Which one should i get? They're roughly the same price in my country. I need a phone for at least 2-3years.
Well depends what you want from your phone.
I see a lot of advantages on the OP6.
The SD845 overall performance seems to be better than the Kirin 970, you have the option of 255GB for internal storage, besides the software is less intrusive style wise but also functionality wise.
But, the Mate has better cameras, it's a Android Enterprise Recommended phone, that means that you will get at least one security patch every 90 days for 2 years at least and at least 1 major OS update.
Other hardware features are better water protection and USB 3.0.
That said OnePlus track record of updating isn't that bad, but there's no promises from their side.
And last but not least, if you have any desire to do stuff with custom roms, rooting, etc... You'll wanna go OnePlus.
oneplus updating is spectacular.
I have the 3T and The 5T and both are still updated at least twice a month.
If battery life is the main concern, then the Mate 10 Pro may well be the better bet. I can get consistent 6+ hours of Screen on Time and mostly a full day of hard usage. It's about the only thing keeping me from staying with my M10P though. I got a deal that means I will pay significantly less for it than an upfront OP6 too. It may well be that the Mate 10 Pro will drop further as we get towards the Mate 20 launch in October.
The camera is good, but tends to over do the processing when in auto mode. It does have one of the best Pro modes though if you like to fiddle.
If you do get a Mate 10 Pro, make sure its a C432 model or one of the ones that are regularly updated - my C782 model is still on March 1st security update and I have no confidence that will improve once the Mate 20 is out.
If you have any interest in custom ROMS after that 2 years when you still have perfectly functioning hardware, then OnePlus is almost certainly the way to go - it seems to be one of the few flagships left that has a very active ROM development and Huawei have now shot down any claim to interest in that by withdrawing bootloader unlock.
I 'upgraded' from a OnePlus One running an 8.1 custom ROM that had worked perfectly except for the poor battery life - until it fell in the toilet! (Actually a replacement speaker later and it's still working fine and on a later version of Android that my M10P). There will certainly be options to run the latest software on a OnePlus 6 in 3 years, whereas you will likely be out of luck with the Mate 10 Pro. The camera sucked on the OPO, but I gather it is at least acceptable on the OP6
Software may not be a key concern - actually I can live with EMUI and it has some nice extra 'assistance' touches, but it also has flaky bluetooth in my experience and the over eager power management drives me crazy trying to use things like Tasker.
tl;dr - If you need the battery, go with Mate 10 Pro - if you don't care about the best camera possible, or ever want to go the custom rom route, go with OP6.
One plus 6 hands down, save your self the head ache of Huawei
340 $ for Mate 10 Pro

For a price difference like that Mate 10 pro
didnt use OPO but did use xiaomi mi note 2 phone and now bought mate 10 pro, I also didnt know and have second thoughts about buying OPO 6 or M10pro. so at the end bought M10pro and so far can say the phone is ok but considering rooting installing TWRP and custom roms seems to be little complicated because, after reading xda, bunch of people have bricked they device. now I like to have rooted phone and installed custom rom, lineage os or Aosp extended, but that is not gona happen on this phone so if you like to have rooted phone and have custom roms buy OPO6 definitely, its not everyting in camera. PS emui is quite lagy some times and still needs improvement.
if it matters... the op5t has bluetooth issues with fitbit, not sure if op6 changed but likely issues remain
not sure if fitbit would make a difference, but who knows what other devices may or may not work well. op5t also has issues with car bluetooth, mate10 has none of the issues with the two devices.

