Low light - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Real Life Review

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+'s camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.

Back cameras - awesome. There's a few spots in my garden which I think are a great test case - there's a light above, and a dark shed just to the side, instead of either blowing up the dark shed or the light, it takes the picture pretty much the way my eyes see it.
Front camera - eh... it could be way better. It's not terrible, but to my eyes, the selfie camera ain't much different from my old S6. Of course there's a major difference when there's good light, but in low light tho, not so much. Hope this can be made better with an update.

Try again front cam with Gcam...
Front cam is very good (lens, hardware), but stock software is a pita for front cam which is solved with gcam, especially in low light.

Every gcam I'm trying gives me force close. Got any working apk?

I tried a working gcam, but found it to be really slow, I couldn't stand it, uninstalled, is not worth all the hassle in having other 3 separate cam apps, the version That finally worked for me, was comprised by 3 gcam apps!

It performs pretty well in good lighting conditions. Especially the beauty mode cleans all blemishes and unwanted things in our face. So we look pretty good than real.
Other then looking like a Japanse Anime character.. Without those filters i would give it a 7.5. When its dark a 4

There is a beauty slider. Set it to 3 or 5, you will get good quality of your face. Some ppl try to keep it 10 to look extremely beautiful.
I wouldn't say it's the best front facing selfie camera, but it does the job even in good lighting, not so bad at low light, but isn't great.

Thank you so much for saying that our front camera is awesome! We truly appreciate your review. Here at Honor, we truly care about our customers and their comments. Don't forget to try the "Capture smiles" mode, which takes your picture automatically when it detects a smile. You can access that setting by going to the settings within your camera app and enabling it. (ED)

Sub parts, beauty mode is bad
Does the job
I use the front cam all the time for various purposes. Quite happy with it.
I am a camera shy guy so selfies don`t matter to me. But whenever I took them, that 5MP front camera is just enough. Front camera pictures give 'painting-like' pictures when zoomed in about 75%. My rating is 6/10.
I don't take selfies that much so this is sufficient for me.

Better better better for sure. With 5mp it does the job very well. And pictures can be taken with touch in back FP scanner which is excellent and provide ease of use

Just good. Not bad.

I put together a couple low light camera comparisons. The only editing done to the original photos was cropping to get things to line up as well as I could.
First, Essential stock camera app (NMI81C) vs Essential with Google Camera port: here
Second, Essential with Google Camera port vs Nexus 6 with Stock Google Camera: here

Thx... Looks great.
Seems like the Nexus port is the best solution
really like the slider in the sample pictures! great idea. so google camera port is the way to go.
Question: Can you also take shot in 16:9 instead of 4:3
All current media viewers like any phone or TV set is 16:9 so i prefer to shoot in that screen dimension
Essential Phone camera experience is still a mixed bag. Regular pics using stock Essential app range from very good to poor depending on lighting. Much better with Google cam port but still not as good as most current flagships or even some older phones like Nexus 6P/ 5x, original Pixel or OnePlus 3T. Using the monochrome camera on this phone is a completely different story. Black and White pics look outstanding with great detail.
Trying out portrait mode for the first time today. Not too bad, I think.

For a real low light photo I'd be using a proper camera and not rely on a phone to take the photo. I have the Mate 10 and even that with its brilliant camera I don't use in real low light conditions so either way I took this photo in a pitch black room with the Essential Phone using its camera and I can't see any pixellation anywhere

I actually find that the stock app normally performs much better than GCam in mid-low light. I use GCam only in the sun.
GCam tends to try to bring out way too much detail in the image, resulting in a picture that just looks like a grainy mess.

I'll be honest, it's pretty bad, frequently off focus, poor low light, lack of stabilization, but maybe fine for the price range I guess
Redmi Note 5 is probably the better choice for photo quality
Nonetheless, I think updates might help. At least I hope

In daylight conditions pictures turns out good with good focus , saturation levels etc. But color reproduction needs work and in low light conditions noise is quite apparent. Portrait is like 7/10. Selfies turn out good after the recent update, 8.5/10.
P.S. For stabilized videos I use nokia camera app and its upto the mark .
Low-light picture quality is abominable. Zoom tears images, there is a lot of noise. Images in daylight are pretty decent. For this price range, the camera quality is justifiable (I suppose). I have a Moto G4 Plus and it takes amazing photos compared to this device. If you remove the portrait mode, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 has nothing over the Moto G4 Plus camera.
Hope to see changes in future updates.
Yes, pretty disappointed with the camera performance. I should have got the RN5 instead but since I already got this, I'll stick with it as taking pictures is not the main thing for me on this phone. Still, the quality is far off from the various paid reviews.

