How to reset nook tablet - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Hi guys, I know this is an old device but need some help if there is anyone here who can remember anything about BNTV250A (Barnes and Noble nook tablet 8gb)
I am trying to remove CM11 from my nook tablet and reload the original Barnes and noble software on it. I have a 7 year old niece who I am trying to introduce to reading. And what better way then a nice new (atleast for her) gadget with books.
So basically sometime back I have installed cyanoboot and CM11-SnapshotM12 to this tablet. This is surprisingly still running very well but I would like to remove it and port back to older BN software to get rid of all the games etc and make this a reading tablet.
I did notice that cyanoboot gives you the option to choose a boot order (internal eMMC/SD) but I am hoping to load the BN software to eMMC while probably keeping cyanoboot installed so as to have the option to boot from SD at a later point in time.
Any hep as to how I can do this will be highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

I think that you will need to return the device to stock and then update it from the zip at the B&N website. Presumably you have an SD card that was used to flash the CM11. That's your path back to Cyanoboot, not something left on the device.

recieved 1.1.4 on nt update cant get zipfile for 1.4.0 to work

i followed intructions on how to get 1.4.1 to with sd card to flash back to 1.4.0 but no luck...it just starts as normal, i have done the power on off 8 times a few times redownloaded zip file...no idea....i did call barns and noble and complained they said version 1.4.2 is coming out next week to allow side loading once again, thanks in advance with anyone that can help with this problem
thats interesting. if 1.4.2 comes out and allows sideloading then you should be able to root if you get 1.4.2, unless something changes again. Anxious to find out!
the technical support lady from bn said she has had 100s of calls about this issue, ps thanks for that video on rooting worked awesome, i procrastinated on blocking updates...ill make sure that i do this next time around, really like adw

Are you asking how to install iOS on your Nook Tablet or how to get the Android Market on an iOS device?
waiting for update on 1.4.1 for nt (zipfile that works to put back 1.4.0) but also want to get android on the ipad but there arent any forums that i have found about the ipad2jailbreak with os5.0.1

Chances of getting Android on an iPad2 are just about nil. Completely different (and closed) hardware architecture - I don't see how anyone could get Android on it.
that sucks, i really like android, thanks for information

I've heard of people getting android on jailbroken ios devices, but this would be the wrong place to look for help with that. Ios is closed, but with android being open it is not unlike trying to develop a rom for an android device (like a Nook Tablet, for example).
SD card method fails after 1.4.1
Using the acclaim_update.zip method, after the initial screen it looks like the NT tries to start the factory restore procedure then errors out with this message:
"Please restart your device and try again."
I fear I am borked. Has anyone else seen this version of fail?
I am also unable to get adam's sd method to work. My device is at 1.4.1. i performed a factory reset and the factory reset shows 1.4.1! The method I performed for factory reset was to hold the power and home button repeat and release on the 9th time. It did show the factory reset screen with the yellow progress bar. Reran setup and it still showed 1.4.1. it didn't load 1.4.1 it is already set as the factory software level jnow since I got the update. I cant return this device as I dont have a reciept. So here I sit. i have not seen any updates from Adam.
i am going to try a different Micro SD card
let me know if it works!
This method works I video taped a walk through and I will post it. I installed 1.4.1 and reverted back to 1.4.0 without a hitch. Video soon
Update... by soon i mean like within the next 10 hours... it is a 50 minute video that I have to upload in HD... 4 gigs
No luck with aclaim_update.zip on 16GB PNY sd card
Hi All:
I am using 16 GB class 10 pny micro sdhc card. I was able to root
the system and get some apps sideloaded with rev 1.4.0 of the
software.
Then I got burned by the 1.4.1 update and tried the following methods to get
back to 1.4.0:
1) shut off nook (at 1.4.1) and pull the sd card. Insert card into laptop
copied zip file to root of drive. Put card back in nook tablet powered
on. FAIL system booted normally.
2) Formatted sd card in nook. Shut off nook. loaded zip file as in 1.
Powered on system. FAIL system booted normally.
3) formatted sd card on computer, installed zip file (and tested it) on the
sd card. Put card in nook, powred on. FAIL booted normally.
Then I tried all three after unregistering the nook.
Then I tried all three after hard resetting the nook (factory firmware
reload to 1.4.1).
I also attached the nook to the computer directory and put the zip file
at the root of the internal (MyNook E) drive (similar to the method for
manually installing 1.4.1 given on the barnes and noble site). As of now
it has not loaded.
No joy at all. Can people who have had this work tell me what cards they are
using. Maybe there is something there (maybe I need just a micro sd card and
not a micro sdhc card??)
Thank for any info people can provide. I would post the question to the
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402190 thread, but
I am not allowed to since I am a new user 8-(.

Yup that's the procedure I did (in 3) using a 4096 block size for the card.
I am re-downloading the file now in case the verify I did was lying somehow
and the file wasn't valid. Since it's fat32, what settings for permissions
(read only, archive ...) did you have on the file.

except no magic here. Sigh.
Too bad this "update" effecively killed two POC projects I was doing for work
that would have sold a few more nooks and also helped drive us
to buy our company tech books though B&N when available.

the difference between my situation and yours is I unroot and install patch 1.4.1 on a stock device and then remove it with the sdcard recovery. I wonder if something doesnt work right if it patches over a root? I cant verify this...

