Battery life Snapdragon vs Exynos - Samsung Galaxy S10 Guides, News, & Discussion

I really wonder why there is no direct comparison yet between the Snapdragon and the Exynos according to battery life. For me personally it is the most important information to make my decision to get the Hong Kong SD855 or international Exynos version. My expectation was to get some direct comparison with the same benchmark even before release. Now it is already five days after release and there are still no battery benchmark results to get an idea how big the difference is between the two versions.
Is Samsung threatening the review sites? Is the gap that huge that they try to hide it?

My 2 cents - it's a massive difference, at the moment.
There's lots of discussion about it on this forum and on reddit with many people (myself included) noticing on average, exynos is underprforming (3-4 hours SOT) over a day vs snapdragon (7-8 hours SOT) over a day (eg 14-24 hours off charge)
'android system' and 'android os' appear in the top 3-4 processes in the battery stats page for exynos users but not snapdragon users. This seems to be a common trend.. A few people think its a bug in the software with the exynos SoC and can be patched by Samsung, although this is all speculation.
But then you get the odd exynos user posting 8+hours SOT over a 14-24 hour off charge period - so who knows. 3.5 to 4 hours SOT is my absolute Max

It's strange, I have the S10 exynos, the battery does last a full day, but screen on time is 4 hours tops. I installed Adhell 3 and it got worse, got rid of it and it's back to how it was in the beginning. I'm baffled at how some with the Exynos have 6+ hours of SOT.

I have regular Exynos S10 and getting 6hr sot on wifi easily. With 4G LTE it's a lot worse. No numbers yet because I'm mostly on wifi.

I'm one of the few who get 8 plus sot with exynos. All day inside yesterday on wifi I was left with 35% with 6 hours and 45 minutes sot! Accubattery telling me 7% of that was lost when screen was off! That's incredible! So around 10 hours with WiFi and 7 to 8 with 4g!? I'm surprised
Optimized battery mode
Adaptive battery enabled
95% of apps commanded to sleep straight away once they're not used
Dark nose on
It ain't the smoothest experience though, frame drops here and there is feels like. It gets quite warm too!
I got Hong Kong snapdragon coming, I'll compare the 2. But right now, I must have a very good exynos chip!

Exynos version here and i confirm that sot is 4-5 hrs max

Exynos S10
Here are my first 3 days with the Exynos S10. Keep in mind that these are all school days (and there are literally no classes because it's almost summer) so I was mainly on 4G the whole time. Adaptive battery on, optimized, WQHD. Day 3 was where there was no more adapting to device usage habits notification on the battery page. Early thoughts - a bit disappointed even though my results were a bit above average compared to other Exynos posts. Honestly on the second day I was only at school for about 7 hours with mostly data on and some netflix (downloaded), lots of spotify. Galaxy Buds were in full effect. I'd say 60% of the time I use my phone I have them on. I think I got home at 1 with about 40% left. Day 3 I left school at about 11:30 ish and had about 60% left I think. Went on a few errands in the sun so it was on max brightness, data on. I think the battery is pretty fine but data eats a lot of battery. A lot.
Day 1 (WQHD)
5 hours 30 minutes SoT
Day 2 (WQHD)
Unplugged 4:26 AM - 100%
plugged 4:22 PM - 4%

Arrived at school at approximately 6:30 - 77%
1 hour 30 mins SoT
plugged 3:03 PM - 3%
6 hours 17 mins SoT
I'd love to hear your thoughts on what I experienced. I also kind of consciously preserved my battery throughout day 2 and 3 because I noticed that it won't last a whole day if I continued my usage habits.

getting 6-7 hours on wifi with my s10e
good enough for me

Galaxy s10 exynos, day 3, on wifi most of the day, and a bit of spotify and chrome.
Bring on a software update Samsung, exynos needs optimising!

I have both the exynos and the US SD855 S10 unlocked versions.
I've been running them for around 4 days.
The 2 differences in performance I've noticed, is the SD855 version seems to have slightly better idle drain compared to the Exynos version.
I've also noticed when playing Asphalt 9, the Exynos one, does occasionally drop frames (Not really noticeable, unless you look for it though).