usb3.1 iirc
I also bought the mate10pro, big mistake! It was on a pre 8.0.0.146 version with magisk and twrp running fine. Installed xposed, got a bootloop, did a erecovery rescue to factory emui 8, after that applied the latest ota to emui 9 which was the worst thing to do. Got the new bootloader and because the original was unlocked the phone bricked. Back to erecovery and no rescue... tried everything but no luck, so now it's worthless. It may have a very niche leica camera but that won't do any good if you can't recovery the phone. Huawei sucks in every way, just look at how they killed any development other than their own.
So now I ordered the OP 6 which has a very shiny development community, I won't have any worries about being stuck with another paperweight, and if I want a good camera I'll pickup my nikon fullframe dslr, no phone beats that.
I wouldnt go with Huawei if you rely on mods. No real custom rom beside openkirin. No real custom kernel. V4A not working, Dolby Atmos works only on oreo based custom roms. You dont get unlock code from Huawei anymore. You can grab your unlock code via paid services. Alone, when the partition oeminfo gets damaged and your bootloader is locked, your unlock code will not work, erecovery will not work etc DC could fix such bricks but now after the .b145 c432 firmware, they patched it. After B146 you cant downgrade. No real/outdated kernel sources. I recommend this device only for normal conusmers, who dont intend to root this phone. I left Samsung because of adding the knox warranty void string, now leaving Huawei because of the reason I told above.
Oneplus phones have very high SAR values... Be careful
Mate 10 (non-pro) would really last you 2-3yrs because amoled burn (it really is an issue) wouldn't affect you.
I have a mate 10 (non pro) I am trying to sell. Mint condition with the fancy smart flip case. I have a note 9 now so don't need it. Currently has an armorsuit clear skin on it.

Some years later, a reply. YES, I went to OP6 (I still have it working) and later to OP7pro (also still working) and now I'm on OP8 with AICP17.1 (android 12) fully loaded, rooted all working perfectly. Never regretted the change to OnePlus, excellent value for money and excellent support community, very recommendable for custom roms etc. If ever you brick it (happend a few times to me) you get your MSMtool out and bring it back to life in no time.
btw, my mate10pro was still within guarantee, so I sent it back to the seller, took a few months because they tried to recover it, didn't work and I got a full refund.
I need to buy a phone soon. Wife cracked her screen and I will be giving her my mate 9 that I've been pretty happy with.
So I'm looking to buy either a mate 10 pro which is $470 on Amazon or the new OP6T. I've tried both of them out and the 6T is looking very sexy and modern but I reckon that feeling will wear off in a few days. I feel like the 10 pro may have better battery and camera.
Which bring me to my criteria. I need dual sim, good battery and camera and I don't root etc and don't have a problem with Emui.
Thoughts?
Mate 10 Pro have a better camera and better battery.
OP6T looks very good ..
In my opinion (I rooting all my phones).. I don't buy Huawei phone because has removed the community due to blocking access to the bootloader
OP 6T if you don't mind the battery. There's the Google Camera port for the OP 6T plus it supports 4K EIS for video recording. Also the 845 is better than the kirin 970
Well the 6T has an iffy fingerprint reader, the camera sucks (and it's not just the software) and just installing a port of the Google camera doesn't fix that. As far as the CPU goes, that's kind of subjective, the Kirin 970 is a very capable processor. The Kirin 970 has their advanced modem and will give you very good LTE speeds (I'm getting between 45 to 90mbps versus 18 to 24mbps with my mate 9) For a dual SIM phone I would really go with the mate 10 pro BLA-L29 international model, just remember that if you're in the US it won't have any warranty
I like the normal mate 10 over the mate 10 pro. Has headphone jack and front finger print sensor that acts as the 3 buttons too
Granted I don't have a pro version to compare against except on paper specs...
Appreciate the answers. The more I want to get the OP6T the more the 10 pro is looking better. Did the 10 pro dual sim version get the P20 pro night mode? If it did is it as good?
stay away from huawei after closed unlock bootloader service, and also there's no supporting for it,, and if you insist on mate 10 pro stay with Chinese version they have all support for OTA update.
OnePlus 6T is better with SD845 you'll have a lot of supporting from Developers, rom's, kernels, tweaks,, a lots of things.
i bought mate 10, 128G and 6Gb ram and i hate it after fkng huawei closed unlock service.

