The situation
I have a 64GB MicroSD inside a tablet. It is formatted with FAT32. FAT32 is still the most compatible when connecting it to TVs, PCs etc. The card is full too so that's another reason I want to leave the MicroSD unchanged. But I want to download files in excess of 4GB now using taxpayer-funded public wifi (and FAT32 doesn't support large files).
The plan
I want to connect a 32GB USB memory stick to the tablet with a USB On-The-Go (OTG) cable. It will be used to download various Linux ISOs in excess of 4 GB each.
Is this possible?
PS. Yesterday I became aware of https://github.com/Lurker00/Android-fs and installed it, but I still cannot 'see' the files on my USB stick (I formatted with both exfat and ntfs using a Windows 7 laptop). I think this github project is just meant for MicroSD cards, not USB.
Is there a workable solution to download Linux ISOs (in excess of 4GB) on a USB stick using Android 4, 5 or 6?

I recently purchased a Adata Class 6, 16gb Micro SD from Newegg. It worked just fine in the phone with FAT32, and passed all diagnostics that I ran in Pocket Mechanic. Then I decided to format it in NTFS so I could store files larger than 4gb on it. My PC recognizes the card when the device is in storage mode, but the phone does not recognize the card. Is there a fix that will enable the device to use the NTFS card?
Thanks in advance!
*Edit* I just asked someone in my EQ guild that works for AT&T. Apparently Win Mobile doesn't support NTFS at all.
There is no real reason for it to be NTFS anyway.
I mean, I gues giant files, but at that point, get a flash drive.
currently i have a gs3 running omega rom v27.2 with a 64gb microsd exfat formatted.
i've noticed that in windows i cannot copy a file >4gb to the microsd card on the phone via usb cable. it just stops with a error saying it exceeds the device limit.
in the past, probably i month ago (no idea what omega rom version i was using) i had no difficulty transferring a >4gb file to the phone via the usb cable
so the only option i have now is to:
-take off the phone tough case (<-the most annoying part)
-pop the back off
-eject the microsd card out of the phone
-put microsd into adapter
-find the card reader
-then copy the >4gb file to the microsd
-then do all the above in the reverse
that's 12 steps vs 1 click to copy file to the phone in the past when it had no limit on file size
i tried foxhound 0.7 rom, also same problem.
is there a solution ?
A work-around might be to format the card as NTFS. The S3 doesn't natively support NTFS but there are apps that add support.
I've been using NtfsSd on the S3 for a while now, because I share the card with my Transformer Prime and that reboots randomly when it has an exFAT card inserted.
Hopefully there's a proper solution to your issue, but as work-arounds go this one's not so bad.
yeah i tried formatting the 64gb microsd into ntfs then using the paragon ntfs&hfs+ app
but even that doesnt let me copy >4gb files to the microsd card when the phone is connected by usb cable. same error. file size exceeds the device limit which is crap.
This is in no way a solution, but have you tried SGS 3 Easy UMS? At least you won't have to keep on removing your memory card from the phone.
i hadn't used sg3 easy ums for a while cos last time i used it, it corrupted my memory card but that was a much older version.
just tried it:
-hit ums mode , detected the microsd on the pc, and it seems to work
-copying 8gb file to the microsd as i type
at least now i can copy to the microsd in the phone without the hassle :good:
How to mount an USB stick formatted ext2/3/4?
When I connect a FAT formatted stick, it works, NTFS too using the Paragon_NTFS TC plugin.
I thought ext2/3/4 is supported, when the system and internal storage is on an ext4 partition.
Has the tablet to be rooted?
Tried also an ext3 formatted SDCard in the tablet, the result is the same - it says the card is empty or an unsupported filesystem..
The format it is told to read the sd card is different from the format it's told to read the system as. I'd say you'd have to be rooted if making any changes to what's readable versus what's not. The only thing is I'm not too sure on how exactly you'd do that other than using a cwm recovery and adding an extension partition on your card.
