Netflix on Xperia 1 - Sony Xperia 1 Questions & Answers

I have 2 issues which I am hoping someone on this forum could help with
1. Videos on Netflix are really dark. An app kicks in once Netflix opens and I'm assuming this is the problem
2. No videos play in 21:9 as promised has anyone got this to work? Pinch to zoom doesn't cut it as it crops the video to make it fit

I've noticed these issues as you've
1. Side by side comparison with my Galaxy S8 clearly shows video playback on Xperia 1 is really dark. This is more noticeable with Netflix app and also with pre-loaded Spiderman Far From Home trailer. Not entirely sure if this happens with YouTube too (I think it does because S8's super saturated display blows off X1's natural colour reproduction. Maybe its just my perception.)
2. Only YouTube videos by default play in 21:9 for me. I wasn't able find single NetFlix show or movie in that aspect ratio.

I believe the Samsungs increase the brightness in video apps inc Netflix.
Is hdr dark in Netflix to?
21:9 is a common cinema scope, I hope they get this sorted.
Thanks

Try Thor Ragnarok, that one played 21:9 for me no problem

I will be testing mine in the next few days inc Netflix, local demo hdr samples, YouTube etc.

Some videos do play in full screen without pinch to zoom, for example fast and furious 8. It needs to be natively on Netflix in the 21:1 aspect ratio.

4k recording works with mi 3

I just tried this app from store and 4k recording works with that.. you might find it slightly laggy at times but do try it and report

it's a paid app... enable advance settings and select resolution and other options from videos tab

you guys can also try the app by downloading from the app thread but it would work only when offline

Great ! Thanks
Excellent. The only thing we need to do is to figure out if it's real 4K or just 1080p upscaled to 4k.
Can you do 1080p 60fps?

Nope. Even the 4K video is at a variable framrate so not of any great use as the frame rate changes from 15-25. I guess we'll have more access to camera functions once Android L comes out as it is supposed to have API's that give better control of the camera.

App to play YouTube videos on 4:3 aspect ratio

Our nexus has a very annoying aspect ratio, most of the YouTube videos won't just fit for full screen.
Is there any way we could make these videos fit on full screen!?
Change YouTube app's aspect ratio, or any other app which can play online YouTube videos, where we can make it fit on full screen I.e. with 4:3 aspect ratio???
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
I'm sure there are ways to do this, but it would result in cropping out and stretching parts of the video. It would be very unpleasant to watch.
I just got a Nexus 9 myself, and this has been my primary complaint so far. I also have an Ipad mini, so I am used to the 4:3 form factor. What's nice about Ipad is that in my video apps, there is an option to autocrop to full screen. I wish we had that on the N9 as well. For the majority of videos, it isn't that "unpleasant" at all, actually.

You're right. Second Screen only works when you project your screen onto a TV (miracast). I ended up using Dolphin Browser and MXPlayer. When you watch a video in Dolphin and click the Fullscreen box on the video, the fullscreen window has a 3dot menu in the upper right. When you click that, you get the choice to select a different video player. Select MXPlayer (installed separately) and the video will play in MXPlayer, which has controls for scaling the video. Set it to Fit Vertically, and it will fill the screen. Not an ideal solution, but it works.
When widescreen tvs were new (I'm that old) it irritated me to see people, mainly older people, watching 4:3 ratio programmes 'stretched' to fit. Watch stuff as it is intended to be seen!
If you have a nexus 7 it's a perfect size for widescreen. Okay, so older 4:3 ratio stuff will be a bit small. But think of the poor iPad users who paid four times the price for a larger 4:3 ratio screen just so they can watch widescreen material letterboxed at the same size as a nexus 7.
And dont get me started on people who video on their phones vertically...

