"No service" system bug - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A friend gave me a sm-j510fn, having the "no service" error. Phone reads sim card w/ contacts etc. and sim has signal on other phones so it's phone related.
Tried various things like IMEI number check, airplane mode works but when turning it off, icon is stuck "midway", not completely grayed out. Also tried partition cache wipe from recovery mode. Manual mobile signal search gives error and nothing else.
I don't want to risk rooting it so as last thing I'm probably going to do a factory reset, should I try something else before that?
Update: I went ahead and rest the phone but the problem persists. Could the phone antenna be busted? Wifi works fine when connected

[Q] Phone doesn't read sim card anymore

After a normal reboot of my phone, it suddenly doesn't read my sim card anymore. When I turn it on, I'm not asked to enter the pin code and the phone doesn't connect to the network.
If I go into settings and change the pin code, or turn it off, I'm asked to enter the original pin code, so in that way there's still a connection to the sim card.
When I've done any of the above, the sim card seems to been "activated", and the phone connects to the network, and everything is as it should be until the next reboot. Then I manually have to "activate" the sim card again.
The phone has worked without any problems for a long time with the current CyanogenMod 9 custom rom and my current provider, and I haven't changed anything that suddenly can cause this.
Some suggestions to what can be wrong?
Does the sim work with other phones ? If so, it probably isn't a problem with the sim. In that case, try a factory reset in the first instance.
If that fails to work, try a fresh/clean install of CM9. If that doesn't work, reflash a Gingerbread stock rom & see if the problem persists. If the problem persists with a GB rom, then it's likely to be a sim/hardware issue.
The other thing that comes to mind is have you flashed a recent CM9 nightly ? This might explain it working OK previously with CM9 & not working now. Obviously CM9 is beta, and something funky might be going on with a more recent build/nightly.
I've now finally managed to find another phone and another sim-card.
My own sim-card works fine in the other phone - and when I put the other sim-card in my own phone it doesn't ask of the pin-code and it doesn't connect to the network.
So I believe my phone needs a complete reset - when I've got the time to do it...
One strange thing is, that at one reset earlier this week my own phone asked for the pin-code - but only once...??
I think I've found the problem. Either it's caused by Avast Anti-Theft alone or it's a combination of Avast Anti-Theft and CyanogenMod 9.
I believe it's the last one, because everything worked fine during the first time I switched from stock ROM to CM9, but then suddenly the error with the pin-code occured, and I could be caused by an update in the CM9 version.
But when I restored factory settings on my phone and started again from zero, everything was okay, and I was promted to enter my pin-code. It was the same when I restored my apps and data with Titanium Backup, but then when I installed Avast Anti-Theft the error occured again.
Actually I restored my phone once again just to make sure, and it was the same - when I installed Avast Anti-Theft, I was no more asked to enter the pin-code and the phone did not connect to the network.
So now I know what's wrong and maybe also why - but I don't know how to solve it...!?

[MI-One] after first reboot - no signal

Hey... I got mi Mi-One today.
After the first reboot I lost the signal.
I updated to the last version and the signal was there again.
But then i started the phone again and the signal was gone again.
If I am doing a factory reset the signal is there again untill the first reboot.
Could anybody help me?
It looks like a software error but no one else seems to has this kind of error.
If I am trying to change the network manually, it says "network query failed"
for some reason is it working, if i clear the dalvik cache and reboot... after that I always have a signal - strange
edit:deleting /data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]@[email protected] is solving the problem.
On each reboot the system is creating the system again and everything is working well.
Just this one sim card is causing this problem.
Is there any way to enter a commant so the phone is deleting the file automatically on each reboot?
I'd like a solution to this too. Have the same problem. Haven't erased delv thing yet but I'd also like a permanent fix. I'd bet it's my Sim card too. Perhaps T-mobile will replace my card and solve the problem. Will update...

