Hi.
I currently have a Nexus 7 (2013), which I'm very pleased with, but it's beginning to show its age.
However, the ROM support for Nexus devices have been terrific, and I wonder if there are any similar and newer devices with as good ROM support?
I have a few criteria:
7-8" screen - must be a "mini" tablet
Soft keys only - no hardware keys
Sim card is not a must, but would be nice
Any ideas for a good mini tablet that fits the above criteria, and has good support for custom ROMs? I really liked SlimRom, but it seems defunct now, sadly...

Good day all
I used to have a Captivate (Galaxy SI) then the Note I. Once I purchase a device, I instantly flash a CM rom. It's been a year of suffer with the not-fully-supported Note. Frequent reboots, Bluetooth and UI glitches, heat and charging problems. It's easier to live with theses issues instead of living with TouchWiz.
Long story short, I'm planning to purchase a new device. What do you think the best high-end device (other than f#$%ing Samsung) in terms of CM support.
I know, I know that the Nexuses are best bets ! But I wanna explorer other options (screen size, SD, resolution, camera, etc) :victory:
I've seen people give appraisals on Oppo Find 5.
You precious advices and suggestions brothers.

CM is developed as free and open source software based on the official releases of Android by Google, with added original and third-party code.
in conclusion phones like Nexus will always have a CM support.

Gens, I fully understand your inputs. For instance, my Note, which has been receiving its share of the nightlies and RCs. So far, I'm still getting heat problems, lags, bluetooth connectivity issues, battery drains.
I'm not looking for supported device. I'm trying to find almost(fully) supported high-end device. So far, I found that my best bet could be
1-Oppo Find 5
2-Xperia Z
3-Qualacomm-based Galaxy devices ?
What do you think the best of them could be ?

Oppo FFInd 5 is the one.:good:
After smashing the screen on my beloved s2 I'm looking for a similar sized replacement for around €150 asap.
S4 Mini seems be great value, it can be got for as low as 120 2nd hand. But its a bit bland and plasticy I think?
The HTC one mini is nicer, but not nearly as fast as the s4 mini.
Ascend P6 looks nice as well. Moto X? Any others?
Also a constant notification light is important to me, not a flashing led. Needs to have capacitive hardware buttons too. And good custom rom support, open sourced drivers etc
My alternative is to use my work phone, an s3, which I hate. Its dog slow. Whats the best ROM to use on the s3 ATM? CM11 nightly? Any good long term stable KK Roms?
I've been using Pound ROM on my s2 for the last year, by far the best ROM I've ever used.

Best stock ROM for s3 is revolution HD ROM. Best cm11 based ROM is archidroid ROM. (Note: There is truely no best Roms or best whatever, these are just based purely on statistics).
Hello dear people, I hope I can be forgiven for asking a potentially stupid question.
With my 850F batteries failing, I am hoping to get some more months out of this once expensive phone. So I've been looking at some custom ROMs to see if they make a difference. But it seems like the fingerprint reader never works. People tell me it's because the driver source isn't available.
So, is this a question of legality (the driver cannot legally be included with roms) or of possibility (the driver is deeply dug in)? Because if it's the former, I was wondering if there's some file I can take out of the stock firmware and put onto my phone to make the fingerprint reader work with any rom?
Also, I would like to express my dissatisfaction with the terrible support Samsung has given for this phone. We got one late update from Kit Kat to Lollipop. It looks so vanilla it makes one wonder why it took so long. The black background colors from Kit Kat changed to white, a terrible choice for an OLED screen. So with regard to the already meager battery, this update has been a regression.
I'm trying to get as many months out of this phone as I can until the next generation of phones comes out. I love the Samsung hardware but I might look for brands that are either more frequent with updates or open source enough so that custom firmware development is not hindered by unsupported hardware.
I'm thinking the next phone should just be under 5 inch and powerful enough to be a desktop computer running full Linux, like Ubuntu OTA 11 (if someone introduces Android compatibility) or Maru OS, so I don't have to carry around a laptop anymore.
Fingerprint scanner works fine with all Samsung based ROMs (OzcanROM and EpsilROM) only CM ROMs (CM and ResurrectionRemix) don't support it (aswell as heart rate monitor)