The first time I tried steps 1,2 and 3it was on a still rooted nook. So I
had my side loaded apps and could play streaming radio and access the
emergency response guide and ssh to other hosts.
But I also tried step 3 on an unregistered nook before finally
breaking down and doing a complete factory reset (hold down
power and N ...) and using step 3 on it.
So I claim we at this point have the same environment.
I wonder if it could be something with the boot roms? Maybe some roms
look for the zip and some don't? I don't know how to verify that though.
The model number on my nook is BNTV250 and there is an IC number of
8961A-BNTV250A I think. Kind of difficult to read it.

PSA: Nook Tablet 8GB and 1.4.2

Alright, first of all, before you all freak out thinking that we can't root 1.4.2 or even gain access to the 8gb iteration of the nook, Fattire and I have talked and it looks like there is no real changes in uboot meaning that in theory, it can still be broken into with bauwks' uboot.
What does this mean?
Well, until someone creates an image and tests it, we won't know. But don't go assuming that it's unhackable. Also, I'm certainly not going to do it and neither is fattire since we don't want to have to purchase the 8gb nook tablet since it's basically a kindle fire and that's not ok. They should have stuck with the 16gb edition of the nook. Anyway, if you poor saps are willing to just buy the 8gb nook, I say wait until people can verify the image. I however, will not be giving B&N any more money at all.
So, what have we learned?
Don't assume things are unhackable. If they are slightly different, the exact same files won't work. We need to wait for new images for the 8gb version of the nook tablet to be hackable.
1.4.2 is still completely hackable using the sdcard method we have right now to root. It literally will work on every version.
EDIT: DO NOT FLASH 1.4.0 to an 8gb nook tablet. If you do, you're **** out of luck and need to go to B&N. Don't pm me asking for help.
Here were my thoughts, FWIW. It needs a real test tho.

I think the issue is not the locking, but running a bootloader configured to load the kernel & ramdisk into 1GB of RAM, onto a device with only 512MB of RAM.

Yes but if the device wasn't locked, and we could get people to pay attention to the fact that 1.4.2 is just as rootable as 1.4.0 and just as easy we wouldn't have people thinking that 1.4.0 is the only way to root ever. Which would stop them from trying to flash acclaim update to their 8GB devices. Well... at least one can hope.
How's this for a slap in the face... I'm 82% sure that the bootloader on my brand spankin' new 16gb is locked differently. I've tried 4 different root methods and can't get the tablet to boot off of an SD card.

This is just a thought, but it might work. I had a problem getting my NT to boot off of a used sd card. Even after reformatting you would think it would work, but in my case it didn't. I went out and bought a fresh sd card and it worked. It's worth a try, unless, off course, you have already tried a new card.

More like 3, a 16gb and two 4gb.
Have you tried turning the NT off and then turning it on by plugging in the charging cable? With the SD inserted of course.
So it seems they are making some behind the scenes changes to block things?

NT 8Gb + CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.4 - Backup fail
Hi.
how to make Backup in NT 8Gb + CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.4
the process of freezing as a video:

can someone has the correct CWM?

Thanks Indirect,
A CWM Recovery Tool for the 8Gb Nook Tablet would be awesome.
I'm in Australia and stupidly picked the 8Gb version not realising that it's 512Mb of RAM would be such an issue. And being over here I can't swap it.
So far I've:
- Successfully rooted it using jichuan89's great boot image (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529553)
- Installed "NT Hidden Settings" from the Android Marketplace and allowed unverified application installs.
- Tried installing the CWM Recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458630) but received errors when installing ("Unable to install: This application was not able to install onto your device. Please "Archive" and the "Unarchive" the application to try again" for App Installer and "Parse Error: There is a problem parsing the package" for Package Installer.
I'd really love to load CM7 but at the moment my big stumbling block is backing up the stock ROM using CWM.
Cheers

From what I remember if you try to install an app with app installer first it won't work with package installer after that. You might try redownloading and try package installer first.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
Weirdly enough, turning it on an off and re-downloading the "Nook Recovery Flasher.apk" allowed me to install using Package Installer.
Now:
- I installed the CWM Nook Recovery Flasher and ran the install option
- Pressed the reboot button
- Now my 8Gb NT tries to start, shows the brown box for a few second and then the box starts "jumping" or flickering and the device hangs.
So far the only thing I've been able to do to get it working at all is to run CM7 from an SD card (from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826)
Is there any way yet to restore an 8Gb NT? (and yes, now I know that I'm an idiot for getting an 8Gb version but I'm in Australia, so returning it isn't an easy option).
Thanks
Chris

I have just finished rebuilding all of cwm from source. So I think this build has all the changes required for the 8GB versions
The current version is SDcard only but can easily be converted to run internally too.
Please test and give feedback

Would be better if you create a thread in development section for this specific recovery for 8GB NT model, so users go straight to use yours instead of try @indirect app or pushing the old normal recovery with adb tool.

