs, and this is what I'm given instead.
USB\DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE
Once again, not helpful at all.
What I have done:
- Tested the cable with another device, worked just fine.
- Installed Samsung Kies & Smart Switch, to no avail.
- Tried EVERY USB port on my computer
- Uninstalled all samsung related software, rebooted & tried everything again..... still nothing.
- I've even gone as far as uninstalling all the root USB hub drivers in hopes to resolve this problem.
- I have rooted the device, and enabled the hidden menu, have used *#0808# to change the USB types, none of them work, all reported the same errors.
I'm debating on if this is become a hardware issue, instead of software-related. What do you guys think? Am I doing something wrong, have I forgotten something? My computer is running windows 10, and I'm about to use my other laptop with an earlier version of windows to see if Win10 is just the culprit. I have also tried plugging this device into another machine running windows 10, nothing here as-well. EVEN tried to plug the device in on a machine running Ubuntu, once again, not a single thing happened, not even a notification that the device was plugged in.
The strangest thing is the device charges perfectly, even when plugged in to the computers, the data transfer capabilities do not.
EDIT #2 The device seems to be at fault, just got another S4 with slight cosmetic damage and plugged it into the computer, no errors.
So if it's the device that's damaged, it looks like it was dropped on the bottom right side of the phone, screen completely shattered off there where the back button is, and sent cracks all up the screen, and then was sat on (i guess)
What would be the appropriate method of cheaply replacing the USB port, or finding out whether some parts of the system have become corrupted. (Willing to bet it's broken hardware)