HDR videos lookes washed out in Youtube

Hey anyone facing when playing a hdr video in youtube the color looks washed out
There is no contrast and no accurate colour see screenshot below
I don't think Poco supports HDR video with its "meh" display.
Edit: apparently it should support YouTube HDR playback in 1080p, but I think the screen is not capable of displaying it. I tried some videos and they look washed too.
Same Problem I have

Yup, I have checked for the same and yes colors are washed out tend to be more grey and white side so there is no hdr support in Poco. idk why they still show it in youtube listing like1080pHDR.

yes
this is annoying because if videos are HDR then we cant watch in youtube i didn't find any option to play hdr videos without HDR.
Pause the video in the exact frame, go to display settings, turn off Night/Read Mode and change the Contrast to Increased/Automatic contrast(Warm), reduce the brightness to the viewable range! come back to Youtube, you could see a nice difference in the paused image! shows good dynamic range! but once starts the video, display resets and it starts showing washed out images!! Looks display is ok to display issue in the software to me!
did anyone found how to disable hdr playback in youtube ?

This same video playback on my poco F1 looks like Ur screenshot 1 and def not ugly like the 2nd one.
Unfortunately I am not able to take a screenshot or screenrecord of the same .
The problem is with hdr playback the screenshot comes out black.
Is my display ok cos of the pie based beta 8.11.1 I am using.
Attaching screenshots to explain what is happening with screenshots
Well i played Avengers Infinity war 2160p.10bit.HDR.BluRay.8CH.x265.HEVC (3.69 GB) via both the stock video player and MX player and both rendered colors correctly ?
I can see HDR youtube videos near to the perfection for this screen. The colours are amazing.

I am whit MI 10.2 beta 8.11.1
I found a weird bug. Turn off auto-brightness and increase brightness. Now play an HDR video on youtube. While that washed out video is playing, hower your finger over the light sensor on and off. The screen will try to get dimmer for some reason as if the auto-brightness if on.
I can confirm too. YouTube HDR videos look more on the natural side and a tiny bit washed out. It's definitely doesn't render the more punchy Colors of HDR. Obviously because Poco display is not HDR complaint.
The youtube videos look way better on the web browser than they look on the youtube app.

Plays awesome in 8.11.1 beta Android 9 ROM...
Colours look beautiful for me in HDR. When I rotate the screen, it switches back to regular version for a split second and then back to HDR.
Running nitrogen OS on my device.

U mean to say the bottom ones are hdr videos playing on ur phone.
If that is true I certainly don't have such problems.
I have compared YouTube hdr playback on poco with non hdr playback on iPhone 8 plus and mine looked better.
If u can link which videos to download and test i can send screenshots.
the colors looked washed out, because when the phone is at max brightness (which HDR videos turns up the brightness automatically).
there is an option in "display"
"Contrast and colors" select "standard contrast"
pretty sure your issue will be gone, but do note that selecting this option will make your display look yellowish

HDR content, how to read files?

Hello.
I was wondering if some of you found a way to read x265 files with 10bit HDR content bt.2020.
Using the native video app or VLC, I just got a grey-ish screen like I have when watching the movie on my SDR computer screen. The native app didn't even decode the soundtrack (aac I think). Any clue?
I use a mobile version of Kodi, hdr works very well, mxplayer work . Besides I do not have any problem playing hdr on VLC either. Regardles to vlc you may consider turning YUV (FORCES CHROMA) In setting, advanced,
Ps sony Xperia one pick brights is not as high to fulfill full gamet of hdr , although do not qoute me on that
I will try those one, thank you.
I suppose it's about the codec used. I'll try another file

