How to install stock ROM - Asus ROG Phone Questions & Answers

Hi,
I initially installed update 15.1630.1902.90 to my phone and after that it ruined the perspective control of my ROG while using the mobile desktop dock. I tried installing the previous version via sideload but to no avail.
Can anyone share the step by step on how to install stock ROM to our phone? or downgrade from the previous version of the firmware?
Thank you.

Just place the firmware in the Root Directory of your phone & reboot, this is given that your not rooted & have a locked bootloader.

I tried this but nothing happens. My device is not rooted.
Thank you.

I don't think you can downgrade. I would post this on the support forum:

OTA update to 6.1.A.2.45 for rooted Xperia S with unlocked bootloader

I have a rooted Xperia S with unlocked bootloader, by following instructions on this thread.
Today I received a notification about OTA update to 6.1.A.2.45 (40MB in size) and I was wondering if I can apply this update without loosing root. I really did search for an answer on the forum before making this post and couldn't find anything specific for my phone, but what I did found only confused me more, which is to be expected since I am a noob. Apparently it worked for some users of Xperia Play with unlocked bootloader, but on the other hand some users of Xperia Arc S say that bootloader should be locked when making an OTA update.
I would really appreciate any help from more experienced members, I'm new in Android and don't want to start by bricking my phone.
Thank you for your time and effort.
Boom
better dont, you will end up with a bricked device. NEVER accept OTA updates if your bootloader is unlocked.
Don't update with PCC when you're unlocked.
Wow, that was fast! Thank you guys.
hi, did you find how to update?

i also have an open bootloader although not root, but i tried updating using the phone's OTA and PCC and neither worked. I promptly realized it might just be the open bootloader which is keeping me from updating, so how do we manually update? if you have any procedures will highly appreciate anyone..... thanks in advance

You can find your regions FW. (firmware) and download it, after that download and install flashtool, and flash the .ftf file via flashtool and that is it.
thanks for the quick reply

Im going to engage in a rather noobish conversation but i want to be completely sure before i proceed to install. my phone and my pc companion both find the update which is 6.1.a.2.45, which i assume is the one i need to find on .ftf. after downloading it from wherever i find it i just open the flash tool program and select it to start the installation? and again thank you

i did a fast search and found this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31011440#post31011440
they have some firmwares there, but they seem to be full updates, because they are 300+mb while the update on my phone its only 40mb.
so should i just download the generic and proceed to flash?

Hmmm,
Slightly different scenario here.
I have a rooted xperia S with a locked bootloader and obviously want to preserve root.
Previous experience tells me that a PC update from SEUS does a full wipe of the phone and looses root however OTA updates usually preserve root. I was hoping somebody could clarify if this is still the case?
Thanks
if your bootloaders unlocked you cant update ota or via seus. it will just give an error about your device being modified

same question as you, i have a rogers xperia s with a stock uk rom, it's rooted but bootloader is still locked. Just want to make sure that i don't loose root, or the root method can still be applied after the update.

there is a rom somewhere in another forum i guess which already is updated and rooted. so you might want to just download that one and flash it. it has its own kernel and recovery.

I've not been on much recently at all so I could be wrong, but I'm sure it's been said that you can flash ROM such as the linked one when bootloader is locked and perhaps the pre-rooted one too. May need to search the thread.
Nothing out there that allows me to root my Xperia S on ICS without wiping my data though I think. One can wait... or dream. :[

Yeah having too wipe at this point is a bummer. If I'm going to wipe my phone ill wait for the ability to unlock my locked bootloader.
Problem with that is I will most likely have a new phone by then.

Hi. you got a 6.1.6 rom , gapps and root included at needrom.com ( some chinese crap).
What rom do you have?? is it 8GB or 4GB version? I would really thank you if you have european rom and you can share it.
For deodexing, an easy way is downloading androidtweaker2 from playstore. It´s got a deodexing tool.

