Sprint version SM-G960U - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a S9 SM-G960U (Sprint) that began to have unusually high battery drain a couple weeks ago. It was a 3 or 4 day issue and one evening it then rebooted out of the blue, restarted OK and was fine. Then, about 15 minutes later rebooted again and got stuck at the S9 Android screen, now just restarts continuously. I cant enter any recovery mode, ect...only the download screen. I have let the battery drain, used Odin to reinstall current SW version, as it refuses to allow a rollback to original version, saying SW revision mismatch on the screen I believe....
I've tried Odin patched, and 3.12.7, but still can only install current or more recent uploads of the software, but no matter what, after the successful install using Odin, it restarts into the same loop....never getting to the SAMSUNG screen. In the threads I have seen where this issue has been successfully resolved, it seems like the factory software needs installed, but I can not get it to allow me to do this....
Any ideas beyond what I have tried?

[Q] Stock S III boot loop - SIM?

My stock, never-rooted GT-I9300 (4.1.2, I9300BWELK1, JZO54K.I9300XXEMC2) is plagued by boot loop problems. It first started about 3 months ago, where the blue charge LED would suddenly come on and the phone would not wake from sleep. I pulled the battery, then when it was turned on it showed the initial S III logo, then the O2 logo followed by the glowing Samsung logo. Then repeated from the O2 logo endlessly. I pulled the battery again, then the next morning restarted it without the SIM or SD card in, and it had done a partial factory reset - i.e. lots of phone contacts were there with the texts, but all the settings had reverted to default. Later that day while on charge the same thing happened again, and I sent it away to O2 for repair.
When it returned, the same thing happened 6 weeks later although this time it was on when it froze and went straight to the O2/blue LED stage. Another repair (I'm fairly sure these 'repairs' were just factory resets...), and 6 weeks later exactly the same. Back to the O2 shop for another repair.
This time they replaced the 'main board' and when it came back it had a different Wi-Fi MAC address. This time only 6 days elapsed before the same fault arose again, and finally I was eligible for a replacement handset. This lasted 2 days before a boot loop condition occurred again! This time, being sure it couldn't be a hardware fault I tried my own /data and /cache wipe, which worked. I skipped all but the must-have apps, and I thought this was going to be stable but once more this past weekend the boot loop happened again (I've got my restoration procedure down to about 15 minutes thanks to the practice!)
I don't know what could be causing this and I'm fed up with resetting my phone. Are all S IIIs this unstable? I've never had a phone that required a factory reset within 18 months! When it is in the boot loop, I can access recovery and download modes, but safe-mode start-up has no effect.
The last remaining candidates I can think of are a problem with my SIM card, or a defect with my SD card... or an app. Can anyone suggest the best way to troubleshoot this? I'd really really rather not have to skip importing my settings as I have among other things many SSIDs I don't easily have access to re-create.

Yes, 4.1.2. I don't recall this behaviour before I got the OTA update from 4.1.1 though

No, not all S3 owners experience this, a factory reset solves most of these issues however, if it doesn't, a trip to the Samsung service center will help.
I'd say it's probably a dodgy app, or some kind of unstable firmware update for your region/carrier, since hardware replacements didn't help with it.

Hmm. Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure I know anyone else with and S III on O2-UK but it seems to be news to O2, so I assumed it must be fairly rare.
I'm not sure about dodgy apps; testing them one app at a time isn't really feasible as it can take up to 6 or 7 weeks to fail judging by past performance. Are there any logs or similar that I can pull out somehow in the event of a boot loop? I've seen about logcats but I am not sure if this would be of use

Everything to carries is "news".
I can't help with logs and whatnot, so I'll leave that to someone else.
You can always flash and downgrade to the older firmware that didn't give you a problem, if the problem persists, it is indeed an app.
Even when rooted, informative logs are nigh on impossible to get

That doesn't fill me with confidence!
Thanks again for the replies. I'm not wild about downgrading. I liked the improvements! Is it possible to downgrade in a carrier supported way? Retaining warranty compliant has been rather useful in the past few months!

You can flash any official via odin.

Well late Friday night it did it again. Not sure when exactly as I was asleep. Woke up in the middle of the night and went to check the time, Looked at my phone to find the blue LED on when it should have been red for charging or green for fully charged, and it was very hot - wouldn't turn on either. Pulled the battery but it kust went into the loop. I was away from home so I couldn't do any troubleshooting and had no choice but to wipe.
This time I didn't restore settings and the only apps I installed were SMS Backup & Restore and Puzzle Alarm (I know this isn't the culprit as I only started using it this week!). Gone are all my precious wifi SSIDs but otherwise I'm not sure I've noticed the difference.
So I'm now not connected to my work wifi, nor have I set up my work email or Lync - two of the things I use my phone for must after Facebook which I've also not reinstalled. Facebook mobile web is really hard to use by comparison.
By chance I popped into the O2 shop later that day and had the fortune to bump into a Samsung rep who had never heard of this and agreed that I was unfortunate to have these problems (how touching!) and suggested I speak directly to Samsung support rather than O2 which I will do this week. I will also contact O2 about a replacement SIM and look into replacing the SD too.
This is really silly. I'm not keen on downgrading the software because the first thing either Samsung or O2 will do is upgrade it again. Frankly at this point I'm fed up with the whole thing but I've got a year left on the contract and even a pretty much new handset like mine won't fetch enough.