I'm afraid I need to do something like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/dell-venue/general/guide-ext4-microsd-card-dell-venue-8-t3042906
The main problem is, I can't root my Venue because I've encrypted the filesystem.
I'm afraid I have to reformat my USB sticks to FAT32/NTFS ...
Decrypt then? Root and recrypt?
Edit: did you buy a large as card?
My 32 is in but have only had issues with higher cards like 64 and 128. There's an application I once used to format the card on board but when I plugged it into PC whether Linux or win, they'd get corrupted. So now the 128 lives in my laptop and the 64 in phone. 32 for the tablet for me is plenty. Onboard formatted to exFat I believe. Backup your goods. [emoji12]
Edit 2: I'm sure there's an app for that. No? Sorry, I was talking micro SD like a MF, lol! Stuff like that is not cool but I throw everything on my biggest USB 128 and it's formatted to NTFS but my others are just fat and don't read either.
According the instructions when encrypting, there is no decrypting, only factory reset.
I have a 64GB card, formatted to FAT32, no issues so far.
The idea was to use an EXT3 formatted USB thumb drive for big files (movies), so far I'm bypassing the problem with a NTFS formatted USB thumb drive and the Paragon_NTFS TC plugin but I have to copy the big file to the internal storage because the plugin doesn't make the NTFS drive visible for other apps than TC (Total Commander).
Edit: There are apps for mounting USB EXT2/3/4 (USB OTG Helper, USB Mount All, StickMount) but they all require root.
Then follow the crowd and. ..
Root it, root it, root it.... lol
Those were the apps I've used before and I root every device I own before I even get comfy with it.
Recently purchased some 64GB mSD cards and found my original (unmodified) Nook Tablet would not recognize them.
Am still considering what version of CM to install but am favoring CM11.0 KitKat (Android 4.4.4) for my Nook Tablet (esp if can use exFAT mSD cards).
Background: I am still using a WinXP Desktop PC (standalone No Internet) for basic Word Processing and Photo Editing and found WinXP would not recognize the 64GB mSD cards. Googled and found WinXP needs an exFAT driver. "Description of the exFAT file system driver update package" https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/955704 Have the same problem with some of my Android devices so Googled using "Android exFAT driver" but did not find a Google driver like found for WinXP. This was originally posted "Android exFAT Driver?" http://androidforums.com/threads/android-exfat-driver.1005003/
Received answer from svim "Android already includes support for exFAT to a limited extent....if your phone doesn't already support USB OTG (a lot of newer phones do but not all), it's not a trivial task to add OTG support as it requires rooting your phone and a change to its Linux kernel."
This whole problem shows how little I know about Android!
Since this posting I was told by a friend that it is possible to Format a 64GB exFAT mSD card with FAT32 and should be recognized by Android device.
Before doing this, thought I would ask if any Nook Tablet owners are using 64GB (or larger) mSD cards?
If yes please tell what you did to successfully use these larger mSD Cards?
Thanks
Ken
The Nook Tablet specs indicate that 32 GB is the maximum SD card size. I doubt it will be able to deal with a 64 GB card.
I just realise that the tablet doesn't support exfat formated sd card. I tried to connect the card via the port (phantom 4 footage) and say it is not support exfat /ntfs format. The strange thing is that my note 10 plus support exfat and open the files. Unacceptable for this device. I hope there will be a fix soon. Does anybody knows any other method to open this kind of formats?
If the card is larger than 32 GB, then it's microSDXC. These cards come from the factory already formatted as exFAT because that's what the SD Association's specification requires. microSDXC has been available since 2009; surely the S7/S7+ support it. You can learn more than you ever wanted to know about SD cards from the excellent Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SD_card.
I'd suggest you reformat your card, but not in your tablet. Instead, use the SD Association's formatting utility for Windows or Mac: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/. It configures the correct block size specific to your card.
My 512GB exFat card works just fine in my Tab S7+/LTE. I'd do like Steve suggests and reformat the card - sounds like either the block size is off or it isn't either of the formats you mention. Also AFAIK, NTFS isn't a supported option nor is HPFS.
