When I open camera app, the back camera lens moves front and back and makes 'clicking' noises as it sort of hits the glass in front it. When taking photos, cant hear any noise. but when switching to video recording mode, the same 'clicking' noises happens again. And switch back to photo shooting mode, the noises persist.
Is this normal? the noise the lens makes?

there shouldnt be an audible noise when Focusing, but certainly when switching from Photo/video there will be a slight noise as the Aperture/Stutter opens/closes etc, its not a major problem

I went to a Carphonewarehouse shop, and tried their demo phone, the lens doesn't make any noise. Besides, in my case, the lens physically moves front and back when you open the carema app and swith between photo/video shooting modes.
My camera does move and makes a slight noise when turning it on or switching to video mode. I assume that is normal behavior. Can't remember if it acted the same when buying the phone, meanwhile i changed the rom from KE1 to KE5 and updated camera from SamsungApps twice.
I had the same problem, it "clicks" two times if you activate the camera. Sometimes (but very seldom) I could even feel the "clicks" while holding the phone.
In some other thread I read a quoted statement from Samsung support that this is a malfunction and the camera will take damage over time.
Since I had the same problem, I contacted support and they asked me to factory reset my phone. That did not help and so they asked to send my phone in for checkup/repair.
Well, it should have arrived today at their repair facility, so I'll just have to wait and see...
yea, i thought i already broke the camera ;-)
Looks like majority, if not all, of S2 cameras behave like that, so i doubt it's a flaw. Some say it's normal, some say it isn't. Guess an official reply from Samsung could make some light on this.
Well, if the Samsung support wanted me to send it in because of this issue, I doubt that this is normal.
Anyway, it really seems normal - just got my phone back. They could not retrace my problem.
Nevertheless, if its turns out to damage my camera somewhere in the future, I have the repair voucher wich should help me in this case.

So your camera still clicks twice when opening it and switching to video mode ?
This is normal, the camera checks that it's ok (the aperture). It does this sometimes when starting up the phone as well.
Is it actually touching the glass cover or does the mechanics just making the noise?

The latter.
Just done some sets under a strong light and can confirm the lens is actually hitting some material. I assume that this is a hardware defect and will have to be fixed some time during your warranty period. When i get some time ill try make a video of it happening.

Actually, you will find that all OC cameras behave the same, i highly doubt that every SII device with an OC camera is broken
Ive had a few phones that do that. I wouldnt worry too much.
Well normal or not here it is, ive posted a youtube video of it happening. you can see the lens does in fact hit the glass.
I am posting this just as an insurance for all the members,so if the cameras starts failing for some reason we can prove it was happening from the very start and get some sort of defect fix?

I could bet 100 dollars that your camera version is OC. Could you please check ?
from what i can see it is down to camera firmware which makes the camera do it. i also think that why some do it and some dont is cause we have the wrong firmware for our camera on the phone. its just being able to get all the firmwares and workout which one doesnt make the noise for our phone
Can we revert back to older camera firmware without factory reset? Kinda regretting upgrading now!
Does anyone else have the same issue as me?
I feel a rattle or vibration from inside the black camera bar.. I can feel it when I put the phone down. I also suspect it's causing the upper speaker not to have a crisp sound.
Are you sure you're not hearing the components of the camera module moving around? They produce a light clicking noise when you shake the phone.
Mine does the same. When I hold the phone in one hand and tap my index finger on the lower half, no sound is made. Top half has a very faint rattle. I ensured that it wasn't the screen glass not being affixed properly (it's fine) and nothing is visually wrong with it. The click is louder when tapping on the front right (opposite of the front camera), which is where the rear camera is on the back. Guessing it is something with the camera, as @toratakeri said.
Mine rattles as well. Assume its thr camera. Wish it didnt tho. My biggest complaint is too loose power button.

Camera autofocus. The lens has to move when focusing
Sent from a phone that is not a 128GB Frost Nexus 6P
I don't think it's autofocus. None of my other phones, including my Note 4, make NO noises when tapped, shook, or moved. Something inside the space by the camera is loose and hitting part of the frame most likely. I'm not risking taking my camera glass bar off to fix it. I will see if my replacement device has the same problem.

My Note 4 and my fiancee's Note 5, along with many of my previous phones, have an audible rattle in/near the camera module when shaken or tapped. Your replacement may be less noticeable, but I don't think you'll find one that makes zero noise at all.
Mine does this also. My friends does also. I also believe it's the camera module. Let us know how your replacement sounds.

