Overheating? - Sony Xperia 1 Questions & Answers

My phone is overheating when taking 4K for any reasonable length of time
4K video was the primary reason I bought the phone, and it appears it can't shoot 4K for any reasonable length of time. 21 mins is the longest recording time in 4K that I have got, but that was from a cold start.
On a warm day, in regular stop/start use, heat quickly built up, even with no case, and my typical 4k recording time limit was 5 mins.
The camera app just shuts down saying it is too hot. The case of the phone gets extremely hot in one of the corners
This youtuber has mentions the same problem (1 min 5 secs)

MY Battery rundown test results;

So, on every new tablet I get I like to see how much I can squeeze out of it when I travel. So, with my test I have a movie loop until I feel I have an accurate calculation OR I run the battery down completely. I play the video in moboplayer, in airplane mode, with OS screen brightness all the way down, and moboplayers built in brightness at 10%. This is what I typically watch movies at while flying. It is well watchable as the lights are almost always off while flying these days.
So, I decided to run the same test on the note, as I am hoping it will be a tablet replacement.
25 minutes in - 97%
61 minutes in - 90%
93 minutes in - 84%
120 minutes in - 79%
152 minutes in - 73%
180 minutes in - 68%
181 minutes in - I fell asleep.
Its looking like I can squeeze over 9 hours out of this thing watching movies/tv while traveling, which is awesome since most flights I take are 3-5 hours which would leave me some juice left over for when I land. I think I could get even more if I used setcpu to keep the cpu down to 700mhz - ish. The only tablet I have had that competed was the iconia tab a500, which I was about to get almost 11 out of.
I thought this info may be useful for those considering ditching their tablets and using their phone to watching movies/whatever on while traveling.
Wow, thanks! I bwrely get a day with my infuse, so the note should easily last it ha. Thanks, makes the battery life sound even better
See the tl; dr part of this post...you'll easily get close to 10 hours, maybe more, in flight mode and with the screen brightness way down.
(you want the second screen shot...the first is an aftermarket crap battery)

Wow, nice post - quite a bit more detailed than mine!

My battery test is underway-Complete! 9+ hours video!

I decided to run my own battery test this morning. I created a 720p video copy from my Cars blu-ray. Copied to my Evo LTE, and started playing it on MX video player. It will play the movie over and over until I stop it. I'm trying to simulate watching video on a long flight, so I put it into airplane mode. Brightness is set to auto.
So far, the video has been playing 3 hours and 25 minutes. My battery is showing 66% remaining. So far so good. If the battery percentage is accurate, I should get 9+ hours out of this, possibly 10. I'll keep it running and see how long it goes.

Awesome! Can't wait for your results.

It's been playing for 6 hours now and the battery has 40% left. The phones seems to use about 10% per hour. Let's see if it will get up to 10 hours.
So far, I'm very impressed. My old Evo didn't last long at all playing videos during my plane flights.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, the 720p video looks amazing!!!!

Ok, so I stopped the video when my phone hit 10% battery life. The phone continued to use approximately 10% of the battery life per hour. So the final play time was 9 hours and 8 minutes. It would be very close to 10 hours if I kept going. Excellent battery life if you ask me!
(the screen shot was taken after plugging the phone in to start charging her back up. that's why you see 11% and the charging icon)

Not to shabby. It can only get better with some custom ROMs & Kernels, to maximize battery life.

Really? He gets ten hours out of a mobile phone playing 720p video and all you got is "Not too shabby"? When my Galaxy Tab was new I did a test with a video at native resolution in airplane mode and got like 5 hours of video. Considering the size of both batteries, I'd say ten hours is fricken bloody phenomenal.
As a different comparison of usage, I played about 3.5 hours of video over wi-fi on my LTE on Friday. The first half hour was through the flash player, and the latter 3 hours via the twitch.tv app. I did also have it off the charger for like 9 hours entirely and made a short phone call too. Not only is the battery on the LTE amazing, the frugalness of the hardware in using it is also.

lol. +1. This is so true and funny
Here are the video details if anyone is curious. I'm not sure if things like bit rate affect battery life.
just for comparison.
i did a similar test with my OG Evo, 4 hours it would play movies then it shut off at 0%
OP, your results are impressive. Can you post more information? I'd like to know about the audio stream. And also at what speaker volume were you playing the movie?

Heat

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the OnePlus 8 Pro stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
No complaints really here but noticed it running warmer than my Exynos Notebultra 20. By a Celsius under my regular usage patterns.
Here's my GSAM temp charts.
We've recently entered Spring here in Australia. Using the phone outdoors on the weekend in 34 degree temperature and full sun, my phone would overheat and prompt me to shut down services after about 5 minutes of casual use (web browsing and background services only). I removed the genuine cover which helped a little, but still frequently overheating. This phone is useless if it can't be used outside...
According to the Health and Safety guide accessible within the phone itself.

Yeah, I've got same issues. Left couple of times in UTE and every single time it switched off due to high temperature. I did not have issues with another brands. Top dollar useless phone.
When I experienced the temperature issue I was running OB2. I'm now running the stable build, and it seems a little better (though I need to do more testing). What version of the OS are you running?

Hi,
Thanks for replay. I am on latest Android 11 (Oxygen OS 11.0.1.1.IN11BA) and for me there is no any improvements. For me it is frustrating because I need often use it as hotspot.

Ex kernel manager
Gonna have to chime in on this one. Coming from the 7 pro I was expecting better.
Have had some quirks with this phone still working on one being it likes to not wake the screen up now and then right away. Annoying but the only real gripe is that when I record a video... Jesus that overheats it.
4k @30fps screen brightness half, 120hz, qhd. Overheats around 930 to 11 on the dot.
Brightness down does nothing
60hz and fhd allows me to keep recording after it overheated (meaning it will stay under the line of what's the redline for overheating with the screen turned down even if I just bounced the flash off)
For kickers I threw it into 1080 p mode @30 and she **** flash down around 5!!!!!
Honestly the main gripe I have with this thing is the overheat issue when recording and the camera on the 7pro beats the 8 pro

Glad the OnePlus 8 Pro now beats the 7 Pro...
After my msm full reflash I can now use stock camera without overheat issues! But I'm still cycling between the 2. After the msm restore and a new kernal I'm now as cool as my 7pro and am finally happy last report back

Question Video: What's the maximum 4K recording time the Pixel 6 gives you? Does it overheat?

Hi,
Potential Pixel 6 buyer here. I'm wondering how long it can record video before overheating. I've had issues in the past with phones overheating after a few minutes.
If it does overheat, what happens? Random shutdown?
Thanks.
That would depend on space available? I would expect you to run out of space before it got hot enough to just shut down, and it also depends on other stuff running in background, and I know just because an app appear to be in background, it may not have background functionality, so runs at full speed, in the background.
You'd read lots of complaints if it was that bad as in minutes

Question Temperature/battery life for long video recording?

I will be buying the Pixel 6 (base model, not the Pro) this month, but I have an important question.
I record videos for youtube on my phone. My previous phone was a Sony Xperia XA2, and while it was great for the price, the phone would overheat after 5 minutes of 4K recording, or 15 minutes of 1080p recording, and its battery would fall down to 5%-10% after 30 minutes.
My question is: can I use the Pixel 6 for long recordings (45min-1h) while plugged in, without worrying about the battery dying on me while recording? I don't mind if the phone gets a bit hot, it just needs to withstand longer video recording without dying so I can save the video file & transfer it to Premiere over on my PC.