Not customs roms as long as I know.
At forum.china-iphone.ru there´s a threat about this phone with a tutorial to install CWM. (didnt try yet, dont know if it works properly).

take care because all roms avaliable are for china version (1/4 GB) and it seems are not totally compatible with 1/8 gb versions ( at least an user reported camera not working after installing w969.6.1.6 to an 1/8 gb bougth in sudafrica, same version than european).

There is no custom roms available at the moment, towelroot works good in rooting your phone. I accidentally wiped my phone and flashed the chinese rom W969.6.1.6 and my main camera is not working anymore, the rom also contained malware (funweather) that was a struggle to delete. My phone was bought in South Africa I havent gone back to the shop to go check what version software the phone is suppose to run, but there is not much available online.
My advice dont go further than rooting your phone. It will be appreciated if you can backup and share your rom.:good:

Hi EGcrasher,
can you tell me the exact steps i have to do to backup my ROM ? I need to use an app or I can do all by connecting the mobile to the computer?
I want a backup of my rom also to be sure to be able to come back at the original status.
I think that to have a perfect backup of my rom i need first to do a factory data reset.
Than what i have to do ???? I'm sorry but i need a basic guide... can I ask also you what you have uninstalled after rooted the phone?
Anyway my phone kernel version is 3.4.0 and the software version is W1002.6.03.00.EU00 and my total space is 6.11 GB
To root i go to website towelroot... and only install the apk and nothing else, right?
Thanks!

Should I update?

Hi guys, first I want to apology if it has already been asked.
I'm running Android 6.0 (32.1.A.1.185) on my E5823. My phone is rooted and have Xposed installed (Hi Niantic)
I can't get rid of the notification for 32.2.A.0.224.
Should I update?
Will I loose root and Xposed? If so, how can I get rid of this annoying update notification?
Thanks a lot
You won't be able to update the official way without getting rid of the mods/root.

Uninstall Xposed framework and then you'll need to flash stock kernel using fastboot which would also remove whatever custom recovery and root you have.

I wouldn't recommend it. Even if you do succeed in updating you could end up with a bricked device or just mess up your firmware and would have to do redo everything. Best is to bring it back to complete stock and then do the update.

Okay, thanks for the reply
I don't really see the problem. Just flash the latest firmware using Flashtool and then root again by using the rootkernel mod in this forum. Xposed and such aren't a problem either.
Hi
Is it possible to use Flashtool with twrp/root/xposed? Btw I think my bootloader is still unlocked.
And what should I use to root? Something like this or this?

If your bootloader is unlocked you should be able to follow both tutorials just fine.
In short:
Flash new firmware using Flashtool
Patch kernel of new firmware and flash it
Flash SuperSU and Xposed using TWRP
Enjoy life
If you need step-for-step help, just send me a PM with your instant messasing contact details. I'll help where needed.
Hi, thanks for the reply, I'll do that when I'll have more free time.

In my case MM 6.0.1 (.224 or .253) solved the battery drain issue during night/sleep, so i would highly recommend it. There is also a discussion regarding this.
as suggested by others, i would not directly OTA upgrade with modded kernel, Supersu and Xposed installed. I would do it with flashtool.
If you want to stick with the current version, simply disable/hide/remove the Software update app (or "hide all notifications from this app".)
I froze it a while ago with Rom Toolbox, but thanks

Flashtool (Emma) only allow me to install 32.0.A.6.200 (there is Customized MY and NOBA, don't know the difference) and 32.1.A.1.163 (only Customized_NOBA)
Why can't I update to a more recent firmware?

Asus ROG Phone | Bootloader unlocked? Rootable? Dev forecast?

Hey all,
Like many of you in the enthusiast category with phones, with all the detrimental lock downs from varies companies, we've been eager to and most likely willing to jump onto that next device that will offer us an unlocked bootloader (US market/variant.)
The big question is if this phone will be bootloader unlocked? It's too early to tell I know, but it'd be good to keep tabs on this. Asus really has a good chance to separate themselves from the rest with this promising device.
If anyone has any info on the forecast of this phones future for customization, please share it here when it becomes available.. I'm sure many would love to hear all about it. We can compile it all here in a dedicated thread
Thanks and keep your fingers crossed!