Germany?
Hi Dan (or whoever else reads this). Love the ROM! It's amazing. Do you know if it will work in Germany? I went to Mexico a few months ago, and the latest build at the time would not get reception anywhere. Flashing a TW ROM solved the problem, but I would much rather use yours.
Thanks!

Well in case anyone is curious, this ROM gives me great cell service (full signal on Vodaphone.de) but no data in Munich. I tried airplane mode, disabling/enabling data roaming several times and setting the network mode to GSM preferred, but no luck. Flashing the latest release of Hyperdrive ROM allowed me to use data. Oh well.

Viper Audio Working?
Does anyone else use Viper Audio with this rom? I find that the audio driver frequently stops processing when I stop playing music and then come back and play again. It will start processing again if I reboot the phone or even kill the Viper gui process. I've tried installing it as a user or system app but hasn't seemed to matter. Anyway, just curious if anyone else was having the same kind of results.
Hi everyone, hoping you all can help me with a problem I'm having with my phone. First, some specs:
ROM: Danvdh GPE 9/30
I am one of those lucky MDK users, I got the phone in May 2013 and rooted early
I had been running the NC5 modem for a while now with no issue. The problem started after I flashed the NG6 modem (from Surge1223's thread) in TWRP. Just fyi, here are the steps I took to flash the modem. Within TWRP, I flashed the zip file, cleared Dalvik/cache, then rebooted.
Almost immediately I started getting random reboots. It rebooted twice, then seemed to settle down, so I decided to wait a day or so to see what my phone would do. Sadly enough, it started rebooting again, so I gave up last night and reflashed the NC5 modem in TWRP using the same method as before. The phone was fine after that, until this afternoon. About an hour ago, my phone froze, and rebooted, but the screen cut off at the Samsung custom padlock boot screen. It seems to be off at this point, but I can't power on the phone without pulling the battery. After pulling and replacing the battery, the phone powers on by itself, but again cuts off at the Samsung boot screen, about 3-4 seconds into the boot process. I've tried booting into TWRP and download mode, with the screen turning off and the device seemingly freezing after 3-4 seconds. I'm at a loss as to what to do at this point.
I'm at work right now, but when I get home, I will see if Odin3 can make some sort of contact with the phone. Any help in the meantime would be greatly appreciated!
Sounds like you may have a bad dl. Re download. Turn phone off. Then boot into TWRP and reflash the modem zip. Not the non-halos.zip.

I would love to, but I can't.
I put a video up on Youtube showing what the phone is doing right now. I don't have 10 posts yet, so I can't post links, but if you go to youtube.com then add "/watch?v=3ey5xD9LodY" at the end of the URL, you can see what the phone is doing.
It is the only thing the phone will do. I've tried doing a hard reset by holding the power button, but nothing happens. All I can do is pull the battery and start this process again. If I hold the correct button combos, I can begin to boot into TWRP or download mode, but the phone cuts off/freezes like clockwork after 3 seconds.
I tried to get Odin3 to recognize the phone, but my desktop doesn't recognize that anything is plugged in when I connect my phone to it, so Odin3 by extension doesn't see anything.
Did you install the Samsung apps on your computer? You need them for the computer to recognize your phone.
To hard boot into recovery you need to hold power button and volume up at the same time, then let go of power button once blue writing appears on upper corner of phone.
Sent from my Xoom Wifi using Tapatalk
I'm sure I have. I've been able to send adb commands to the phone in the past. Now however, my PC doesn't even see that a device has been connected to it (nothing shows up in the device manager, not even an unrecognized device).
The phone will no longer charge when I plug it into an AC adapter either (or at least the LED no longer lights up indicating it's charging).
I have tried booting into recovery several times. Each time, it will begin to boot into TWRP, the blue text, "RECOVERY BOOTING...", will display, then immediately afterwards, the screen will cut off and the phone will freeze, just like in the Youtube video I posted.
I'm afraid the thing is bricked...
So, I was talking to a friend about what's been going on with my phone. During the conversation, I started goofing around and smacking the back of the phone like 4-year-old me would an NES to try and make it work (ah, good times...). Believe it or not (and I did not touch the power button while doing this), the phone powered up and successfully booted!!!
It showed only 2% battery life, so I connected it to the AC adapter, but then a few seconds later the phone died again.
This occurrence leads me to believe there is something wrong with the battery, and leads me to another question. Can the S4 (or any other smartphone) run solely on USB power?
My roommate has a Galaxy SIII, I read the SIII battery can be used in the S4, so I will test the phone out with his battery when he gets back tomorrow, and update you then.