Don't know but it is definitely better than the original Asus camera app
Earlier the photos taken from Asus were not that great as that of redmi note 5pro, but now with Google cam installed these are now coming extra ordinary, thanks for the team made possible without rooting the phone.

I installed Google camera after enabling api through fastboot but not much big effect is seen from Snapdragon camera
For example I did portrait mode on Google camera but it takes much time than Snapdragon camera and also showing images of low resolution and small megapixel (my camera support 16 MP but it showed images from 8 MP and allow motion is not working and hdr+enhanced is allowed but not working, the camera got stuck every time it is turned on
Okay at well lit conditions, not good at low light
During daylight, the rear camera photos are good.
But the phone doesn't focus properly on close objects.
The low light camera is bad. A lot of noise, less light detection, slow focus, etc.
The video quality (1080p) during day is good. But the device takes time to focus during a video recording.

Unless you have really good light, selfie's aren't the best. Ridiculous amount of face smoothing I just can't seem to get rid of. Even with the settings turned off, it just does smoothing so it looks terrible.
Rear camera is good.
I have a big issue with my front camera...
When I try to take a selfie, if behind the subject there's a light(natural or artificial), the photo become blurry.
I compared my device with one exposed in a store and only my device has this issue(the settings were the same on both devices)....
Anyone has/had the same problem? If yes, how did you solve it?
I've already tried a factory reset but the problem still remain...
Gcam mod on the Note 9 takes considerably better selfie pix than the stock camera. No smoothing and a lot more detail.
Unfortunately the selfies are terrible. I have tried Android pie on the note 9 and I can say with that OS upgrade the selfie cam does get marginally better thank goodness.
The selfie cam in my opinion is bad quality. The photos are usually blurry except you are stood very still and have very good light. I think perfomance is not good enough for a €/£1000+ device and hopefully a software upgrade will fix the issue particularly the time it takes to focus
The gcam port makes the quality so much better

I have this phone for a day and I'm experiencing the same problem. All selfies look unnatural. Everything is too smooth, and blurry, just bad quality I think.
The only complain I have about the front camera is the angle. With my old LG G6 I could easily get the whole family in while talking with relatives and friends on video call.
With the Note 9 I can barely get myself in.

Quality
Selfie quality was superb in oreo 8.1, I don't see much quality after updating the phone to Android 9 or 10 versions
The self-camera on the Note 9 is actually pretty good quality when compared to most laptop and 3rd party USB Webcams. I have use it for video conferencing via Zoom, MS Teams and Cisco. All of the time the picture quality from my Note 9's selfie-camera seems to be much better quality than others who are using a laptop or traditional USB webcam

Been impressed with the camera so far. Telephoto is still hit and miss and haven't used wide angle loads but the main sensor is a big improvement over the 7 pro

I have terrible lens flare effect, device is going back.. 1/4 of the pictures had it... At a price tag of 999 , this is not acceptable for me.. saw it on some youtuber reviews to (but they didnt mention it in one word). Guess exchanging the device will not help
Will keep my old device for a couple of months and wait for october , hehe
autofocus and main sensor is better then s20 ultra , I am owner of s20 ultra and oneplus 8 pro at the same time .
in worse light scenario oneplus win in most time , photos almost always are sharp
but in zoom S20 always wins

I see an issue where you have red blotches
I haven't experienced the sun flare.
I have taken many pictures outdoors while hiking in various conditions and I am mostly happy with the camera. HDR is good and i like the exposure and colors I get. I don't really take any zoomed in shots so i can't speak to that but I generally like the shots coming out of the wide angle and main sensor.
a couple notes:
- I still notice a different white balance between the main and wide angle camera. Nothing bad and I still like both results
- Nightscape photos I notice a red tint in places. Some of the youtube reviews have mentioned this as well.
Will be interesting to see what this camera could do after a few updates over the summer.
I see that something in the indoor photo the focus is very bad at the corner of the picture... Someone has the same problem?