As we said, you can try a replacement device and see if it is quieter. Just because it is audible doesn't meant that the build quality is crap, it's based on the type of hardware they use for the shutters and mechanical focus. Believe it or not, even digital cameras have loose and moving parts. In the end it is you that has to be satisfied with your device so if you feel it is defective then contact Google.
My Samsung galaxy S6 edge does the same. Something to do with the camera. Especially when shaking the device I can hear it will.
With this device it's worrisome that I don't recall the noise when I first bought it
Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk
I read from a user on Reddit, that there was a similar rattle noise with the 5X, and that it had to do with the SIM Card slot.
Edit:
Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus/comments/3qfpl9/nexus_5x_rattle_from_top_of_phone/
I have no rattle noise whatsoever. If mine started to rattle I would return it in a heart beat
I've noticed this when lightly tossing the device onto my bed. However if I pick it up and tap it, nothing. Shake it, nothing. Not really a big deal for me.

that sounds about right
Both of mine had the sound. It's normal
Lol, every new phone there is a "MY PHONE IS RATTLING OMGGGGG" thread... search before you post nonsense like this.
Hey everyone. Just got the z5c and I noticed that the phone"s vibration is a bit "loose" comooring to my z3c. Also, about every 1 out of 4 vibrations makes a very slight but audible crackling sound. Has anyone else experienced this? Is that considered normal? It doesn't bother me too much but my main concern is the phone's longevity. Thanks
I have not noticed that on mine.
Mine too (Z5 E6653)
I'm not worried about it. The phone is NEW (2 months might be considered new).
And if it would break, the phone has 2 years warranty. And if it's outta warranty, it's not so hard to replace some parts yourself.

I've read that in another thread. It has something to do with the camera construction. If you you flick at the back next to the camera, you can hear the ratteling, too. In my case, after opening the camera app, it's gone when you flick against the same spot...
If that's not the case... well I'd return...

What does "snip at the back" mean? I'm not familiar with "snip" in that context.
I Do also hear this noise produced by the Vibration engine. I am using a tempered glass screen protector and I am wondering if the Sound might Come from the protector.
Did you experience any issues with this so far except for the "annoying" Sound?
i dont get that sound (film)
i saw another thread on this topic, i guess is the glass i have 5.1.1 maybe it also matter os ver

When I Do the Vibration test, I am also Not able to hear that Sound. It only comes up when the Phone vibrates only shortly, for example when you touch the home Button or when you write a text with Vibration Feedback.
Recently I recognized that I can reproduce that rattling Sound by tapping on the backside next to the camera. So I assume the Sound is produced by the camera lense because I read somewhere that the lense somehow "floats" freely on the Sensor.
Hi all. I just want to be sure that my 'problem' is not a hardware issue. I bought Honor View 10 five days ago and from day one I can hear some clicking or rattling noise when I tapp the top back side of my phone or when I put it on the bed for example (nothing to hear when I shake the phone). Sounds like something is loose near the back camera or in that top back area around the camera (maybe I'm wrong). When I tapp it near the middle or the bottom of back cover, everything is tight and without that sound.
I've read on other forums that this issue is common and that sound is from camera auto focus, lenses etc, maybe vibration motors or power and volume button. But I just wanted to see if anyone else has this 'problem'. And if this is not common, what do you think I should do? And, just to clarify, everything is working without any problems, just that annoying sound.
I get the same from my V10 here.
I guess we will have more people with it...
Nope. nothing like that in mine.
I checked the other one in shop and does the same but am not sure if it's only related with certain badge...camera seems to be fine but in instagram it just won't focus. ANyone with the issue?

The camera has optical image stabilisation, that's what the rattling is from, turn the camera on and do the same again and there will be no more rattling.

my honor view 10 also has that little noise when hit by the part of the camera, is normal as I see no ??
Yup. Same with my view 10. The top part made a lil noise when you tap it but it's normal. I heard the same thing on other phones before too.
Yup, I hear the clicking sound on my Honor View 10 when I tap near on the back. I had the same "issue" on my P10 Lite, but everything works fine, so there's no reason to fear.
Hey, nothing to worry about. It's not any issue at all or any kind of manufacturing defect. The sound comes because of camera and its lens function. You can observe such sound in other smartphones too especially when you open camera app and close it or capture something. It's more audible on DSLR cameras whereas smartphone camera it's less. So don't get bothered about sound and enjoy capturing beautiful photos with your Honor View 10.
I have this in my aswell, my guess is either the camera as some of you mention, OR it could be the vibrator thingy i guess..
I have it too. I tried to press the volume button and tap the back like that, but sill had the noise. Later I opend the camera app, zoomed and tapped the back like that. It had a different sound. It has to do something with the zoom function, because of the lenses. I think it's normal. The lenses have to move, that's the optical zoom.
Hello i hope you are well, this is my first post after a long long time i lost my xda and email acc so im writing from my new profile.
I recently got the S23U 512GB the green color something like a month after the release and everything was superb until recently i noticed the camera rattle and by camera rattle i don't mean when you shake it like in some cases i saw on YT and read on google, i read almost everything i could find about previous models and understood the concept of the "camera rattle".
My case i think is a bit different and what bothers me is that i'm the only one that uses-using the phone the phone didn't fall no drop whatsoever so my issue is that the camera moves like if you put a small object (coin, small rock) in a tin can and move it (not shake it) in the same maner i feel something in the phone moving for example phone is in portrait i tilt it to landscape i hear and feel it move and make a "tick" also when the phone is on the table i pick it up and tilt it to my ear to answer a call i hear and feel it the same way and its driving me nuts.
The cameras work fine and when x10 is active the noise-click is harder to notice but is there but i have no issue with them, do you have any idea about this dont know what to do as in my country i don't have samsung retails and don't know what to do...