Why do you assume everyone cares if the bootloader is locked?
IMO the mate 10 pro has better battery life, better camera, and is waterproof (plus I actually like EMUI and its features)
I have the mate 10 pro, battery is very good, but the most you get with pro mode and playing around with many settings... It's not the easy quick perfect picture camera. It has received many updates and it's camera is very capable (night mode of course is not as good as p20pro, it's got different sensors)
The op6t camera is very good. Some people here said it's trash but they are talking Bs. Just take a look for yourself and Google samples from op6 or 6t users. It's a great camera.
But I would go with the op6t any day. The kirin 970 is good on paper and benchmarks but it overheats very fast, I cannot play pubg on lowest settings after 10min it thermothrottles and fps drop. The op6t just has the newer gen CPU which will be important going forward if you are going to keep the phone for 3+ years.
The op6t battery is very similar in size I don't think the difference should be too big to be a deciding factor. Both have fast face unlock though the fingerprint reader ist different. Decide what you like better.
All in all I think op6t is the more up to date phone which will also receive more updates and has better hardware for the upcoming 3years of use. The m10pro is more like the old, strong buddy that can still keep up. But the question is for how long.
I've been using the mate 10 Pro for nearly a year. Mine is running June security update and no software update for 5 months.
I'm selling my mate 10 Pro and buying the OnePlus 6t this week.
I've had enough of Huawei lack of support and updates.
I wouldn't buy Huawei again.
I've been using a regular mate 10 for a year and mine stays up to date. I don't use anything special, the updates just come over the air. It seems some people don't get updates but both my mate 9 and 10 keep getting updates.
What update you are looking for? Mate 10 Pro has all security patches. If you are talking about Android 8.1 it is not that major update and maybe that is why only China models received it. The next Major Android 9 will soon be available and that's what matters.
UK version C782 are still on June security patch and 132. We are 6 months behind with bug fixing updates improvements and most important security! We have been left behind in the UK and that is why we are all jumping ship
10 pro. I already had oneplus devices, and didn't like them as much as I did with the Huawei ones. Imo, the build quality is far better. It's on par with Apple. The camera is fantastic. The battery is a major goal. At first, I was having problems to get use with EMUI, in the end I passed to like it. It's not as good as oxygen os, but it's have been improving. So, I'll keep my 10 pro for more 6 months or a year.

Hu, something's wrong with your device. I play PUBG on higher setting everyday with coworkers at lunch, and I can play at least 30 minutes (since pause are not longer than that) consuming only 13% battery (not from 100%) and getting a 30-35°C that is not so hot, comparing to iPhone 8S that drain twice as much and can be barely kept in hand for the same lenght of time. Maybe some phone are better, but well, mate 10 pro is really good a handling games. My nintendo switch got hotter than that...
That said, I do not like the overhsarpening/oil-ing effect of the camera, so, even mid-tier camera are better for me, I would not go for the mate 10 for the camera.

I'm not, albeit I've rebranded to c432. I had an OP3 and came to Huawei primarily for the battery life, and here the Mate 10 pro still has nearly 10% bigger battery.

as you like,, and you already like it!! and it's just opinion :good: no one force you to not buying it,, for me i like that things like unlocked bootloader and root and play in system and change rom's etc,, and i wish to replace my mate 10 with OnePlust 6t,, or other brand.