Would you be able to flash the WW rom on a CN version device?
Or would you need something additional to be able to do so?

You can't flash TWRP without unlocking the bootloader first. Since Asus hasn't released the official unlocking tool yet for our device you would have to unlock it using other methods which isn't advisable to do that is if you are able to find an alternative method at the first place.
Chinese forum regarding Root
in the ROG phone download section there is:
Unlock Device App: Unlock boot loader
I think that's it, what we want
https://www.asus.com/tw/Phone/ROG-Phone/HelpDesk_Download/
Looks like the TW Asus site has an official 'unlock' executable, but whether it works on other regional versions is unknown.

Yes it's already available on the Chinese download section. Personally i will not attempt to unlock yet because i need the warranty service. If you unlock you lose warranty and system update as stated by them. Anyway if any of you want to unlock and flash TWRP here is the link to download the TWRP for each system update make sure to choose your current system version. By the way i bare no responsibility for the TWRP files i simply found the link for the files and i don't know who compiled them.

I don't have the phone yet.
I imported from Taiwan which was the WW version, so i suppose will be unlockable in most countries.
As for root, shakalaca has uploaded TWRP to Mega(the link above) and has a modified version of Magisk which u can download from his custom channel posted in the Asus forum, using Magisk manager.
(sorry im a newbie so can't post full link so used JP 2byte fonts)
The regular Magisk will result in bootloop.
Also unlocking the phone seems to disable the OTA as usual, but also manual update(unless its done differently from the Zenfone 3, where u just place the ZIP in root directory).
Sideload works, and once u have TWRP, it shouldn't be a problem though.

I imported from Taiwan which was the WW version, so i suppose will be unlockable in most countries.
As for root, shakalaca has uploaded TWRP to Mega(the link above) and has a modified version of Magisk which u can download from his custom channel posted in the Asus forum, using Magisk manager.

What steps did you take to make the change, what are the differences?. Are there any disadvantages to the conversion?
One more thing where do you find the stock recovery?. I haven't found it in the stock rom zip file.

I haven't confirmed flashing from install on the ROG phone, since I updated using adb sideload before flashing TWRP.
But there is an option for sideload in TWRP so I assume its possible.

Trying to root a Samsung G7

I'm trying to root a Samsung G7.
Here is some info on it:
Model: SM-G930A
Android Version: 6.0.1
Build#: MMB29M.G930AUCS4APK1
I am new to rooting and messing with phones and stuff so I've been using a lot of YouTube and xda forums to try and figure out how to root this phone.
I've tried all the one click roots from this list, https://www.xda-developers.com/best-one-click-root-2018/
After that, I started looking at tutorials on YouTube that used a computer and USB to root a phone. From there, I learned that Odin is a thing and people use it. So I tried that out, but I couldn't find the right boot.img for my specific model of phone. The thing is, I don't know what a boot.img is or if that's even what I need.
I am currently trying out this tutorial online: https://dottech.org/199442/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-s7-sm-g930a-on-android-6-0-1-marshmallow/
I googled engboot samsung g7 (it was mentioned in the online tutorial I am currently using) and found this xda link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/how-to/engboot-s7-s7-edge-qualcomm-exynos-t3531104
Oh, and I've already setup ADB and figured out how to get into downloading mode and recovery mode.
That's where I am on my journey to rooting my Samsung G7.
I'm in need of much assistance though.

Okay, I googled how to install TWRP on samsung g7 and apparently I can't install it on versions of the g7 that are Snapdragon.
Only Exynos. The phone I am trying to root is Snapdragon. What should I do now?

I have not figured out how to update the phone.
When you say update, do you mean the Android version or the model (ex. SM-G930A)
Also, the link you sent me, is that a link to change your phones version or root the phone?
I downloaded all the files it asked me to, but in the rooting instructions it wants me to flash a .tar file that I didn't get from the downloads it linked.

Yes, I unzipped all of them but could not find the file it was speaking of.
But my phone is running on marshmallow so I'll stop using that method.
