How to restart Moto Z with non functional power and volume keys? - Moto Z Questions & Answers

Hello everybody! I dropped my Moto Z a few days back and now it's power and volume buttons won't work. Can somebody please tell me how do I start my phone without these buttons? I'll be grateful for any help!

Well, I have this problem with a Sony Xperia Z1 compact. Luck is, sometimes the button works. So I mostly need a solution which reliably reboots or shuts down.
I found that Magisk shows a reboot menu when you go to the Modules section. That needs Magisk app installed and device rooted. Probably there are more apps that simply offer a menu for rebooting etc.
I know this doesn't help you much, but maybe it helps someone else.
Some Samsung devices boot up (into fastboot?) with a special USB-plug that has got a specific resistor soldered between some pins... Maybe Motorola has something similar?
What happens if you plug the device to your PCs? maybe it boots into some maintanence mode by itself when attached to a PC? Perhaps you can reboot into system from there?

[TUT] Safe Mode

Mini PRO only
Shutdown the phone
Start the phone
W8 until the boot animation starts
Press power button+middle button + left button
the phone will vibrate
Release the buttons
The phone will ask for your PIN and you should be able to see a text(Safe Mode) on the botton left corner of the screen
And I have to ask something, What can do safe mode, that can't do xRecovery ?

if you didnt do a backup on xrecovery and if you install an app that may cause malfunction to the os. You can enter on "safe mode" and you can fix that.
i think it can help devs too... we need to explore the "Safe Mode"
well that's cool but its just something which does not allows me to play games and has dirty watermark of safe mode..! nothing much found..! dev people may try to **** around the kernel thingy! it might allow to change or edit it!
can it be used to reset setcpu settings in case of boot/crash loops due to overclocking too high? if so i can see this being useful to anyone who checks 'set on boot' option and has problems...maybe?
would solve alot of 'keeps crashing' problems people complain about
Tried this on CM7 v14.5 by slade86 on my X10MP. Booted, saw the safe mode watermark, then it automatically rebooted. It wouldn't even let me unlock the screen.
One question: because my phone's vibrator dont work, how many secs i must push the buttons?
Thanks anyway...
Thanks for the tip.
I see that some people are complaining that is not useful, it might not be for them, but you never know if it won't help other, and it's always nice to know what soft is capable, like the engineering or hidden menus.

[Q] Cherry Mobile Superion won't turn-on

Hi All,
I have flashed EUViewPad 7 based on Stock rom. installed SD Card Booster, CPU Master and etc.
The flash is fine since I managed to boot it and install several apps.
Until I needed to reboot the device since the hacker keyboard always forces to close. I rebooted it and poof I am in infinite boot animation without a way to remove the battery. afraid to fiddle just waited the battery to drain so I can test again(This happened on my O1. just removed the battery, put it back and its ok)
I have drained the battery after almost 8 hours of non stop boot animation. But this device won't turn on anymore. It just vibrates when I press the on button.
Tried opening the back(crap I have scratched the back covering. now it has large scratches ) but the battery is taped . My question folks is what is the possible solution to my problem aside from removing the battery(can't even get to clockword recovery)
Thanks
Not too sure about your device, but doesn't yours have a reset button like the viewpad?
Should be a small hole on the bottom edge right next to the microphone.
Try pressing that with a paperclip if you're having boot problems.
Anyway, if you've drained the battery completely, make sure to leave it charging for a little while. Too low battery voltage will make it unable to start. 15 mins or so should be more then enough.
Try starting with both volume buttons + power pressed. Keep holding it until you see "entering recovery mode."
Let me know if this gives any results.

Uh oh... Tried pressing the small hall beside microphone, pressed on button. No luck. tried pressing that hole and on at the same time No luck again.
Is it possible that it will mess up the whole boot process due to boot animation loop??

I'm afraid and it sounded like, from your descriptions, that the boot process has been messed up .... so, what do you got to lose by trying to "wake" it up or at least respond to commands, right ?
Try holding the power button & use a small pin to press RESET - leave it connected to the power supply/charging unit.
Try holding both volume Up & Down key & use a small pin to press RESET
Try holding both volume Up & Down key along with the Power button at the same time, and press RESET (you might want to get someone to help you to this)
Try holding the volume Down (left) key & Power button, and press RESET with a small pin.
Does any of these work in getting the screen to show life, be patient as you might have to hold it for 10 to 30 seconds before it cycle & restart/display the 3 birds ...
Chances are you will need to flash a stock ROM with the SULT3 utility, and then if successful, root it again & start over (carefully) - it might work or it might not even connect via usb at all .... worth a try, got nothing to lose at this point.
As a last resort, contact Cherry Mobile and get it repaired & sending it back to the shop .... check the warranty details in your locale, opening the rear case & exposing the battery, might or might not void your warranty coverage.
Hi Letiride,
I have tried the combinations you have specified but no avail. I can't boot this so my PC with correct drivers cannot even recognize i plugged this.
Is my Tablet already bricked?? I have bought this second hand so no warranty already.
Huhuhu Did I already have one of the "Vibrator" Android phone

