Does the Tab S6 have the same ability as the Note 10? Specifically I am asking if you can plug it in to any PC and launch Dex and LoD. Has anyone tried this yet? I am not sure if the companion app has been released officially yet, but, if you have it would you mind trying?
Any and all information is welcome.
Thanks
Edit:
This is a future question.
Not working sadly. I hope they enable it
I can only agree
I've just found this out today too
Shame on Samsung for touting Dex as one of the S6's selling points but not fully allowing the service due to the USB drivers needing updating
This is killing me I would really need that option for working purposes. I have just tested and Dex is not working as shown for the Note series...

Mind expanding on that.
I hope that Samsung extends this DeX Desktop app to work with the Tab S6 too.
And, I would also like the ability to have multiple DeX desktops instead of just the one single DeX desktop on my Tab S6. Like for example, a simple swipe to the left in DeX mode and I have another blank DeX desktop that I can deposit whatever applications I choose to deposit on it.

Hi folks. I don't know if you are still on the lookout for Dex from the Tab S6 to your pc, laptop and e.t.c. From my standpoint, we still have to wait a lot for Samsung to enable this function for us. Right now it's a selling point for the Tab S7 and S7+. So I don't think this greedy lot will release it anytime soon. Anyways, I have been using the following software as alternatives for a while now, and the two are very good. Make your pick:
Github
AnLink
Besides if you happen to stumble across custom ROMs for the Tab S6 please let me know. Take care

Ok heres the dilemma. - Please can you check my though process here......
Ultimately its a Galaxy Tab vs Nexus 10 question but before you all yawn, for the purpose of this comparison, lets ignore which tablet is better in every respect except sending the screen to a TV in the room.
I'm figuring out a solution for a company with 5 meeting rooms in new premises. They have all their content on Google Mail / Drive and want to present to customers or have internal meetings and look up mails / watch Youtube videos / have video conference meetings on Hangout / Skype. They want to 'upgrade' from a desktop PC linked to a wall mounted TV. They want to buy cheap LCD TVs. The rooms all have a wall mounted power socket and ethernet port and wifi in the room. All directors have Samsung Galaxy 3S phones and all staff are being encouraged to move to this phone.
[I started by buying and testing one of those mini-android HDMI sticks but there are loads of security issues. This is a non starter. The Apps administrator has banned these devices. I can detail the security issue in another post if anyone wants to know.]
I have settled on a tablet solution. Its portable, secure and cheap.
Here is the problem...
If I go with Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 then I get Allshare Cast. This means with a cheap dongle available now, I can retrofit a cheap TV and get pretty good screen share.
If I go with Nexus 10 I get Android 4.2 with multiple share, and Miracast but I am worried Miracast is gonna be like WiFi N where its not really available for another year or so. I cant find a dongle that is actually for sale and I saw a review on the Nexus 10 which said that Miracast is not on the device even though the OS support it.
I was wondering if I could get 'Allshare Cast' working on the Nexus as a stopgap until Miracast works?
Alternatively, I get the Galaxy tab now and then upgrade to Jellybean 4.2 in due course?
Last question... Will Samsung Galaxy 3S phone be able to send to Miracast screens via the Allshare Cast function. (will Miracast support All Share cast)?

This Galaxy Tab 10.1 (first gen) does not have Allshare Cast and will not be getting Jellybean. Need to ask your question in the right forum.
I was wondering if anyone is using the N9 for presentations like PowerPoint? I have found that the N9 does not support Mircast or hardwire connections to projectors and I am completely taken back by this. I would never have expected this from Google, especially since they marked the N9 as a productivity tool.
I was using my Samsung Note 10.1 but it is stuck on 4.1.4 or something like that I have not rooted obviously. But it casts to Mircast and it own Samsung cast system. The problem is that it can not take advantage of the new PPT apps like the upgrade Polaris. You need at least 4.2.
So now I have a great device that can use the office apps (the real office is come soon for free) and I can not project.
Anyone have some uplifting thoughts on this?
dave
do a search for "Chromecast without WiFi" I could swear I read something recently that will let you cast directly to the CC. also.. you could consider one of the travel router options that let you have your own local firewalled WiFi setups/repeaters.. run about 40$. I'm already looking into them and will report back what I find.

