Root Fossil Q Marshal Gen 2 - Wear OS Software and Hacking General

Hello,
I'm new to the rooting world and I am unaware of how to root my Fossil Q Marshal Gen 2... I use an iPhone so im planning to use android studio on my Mac for the same. Pls help me. Thanks.

In terms of actually rooting it, I'm afraid I can't help. However, I have a Fossil Gen 3 Marshall and wanted to do something similar, but my intent was to flash AsteroidOS. The response on here seems to be that it couldn't be done (certainly the flashing the new OS) due to the lack of ports. However, some long and intensive googling suggested that yours (and I suspect mine) does indeed have a data port, its just covered and internal. I have seen the four (actually, I think five) pins that I believe to be the data port, which might facilitate the flashing a new OS.
This is something I intend to keep looking into until I can find a way to keep Google from my devices!

Yeah popping the watch open and making a pin connector to touch the board with, will allow you access to Fastboot Mode. This has been proven on another Fossil Watch missing the USB Port. And Since I'm guessing most of Fossil's models remain the same with different aesthetic tweaks, most everything should be the same.
We just have to make a Fastboot Connector and then pop the watch open to access USB. I bet you they left most of the bootloaders unlocked that didn't have physical access to fastboot mode. I know my Smartwatch actually has all of its log set to ENG. So there is actually a lot of data to sift through in recovery mode logs and everything. But we can't access the data in user mode. But it is there if we can make the pin connector.

Also interested in this if. Will be watching for answers because I would love to remove sone bloat and mae my waych a little snappier in performance.

Sony Security

Hi Guys,
First post here so I could'nt post in the relevent thread. It has been noticed that there is a switch on the Tablet S PCB that apparently disconnects the battery, I've opened up many devices over the years and have never seen that before - very strange if you ask me. Might be of interest to some to note that the Sony PSP used an anti hacking method that utilised the battery !!, so we may be on to something here.
On PSP a hacked battery is called "pandora battery". It is not a switch. The battery has four contacts. Two of them are the voltage contacts plus and minus and two of them send a serial signal code. With the right code, the PSP boot in a special (hidden) recovery menu. Do you have more information about the tablet battery and the switch? Pictures available?
Wouldn't the relevant thread be the ones you found out about on it?
original discovery of switch here (with pictures)
Then I brought it up in the dev thread about APX mode here
And yes it exists... can confirm it's there (at least on my 16gb model anyway)
My thoughts are is that there would be a factory cable used here (similar to the motorola factory cable) and they need to disconnect the battery for it to function as it should.
And a hunch that it could very well have something to do with APX mode, however... since people have stumbled into APX mode completely by accident with no hardware commands, that kind of contradicts that thought.
I don't have any info on the battery or the switch, I was just pointing out the strangeness of having a switch to disconnect the battery, nothing else I have ever looked at has this feature. (and I've opened up a lot of devices)
It just makes me think that there is a need to easily and repeatedly disconnect the battery during the manufacturing / assembly / repair process.
For example, does the system "know" when the battery has been disconnected and allow different operations ? - fastboot perhaps ?
I know this is all supposition and it may mean nothing at all - but the feature is bugging me - it cost money to implement and I can't help but feel it's there for a reason.
System woiuld'nt let me reply in thread I was reading - said dev section was for expert users only ??

I thought of this too but then went on to think that there's probably no way such a thing would transfer accross do android/unix codes like that. ie they use android kernels and stuff, they don't make the whole thing themselves. Plus they realised the vulnerability of it and removed it in models like the psp 3000 and go (not sure about 2000).

Early PSP-2000 models still had the vulnerability.

You're actually pretty close, I think. Android would be perfectly capable of receiving certain boot codes, but these are far more likely to be wired to the more capable micro-USB port as in just about every other Android device. While an Android kernel could theoretically receive serial codes from almost anywhere given the right instructions, Sony would probably not do this. As mentioned, the PSP's ability in this regard caused many problems.
As mentioned by the others, if someone could post some good hi-res shots of the battery and surrounding PCB or something like that, that would make it much easier.
Sony's philosophy has always been that the end user should use the product as it was built and the purpose it was built for.
They've always made hacking and rooting very difficult for users. They don't like their products being tampered with.
I can understand where they are coming from, but at the end of the day, with many phones and tablets, if root techniques and mods aren't available, many users won't buy the goods.
All PSP models, including the 3000 series, excluding the go have been cracked.

pandora battery worked for psp 1000 and psp 2000 before the TA-088 V3 motherboard, all the next models where hacked by firmware homebrew enabler, but not by battery mod..