Sola - no signal and reboots

Hello everybody!
I was on ultimate v8 when my phone started rebooting in recovery without any reason, and entering recovery.if i restarted the phone i didn't had signal.
the phone worked properly without the sim card (tried two cards, it had this problem with both of them)
i thought it was a rom issue, so i flashed the stock rom, relocked the bootloader and used sony update service to repair my phone.
i didn't install any applications, and for a couple of hours it worked normally. afterwards though it lost signal again and started rebooting.
did a clean install again with no results.
any ideas what how should i procceed? is there any way to fix it or shoud i visit a service point?
ps sometimes it seems that sim cards are not properly recognised. it's not that it has the sign, that shows that there is no sim card, however sometimes i restart the phone and it doesn't ask for the pin code

hmm...do a factory reset using cwm then flash stock ICS .54 rom & see it works or not.
i've wiped data, cleaned cache, dalvik cache etc many times while i was on ultimate. i've also flashed the stock and did factory reset via the menu in the phone as well via sony update service... i was thinking of flashing radio, but couldn't find the file...

[Q]Erratic WiFi after 3.24.531.3 Update. Turns off when trying to connect to network

A few days ago I got a software update notification for 3.24.531.3. I ran the update and everything seemed to work fine. But when the phone rebooted I noticed I was no longer connected to my WiFi. I figured I just had to retype the password because of the software update. I typed in the password and hot "connect" and the phone froze for a few seconds. Then it flashed an error message say "unable to connect to network" and the WiFi turned off. So I tried connecting to an unsecured network and the same thing happened. So now my WiFi isn't working at all.
At the time, I was completely stock, not root, locked bootloader, nothing. So I though maybe unlocking, rooting, and flashing a custom ROM would fix the problem. I've tried a few different ROMs and they all have the same problem. I can turn the WiFi on and scan, but as soon as I try to connect to any network it freezes and turns off. I even get an error message say that "Settings has become unresponsive" and asks to send an error report to HTC.
Then today, I got another software update message saying there is another software update available but I can't download it since I can't connect to WiFi at all.
Any ideas what I can do to fix the problem?
Go to your settings and rename your phone "HTC One"
Problem solved.

Thanks for your reply
I've tried that. I got it renamed in the WiFi Direct setting and in the About>Phone Identity settings, but when I type in the password it hangs then pops up with "failed to connect to network" and when that closes the WiFi is turned off. It's like the WiFi turns itself off while it's trying to connect.
I've gone through and turned off all the Power Save and Sleep settings thinking that was causing the problem, but that didn't do anything either.
Just flashed with a Stock 3.24.531.1 RUU and still getting the same problem. WiFi turns on and off erratically. I restored my google setting which saved my home WiFi password and it connectst to the network, but has no internet. And everytime I try to change the WiFi Direct name to "HTC One" it "fails to rename device" and WiFi is turned off. Hopefully now that I'm back to stock I can use internet pass through to download the new software update and that fixes the problem.
Was able to run the OTA update to 4.4.2 and am still having the same WiFi issues. I have no idea what the problem is

New ROM and Now Phone Won't Recognize Any SIM

I wiped my LG G2 (vs980...unfortunately) on Monday from an old custom ROM and installed a new CM mod (13). Since then, the phone won't recognize any SIM inserted. I wiped all again, and installed CM 12.1. Same deal. Went back to CM 13 and nothing. Now upgraded to RR 5.8.2 (latest they have for the vs980 model) and still nothing. Everything else works great (apps, wifi, bluetooth, etc), but it still does not see any SIM. I also noticed that when I go into settings and select Cellular Networks, I get a "com.android.phone" error (Not that annoying "Unfortunately..." mess people used to get and it asks if I want to close the app. I have tried clearing all the caches and app data, going into test mode and turning off the radio (several times) for up to an hour, powering fully off, removing the SIM, leaving out for an hour before reinserting and powering back up, and even changing the IMEI number and nothing has worked. By the way, using TWRP 2.8.6.0 to flash my drive.
Oh, and I used 3 different SIM chips and they all work fine in a PUK.
Someone please help. I can't afford a new phone right now.