I actually put in a couple of chromecasts to the TV screens at work for this purpose. wish google came up with an offline feature for stuff like this.
*** For kernel developers only! *** Users please read post #2 ***
One of the coolest features of the new Samsung flagships is the Dex desktop, which transforms our phone in a basic desktop. The only annoyance is that it works only with the official Dex dock, which is too expensive (retails at $100-150).
After some kernel hacking we found a way in the S8 forum to disable the check for the Dex dock. Now our phones display the Dex desktop with any USB-C to HDMI adapter!
So here we bring you the kernel patch to enable the Dex desktop on any HDMI adapter! With love from the S8/S8+ development team!
Download it here!
Note that I don't own the Note 8 so I couldn't test this patch. However looking at the sources, this part didn't change from the S8 kernel so normally there's no need for additional modifications. I still release it as UNTESTED, and I'm waiting for feedback.
I repeat: this is for kernel developers, not for normal users. This patch has to be integrated in a custom kernel and flashed on a rooted phone.
So NO, you can't have it before there'll be custom kernels for the Note8. And NO, you can't have it if you don't want to root your phone!
Credits go to @karatekid430 and @kbarni
Some personal notes at the end: I think the Dex desktop won't do miracles at it's actual state, but it gives you a pocket-sized chromebook-level computer. It won't be a workhorse, but for simple tasks at home or while traveling (browsing, email, videos, music, text processing) it's perfectly ok.
I prefer to use a multiport adapter which can be bought on ebay for less than $10, which provides HDMI and USB output as well as a USB-C charging port. Here you can see it in action: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73780850&postcount=878
I think this solution has lots of advantages over the official dock:
- It's more compact for traveling
- It doesn't block the phone's speaker and the jack port
- It works with any charger
- It's 10x cheaper than the official dock.
For users: If you want thus feature, it's included in the Notorious kernel and IronKernel.
Thanks for making the patch, @kbarni - I might be good at code and logic, but I am not good with practical skills like Git.
My latest thoughts would be to 3D print a case and embed an adapter inside the case, which connects to the USB-C port and gives all of the extra ports from the sides of the case. It would be chunky, but convenient.
I am getting a Galaxy Note 8 (Exynos) but will not be rooting - if you want this for your Note 8, I can assist in you compiling a kernel with it, or you can wait for somebody to apply the patch into a maintained custom kernel.
Wow, I didn't know someone is actually providing the resources (to Android kernel devs) to allow this to be done with just a regular USB C to multi adapter (with HDMI).
Wait... actually, I can imagine that a mod like this could theoretically allow someone to make a DeX laptop without taking apart the official dock.
(Edit: I also agree with the advantages you stated at the end of your post. It reminds me of the Switch dock mods, but with less hassle and wasted plastic.)
Actually, I just feel like replying because, here in Singapore, a lot of DeX docks were given out with Galaxy Note8 pre-orders (along with coupons for discounts on a Samsung curved monitor and Microsoft wireless combo), so they turn up on the local classifieds for anywhere between S$50 to S$150. After reading this post, I'm clued as to the fact that the DeX Dock pre-order bonus isn't in all countries, but at least it was here. I can post a screenshot of the classifieds search page if you want.
I want this! Or a cheap DeX[emoji16]

Then you are at the wrong place, mate! This forum is about custom roms and kernels.
Anyway, you have three choices to use Dex:
- buy the official dock
- buy an unofficial but Dex compatible adapter (check the other Dex related forums)
- install a patched kernel, like Notorious and use any adapter.
I know just checking out the phone for any issues. Another week and I'll be Enlightened with all the mods

No link required. Just connect your Note 8 to continuum, power to the dock, HDMI between dock n monitor n you are good to go.
And this all with stock kernel. I'll flash the mod kernel in few days n will give you results for the same too.
Is anyone using this patch and then using a wireless charger when using desktop mode? How hot does the phone get?
Yep. On the S8 forum some users tested Dex with a patched kernel and wireless charging works.
Is there a way to manually patch the kernel while the system is running? I've got a snapdragon variant and now that we have root, it would be nice to be able to modify a system file to enable DEX mode on a generic hdmi hub.
Thanks!

No. Patching the kernel means modifying the source code, recompile, package and flash the new kernel from TWRP.

I understand this. In Linux you can modify certain kernel components during runtime. Android runs on a Linux kernel. Therefore certain kernel configurations and modules can be modified while running.
I read through the patch and it looks like there's an alternate dock driver used. I'm wondering if instead, we could edit the one already in use while rooted, then reboot to make the modified driver take effect.
On a snapdragon note variant, we don't have an unlocked bootloader and therefore can't flash a kernel. I'm just looking for a work around either through ADB or using a terminal on the rooted device itself.
I do remember pushing files directly on a rooted device itself with a local terminal using "dd if= / of=". I doubt this is impossible for something like this, but I'm not that familiar with android itself as it's been a while since I've tinkered under the hood.
Looks like it's time to start tinkering again....

Yes, I know that unfortunately you can't flash a new kernel on Snapdragon N8.
Indeed, we patched the Displayport and CCIC drivers, to bypass checking for the Dex dock product ID.
While in Linux you can have some kernel modules in separate files (*.ko), the Android kernel is built in a single image file which is copied to the boot partition. So you can't switch easily the kernel modules.
Anyway, I'm not a kernel expert, so maybe it can be hacked, I just won't be able to help you (except from providing the patch file).
With the Snapdragon Note8 the safest bet is to buy a cheaper Dex-compatible third party adaptor from Amazon or Alibaba (SMOS, Goodock, CF003 etc...).
I have tried several times to connect smart view to my TV with both my new Galaxy note 8 as well as my wife's. It appears Samsung has put a block on it so true mirroring is no longer possible but selected files can be used through Samsung connect or other 3rd party apps.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to get this to work properly as my older devices do?