Have you tried a different USB cable/transformer? It sounds like you might just have a charging issue. Not enough juice to get it started.
Allowing a battery to cool down will give it more usable power, which as it heats back up will deplete again. This sounds like your situation... Power off for a few, restart it has enough to begin booting, then depleted again.
The phone cannot run on USB alone it needs the battery to sustain it's operation.
I have tried 3 USB cables, 2 AC adapters, and 2 PCs.
When this started on Friday, my phone was hooked up to my PC at work and showing about 50% battery, but it's possible something went wrong with the battery and it's stopped delivering any significant amount of power or accepting a charge.
So it turns out it wasn't the rom or new modem that was the problem, my battery has decided to kick the bucket. I tried my roommate's battery in my phone and it booted right up as if nothing was ever wrong! Strange that an OEM battery would just die like that, but I suppose that does happen from time to time. Thanks for the help!

Anyone received the H82011K OTA update?

I just received it yesterday at about noon. It has the 2016-07-01 security patch. I noticed after installing it my phone started lagging to a complete stop and rebooting for no reason, in somewhat of a soft loop. I factory reset it and upon restoring my apps found OperaMax to be the culprit as the rebooting issue started again once I opened it. It really sucks as I have a limited data plan and it would obviously last me much longer with OperaMax. I'm not sure who to contact about the issue (I don't think it's Opera's fault as it has worked fine before the update) so I thought I might share it here. OperaMax users be warned of the latest AT&T OTA.
I received it and haven't had any issues of course I don't use OperaMax. I also noticed we now have WIFI Calling
Sent from my LG-H820 using Tapatalk
Perhaps someone with the update can install OperaMax and verify if it causes the issue (don't worry, you should be able to uninstall it between reboots).
I installed Opera Max to see if it would freeze my phone and it did. Considering it's a vpn app maybe the security patch in the ota is what causes the phone to freeze up. Maybe contacting the app developers they can help solve the issue. Good luck!

More info
So I received the update as well. After two hours after installation my phone would reboot every 10 to 20 minutes depending on what was active on the phone. I never used opera max. Well after 8 hours of that going on, somewhere in the middle of the night it managed to reset it self so I woke up to a bright white Welcome Screen. I clicked the next arrow and it restarted and went into a boot loop. After 5 failed boots it would pull back up the welcome screen and reboot again. It did that til the battery drain today. So when I got home I plugged it in and it allowed to set it up. So I call AT&T to complain, and they said well maybe it won't do it again. It rebooted as soon as they said that. They told me I needed to talk to LG so they transferred me to LG Customer Support. They were very rude but since then it hasn't restarted. The phone is crashing because the memory is getting fully used for some reason so I would check other apps as well!

Well H82011K is pretty terrible. It's far worse than ANY nightly rom I have ever flashed so that is a testament in itself. I would think one of the apps you previously had installed before the update eventually caused the phone to go to the s#!thouse because it is a very finicky piece of "official" s#-oftware... To reproduce the issue it may be painstaking, but try reinstalling the apps you had before one by one. That may help you pinpoint which one causes the fatal conflict.
I haven't been able to try. I reset through the "recovery" and when it comes to the welcome screen it may or may not crash but when I click the next arrow and goes to wifi it crashes and restarts. It sucks that I can't find the KDZ files so that I could just flash it back to the previous version.

That is the other problem a lot of us are having is that AT&T won't release a system dump for this phone and it would seem they have been doing so quite deliberately. I would suggest banging on their proverbial door as I have myself about H82011K. Perhaps if enough of us demand a Stock KDZ/TOT they will do the right thing and release one because they know deep down that people switch carriers when they do downright evil s#!t like this.

Perhaps. My cell signal is definitely worse since the update. Before it, I generally got 3-bar strength. After H82011K, it usually wallows around 1-bar and rarely it reaches 2.

Your situation seems pretty bad, I would try replacing the battery or proceed to send the phone back to LG for service.
I'm using the G5 ATT on Cricket. My current software version is H82010h. When I try to update it, it says I have the latest. Do I have to have an ATT sim in the phone to have the update work? Does the ATT Sim have to be an active one or any old ATT Sim can grab the update?
Thanks.