I hadn't even thought of the heartrate monitor yet!
Yes, I tried those non-Samsung ROMs. I thought if I use the Samsung-based ROMs, I might as well use the Samsung ROM.
Because they use proprietary drivers, and samsung does not disponibilize them, well, when marshmallow launch, its is POSSIBLE that Samsung bundle the source code with a generic fingerprint driver, as fingerprints reader support is a generic and system wide thing in MM, just like when hardware acceleration via GPU was an propietary thing in android 2.3 and being default on android 4.0
Hey, so im in the market for a tablet. I really like the specs of the z4 but the size of the compact z3. Was wondering peoples thoughts on this. I have a desktop at home and just want a tablet to take on the go. .My main concern is the hardware of the z3 being old compared to the z4. What is the speed comparison between the two. Performance wise is it a huge leap in the z4?? Thank you
@killuminati206
The Z3 compact tablet has a very slick form factor, there aren't many others in the market considering the weight and slimness. The h/w in my opinion is more than enough to perform reasonable multitasking. The only downside compared to Z4 tablet that I foresee is that the Z4 might get few more Android updates. IMO, the current .291 firmware is very stable and with a 64gb or more microsd, this can handle and store more than what you might require. Also note that at present the z3 compact tablet is at least 200-300$ lesser than the Z4 tab

Thanks for your input. Im really leaning towards the z3. I just want to make sure performance is on par. It has the snapdragon 801 and thats pretty old. Plus im hoping sony will be revealing a new tablet on september 1st.
I absolutely love my Z3. But if you want a custom rom you're looking at 5.1.1, none of the 6.x roms seem to work very well. Stock rom is staying at 6.0.1, Marshmallow and this device isn't getting 7.x (lack of support from Qualcomm for this chipset).
If you can live with the above, the form factor of the z3 compact is awesome and battery life is great. I carry this thing everywhere.

I just placed my order. My main concern is performance compared to new chipsets. I will be doing no gaming and will be replacing my phone. I hope i made the right choice. Any how is root easy for a newbie? Any recommendations for rom with best performance and battery life?
I have no idea about dev but how hard is to get RemixOs on this tablet? I don't see the advantage of CM instead of Stock on this tablet but RemixOS would be great.

Best battery life seems to be stock. If rooted you can run some cpu clock tools to jack it up a bit but, I wouldn't... especially if you expect to use it for a couple years. Go with stock and root it if you want to use Apps2SD.
there's a few rooting threads around, like this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-tablet-compact/general/how-to-root-easy-t3115418
Hello everyone i am about to get tab s7+ and i love the table just one question we have root and twrp why there is no custom rom and if i am rooted how to update the software also what do i lose with root what magisk don't fix? Thanks in advance
Hi. I think the lack of custom ROMs is because the device is fairly new - hence - not that popular, additionaly being an Android tablet. I ditched my Iconia A500 years ago and never thought I would go for a tablet again until this gem came out. I would recommend you to try it first for some time and play with it because there are tons of features (literally) in this device that would doubtedly work on any custom ROM in the beginning. At least that's my personal opinion - stick with stock for some time. Samsung have done a really great job! ....And what's more - Android 11 with One UI 3.1 is rolling out these days. It will allow you as far as I've heard to use Google discover on your foremost left screen instead of Samsung daily.

A general thing to lose with root for all Samsung devices would be those Knox-related stuffs, namely Secure Folders.
I've been trying to boot a GSI on the tablet but up to now all attempts have failed. The tablet refused to boot, despite there were no problems with the flashing.
I personally don't really care about those Samsung features as I've very little use of them at the moment. I bought the tablet mainly for its size and its 120Hz display, but after using it for a while, it seems the tablet's stock firmware is indeed not good enough (especially with the Android 11 update) and unless there be plenty of hope for custom ROM/GSI, you'd better off getting a recent version of iPad Pro 12.9 inch for nearly the same price, if rooting is not important.

Sorry but could you possibly share what's not good about the firmware? I've never used such a feature rich device before and everything runs smooth as butter, I'm using it as screen extender for Win10 laptop, Chromecasting, Samsung Secure folder with encryption, deeply integrated with all Samsung apps, I connected my 2TB NTFS external HDD with Paragon's NTFS plugin that allows NTFS write operations, home Internet runs at impressive speeds (50 and more MB per sec download), I draw a lot and the only thing that I've changed is the launcher. Of course if custom ROMs support all of these features it would be perfect!!!

You're right about the other features. For office/productivity works this tablet is an excellent choice.
On the other hand, this tablet's performance is very disappointing when it comes to gaming. I'm currently dealing with some touch-related issues when playing games (none of which would be a fatal issue for office/productivity), and comparing to my old tablets, I was expecting much more performance according to its specifications.
I think the tablet was never meant for gaming at all to begin with, however the specifications.
I'm working on a lineageos 18.1 bringup but this is the first time I'm dooing this, so I don't expect it to work very well. I'm fairly new to android development but recently I got official maintainer for resurrection remix for the oneplus 6 and 6T.