Wow that actually worked!
Thanks for the info.
I appreciate your input but FHD+ is my default setting for my display And that's what I keep it on unless I'm using VR gear.
I was on the phone with a Samsung representative for 45 minutes and they could not figure it out. She said I should have true Screen Mirroring but no matter what we tried it would not work unless we used a 3rd party app . And then it's not true mirroring , it's just selected media share.

Try removing the 3rd party casting apps. I had AllCast installed on my S8+ and that turned out to be the problem.
Been there, done that.
I removed all 3rd party apps till there was nothing left but to hit the mirroring button in the drop down menu and this did not help
were you able to find out the solution to your problem? I am facing the same problem and have tried the solutions mentioned in this thread. It does not work for me . Any help is appreciated.
Samsung givith and takith away.
Samsung is becoming more like apple everyday with proprietary software. My older Samsung devices work on everything. The Note 8 and I would assume the same would be for the S8 and S8 Plus will only do true screen mirroring with Samsung devices. I remembered that my Blu-ray player which is Samsung is also Wireless and will do mirroring and it worked just fine. Then I tried it on a flat panel 2017 Samsung TV and again it worked just fine but go to any other brand or older TV and you have to use third-party software which does not do true screen mirroring. In your settings on any older phone you will have a setting for mirroring in the Advanced connections. But if you look in the settings for the Note 8 the only mirroring setting you find is for a USB connection to your car. Samsung is more and more making it impossible to connect to anything easily but their own devices.

But in my case I own a series 6 samsung led f6400 and still I am not able to connect. The connection happens for a moment and then the screen mirroring terminates. Am I missing any setting?
It works just fine with my note 8 and Samsung TV.
Same problem.
I had this exact same problem. The solution was stupidly simple. When I hit "smart view" all the devices show up. Tapping on the device I want does not work. I actually had to hold down on the device I wanted for a second, and it immediately connected.
It worked totally fine on FHD+ though, it must be a bug. Hold it on WQHD+.
Thank You!
Yes, that worked. Thank you. I wasn't sure exactly what you meant when you said you have to hold it down but it's long hold. If you long hold the icon on the phone when selecting the Samsung smart TV, then in my case I got a request for a validation code which appeared on my TV. It worked. I have the same problem with the Galaxy note 8, and the Galaxy S8. This is definitely a bug, because it actually said it was connected. But then it would time out and the Screen Mirroring on the TV would stop. So glad you came up with the solution. Thanks for sharing with us
If you send a video from notes 8 to the Smart Tv to you is it fluid? To me it jams and then it takes back.

This is the whole reason, scratch that, one of the big reasons (among so many) why the note 8 will be the last Samsung device that I purchase. I have a Galaxy S5 that screen mirrors with audio to any TV. I also have a Galaxy Grand Prime, which is a mid level device, rooted with oreo on it and it screen mirrors just fine.
This is now why I have just firmly decided why I'm gonna root this device and put oreo or pie on it, chalk the rest all up to experience and call it a day. Screw the Samsung software. The next device will be a one plus or Pixel or lastly maybe Motorola. Unbranded and boot loader unlockable. Never again will I deal with a company that wants to double their prices on devices in just two years till they are now $1000 and then eliminate so many features that the hardware is more than capable of thus making your device half as appealing as other flagship devices. Handcuff you and locking the boot loader up tight so you can't do what you want to do with your device you spent a $1000 on. That is all just discussing to me. Big business wanting you to pay more more astronomical dollars all the while wanting to control you and your device more and more. So long, and nice knowing you Samsung but I never really believed in or bought into your marketing and business model.

I actually like Samsung Electronics but I agree with you here. This is my last phone from Samsung because I don't like the fact that it's locked down like that.. What also pisses me off is the fact that Samsung is USING Android as their operating system and Android is OPEN SOURCE software and Samsung shouldn't be taking an open source software and then locking it down! That's like buying a car and then taking the name of it off and putting your own brand name on it and that's not right at all.
One of my favorite features of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra (and I'm sure it's not restricted to this particular model) is to connect to my work shop PC wirelessly via Dex and be able to transfer files, check/reply to texts, and a few other things. I've come across many videos and articles showing how to connect as mirror or as second monitor or whatever, but I cannot find anything that explains how to connect the Galaxy Tab S7 to PC in the same sense as with Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. I hope my question makes sense.
Basically: Is it possible to connect the Galaxy Tab S7 to the PC wirelessly through Dex the same way you can with with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra? Not as mirror or second monitor. If anyone has any thoughts on this, Id deeply appreciate your time and feedback.
To my knowledge DeX doesn't work like it does on the Note phones. It won't start DeX on your PC like your phone does.
Fair enough. Thank you for your feedback. I wonder why they'd design it this way.
A Tab S7 or S7+ using DeX via a PC would be redundant. The Tab S7/S7+ with a keyboard cover is essentially a laptop in its own right.