Yes it has to have an active sim for AT&T OTA's because it's sent over-the-air by the carrier. It also requires wifi to download it. You can also try the LG Update Tool here http://lg-support-tool.en.lo4d.com to see if it will work.
Instructions: Download and install the*LG Mobile Support Tool on your computer. Open the*LG Mobile Support Tool software. Click*Install USB Driver. Double click your device model from the list. Help me I'm from Pakistan and not received any update "there is no any update for your phone"

A new window will open showing the download progress of the USB driver. Click*OK*when the download is complete. Connect*your device to the computer with the USB cable. Samsung Galaxy S8+ stuck on "Optimizing app 97 of 97." after newest upgrade.

Samsung Galaxy S8+ stuck on "Optimizing app 97 of 97." after newest upgrade.
Hi people.
My phone started installing the upgrade overnight, and did not boot because it got stuck somehow. So the alarm didn't wake me up, and boss was disappointed
Is it a faulty app causing this? If it is the last app, then does it mean that it is the last app I installed on the phone? It has probably been stuck for around 6 hours now.
I searched around but cannot find a solution.

I don't have this device but, your best bet is to post this question within the following Q&A thread that's specific to your device and variants.

Good Luck!

I just turned off the phone with the shutdown proceedure, which is volume down and power button for 7 sec. Then turn it back on and luckily it just booted all the way up.

For myself, the Optimizing of apps had rarely ever happened on its own and I don't recall the last time it's happened on its own either.
The only time that I ever experienced this is when/if I manually wipe the Dalvik Cache/ART via TWRP.
App Optimization is typical behavior for Firmware and some Apps that are Odexed (basically temporary files for them). Some members prefer to use Firmware/Apps that are Deodexed. This means that the Firmware/App doesn't look to an Odex file for Optimization that, in turn, doesn't require an Optimization process.
There's more to it but, this is just for you to have some basic information regarding the Optimization process that you had experienced.
It's great to see that your up and running and I wish you the best of luck!

S8+ Bootloop, Odin Fail... Is it dead? Running out of possible fixes!

Hello all,
This past Saturday my Galaxy S8+ froze up and the display showed a bunch or discolored horizontal lines, then it shut down and went into a bootloop. I know this isn't an uncommon issue but it seems this usually happens from a botched upgrade/flash attempt. I've never attempted this and was just using my phone as normal. I have read through many bootloop threads and tried many of the troubleshooting steps, but I haven't had any success.
I'm starting to wonder if there's a hardware issue now. I'm hoping someone might have a new suggestion I could try, or point out any mistakes I made in my previous troubleshooting. I'm new here, so sorry if I left out any important details below, please let me know.
Thanks for helping!
Symptoms:
Phone is in a bootloop.
On occasion it comes out of the loop and displays some new phone setup menus (since I did a factory reset), but it crashes fairly quickly (and display gets distorted again) and re-enters the bootloop. It varies how far I can get into the new setup, before it crashes, but generally it's a matter of seconds.
On occasion, it comes out of the loop and displays a "System software not authorized by AT&T" message.
Attempts to fix:
Went into recovery*mode, wiped cache. Same results on reboot.
Went into recovery*mode, factory reset device. Same results on reboot.
Odin tool (3.13.1) and flashed lastest G955USQ8DTJ1_G955UOYN8DTJ1_VZW from sammobile. Device reached 32%, stayed for a while, then rebooted and back to bootloop.
Samsung Smart Switch, but then I discovered they neutered the app and it won't recover a device anymore.
Tried iMyFone Fixppo, but it failed to find latest FW for the device.
Phone details:
S8+ (SKU: SM-G955UZKV)
Bought it reburb 2 years ago.
It has never been rooted by me, so everything is stock.
Memory was close to full, but I still think I had a few GB left.
It was on VZW when bought, but I had it unlocked so I could use on AT&T.
In downloader mode, it says "Carrier: VZW", "Current Binary: Samsung Official", "FRP Lock: On", "Warranty Void: 0x0"

Can you run graphics test from recovery mode? i guess something is overheating during boot. Can you put the device on a water/ice bag to lower the temp, and do factory reset ? as you said it displays some setup menus so its worth a shot

Seems to perform the graphics test fine. It cycles through all the graphics tests and then returns to the recovery menu.
I tossed the phone in the freezer for a few minutes and then tried a normal reboot. To my surprise it booted into the new phone setup menu, but this time it didn't crash right away. I was actually able to get through the complete setup and restore all my old apps (hooray google backups). In all, it probably worked for about 5 minutes before crashing again. I repeated the test, and verified that cooling it down does help.
So, great call! But what does that mean? Is there anyway to determine what is causing is this without a tearing it open?

Nice i guess it should be the processor thats heating.
You can find the location of the heatsink/thermal paste/process here (around 3:30 min mark)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRmY-4HKVIk&t=362s&ab_channel=JerryRigEverything
The processor seems to be located below Bixby button.
You can also try gently pressing the spot where processor is located to seat it back, but am not sure how long it may stay. if the thermal paste is dry and not in contact with processor, you have to open the device.
Or you can take it to a local repair shop for some assistance.