Too close to call...

Yes to be honest, but only my opinion .
The main one for me, is idle drain. There ain't much in it though.

5hrs SOT with 40% remaining, that's not bad at all....
S10+, Exynos.....:good:

Exynos is absolutely horrible on idle. If you're actually on the phone, it'll last a while. But if it's left to idle it drains horribly. It's so bad that I can't get through a day unless I turn things like AOD off, brightness down, less YouTube, etc. I purchased the Exynos variant hoping that there'd be root and what not, but it's not even worth waiting for. I'm back on my 6T, enjoying a phone that can actually last me an entire day. The Snapdragon may be better on battery life, but I fear for no updates.

Cant say my Exynos version has horrible idle drain.

I get less than 3 hours! 3 + if I'm lucky have everything disabled

Exy model?

And exynos doesn't suffer from idle drain..
These are my typical s10 stats.

What's your average battery life?

I've found it harder than I thought to try and compile battery statistics...however, that being said, what kind of times are you guys able to get, say with average levels of use?
I think the most relevant stat is the one for screen on time, the screen seems to be the biggest killer of battery.
In my most recent use, Better Battery Stats tells me that I've been on the battery for approximately 1 day and 12 hours, and that only 5 of those hours have been for the screen on. I'm now down to 15% battery, so in general, I think that 5-7 hours of screen-on time (with the lowest brightness) is what I usually manage.
How.about the rest of you guys?
how do you work out how many hours the screen has been on?
i mostly use my flyer as an ereader during the week...i get about 4 days usage from 100% to 20%, and have airplane mode on mostly

I use a very useful app called Battery Monitor Widget. I highly reccomend it. Its able to split my usage between awake time, screen on time, wifi on time, and Bluetooth on time.
That sounds about right for me as well, 5-7 hours of active usage. Obviously depends on what you're doing, but I use it extensively and struggle to get more than 7 or less than 5.

Yes. So from our two experiences, 5-7 with screen-on time is somewhat standard. This is why I'm somewhat bemused when people say they've been using the battery for a week! I'm left wondering...were they using less than an hour of screen-on time each day?
If 5-7 hours of screen-on is the average, then my definition of light-to-moderate usage is when I can stretch that out to two days before recharging. Keep in mind that my 5-7 stat is with screen brightness on the lowest setting, and with Juice Defender.
battery depends on use. I have had it last 48 hours with 6 hours screen time and I have had it go in 16 hours with 3 hours screen time. With all the diferent variations of this device, as well as custom roms/kernels and GB vs HC I am not certain there can be an expected battery life span

Yes, I think 5-7 of screen-on time is about standard.
I ran my test and used my Flyer (wifi only) mostly for light work. It lasted 11 days. I mostly used it for notes, quickly checked website couple of times a day and read emails. I have played a game once for 20 minutes and another 20-30min were spent on Plex and Google Music. Screen was on for 4h13m. Wifi on for 16H.
Here is what I figured from that test:
Runtime: 10D 20H = 260H
Idle: 43%. I didn't check how many hours it said it was on idle. But let's say 250H. 43%/250H= 0.172% per hour (standby). That's 4.128% per day. That's very consistent with my observation. So, if you run Flyer for 10 days, you will spend 41% just to have it on standby. It will die in about 24 days, even if you didn't use it at all.
Screen-on (Auto brightness): 4h 13m = 4.22H. In 260H it ate 40% battery. 40%/4.22H = 9.479% per hour. So in theory (haven't tested this), you can get around 9-10 hours reading books(?).
Watching movie also puts load on the cpu and power goes to deliver sound, so I would say you will be using around 12-15% per hour. Probably around 20% per hour while streaming. A lot depends on sound level and video material. Also choice on the player and codecs used might make a bit of a difference.
I get about 4 hours of video or 7-8 hours of internet browsing / kindle reading.

agree with mcord,
it would be better instead of comparing randomly to mention :
Device Type : Flyer WiFi, Flyer 3G or Evo View
ROM : custom/ stock ROM + Kernel Info + CPUSet
Customization : or tweak or additional widget (Juice Defender, Better Battery Safer)
then the usage of application and hours spent, something like this.

