I tried to rename root's .ogg files on my Samsung Note 9(Oreo) and unable to do it. I found limited information here. I can rename the .ogg files in the older Android though.. What I have tried so far from these app and failed;
1. ES explorer
2. root explorer
3. mixplorer
4. total commander
Permission for "RW" only can set on "mixploer", and "root explorer" but after tried to copy over the root folder, it prompted failed to copy. Although I can set ES exploere to "RW" mode but it fools you to believe it has rename the file but in reality it was unable to, what a screw up.. Anyone has successfully rename files in root folders?
I did not try this in "safe mode" though..
If you had Magisk rooted phone, try ExSDcardEnable module. Or can you move file to internal storage for rename?

I was tried to rename the files at internal storage but not able to. I can copied files out to ext memory card or pen drive. After that I was not able to move back to override the current file/files.
Magisk is installed but can't find "ExSDcardEnable module".. Is it in the Magisk manager?
This file ".ogg" is at "system\media\audio\xxxx.ogg" and unable to edit. Looks like the ownership of Oreo harder to make change now..

Well, at least you have remount /systen as read/write with "mount -o rw,remount /system" or in TotalCommander is easier.
Yes, it is downloadable module in Magisk Man. Latest is ExSDCard Write Access Enabler v3.5 (Sorry for bad name). The new access path for our externals SDCards: /mnt/media_rw/SDCARDNUMBER/

By running from Magisk Manager -> Plugins -> sign "+" -> choose *.zip plugin, after automatic install, reboot phone.
Or MM -> Downloads -> search for ExSDcard -> Click on ExSDcard write access enabler -> Install then reboot.

I installed the "ExSDCard Write Access Enabler" by download through the Mgisk manager's download and wonder if correct. I attached a screenshot here.
I tried to use the total commander to rename the ".ogg" files but failed after I have re-mount the R/W. I wonder if I did correctly by adding the folder as shown in the screenshot.
Did anyone successfully overwrite the files in Oreo? I run out of lucks... Not much information about this issues also.. From Jelly Bean to Marshmallow I have no problem to overwrite files(I did not try on Nougat). But Oreo, until now I still have no way to overwrite a simple file like .ogg.. :crying:

I want to over-right the framework-res.apk file to mod the battery icon but in Root explorer it says the file is read-only and when I try Android Commander it says I need root to do this. I know I have root working as titanium backup works. So how comes I can't copy over this file?
You need to mount your system patition as r/w.
Before pasting the modified framework-res.apk, click on the "mount r/w" button at the top of the Root Explorer window. Then you'll be able to overwrite it.
Don't forget to click the button again (which is now "mount r/o") to remount the system partition as read only again.

Using root eksplorer to push framework.apk is a good way to get the boot loops, so remember to check that the new framewourk.apk it is the same version you are running.

Right, it is actually very recommended to make this check even when using ADB or ODIN to push a new framework-res.apk version. I got myself into many bootloops skipping this test when I had my first Android phone

This is my first android device, and i am new to Unix-like systems.
I have tried to unlock, root & install custom rom on my phone. Used this instruction:

I always get "read only" trouble. As I understand, the problem in root access. I haven’t got it.

You need to go into the options of the file manager and enable root, and also mount system as writable. I use ES file explorer from market...its free. If it still fails my guess is you are not rooted.
I have root access, have checked with root checker basic. Have enabled root in es file explorer, still same problem.
I have made some photos, in attached files.
Did you also check the option 'mount system directory as writable' in es file explorer options

Hi,
I tried changing file permission on one of the folders where I saved my photos to read-only using "Root Browser Lite".
The following error message came up: "Changing permission was not successful. Please note that some file systems do not allow permission changes".
I tried using ES file explorer but it also failed.
Could someone please tell me how I could change the file or folder permission. I wanted to prevent the photos from being accidentally deleted by my children when I let them browse their photos..
My phone I9300 was rooted using CF Auto Root.

Get root explorer, it's much better.
Simply long press on a folder and the permissions option is there.

Don't forget to set to rw at the top of root explorer before attempting to change permissions
If you're talking about the internal memory, you can do chattr +i /data/media/[name of folder] to set the immutable bit. EDIT: You need BusyBox installed for the chattr command
This works because /storage/sdcard0 (JB's usual mountpoint for the internal eMMC) is a fake FAT32 file system Google created for compatibility; the internal eMMC can really be found at /data/media, which is of the ext4 filesystem.
For the external memory, you can try SGS3 Easy UMS and set the read only property on the folder using your computer. (I can't find mattrib for Android.) There is no guarantee that Android/Linux programs will obey the RO attribute, however.
The reason why Root Browser Lite & ES File Explorer didn't work is because they work on UNIX file permissions, while a file system formatted using FAT obviously doesn't understand them - it would expect DOS/FAT attributes. That said, though, have you already backed up the data you consider to be important?