[Q] Installing CM7 on 8gig NT

(First I wanted to say, you guys all rock. I owned a Nook Color for awhile and had cyanogen mod on it and it was absolutely awesome. I do understand the basics of how to install it. I ended up selling my old nook (was low on money) and recently began to miss it, so I picked up a 8gig Nook Tablet running 1.4.2. I tried to figure this out on my own, but after 8 hours of reading threads and not having any luck I decided to finally post a thread asking for help )
Problem:
I have an 8gig Nook Tablet (brand new from the store) running 1.4.2. I would like to install Cyanogen Mod 7 on it since the stock O.S. is ... well... terrible.
To start, can it currently be done with that tablet at all? Should I even attempt to do it or wait until everything is more stable?
I did manage to get it rooted using this guys method. Next, I burnt a 4gig SD card based off Indirect's thread so I could boot CWM from it. I was intending on installing CM7 from this thread. I re-sized the 70 mb partition thing using EASEUS Partition Master, stuck the CM7 files in the directory and set about attempting to set it up
My problem is I can't even get CWM to boot. I power it on, it goes straight to the stock O.S. I hold the N button with power button, and it gives me a prompt for a factory restore (which is nice, better than the 'interrupt boot 8 times b.s.). I plug the cable in, unresponsive to anything until I take the card out
Am I doing something incorrectly, or maybe using the wrong files? If I can't install CM7 for some reason, is there any way to make the stock O.S. function better? I can't view apps without going to search->play store-> finding them, which is a pain.
Thanks so much for any help!

newbie question: how to load android apps on 8GB 1.4.2

I just purchases a Nook Tablet 8 GB with software version 1.4.2 I would like to load the Adobe Reader android app onto it. Since this is all I want to do, I imagine I would only have to root it, right? I have a linux box running adb so I would simply download the .apk and push it onto the rooted Nook, right? Is it this simple? Sorry for the noob question, I have a Droid X so I'm not new to Android, however, I've never worked with the Nook Tablet before.
EDIT:
I did some reading and found this thread... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529553 It looks like it is the only method available currently, right? The video example shows the OP using Go launcher ex as the launcher. The thing is, my wife likes the standard Nook interface so I'm hoping this can be kept. Also, this Nook is registered to my wifes Barnes and Nobel account. Will rooting deregister it? Thanks.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826 load cm7 on an sd card and go that route
edit: lemme explain a bit more.. you get the android system with no changes to your actual device so no warranty issues.. wanna go back to stock nook.. take out SD card and bam back to stock
For stock you will need to root to have access to Google play a.k.a "android market" and for sideload apps once you're rooted you need to download NT hidden settings (download from Google Play)and go to hack settings and hit Unknown Sources after that you will be able to open apps you download in your Nook Tablet or apps you have copied to your sdcard.
~ Veronica
Thanks for the replies. Please excuse my delay in responding. I actually followed jichuan89 post in the link in my OP. It worked very well. It installed the market/google play and I was able to load apps. I kept the stock nook interface since my wife prefers it. The only downside I've noticed is that the apps installed from google play don't show up in the stock apps menu. You have to search for them. It's really no big deal, just thought I'd mention it. Anyway it's working great now.
@ lavero.burgos
I did not download the NT hidden settings that I noticed and I did not see any option for Unknown Sources. Maybe they installed with jichuan89's root method? I will check as soon as I can get the NT back from my wife . Also, I'm concerned about OTA updated from Barnes & Nobel. How can I disable this? Is that in the NT hidden settings somewhere? Thanks.

Opening up the full 16GB for use?

Ok, I am a Kindle Fire guy. I have purchased three of them with two being demo units that I rooted and installed a modified version of the Kindle Fire software with Play Store available (thanks to these forums). I now want to play with a Nook Tablet and am currently bidding on one on eBay. My question is, from my reading the Nook is setup so 15GB is used for Nook Store downloads and only 1GB is available for non Nook Store stuff. If I root it and install a ROM (what is the best one out there by the way) will it free up all 16GB to use for the Play Store or is 15GB still locked for Nook Store?
Before flashing a custom ROM (my favorite is official CM10.1), bring it into B&N, and they can repartition it for you if you ask at the counter. Then flash your ROM, and you're good.
So I can't re-partition it myself? I have to have B&N do it for me?
Follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531120
Sent from my Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet
I just gave you that tip because to repartition, you need ADB drivers on windows, and it's a pain to get it working. I switched to Linux just to flash a custom recovery.
Sent from my Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet using xda app-developers app
If you're fine with the BN repartition scheme giving you 8GB for your own stuff then you can do it yourself by just burning the repart.img to an SD card and run it. Make a search for repart.img. I don't have a link at hand but it's easy enough to find.
Sent from my BNTV600 using Tapatalk 2
Closest B&N is 46 miles away so that would suck having to do that. When I rooted my Kindle Fires did I have to first have ADB drivers installed? It seems like I might have.
Well, as I said in my previous reply, if the BN repartition scheme is fine you can very easily do that yourself. No SDB or anything required. Just the repart.img that you should be able to find without much difficulty.