That a files format I use and plays perfect
I tried Kodi and MX player, and run the same as VLC:
SDR:
Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 1920x808 23.976fps [V: English [eng] (h264 high L4.1, yuv420p, 1920x808) [default]]
Audio: DTS 48000Hz 6ch 1536kbps [A: English [eng] (dts, 48000 Hz, 5.1, 1536 kb/s)]
HDR:
Video: HVC1 1920x804 23.976fps [V: Avengers Infinity War 2018 x265 1080p HDR10 [fre] (hevc main 10, yuv420p10le, 1920x804) [default]]
Audio: DD+ 48000Hz 6ch 512kbps [A: VFF EAC3 7.1 [fre] (eac3, 48000 Hz, 5.1, 512 kb/s) [default]]
HDR content here is really darker. But I was wrong, it's not grey-ish like on my SDR computer monitor. I have to set the brightness at the maximum to watch the HDR movie, and be in the dark. Well, the trailer of spiderman far from home bundled in the phone goes the same way (Video: HVC1 3840x1644 23.976fps 12480kbps [V: video handler (hevc main 10, yuv420p10le, 3840x1644, 12480 kb/s)])… I'm in creator mode, but maybe I messed up other settings?
It's boring, but I'll try a factory reset to be sure.
EDIT: nothing after a factory reset. Maybe I just need to put the briightness at the max for HDR content to have enought output for the light peaks.
Ok, so it was just a misunderstanding from myself. HDR file should be watched with brightness at 100%. It will not use that much Energy since the movie is purposely darker, allowing brightness peak on some part of the screen. Just watched Shazam in full blu-ray iso and it was really great. Beautiful screen. I need a 2To SD card tho xD

After latest update, phone automatically turn brightness to 100% for HDR content. At least this has been consistent with YouTube HDR videos.

I'll see that when I'll get the update. Not really a matter since it's just a swipe on the screen with VLC. Just a shame VLC is not 4k. I have my 4K video downscaled to the app to be read on a 4k screen -_- (proof is if I set the zoom to "centered", the image is twice time bigger than the screen, it should be perfectly displayed if it was 4k on 4k).

I may find a solution for the problem, the sony xperia one is running at 21:9 version of the 1080p which is not really hdr standard, try to turn off the game enhancement , it will switch back to native 21:9 4k it should switch to natively hdr... I have disable that on the very first day of mobile phone usage since I do not game on my phone.

Thanks, but are you sure game enhencer is used even when it's not displaying the game enhancer settings and with app that are not on the game enhancer list?
Anyway, I disabled it and VLC is still in 2K (I never had game enhancer working with this app since it show a big round Rainbow on the corner of the screen when game enhancer is working).
And I'm positive it's 2K and not FHD, the 4k movie are only cut by half. And it's logical since most phone work in 2k so VLC was developped with that in mind. Xperia 1 use the max setting available on an app till 4k.
Anyway, pentile 4k is really crisp and it's ok for me.
About HDR, just set the brithness to maximum to allow the phone to use enought power for bright peak. The rest of the scene is purposely dark because of this.

Question HDR Videos colour banding and grayish overtone. Do you have this issue too?

Hi,
I have Mi 11x Pro (haydnin) stock firmware 12.0.2-12.5.2.
I am having this really annoying colours issue on HDR videos. All HDR videos have really bad color banding in dark areas and the colours appear grayish. The HDR is activated (as I can't change color filters in toolbox) but the videos don't look anything like they should.
I have played side by side with another HDR capable device Asus zenfone 5z and Poco F3 GT (K4O Pro Game enhanced edition). The difference is quite night and day.
Setting the phone in day mode almost fixes the color banding , but the colors are still dull and grayish and the blacks look like I'm using an LCD mobile!
Here see for yourself. A video speaks more than billion words.
If you have this device.
Please set it to night mode.
Set brightness to full.
Play this video on YouTube from 2:30 onwards. (
)
And let me know if you have the ugly color banding and greyish colours as well.
Confirmed the same issue. Seems that Xiaomi has not handled HDR content well

I'm thinking of the incompatibility between Miui and Youtube app when playing HDR content.

I'm not talking about the camera pics/videos.
HDR is terrible in the Mi 11i. It oversharpens and has inconsistent saturation. I'm hoping they'll address that in the MIUI 13 update.