By service what do you mean? Replace the cameras?
Yes. I would ignore it. Close the cam app when not in use. The cam normally should not be active when using the phone. wtf?
Try in safe mode to try and rule out a rogue 3rd party app.
Try clearing the system cache and cam data.
Try a factory reset. You can try reflashing it but doubt this will resolve it. Contact Samsung.
The micro motors used for optical image stabilization normally make slight sounds.
Never been aware of them on my Androids though.
The lens is supposed to move - that is how it is able to still take very clear focused photos while the user is unable to hold it very still or if the person using the camera is in a moving car on a bumpy road, etc.
I just listened while I shook my phone (S23 Ultra 512GB) a little bit - and I do hear a little 'rattle'. I have never noticed that before.
I am guessing but I would think that all the extra attention given to the camera lately (as it was considerably improved in a lot of ways) that they also updated the ability for the lens to be more sensisitve to movement, and that noise is probably the lens banging against the sides of it's lieelt enclosure. I am surprised however that if that is the case, they did not take this into consideracion and place a softer barrier around the lens so that when it bangs around you would not hear any noise - maybe they missed that in the latest go-around with their overall design changes - ?
I treat my phone like a piece of jewelry almost, only put it into a pocket that is empty, etc. - and so in my case I do not think there would be any issue as it is so very expensive I treat mine with kid gloves. I just got this phone to replace a Note 10+ 5G 512MB that had just started to fail - which I was surprised to note that I had it for 5 years - but got a great trade-in deal for it as it still looked like new.
Now that this has been brought to my attention I will also never really want to shake it at all and might sometimes worry about that... sheesh! (ugh!)
Thoughts - is this the cause of the slight 'rattle' noise? The best way is to walk inito a store where they have doisplay samnples - and just shake one.... If i remember I'll do that one of these days and report back here -

Um... it hasn't been 4 years yet for the N10+; got mine a month after they became available (N975U), it will be 4yo in October.
Shaking the phone won't damage the OIS but a high G impact might. ALWAYS use a good case like the Zizo Bolt to protect these heavy corner hitting, face planting happy phones from falls.
I tested 2 in store and none had this but neither had mine before. As for case i have the UAG plasma case paid 45$ and i think its tough enough but my cameras are fine but sounds crazy the rattle.
Need to mention no need to shake the phone just by moving it left to right or 90° it clicks-rattles
When not using the phone the camera lens will be lose. When I shake my s23 ultra I can hear lose parts from 100x camera lens and this is normal to hear when your not using the camera at all. But once I activate camera app and use x10 the rattle noise goes away.
You are hearing this noise because lens that moves forward and backwards between chip layer and mirror layer is light weight and when camera app is off or not on x10 then you will hear rattle noise from bottom camera lens. By just placing the phone to your ear or shaking it.
So this is not an defect and has been there since s20.

Lol, that's disconcerting. You'd think it have a "parked" position. Nevertheless it's likely normal.
On all my Canon lens with OIS the only time, if ever, you hear them would be when active. On my N10+'s I have never heard a peep from the OIS no matter what I do. Anymore when Samsung makes "improvements" I cringe. It didn't use to be like this...
Hey Sammy how about you design a flagship with the sub chassis layout like the S22U with the spen on the RIGHT side, expandable storage and efficiency that exceeds the N10+'s per mAh. Instead of jamming in heavier, larger, higher capacity batteries that get less SOT than the N10+ (1N975U1).
Can you do that? Or you just going to keep making lame excuses for your dropped balls?

If you live in a country where claiming warranty is as easy as getting meal, i suggest to just get a replacement.
I always know that any smartphones that have OIS will have tiny rattle sound when shaked, but not to the point you can hear it, unless you really shake it close to your ear and you really trying hard to listen it,
i just shake my P7P and S23U, and if any, my Pixel "rattle" more. And by "more" , it still hardly noticeable.
So, if it really that noticeable, i suggest return it and get a new one.
Just walk into a store that has the model on display and shake it. If it's the same sound you have no issue.
I can confirm mine has rattle sound. I think it's normal and appear when I really shake the phone. Not when I rotate from portrait to lanscape
