US998 vs US998U? - LG V30 Questions & Answers

I know probably this question have been answered a lot of times before, sorry if thats case i couldnĀ“t find the answer on the forum, i just want to know whats the difference between the LG V30 US998 and the LG V30+ US998U (apart for the obviuos that will be the amount of storage memory 64 vs 128), i wanted to know if everything that is applicable for the US998 is applicable to the US998U... Thanks in advance!

No difference except increased internal memory. It's also framed as V30 vs V30+. Even though we tend to call all V30 variants as "V30", technically the V30 is the 64GB model while the V30+ is 128GB. For the US998, then the two model names are : US998 and US998U.
T-mobile H932 has the same: H932 (64GB) vs H932U (128GB).
There's also a US998R -- which is more RAM, in addition to 128GB internal memory. US998R = 128GB internal memory with 6GB RAM. It was sold as the V30S.
Thus, for US998 variants:
* V30 = US998 = 64GB internal memory, 4GB RAM
* V30+ = US998U - 128 GB internal memory, 4GB RAM
* V30S = US998R = 128GB internal memory, 6GB RAM
All these run the same firmware, have same bootloader unlock, root procedures, etc.

Pre-sale question & advice

Thinking about picking up a LG V30(+) on ebay (or simular) to replace my dying S7 Active (by far and away my favorite hardware and form factor, just sick and tired Samsung software and of lack of development).
Two questions:
1. I am on AT&T (may move to Cricket)...would any models be recommended over others (e.g. international vs. US)?
2. I have seen a lot LS998 converted to US998...any thoughts on this and should it be avoided?
2a) If so, how can you tell want the original model was if a seller sales a LS998 as a US998?

For AT&T, use H931 V30 (AT&T) or US998 V30/V30+/V39S (open market). I have US998 V30/V30+ on AT&T, as does six relatives/friends. Half of those were LS998 converted to US998; the others are "original" US998.
Are you interested in bootloader unlock and root?
H931 can be rooted, but cannot boot AOSP ROMs for some reason. But LS998 converted to US998 can... IF you want bootloader unlock and root, you would have to convert H931 to US998 anyway, to get fastboot flash commands.
With Frankenstein, you can convert any North American variant to any other -- EXCEPT for T-Mobile H932.
The only issue -- and it's quite minor -- is for some carriers for you to use converted LS998 to US998, you may need an already-activated SIM card. If you try to explain it was formerly a Sprint phone but is now carrier unlocked US998, you'll just confuse them. My brother in law went to AT&T store with his LS998/US998 and had them transfer everything over from old HTC phone. But he had already stuck in his AT&tT SIM card, so they couldn't tell him it wouldn't work. It was already working.
If that concerns you in any way, then get "original" US998.

Holidays coming up. Here's THREE great deals on 64GB V30/128GB V30+ on eBay below. You always need a spare! Also, very likely eBay will suddenly throw out one of their site-wide 15%-20% off coupons around Black Friday or Cyber Monday? I'm just guessing. They tend to do that around various holidays. A bunch of us bought "mint" V30+ for ADDITIONAL 20% off "Buy It Now" price during Father's Day week.
* LG V30 LS998- 128GB - Titan Black (Sprint) Smartphone A Mint - $299
I've bought from that guy several times or had others buy from him. Just make sure you get the "mint" one. Use Frankenstein to convert to US998.
OR if you want BRAND NEW IN BOX -- with 2-year LG warranty:
* BRAND NEW IN BOX - LG V30 US998 64GB US Cellular Smartphone-Silver - $299
Same price as the "mint" V30 but it's NEW and already US998...
* BRAND NEW IN BOX. Ignore that the listing title says "mint" -- the listing itself makes clear it's brand new AND the two users above bought THREE of these new V30 and can verify it's BRAND NEW and eligible for 2-year LG warranty. I've re-written the listing title above to be what it SHOULD say.
* Also ignore the statement it's for "U.S. Cellular only". It's a genuine, new US998 V30. Seems to be U.S. Cellular overstock, but we all know all US998 are carrier unlocked. The ONLY difference between the B&H Photo "open market" US998 and the U.S. Cellular US998 was the "open market" was eligible for OFFICIAL bootloader unlock. We don't need that with WTF. This thread has a MUCH simpler bootloader unlock for US998 than the OFFICIAL LG bootloader unlock (which I did for one of my V30). Many, many people have bought U.S. Cellular US998 here in this forum and know they are carrier unlocked. That's just leftover language from OTHER U.S. Cellular phones they sell.
UPDATE: Be careful with this one below! Then sent me a V30 in V30+ box! They said they were sorry and gave me a refund, but be very warm!
* BRAND NEW IN BOX *SEALED* LG V30+ US998 128GB 6.0" 4G LTE Smartphone - $378
Different seller, with choice of silver or black V30+... Just the 128GB version for a little more money, and Brand New In Box if that matters to you.
I just bought this last one because I need another. I've given my spare ones away to relatives. In that listing, ignore the statement "AT&T/T-mobile" and later they say "U.S. Cellular only" (which totally contradicts the AT&T and T-mobile part). It's a genuine carrier unlocked US998 V30+ -- and brand new.. Seems to be U.S. Cellular overstock, but we all know US998 is carrier unlocked.