Anything but Huawei. With a custom ROM things are okay, but relying on Huawei to update? Yes, they currently still treat this device as a flagship. But my other phone, a P10 Plus already lagging behind. Luckily I do have the bootloader unlocked on that device, so that's a relief.
If I had to do a comparison, Huawei updates are like Samsung. Be glad if you ever get them. Is OnePlus that great? Nope. Fingerprint sucks, camera sucks, battery sucks, warranty is the worst out of any manufacturer.
What to buy? Great question!
Been struggling with the same problem. There is just no choice on the market without compromise. Huawei had it all with the large battery, best of the best inside, but they decided to flip off customers and disallow the bootloader unlock.
Rip. I would probably buy a OnePlus 5T, Poco F1 (has no NFC and some screens have touch issues).
It's nearly Christmas and I'm looking for a gift for my mum. For the past 4 years she's been using a Samsung Galaxy s3 and has been reluctant to upgrade, though at this point it's become so temperamental that Santa's gonna put his foot down and get her a new phone
I love my pocophone, she loves the photos I take with it and I've got a chunk of cash burning a hole in my pocket. I've seen the 128 gb version new for €240 which seems a no brainer
MIUI is no harder to use than the antiquated junk on her s3 and she'll love the 2 day battery life
My question to you good people is:
I haven't been watching the other phones on the market. Is there anything that competes seriously in the same price range? I'd rather not get her anything second hand as Santa still doesn't recycle, surprisingly enough
Thanks for any suggestions
I was hoping for the note 10 / cc9 pro but I'd say other than the camera it is worse and costs 450€, like wtf. The only thing which the poco is lacking in my opinion is nfc. If she is not going to use it she'll be perfectly fine with the phone. Ah and ghost touches. Lets hope that there are no fts panels around anymore or whatever the reason for that is.
I would say the Poco F1 might be overkill. Go checkout the Redmi Note 7 or Redmi Note 8 plenty fast and also very good camera. Might be a bit cheaper and will work just as good.

If she has an S3 now she will be over the moon with the Redmi Note 7 or 8 camera, my colleague was really happy with the pictures. A serious advantage over the S3 in darker wintertime etc. Also the speed of the camera is a lot faster. You can also install Gcam on them without rooting or modding them which is also great if you want to get her into photography.
When it comes down to battery life, yup, both phones are really amazing.
I also own a Redmi Note 5 pro and to be honest and fair, the processor in the Poco F1 is overkill for what I do. The Redmi Note 5 already handles everything more than fast enough without any waiting. Click and it's there, no frustration or lag. The 7 and 8 even have faster cpu's so no worries on that front.
Just some advice if you buy for your mother (my mother has a Redmi Note 5 pro also, guess how that happened ). What I did was order a glass screen protector and some cases. I guess for 20 euro on Aliexpress you are more than settled. Giving her the phone is really nice but giving it completely protected and usable is a must and she will really like that.
Redmi Note 8 pro or Mi 9 lite
I followed the above recommendations and bought a Redmi note 8
It arrived this week
It's great! She's gonna love it!
(Unfortunately I got it from an AliExpress seller meaning I was hit for another chunk of vat - should have bought it from eglobalcentral where I got my f1; they ship from within the eu)
Thanks for the advice peeps!
Interesting to note the feel of it - felt at least as well put together as my pocophone. Obviously a tiny bit of lag noticeable here and there, but it was minimal - though I saved it the burden of trying PUBG on it!
fones €240
Realme note 5 pro
Nokia 6.x
Mi8
xiaomi A3 (but ram is only 4gb , however xiaomi Cc9e chinese version has 6gb, camera result is not so good)
y7 (amazing camera)
and ofcourse
Galaxy M30 ! (or if you can go €300) (m30s 6/128 variant is something you should seriously check out)
Go with Redmi Note 8 Pro
As i strongly believe she doesn't require anything like Snapdragon 845
Hello!
I'm need a new phone ASAP since my last one died a few days back, my intention is to use it for a few years and eventually once the updates sto and the phone starts slowing down, unlock the bootloader, root the device, flash TWRP and get strated with some ROMs.
Is Redmi Note 9s a good choice considering this?
Is the 4GB version good enough or would the upgrade to 6gb be substantialy noticable and worth it? (I initially wanted to get the 8T but it's only ~$25 upgrade to go with the 4gb 9s instead and over $75 for the 9s in the 6gb version.)
I also considered the Note 8T and 8 Pro.
From what I've read it seems that the 8 Pro is the best of the budget Xiaomi phones but it's the most problematic one with a big potential to get bricked.
The 8T would also probably be fine, but it's a very small difference in price between it and the 4gb version of the 9S which seems to be better in every way.
The 9S seems to have great potential for modding, with easily unlockable bootloader and a Snapdragon that afaik doesn't like to brick itself like the mediatek in the 8 Pro does.
9 Pro is a bit pricy for me, and it seems like tehe only difference is the NFC that i don't need.
What do you guys think i should get?
I'm sorry if this is not the right place to ask but since it's a forum dedicated to the development for a phone i consider buying with modding in mind i think it fits here nicely.
I think your best choice right now is the Note 8/8T. It have time on the market, so it have a mature scene of development. The Note 9S is new on the market, and also comes with Android 10 preinstalled, that means there is no official TWRP available and so means less development. Also the Note 8/8T have a Snapdragon SoC, best choice for modding compared to MediaTek on the RN8 Pro. Finally, the RN9S have some bugs that isn't resolved, and we don't know if they are hardware or software bugs, because Xiaomi isn't capable of fixing it, even with a couple of software updates. (wifi on sleep bug, pocket mode bug, bluetooth volume bug)

