I got the Sony 1 and was wondering if this phone will ever have root or custom ROM. Thinking about returning it and get the oneplus 7pro.

Depends how you update. Just don't update with ota or pc companion.
1 Downgrade to 4.4.2
2 Root phone
3 Install recovery for locked bootloader
4 Flash rooted 4.4.4 zip in recovery
5 latest firmware and root remains
I am new to Sony devices (been a Samsung guy for years). I have had my Z2 less than a fortnight but already I'm itching to root it etc, problem is it seems a lot more complicated than Samsung devices. I was always switching between roms on my S4/note 2. I am on the latest firmware and would like to root it to be able to use xposed but I'm scared of messing it up and as the phone is under warranty don't want to end up with a paper weight.
Has anyone done a detailed tutorial for newbies like myself?
Thanks in advance
Scotty.

It's not really that hard and there are also of resources online that can guide you.
1 Downgrade to 4.4.2 is required as noone had found a vulnerability with 4.4.4.
2 Root phone
For step 1 and 2, Have a look at this http://www.xda-developers.com/android/how-to-root-the-sony-xperia-z2-xda-developer-tv/
3 install recovery for lock bootloader
Have a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785598
4 install a 4.4.4 zip through recovery. I recommend this one as its basically stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/development/stock-4-4-4-23-0-1-0-167-bug-free-t2929402

It depends on how you want to root, you can root and permanently void your warrentg or you can root and keep your bootloader locked
As title really, can't really find a definitive answer.
It was a UK Tesco handset but unlocked to all, and still running the standard Moto stock firmware.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help man! I'll try this now.
I mean is there any possible way to root this device? I tried flashing SuperSU, didn't work. Then I tried flashing the systemmode SuperSU, got stuck in the bootloader warning text. I also tried some pre rooted Roms from the forum.. and they just won't boot. What am I missing here..??

I didn't. I had no clue what it was. I just flash recovery n install the SuperSU file with it on other phones.
Now I'll try rooting it once the nougat arrives.

Nougat could introduce more issues (e.g. Xposed doesn't work with Nougat as of today... Magisk & SuperSU... who knows?) but in theory steps should be the same...
More: this is unknown to most (and I don't have a clear explanation for it... only some hypothesis...) but even TWRP could have issues...
On another phone I've found (only one time to be honest... ) that an updated firmware required an updated TWRP to have it working (older one simply doesn't booted anymore even if reflashed...)

I don't like OTAs at all... I'll prefer going with flashing full images by fastboot (if stock images) or TWRP (if custom ROMs or zip flashable version of stock images...).
They are safer and cleaner than OTAs...

@enetec
Are you able to restore all the changes you made to /system, to successfully install the next OTA-update?
Or you just reflash the whole stock image before the next ota?

As I said elsewhere, I don't like OTAs at all...
Probably it could be possible to restore all as stock from my backups, but I will surely update (when I'll decide to...) using fastload or TWRP (depending of image formats...) as you said...

I already got twrp working all fine with my a530w and I rooted with magisk, all you have to do is follow the guide with every little tiny detail and it will work ?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...e-root-install-twrp-samsung-january-t3760975/
My old phone is on 11.3.A10, unlocked and rooted.
I'd like to return this phone to bone stock. No need to keep any data.
In my research the process seems quite difficult and the boot images hard to find. Is an simple automated reset not possible?
What about sending it into oneplus?
Any help would be appreciated.

I wish I knew how without bricking my phone. I dont have the stock version of the rom im using, or can I just flash any stock rom on top? I uninstalled Magisk, and multiple Root checking apps now say I am not rooted (or not properly rooted). I hope thats enough.
Are you sure I need to unroot before doing the guide?
Yes, because you can't lock bootloader