Just to clear things up, what works on the PSP will not, generally speaking, work on the Tablet S. They are different hardware, with different interfaces to different firmware which runs completely different software.
If we can get a look at the PCB in closer detail where the battery connects we might be able to see if there are any serial pins, but I doubt there will be. No other Sony product since has featured it (to my knowledge).

[Q] Suggestions for new project (with bounty)?

I'm looking at this inexpensive HDTV tuner/DVR. I'm guessing that they're ARM/Android-based but I'm going to buy one and open it up to see what's inside. It has all the makings of a cool, inexpensive little OTA DVR box - ATSC tuner, HDMI output, and a USB port for a TB storage drive. I originally bought the wrong (previous) model and played around with it. It was pretty responsive/seemed to have enough horsepower. Picture quality was good. DVR functionality didn't seem to work properly and the EPG was utter crap. If it's ARM/Android based and could be rooted, we could probably get XBMC on it and this thing would be a TiVo Roamio KILLER.
I could try to root it on my own but I've never done anything like that before and wouldn't know where to start. Can anyone point me toward any "how to root an Android device" resources?
I'm not without skills, but it would probably be better to just post a bounty and get help from the experts. What's the best way to go about doing something like that? What kinds of details do I need and how do I come up with the terms for the bounty? And WHERE would I post it?
I should probably add that I've googled rooting Android devices and the resulting haystack is focused on rooting phones. There's no MicroSD card to play with here - only the USB port - and no bootloader or BIOS prompt that I can see.
You could either try to get access through a serial or jtag connector, that is for example, how it was possible to change the firmware on the Fonera FON2100, which is maybe the easiest way.
Or you could try do disassemble a firmware update for this Router and reassemble it to work in your desired way, e.g. flash a different firmware.
Or you could try the numerous combinations of keys to press, where one may lead to something like fastboot.
But if it is really some sort of android-based you should try the various root-methodes like towelroot first.

Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" Factory Cable?

I see a bunch of various 'factory cables' for sell on Amazon, but can't seem to locate one specifically for a Kindle Fire HDX (Apollo - I think 2nd gen - had it for a few years now lol) - anyone got a link to a decent one? Or instructions for building one that is compatible with the HDX 8.9"?
Thanks!

You don't need it - nor do HDX devices (not your typical Android gizmo) respond to 'factory cables' except in a few unique situations that are only useful to those with advanced skills. If your goal is to load an alternative/custom ROM then use the 1-click bootloader unlock tool available here. Note a Linux or Mac (OS X) based platform is required. Windows users can utilize a 'manual' method but it is far more challenging and rarely incident/issue free.

Made some serious assumptions there, didn't we?
I've had my HDX rooted running TWRP/CyanogenMod 13 for quite some time. About a year ago the HDX went offline and I assumed the battery had just discharged. Left it 'charging' (I hate that I get no notification it's charging) for quite some time to no avail. I get no response regardless of power button held down, nor while holding Vol Down.
Today I came across it again (I just tossed it in one of the many storage drawers in my office) and decided I'd see what's up with it. Left it plugged into my powered USB 3.0 hub for about an hour, and plugged it into my Mac (note: I don't know where the OEM cable is. Just using one of the many usb micro cables I've got stored in those same storage drawers, lol), and lsusb doesn't locate it at all.
Started looking into setting it into fastboot / download mode to see if I could get a response from the device, and came across these 'factory cables' - figuring that would be a handy item to have, I started looking further into them, and realized that there are multiple 'versions' depending upon the product intended to be used upon.
Hence the question, which I'm afraid you've given no information on. Thanks anyway, though?

Well - based on years of experience with this gizmo, the associated user base and typical inquires I did make an assumption. Sorry if that offended you. I don't know the pin/wire cross used by the 3-4 individuals who have experience with 'factory' HDX cables. Might shoot a PM to @draxie which is the last active member I'm aware of who has such experience. The "OEM cable" is an industry standard USB-A/micro-usb wire; nothing special there. Good luck reviving your device.

Eh, fair assessment. I'm not on XDA as often as I used to be - technical quality sliding around here?
I'll hit up draxie, see if he or she might have the info needed.
Appreciate the info on the OEM cable being a bog standard affair. Wasn't certain if I was dealing with a 500ma-isn't-enough-to-run-with-discharged-battery situation

That is a different beast. HDX devices always route power through the battery pack with no known bypass. If the pack puts up enough resistance (pun intended) the device will not start/boot although you may get some indication that charging is being attempted. As for 500mAh, that's the max a standard USB2 port on a hunk of hardware can deliver if conforming to specs. A USB2 cable can easily carry the maximum ~1800mAh ([email protected]) HDX devices will accept with a standard 2A+ charging brick. No need for QC 2.0 or similar. Be cautious with QC 3.0/3.1 as it can deliver voltages well in excess of 5V if capability negotiation is incorrect/invalid. Such voltages have proven to fry the HDX rapid charge circuitry limiting it to the default 500mAh. Finally, you mentioned USB3. While rated at 900mAh it would almost certainly fall back to 500mAh given the legacy USB2 port on HDX devices. Always best to use an unintelligent 'host' to charge HDX devices and allow the internal circuitry to regulate current levels.