Lg v30 h930d?

Not much information on this model. Does it have the same bands as H930DS? Particularly, does it support LTE bands 2, 4, 12 and TD-LTE bands 38, 39, 40, 41?

H930D is the same as the H930DS but only 64GB instead if 128GB. It's sold in middle east countries, to my knowledge. I remember someone from Dubai talking about it in one of the threads.
Yeah, there's a few minor variants out there, like the H932PR (Puerto Rico), which is actually compatible with Frankenstein and WTF -- while the T-mobile U.S. H932 is not.

I think it supports the same frequencies as the V30

Sorry, you're very wrong. Please read my post right above yours.
2017 H930D is dual-SIM 64GB V30 with 4GB RAM.
So, no, the H930D is NOT the V30S. The 2018 "V30S" is a special-release US998 V30+ (128Gb) with 6GB RAM -- a.k.a. US998R. Also, there are NO dual-SIM V30S.
All other V30+ -- which includes H930DS (dual-SIM) -- are 128GB with 4GB RAM. The H930DS is a 128GB V30+ but with dual sim capability.
The H930D is also dual SIM -- like the HD930DS -- but only has 64GB storage and of course has 4GB RAM.
The H930D is just like the H930DS, but only 64GB storage. It's a 64GB V30. H930D is not 128GB V30+ and certainly NOT V30S (128GB internal storage, 6GB RAM)

"V30" has many variants, many different frequency sets. Saying it "supports the same frequencies" as V30 makes no sense. For example H931, H933, H930, VS996 are all 64GB LG V30, yet have different frequency sets.
The H930D actually has the same frequency set as the H939DS.

Hi there,
I've just bought a new "H930D" that I would like to root. I'm trying to follow the instructions of the guide "WTF...! LG V30,V30+,V30S (MOST VARIANTS)" but my model is not listed, shall I follow those instructions as I had a "H930DS"? Then, which stock rom shall I flash to unlock the bootloader, etc...?
Thanks in advance,
David.

First, to be clear, we are talking about the V30S -- not the H930D. The thread title may confuse people.
Second, the U.S. version of the V30S -- the US998R -- was only sold for a few months by B&H Photo. It's basically a 128GB V30+ with 6GB RAM. Other than 6GB RAM vs 4GB, there was no other difference once all the other V30/V30+ were updated to ThinQ software with Oreo (April/May 2018). By that time you could get "mint" V30+ for $300 on eBay vs $900 for a newV30S?
B&H Photo stopped selling it after Thanksgiving 2018, although now yes you can get them on eBay. There are people on here who have them, and yeah I wouldn't mind getting one... but not at the original price difference.
Third, there are Korean variant V30S, but right now I forget the model numbers. @SGCMarkus informed me of them. I could only find the US998R at first. However, like the other Korean variants those would be a little harder to root.

Interesting. I imagine the 6gb of ram probably wouldn't be noticeable to most people anyway. Now that you can get a regular v30 for the sub $150 range, spending $450 on a v30s seems silly.
Sorry to thread hijack

Differences between V30 and V35

Hi,
Can anyone tell me the differences between the V30 and the V35 as far as installing ROMs and such? There is a thread for the V35 but its pretty bare. Do all the installation procedures and work the same on both?
V30: a only, SD835
V35: A/B (recovery is in boot partition, slots, and so), SD845

Just to be clear, you do know V30 and V35 are completely different phone series? Custom ROMs for V30 (Joan) will not work on V35 (JudyP).
LG V35 (JudyP), G8 (JudyN) and V40 (JudyPN) with LG "Judy" internal code names and Snapdragon 845 are all more similar to each other than to V30/V30+/V30S (Joan).
Now you need TWRP and a V35 ROM to install.