Device : Flyer 3G + Wifi (wasn't brand new, so i cannot figure out the previous owner flyer usage)
ROM : LeeDroid 4.1.0 HC + Kernel 2.2.0 + SetCPU scaling on smartassV2
Costum : using HC Launcher with out any additional Widgets and no additional Android apps for preserving battery
Runtime:
Screen On - Lowest Brightness + WIFI and 3G always on : 3 hours with 55 % left, mainly using on e-reader, taking notes, market access.(no multimedia usage)
I had around over 7 hours after i switch to the airplane mode in the last 7% battery left, with similar usage.
Hope this helps for utilize the battery lifespan.
I have a brand new Flyer 3G and I get about 4 hours of mixed use out of it (Airplanemode with wifi enabled, lowest brightness, 70% browsing, 30% video). I'm running stock HC 3.55.405.1 with root. No OC or custom kernel. Do I have a faulty battery? Seem like most of you get better battery life. 70% of the battery is used by the display according to battery stats. Is this normal?

If you are using it for 4-5 hours straight, then yeah that is probably normal. You might also need your battery calibrated if that is your first time. It learns and configures itself a few times after you charge it.

If people are reporting 5-7 hours display on time, and you're getting 4 hours with 30% video, then no, I wouldn't say that that's unusual.
This is tragic. Such a great tab with such a big flaw. The iPad 2 has a 7000mAh battery and the screen area is twice as big, not to mention a much more powerful soc, and you get about ten hours use no matter what you're using it for.
Gotta be a bit more fair in your comparison. That was like comparing a house cat to a bobcat.
In all 7" tablets (including non-androids), I feel that right now the contender is the the express/flyer is the only one that reigns on top for the past year, and can't be beat for only ~$250 in today's market. The only thing the A100's have going for it are the AOSP experience, the Xoom is a direct competitor.
But if you want to compare battery life, the tf101 and prime as well as A5/A6's got this beat by a mile. Not to mention higher resolutions. Point is, these are arguments extraneous of a 7"incher tab.

Yeah, I guess I was a bit unfair. I'm just a bit disappointed.. Expected a little more juice from the battery. Anyway, for 2500NOK(about 450$) it's not a bad deal. Btw the pen is included in Norway(and other European countries, I think). And the pen is the reason I got the flyer. It's almost as good as using a Wacom board for drawing. I just hope HTC doesn't abandon the flyer or have done so already. It would be nice with ICS.

I knew I forgot something!
Rooted View, Gingerbread, GoLauncherEX. I disable the cell radio on each boot.
-About 33% screen brightness
-WiFi on
-Sync on
-Cell radio off
-Bluetooth off
-Location off
My View gets unplugged from the charger each morning, rides ~12 miles to work through non-WiFi country, sits on my desk at work and gets used maybe 60 min total at work, then goes home with me and gets occasional to moderate use browsing and reading mostly. By the time I go to bed and plug it in around midnight I am usually at about 20% battery. Less if I've been gaming a lot or watching video.
So all together my View is on battery for about 16 hours a day but only used 3 or 4.
I went on an overnight trip a few weeks ago and by turning WiFi off when I was on the road the View maintained battery life well.

Battery life and usage

well every time a new phone comes out, early reviews are mixed with some having terrific batter while others are having a dreadful one. Theres only one way to have a scientific approach to measure a battery life, and it is to use a standardized test on the phone with most commonly used settings on and others off and no applications installed etc. Since that is hard to do lets just use a poll.. Whats your uptime, SOT and some major setttings...like below
UPTIME: 24hours
SOT: 6H15mn
Connectivity: LTE
Settings: Auto brightness, gmail sync
also put up screenshots of the battery tab so we can see the usage, not just people just starring at a black screen
thanks for voting guys but its also crucial that you post the infos as described that way we can help fellow members with bad battery life
Can't upload photo for some reason.