Was in OP's situation with my LG G5, went for the 9S Global. Has all the bugs you listed and MIUI is aggravating as all heck. I came from LOS 17 and I appreciate the hardware. Yeah, I'm also thinking of install GSI ROM by Sooti, but it very annoys me, because isn't right to unlock and mod a month-old device. That really speaks bad about Xiaomi, I think the aggresive phone launching cycle (10 or 20 only the first half of this year!) is affecting the quality control.

You are in the same situation I was in, I finally decided on the 9s for precisely the same reasons that you say. Good choice (I bought 4gb versión, I think 6Gb will do lightly better, but unless its price is similar, I don't think it's worth it
I'm looking to buy a new phone. I'm looking at OnePlus, as I want something close to Android stock.
I'm not a power user, I just want a good daily driver that will last me a few years and has a good camera.
I initially thought about the Nord 8/128 for €300. Then, I noticed the 12/256 version is at 350, and thought it might be a better option due to extra RAM and space. appvalley tutuapp tweakbox
Then, I noticed that the Oneplus 8T is at 400 for the 8/128 version, and thought about going for that even thought it's slightly out of my initial budget... but all reviews point out that it has a crappy camera.
On the other hand, all reviews I've seen say that the Nord 2 has a good camera (or, at least, it's the better out of these 3). The 8/128 version is at 400, while the 12/256 is at 440.
So, in a pure Black Friday fashion, I went from planning to buy the Nord for 300 to aiming for the Nord 2 for 440. Am I aiming correctly, or is this a mistake I'm going to regret?
Nord 2 is much better than Nord. Period. You can do own research.
Compared to 8T the camera is better. Even get better score than OP 9

Few problems with being a OnePlus product and Mediatek SoC - so no easy to customize and custom ROM development. The update to Android 12 seems to bring Color OS to the phone. And seems a bit buggy, as per reports.
After almost 1 year of use rooted , very happy and stuck with latest OOS 11.3.
Edit: DN2103 12/256 bought for ~430€ on Amazon offer.
Why not the Nord 2T? The base model is only 20€ more expensive than the Nord 2 base model. I gifted it to a family member (not a power user) recently and they're very happy with it.
Also if software updates are important to you, you will get 1 more Android update on the Nord 2T vs the Nord 2.

I need a second phone so I looked few models. 2T was one of them. I didn't like the Android 12 + Color OS, which came out of the box. Reviewed the sub-forum for the model here.
I am concerned about Android security updates. Unfortunately with every update OP brings new, unpolished features, imho.
I like Oxygen OS. Not sure if Color OS introduced in Android 12 update and remove fastboot mode are better decisions, regarding end users ...
About the updates when feel outdated will switch to custom ROM. We will have mature ones in few months. There is some right now, too.
Cheers.
Why not a Samsung , realme , OPPO , Vivo phone ? Oneplus isn't now what it was once time ago ... Support is ZERO since they passed resposability to indians more then that MTK is a pain for rooting or else . Look to Android 13 , it is developped and beta relesead , we don't have a stable Android 12 , yet and there aren't any signs to receive it soon . Every new update release is a real mess and one after other they missed important characteristic being all so minimal .
In my opinion , don't buy !!!