V30/V30+/V30S are all the same phone (JOAN), just with different options for internal storage and RAM. They all run the same firmware, same mods, same ROMs. This is why the official V30S forum is dead, because all V30S users are here. THIS is the V30S forum.

Drop the "ThinQ" part. Every V30/V30+/V30S on Oreo or later is ThinQ. No one actually uses that word.
Back when the late 2017 V30/V30+ Snapdragon 835 was still on Nougat, LG introduced the V30S in early 2018 with Oreo software and AI cam -- calling it "ThinQ" -- and trying to pretend it was a totally different phone to compete with the new Galaxy S8/S8+ which had Snapdragon 845.
It wasn't a totally different phone. It was merely a V30+ (128GB) with 6GB RAM, instead of 4GB. It was still a "Joan" phone.
When all the other V30/V30+ got Oreo, they also received this "ThinQ" AI cam. And LG grudgingly admitted all V30 would become "ThinQ" (stupid name no one uses) once they all got Oreo -- while they were still trying to sell this "new" V30S.
For the US998, all the V30/V30+/V30S all use the exact same KDZ firmware.
The only issue with US998 V30S is it's hard to find and when you can, it's too expensive for what you are buying. Most people just buy V30+.

Is there any real difference between the V30 and V30+

I've been looking into getting a V30 or V30+ but most places online don't really show the definite differences between the two. As far as I know, it's only in the amount of base storage, with the former having 64 GB and the latter having 128 GB. There are also conflicting reports of different RAM amounts, 4 GB vs 6. I'd just like a clear answer if any knowledgeable soul has one.
Thanks
64 vs 128 GB internal storage is the only difference between V30 and V30+.
There is another rare and precious V30S model which also has 6GB RAM. You can find it in the used market at outrageous prices.
Yeah the only difference is that v30+ has double the storage
Also some v30+ variants have dual sim option

Some 64 variants also have dual SIM option, the H930D for instance.
The only difference between V30 and V30+ is the "plus" means more internal memory. Plus phones also came with free earbuds, which weren't that great. But you won't find those on the used phone market.

NO. Did you not read my reply just above yours? Which I just posted this morning? The "plus" in V30+ has NOTHING to do with dual SIM capability. Dual SIM capability is also found in 64GB V30.
Most V30+ variants do NOT have dual SIM capability. Dual SIM capability depends on the region where variant was sold and that feature came in some 64GB V30 and 128 V30+.
None of these 128GB V30+:
* LS998U,
* US998U (or 6GB RAM 128GB US99R),
* H932U,
* H930G
have dual SIM capability. Whereas the 64GB H930D does have dual SIM.

H930DS is one V30+ which has dual SIM capability. But most don't.
None of the North American V30+ variants have dual SIM because that's not how we use our phones. Neither does the European V30+ (H930G).
Not sure about the Korean carrier variants...

Try AliExpress
Though you shouldn't spend more than 150-200$ on a v30 in my opinion now.
eBay and Amazon also have H930DS. Any "new" H930DS claim I would take with grain of salt. It would be "refurbished" at best. Maybe "new" condition but not new from LG factory.
Be very careful with internal memory on these refurbished phones.
Many refurbishers/dealers are re-assembling phones from other parts. For instance, taking B&O branded backs and putting them on US998 V30. B&O branded V30 was sold in Asian countries, not U.S. I got an alleged new US998 V30+ (128GB) that only had 64GB internal memory and had B&O back. I returned it and got a refund. Yes, it looked "new" -- with sticker and was in a V30+ box, but it was obviously a fake.

hi & tanks ChazzMatt
Hence my question here, I want to be extra cautious and really buy a brand new phone (they are still expensive here in Europe and you cannot find the 128 Go version)
What do you think of these offers:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SEALED-LG-V30-H930DS-128G-6-0-4G-LTE-GLOBAL-UNLOCKED-Smartphone-Black/143151786694?epid=597187011&hash=item215482eac6:g:K~oAAOSwCXRcd4gY
(told me they cannot ship to Europe because of COVID)
or

To be honest I was considering my options; my criteria:
1) can run Lineage OS (from 16 )
2) QuadDAC
3) Device memory (128 Go internal and at least 4 Go RAM)
4) SD card slot
I even considered the LG G8 ThinQ for myself and passing my H930DS down to my son but there's no Lineage currently running on the G8 (as I'm posting this I just realised unlock had just been achieved on the G8)