This can't be accurate; the GSM signal power and quality differs for every user and it's an important factor to consider. If I use my phone in two different locations in my city I'll have different results.

Yes there are many factors that impact the battery life unless we all run the same battery benchmark on airplane mode with default configuration and no apps installed, battery life is not comparable but it's just to get an average
The new chip is just bad. This won't get fixed.
You can try to use a custom battery savings mode and just enable the CPU limiter, it'll cap performance to the S8 but battery will be quite a lot better.
I can get a day or more but its no match for the Mate 10 Pro I had before
Sorry but won't post any screenshot as I have to put in charge everyday around 3 pm, unplugged at 7 am, to make sure battery will last til the end of the day =(
My previous 3 phones were S8+, Note 8 and Iphone X, all I can say is that S9+ battery life is much worse compared to the 3 of them.
Expecting an update to fix that, if it doesn't come in the next 10 days I'll return my handset.

You realise leaving it charging over night knackers the battery because it keeps trying to top up which over time puts a lot of extra wear and tear on it

I am also in the bad battery camp... I can get about 2-3 hours of SOT before it just craps out and I just spent 800$ on this thing. I'm ready to return it myself.
I'm on exynos and really enjoying my battery life. Anywhere between 5.5 - 7.5hrs sot depending on how I use the phone.

Standby time is amazing, too. 9 hours overnight used only 5%.
The battery life for this phone is good. The standby battery life is not great. I don't get a good signal at my job, so when I get in I cut off my data. With the data off, the phone is still draining battery.
However, if I'm in a good signal area or on Wi-Fi, I can get 6-7hours sot.

Just have a look at the below videos. Unfortunately, that's how the batterylife & performance of the Exynos version is, just like mine. Unless you tweak it with so many tweaks and workarounds(search the forum, there are many tweaks if you like to consider) like many others here, there isn't much hope unless Samsung seriously considers resolving this which is unlikely.
Yes it is correct the battery life on this s9plus is pathetic,
Even on my phone the android system is taking major amount of battery ,
I tried factory resetting my phone a few times but no luck .

Your Android System is particularly high at 21% compared to your SOT.
Noticed that you're on 3G, it consumes battery a lot more compared to 4G.

Your Android System is particularly high at 21% compared to your SOT.
Noticed that you're on 3G, it consumes battery a lot more compared to 4G.
How's the mobile coverage at your area?

I thought LTE consumed more battery than 3G... The reason was a problem with the network. Fixed now so I'm back on 4G. Lets see if it makes a difference
Well love the phone but the battery is the worst I've seen so far for the price u pay. People focus o SOT time but I do the same as on my old iPhone 7 plus but with the iPhone would last from awake to bed time with one charge S9 plus 2 times at least and with though about running out all the time. Shame brilliant phone.
I'm having great battery life on my Exynos 9+. See the attached screenshot.
Only disabled Bixby and AOD.
I use Facebook, Messenger, Snapchat, WhatsApp, GPS high accuracy and sync one Gmail and one IMAP.
For testing purpose I decided to run the whole day with medium battery saver activated, but modified to only restrict the CPU and lower the brightness a bit. That means still running max. resolution and syncing in the background.
Right now the phone still has 36% battery left with:
- 18 hours 33 minutes since unplugged
- 6 hour 30 minutes SOT (That is potentially 10 hours SOT with 24 hours since unplugged!)
- 10 minutes phone call.
Besides my regular usage pattern, I've also played a game a lot on this charge.
No complaints here yet, im getting 5hrs SOT and have only done a few charge cycles so i expect that to improve.
Im getting close to what i do on my pixel 2 xl so in my eyes thats impressive
sent from my Exynos S9 plus, Pixel 2 XL or Note FE
I had an Exynos S8+, and battery life on that was pretty bad, with Android System also taking up more juice than the Screen. Now I'm on a Snapdragon S9+, and dare I say battery life has almost doubled. Android System battery usage is way below Screen battery usage.
Two steps which fixed the battery drain for me :
1. Changing the Location Settings from "High Accuracy" to "Battery Saving" {You can find this in Settings -> Connections -> Location}
2. Using 2.4Ghz WiFi instead of 5Ghz WiFi channel. My Router is a Dual Band Router and somehow when I connect to the 5Ghz Channel, the battery drain is almost doubled. Sticking to the 2.4Ghz Channel improves the standby time by quite a lot.
Hope this helps.