Thank you all for your advice. The file system explanation betw FAT and ext4 fs makes sense. I have BusyBox installed.
Via Terminal Emulator, when I did "chattr -i /data/media/DCIM/Camera", I got a "permission denied".
Is there something that prevented me from this?

Image Gallary is still showing /mnt/sdcard/DCIM/Camera as "writeable".
What is the difference between two folders /data/media/DCIM/Camera and /mnt/sdcard/DCIM/Camera?

Note that I used +i in my example invocation of chattr. - removes the attribute; + sets it, which is what you want

The problem is that your system is currently in RO (Read-Only) mode.
Even if you are root, can't mess with system files if the setup is like that.
ES File Explorer works because it has an option (that DOES work) to mount the system in RW (Read-write) mode.
On my ES File Explorer Version 3.0.0 it goes like this:
Android menú button--->Tools---->Root Explorer--->Mount R/W.
Set: /system (or all of the options) to: RW----->OK.
Now, explore your files using the ES File Explorer interface on your phone and you should be able to erase every file and apk you want even if they are system files.

I'm rooted yet cannot mount system folders as r/w. I am definitely rooted (confirmed by using su command in terminal and the fact apps that require root are working) and noticed this issue when trying to install busybox pro.
It warned me that there was an existing busybox in /sbin and would remove it before trying to install in system/xbin but the installation failed.
I tried to remove busybox from /sbin but the folder would not mount as r/w in root explorer OR solid explorer.
I managed to remove the file in TWRP recovery though.
Weirdly, I've been using titanium backup to uninstall system apps without any issues.
How can I fix this? Repair permissions int wrp?
I presume you followed the same instructions as I. I am on the 621 and currently have the same issue (also rooted). But on my end it is actually worse. I cannot mount the system partition in TWRP either (I mean I can mount it but when I try to delete or move a file I get error messages), and something happened to my download manager (which basically means that for the time being I cannot download apps from Google Play or from the internet, etc). I have a good download manager apk, but when I try to install it it asks me if I want to update the existing app, and the operation fails - I have to try and find a 3rd party alternative for the time being). It is kind of a problem.
(to update, I have very limited r/w permissions in TWRP. If I get lucky I can make small changes.)

I don't think so. I tried this, and I eventually was able to view/attempt to edit file permissions inside of X-plore file explorer (don't know if it is a coincidence, but I first had that success opening X-plore in 'mount system r/w' mode after changing the i/o scheduler to cfq). Anyways, it consistently shows all 755/644 permissions, so the permissions are not being re-written upon boot from what I can gather. But if I try to edit permissions or copy files to System folders, I still got error messages to the effect of "you cannot do this,' even though it is a root file explorer and the system partition is purportedly mounted as r/w.
Try flashing this in recovery: SonyRICDefeat by dosomder.

Thank you for this. Has anyone ever tried this on the Z3TC? Mine is running smoothly enough such that I am reluctant to fix what isn't broken. It seems that early issues I had with freezes, TWRP, etc, probably had to do with my SD card and the Android media scanner.
I've tried it on the Z3TC SGP621. Thus the recommendation.

I have the exact issue in lollipop and I have tried flashing RICDefeat and I get errors.
Sorry for the Hijack :/
Use my RICDefeat from here and run it from terminal. Works only if you are rooted. Afterwards you should have r/w access.

I've installed viper4android on my mido. Everything is ok, but there is a background static sound when music is being played. According to the viper FAQ I need to delete /system/lib/soundfx/libbundlewrapper.so. What did I do:
1. Mount system as rw
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount,rw /system
2. try to rename that file
cd /system/lib/soundfx
mv libbundlewrapper.so libbudnlewrapper-2.so.bak
3. No success. Trying to create backup in a file manager and than trying to delete it. Still no luck. Changed system to ro and I'll wait for suggestions.
The file is there like I haven't done anything. The uncharted territory of the system partition still awaits for me. What I can do next to get the thing to work?

What rom do you use? Miui or los/aosp? Also do you use, magisk or super su? Plus, please tell how did u Install viper, that is through recovery or by using magisk?.

I use Official and final RR
The phone uses magisk and viper was flashed by magisk (should I remove the module and flash as non-system app?)

Still does not work. I have no idea what to do. Again.
Renaming the file does not go despite a Toast is visible "Rename Successful" and while deleting there is "Device or resource busy"

I tried. The funny part is that I can only see /system/usr. No other folder is in /system. Thats why I've posted this topic. I'm just lost.

Nope, you haven't mounted system in twrp, that's the reason you are only seeing /usr
So do this
From main menu, select "mount" and there select System, also make sure that the "system" box is checked and the box saying "mount system partition as read only" is unchecked(I've attached a screenshot for reference). Now you can easily go to /system and it should list the files and folders., And you can delete the file you want. Quote me if you need more help
