I have a question, when I flash custom beta rom then how do I catch updates of final releases. I have to flash the whole rom again?
Depends of the rom, depends of the upgrade type...
At every update reflashing over a full rom zip is not a problem, the problem is sometimes, it needs a full format.

Hello,
I am really a beginner with flashing roms and I just flashed my first CWM and CM 10.1 rom.
But the version I chose has a few bugs, so I want to flash a different CM version. should I do it the same way as I changed from the stock ROM to CM 10.1, by moving it to root path and then via recovery choose install zip from sd card? What I also don't know is what will happen with the GAPPS. I flashed it right away the first CM flashing. but will I need to flash GAPPS again?
Also, If I want to change from non-touch CWM to touch-CWM, I do it via Odin in the same way I first flashed the non-touch CWM? Will that over-write the existing CWM?
Sorry I am really a beginner, but at least I flashed the first rom
Thanks to everyone who helps :good:

Yes, all you said is the correct way. Its that way itself.
To sum it up, if you want to flash a different CM, reboot into CWM recovery, Wipe Data/Cache/Dalvik cache and flash the zip package and flash the gapps and do a wipe data/cache/dalvik cache again. Yes you need to flash GAPPS each time when you install CM.
For changing recovery, if you have another version installable via Odin, then you can go on with it, and it will replace your existing recovery.
Be sure to check this Table to know which GAPPS should be installed for which CM version.
Happy Flashing!
I have Phil Touch 6.0.4.5 CWM installed.
I put this on to try CM11. Didn't like it so re-flashed the the latest official ROM and its been running fine for a while now.
Theres a new official update out I wanted to try but flashing via CWM it says "Installation aborted".
I then tried the older official ROM and this too aborts hower CM11 installs fine.
Any ideas? I am Wiping ROM and clearing Cache.
You cannot flash official updates with custom recovery. You need the stock recovery for it.
A word of caution. The new OTA update most likely has knox. If you plan to try out other custom roms, refrain from flashing. If you are only a stock rom user, flash away.

Thats odd. I could have sworn I reflashed the official rom using CWM.
Thanks for clearing that up.
Can I still enter standard recovery having CWM on there or do I need to reflash via a standard recovery via odin?
You need to flash one using Odin. If you have a flashable recovery zip file, you can replace the recovery image in the zip file with a stock one.

hi, i have a redmi note 4g and i want to update it to the new version (6.6.1.0)
but when i click on update, it reboots and stucks on the twrp screen. what do i do once in the twrp screen? i have wsm tools installed.
Stock update works only with stock recovery. If you want to install MIUI from TWRP you have to install it like any other ROM (download zip to sdcard, boot in TWRP and install manually).
Be aware that you will lose every modification you did in /system partition, including WSM.
Also note that MIUI v7 will soon be available for this device.
This page contains stable and developer versions of MIUI for you to download. They are localized in many languages (not only chinese and english like those directly from Xiaomi), dev versions are updated weekly and already rooted.

Thanks bro..I don't mind losing data. Can you tell me the procedure to install it? I mean wipe dalvik, and?
If you want to upgrade MIUI you don't need to do anything, just install new rom, no wipe necessary. You won't lose your data, only changes you made in /system. If you want to start fresh, there is an option to factory reset, you can do it before install, but again if you come from MIUI and want to install newer MIUI this is not necessary.
Download the zip from the page I gave you, copy it to sdcard, press install button in TWRP, locate the zip and install it, done

Incremental updates are only from one version to the next one (eg 5.8.14 to 5.8.21). Just be sure that you come from the right version. If not, install the full package, the results are the same

Can i install miui 7 stable the same way? I'm coming from 6.6.1.0. Just go to recovery and install from zip?
I was using stock ROM with root i followed the following procedure to install 12.1 nighties but after installing OS keyboard keep on FC's and OS reboots
i am using i9100T version of S2

I'm assuming you have stock unrooted firmware? The easiest way is to install philz kernel from stock(3e) recovery, then reboot to recovery and flash a newer recovery that is capable of flashing the newer versions of android. If you just want to install CM12.1 straight away just back up your efs then:
1. Download the DVLSH kernel .zip from HERE
2. Download the philz 6.48.4 from HERE
3. Reboot into stock recovery, flash the DVLSH kernel(if your firmware build is DVL**, you could probably reboot into system no problem)
4. Reboot to recovery(not system), flash the philz 6.48.4
5. Reboot to recovery(not system), follow the steps for installing in the CM12.1 thread after backing up etc
Keep the DVLSH kernel. Once you install CM, you will have CM recovery, which only allows you to flash signed .zips(which this one is)
EDIT - The philz 6.48.4 is also signed and is probably the more useful one to keep, being compatible with the newer roms

You could try doing a full wipe and installing again. Try installing the rom, reboot to system, then let the system settle for a few minutes, then going back to recovery and install gapps.
Which gapps did you use? I would try the pico gapps from
The alternatives are:
1. You could download the stock rom for your region from sammobile.com or one of the other websites that provide stock roms, then install with odin
2. You could read up on some of the older custom kitkat or jellybean roms that are more stable and try those.

A couple that come to mind are Slimsaber 4.4.4 by Fusionjack and the latest unofficial CM11 by Lanchon
FYI if your priority is stability, it's probably best to steer clear of lollipop roms atm. They all have their issues

All you need to do is
1. Flash either of the philz kernels
2. Turn phone off and reboot to recovery
3. Full wipe, flash slimsaber(and 4.4.x gapps if you want)
4. Reboot to system
You don't need the slim kernel
I was wondering if is possible to install MIUI using TWRP. A new MIUI update came out today. It's the Global BETA ROM and I'm currently using the STABLE Global ROM 8.2.5.0.
Is it possible to install that update (the whole ROM, not just the update) with TWRP? If so, what process should I follow?
And another question. If I install Resurrection Remix ROM (I want to try it to see how is the RAM management and the battery life) and want to go back to MIUI could I just restore the MIUI nandroid backup? Or would be there a problem with that, because I've seen some people saying the can't restore the backup.
Thanks in advance.

Yes it is possible to install recovery ROM through TWRP. But I suggest to flash fastboot ROM if you want to migrate from stable to beta (developer) ROM, and vice versa.

To update the whole ROM, you need to download the full pack version of the recovery ROM, as long as the old ROM and the new ones is at the same type; e.g. global stable over global stable, global beta over global beta, etc. Don't mix on different types otherwise you may get problems later such as bootloop.

As long as you're not modify the partition info (name, type, length, etc) you shouldn't ended with backup restoration failures. Make a full Wipe if you intend to install a new custom ROM through TWRP. Use download only (no formatting) if flashing custom ROM through fastboot/download mode.

Thanks a lot for the responses. If I want to install the GLOBAL Beta release (coming from the Global Stable) through fastboot can I select the option to keep all my data or is it better to do a clean install?

Although you can untick/exclude "data" and "cache" partition images from flashed ROM file, it is highly recommended if you do clean install, since beta and stable may came from different builds. And yes that's mean factory reset— you've lost all settings as well as installed apps, but files stored on internal storage are kept (unless you decide to wipe or format it, which is a rare decision).