Where can I find the ability to switch this Wifi frequency to 2.4 GHz? thx?
The culprit is most prolly Google Play Services.

It's router specific. It only matters if you have a DualBand Router and you opted to connect to the 5Ghz Band.

battery life

The S9+ battery life is insane, 1% over night, 8 hours
Best battery life of any phone I've owned, for sure.
Are you on SD or Exynos?

No chance on exynos that low mate, I'm shure

Yes... The stand by time is really good on this phone... I had the phone off the charger for 8 hours and barely used it all day ( busy day at work ) and I was still at 89 Percent at the end of the day... It definitely takes a few cycles still you notice major major changes .
I have exinos and never had a worse phone regarding battery life and heating. I tried all possible solutions for increasong battery life but still I get only 3-4 hours of SOT with a total of about just 15 hours!!!
What iritates me the most is that I do not have mjch apps and all is set to sleep and everything possible but the phone still randomly gets super hot even when nothing is runing, which then drains the battery too.
The drain overnight is also bad, it is draining 1-2% per hour.
Poor battery life . Same result even after carrier sent a replacement.
cant believe that i have s9 plus exynos and battery life is really not good for me.
Battery vs Movie
Whenever I try to watch movie on my mobile. Then It takes only 30 minutes to empty battery. I don't know why this is happening to me. I spent a lot of money to buy this ****ty phone. :crying:
From iPhone 6 Plus to S9+ (battery worst?)
i have finished to migrate from iPhone 6 plus to S9 Plus (SnapDragon) but until now (only 1 day) the battery seems to be worst. i will wait for more days and search what i should to change to make the battery have a longer life. What turn off; what consumes more battery and so on.

iPhone's plus versions are better in total battery life. Used a iphone 7 plus for a year & seeing th difference. Refrain from doing anything on th SnapDragon. It would sattle itself.

Screen on time

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Firs day note 10+ exynos.

This was my first day after battery learning usage patterns went away. This was actually like day 4 or 5 of owning the phone.
Not bad I'd say...
Here's a screenshot of my screen on time. I used to phone pretty happy today but this is my best so far. Yesterday the phone died at around nine and a half hours fuse lately I've been loving the consistency of the battery life on this phone. It's similar to the s10 plus in the fact that the more you use it the longer it lasts. Thankfully I've had zero issues with battery drain to my knowledge.
this is on a day off with all the Bluetooth tracking nonsense turned off,
Location on during the use of one specific app for about an hour and a bit,
Optimized setting on battery,
Sync on for Gmail, ig, etc
Wi-Fi turned on all day,
no always on display,
no adaptive brightness,
What are your thoughts if anyone has questions please let me know?
(Edit phone is at 1 percent with 10h and 12min)

Watching YouTube for over 5 hours would give most phones a high screen on time.

Here's a list
Sad
Terrible
Note 10+, adaptive brightness, dark mode, medium power saving mode on
Great reception and signal. Weak results.
Maybe a rogue app you got there. Check for any app crashes.
I'm not getting good battery life...
With brightness below 50%, max resolution, always on display... I have the exynos version.

Me too... battery sucks on my exynos, brightness 35%
Why??? 5h without game or video
Haven't really formally tested all the way to zero, but today at 80% I had about 2 hours of screen time. Now I'm at 63% with nearly 3 hours of screen time. So I'm thinking 6-7 hours of screen time with my daily usage, which is excellent for me.
Performance mode on, FYI. Brightness usually 50%+.