OPPO and Realme are the same like OnePlus. Considering OPPO X3 Pro which is about 800€ now or less. Or X3 Neo ( a bit dated soc and screen ) but I am afraid that what happens with OnePlus will happens with two other brands. Realme GT2 an GT2 Pro are interesting, but as part of BBK we can expect the same. Buggy software and zero support as you stated.
About Samsung there are some not user friendly problems as I read, with the latest models, so discarded. Vivo 80 plus look great but it's price is 3x of my Nord 2.
What you really suggest to buy for 400-800€? Pixel 6? There are few review about it. Motorola Edge 30+ is now 600€. Maybe will go for it. And again, what are your suggestions? Thanks.
@ roldev : You're right , it's hard to pick one on global market phones today . We have a imense mid-range market , High-end are very expensive . What I noticed is all manufacturers have serious problems with software platforms like all specialist developpers are gone on other planets . Oppo , OnePlus , Xiaomi even Samsung released huge buggy updates beyond any understanding reasons . A few years ago there were updates tested and tested and tested and afterthat they released them by OTA or else . Today all seems to be a bunch of amateurs . It can't be right this way . Maybe all brands rushed to reveal a lot of new (but old) phones only for earn quick money to cover some market needs .

You are right. They focused on quantity and not on quality, to be more " competitive ". Investing in production and not in support.
My goal is to get a mid range phone with stable lineage os support. Hope this one will get such, despite of the Mediatek SoC.
Cheers.

Nord 2T get 2 update for Android 13 & 14
Balanced device in a good price. Unfortunately, the OxygenOS updates are always very delayed. On the other hand, I have not experienced any important bug yet. For me, the ColorOS transition was successful. You can choose Nord 2T, it's slightly better.

Thank you.
ColorOS better than Oxygen OS? I hope you are right. 2T vs 2. Can you provide data? Not the marketing ones. Any benchmark or unbiased review? Newer not always means better, trust me.
1300 is rebranded 1200 with less performance.
The new firmware become more 'closed' to avoid need of support...
Two examples.
Sold my Nord 2 after two months. Far to many errors with it....
Assistant wont work from the lockscreen
Whatsapp voice message recording stops after 2 secs
Often charging only to 80% with optimized charging disabled
Bluetooth volume in car all over the place and not staying where I set it.
And also this "still on Android 11" update farce.....
Got a Xiaomi 11 T pro now which is much better value for money....
@terry_mccann maybe you got refurbished and 'tweaked' unit.
11 months with the Nord 2, here and did not face such problems, neither others.
Rock solid, stable, good performance and usability staying on oos 11 a_20.
Always update few months later to be sure that the bugs are fixed.
Despite de Mediatek SoC, there are few custom roms on active development for future. Lineage, Leos, Pixel experience, phh among others.
Even more, today bought the second Nord 2 on offer 350€ for 12/256 so I will clone 1:1 my 2 phones.
I choosed this model over OnePlus 9 pro for 660€ (12/256), Motorola Edge 30 pro (12/256) for 540€ or Motorola Edge 30 (8/128) for 360€....
The Nord 2 works well in my office with demanding workflow, in the fitness and the swimming pool, supporting some humidity even no oficial IP rating.
No bugs here. Rooted with magisk for 11 months. Hope this helps.
Cheers.

" Motorola Edge 30 pro (12/256) for 540€ or Motorola Edge 30 (8/128) for 360€...." , oh man , those two phone have GG3 on front and GG5 on back . In my opinion I couldn't see any stupid thing like that in history of manufacturers , it's so retarded ideea ... Despite their capabilities such of error with Corning Gorilla Glass is a real mess .

Yeah, their reason is that GC3 has better scratch resistance than GC5. So it's ok if you never drop your phone
Few bad decisions about this phone avoid it to be really good.
Really hope to have good 100% working custom ROM with easy update for the Nord 2. It's very popular and there's a lot projects...