[mod] Wear OS on Fossil Q Explorist Gen 3 - Don't want Google

Hi all. First post here, but I have been reading a few thigs all over the place for some time and think this is a great place and resource, and every Android user should be directed this way. I'm not, however, a big fan of Google. I currently have an iPhone (don't hit me), but will be switching to an Android (as yet undecided which model, Sony XZ1C seems complicated for rooting due to DRM issues which I understand can be fixed now, OP 5T / 6) in the near future as the battery is not long for this world.
I got the above watch for Xmas, and I was wondering if there is a way of running it without the use of any Google services? A read around the wider web suggests that Asteroid OS can't be installed as it has no data out pins, but I have enabled developer options and there is an option to allow debugging over wifi. Can I therefore root the device over wifi and remove the need for the play store? There are a few standalone apps that would suffice for what I want to be able to use it for to be honest.
My biggest concern with rooting it over wifi is that it resets everything, loses the wifi connection and I then have no way to restabish the connection or send commands if it gets stuck somewhere. I think my wife might be a bit annoyed if I brick my Xmas present! I really do like this watch as well, a very nice looking watch that's a bit different to the offerings from the phone manufacturers.
Any thoughts on this greatly appreciated. Having looked around the web, I think I'll either be going for Sailfish or Lineage once I get an Android device.
Have a great day all and I'm looking forward to becoming more involved on these wider fora over the comings months.
All the watch and the OS is built around Google. This is not Android, WearOS communicates to the phone, tracks fitness, weather, manages battery and everything through Google Services.
And why would you remove them?
Sorry but even if you find the way to remove Google (by voiding warranty), the watch wouldn't work anymore as it should.
P.S. with WiFi debug you can only do debug, no root.

You're obviously new to this so I'd like to ask you not to do it. Flashing ROM or whatever you want to flash doesn't necessarily make your device better, also if you make a mistake - Usually that ends in bricking the device - then no one is responsible but you, and you'll have very hard time fixing the device.
Don't waste time and good working device for whatever reason you want to do this.
If you're still persistent on flashing your device may I know why you want to do it?

Yes I am newbie to these android boxes or tv boxes.
I purchased this box from local store 2 yrs ago. Not all channels stopped working. The box itself works (can't do much).
I wanted to delete whatever software they have installed and install basic Android, where I can install my own apps. Mostly iPTV smarter app.
that box right now is useless to me.

It's device specific so if you can't find the device model then I can't do much.
As for flashing you can only apply update which obviously doesn't do what you want, but you can try factory resetting. Some bloatware can be removed by factory resetting. Here is how.
Alternatively you can use SD card to apply update from it - Should you find the firmware - by following this guide.

Thank you for the compliment I am good natured. I wasn't going to use it as it was. After several failures trying to find a suitable firmware and bricking it several times I found the SlimBox Rom and am a happy camper.
Before I found the SlimBox I set out on a mission to take another firmware that worked good but wasn't set up for my wifi chip and remote configs and fix it myself. I got as far as getting it unpacked and finding the files I needed to do the fix but wasn't able to repack it. I did. all it does, restarted my box. I can enter the safe mode menu/security menu by just pressing 0 few times at reboot, so I don't know how useful that button. Its hard too.
Disconnect the box completely from everything but the power. Have to the box shut off depress the reset switch then plug the usb into the USB 2.0 port on the box. Then the burner should detect the box. Make sure the USB cable is rated for data transfer and the you are plugged into USB 2.0 port on the PC.

You know that reminds me. It's been a good while since I've done this and my memory ain't what it used to be. disconnect the power also. You don't want the box connected to anything. Then press the reset and then connect the USB.

what else I should do? I am able to run the upgrade.bin file via USB from this website http://www.eweat.com/download/iptv-box-linux/
It does complets the upgrade process. but the software is still there. I tried downloading some other .bin file and tried, to run that as upgrade it failed. so I know that website upgrade.bin is correct.
The ROM is a Disk Image File. I Don't know what to tell you. I'm not going to help you brick the box. Maybe somebody else will chime in because this is above my knowledge level.