Oh mine, no - if it won't power up or boot into Recovery or FTM mode, I'm afraid it's critical if not officially certified "paperweight". Try uninstalling your PC's usb drivers for the device, or use another computer & install SUTL3 utility from Viewsonic, and see if it can at least beep & signal some USB sequence loading the drivers.
Here's a link to Droid Explorer posted elsewhere in XDA (instead of pointing you to "Search" for it) Install it if you can get the yours powered on, but use it with care as it's a very "powerful" tool to explore all the hidden workings of the Android device(s).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=558108
My feeling is that the core image & boot file(s) were corrupted, damaged & overwritten, and it need to be reformatted & reflashed from a stock *.nb0 file, someone with adb might be able to - maybe, just maybe - rescue it.
Let's see if one of our fellow developers might have a better solution on where to begin b/c this is about as far as I can offer - well, you can always put on eBay for parts & hoped you didn't spend a lot as 2nd. hand.
Uhhh looks like i have no other choice but to have this repaired at service center and pay

[Q] Stuck in APX mode - I believe?

Hi everyone
I'm desperate.
My TF201 (stock - not rooted - and successfully updated to the current version) works flawlessly for the first 3 months and then one day the Volume UP key stop working. Whenever I tried to lower the volume, it will automatically up it again. When this happened, I tried to reboot with the power button but the tablet wouldn't respond. So I pressed the power button a bit longer and it will shut down. But, when I tried to power it again, I will feel the buzz but the screen will remain blank. The first few times that this happened, I used a small pin to reset the tablet and it will reboot normally. However, now this procedure also has stopped working and I cannot get the tablet to boot again. When I plugged it into my PC, it will recognize it as an APX device. I found that if I let the battery drain completely, it will then power up. I have read and tried the different methods mentioned in the forum but to no avail. So after reading sledgie's post in one of the thread, I thought that perhaps the Volume UP key is definitely stuck and that's why it's booting in the APX mode every time. So, I bite the bullet and open the tablet to see if I can fiddle with the volume keys. But alas, even after making sure that the volume key is not getting stuck, the nightmare continues and every time to boot the tablet I have to let the battery drained completely. What I could gather though is that it's definitely the Volume UP key because every time if I could get the tablet to boot, after draining the battery completely of course, when the ICS Home screen will appear the volume icon also will appear by itself. I found that so long as I don't the touch the Volume key, the tablet will work flawlessly and I could press the power button to get it to sleep and to wake normally. But if I touch the Volume key then the power button will not respond.
So, as I said I'm desperate and if anybody has a solution, please advise.
Thanks in advance.
Help!
Anyone?
i think you should exchange it or send it back for RMA. Make sure you contact Gary Key with regards to APX state. I wrote in the other thread without seeing this thread, but this is what it sounds like.
goodintentions made this really good observation and should be given credit

Another kind of situation that nvflash would be useful.
Sent from my i9250
agreed.
Sorry to respond very late but I want to know what this 'nvflash' means and how will it be useful in my situation. Should I 'nvflash' my tablet in the circumstances?
It's not possible yet, unfortunately. Asus retains the locked bootloader key. We have a way to flash it (SBK I believe) but without the unlocked bootloader, we are not able to proceed further. This is unfortunate for both sides - customer and Manufacturer

[Q] a little problem with "The fourth bar" rom

Hello.
i recently flashed the "fourth bar" with the A1 kernel rom on my p7510 and while overall satisfied with it, i came across a little problem.
when i connect it using the official samsung charger to the plug while it is turned off, the tablet restarts itself, but with touch input unresponsive.
this means that it does not respond to touch, but does respond to volume and power keys. only way to make it function properly is to hold the power button for 5 seconds and quickly disconnect it. then i need to turn it off again. i find this method overly complex for simply charging my tablet. i will thank anyone that might have a solution to this problem i'm having.
Thanks in advance, E.

Power Button Weirdness

Hi Guys,
My phone's power button started behaving strangely yesterday (don't know what triggered it, didn't install any app or change setting which could cause it).
It works as EXPECTED:
1) To Turn on the phone.
2) To Turn on the Screen from Sleep Mode.
3) To reset/shutdown when pressing together with Volume Up Key.
It works Weird:
1) When Screen Is Already "On" and I want to turn the screen off by pressing it. It works as Volume UP Key :S
This started happening yesterday and as It was working fine in all other cases except the one I mentioned, I thought it would be a settings/software issue. I reset my phone with Sony Update Service but nothing changed.
Edit: I have latest stock firmware which happens to be 6.1.1.B.1.75
Did anybody have same issue? Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Rizwan
