Heavy use endurance - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Real Life Review

Playing Candy Crush for 22 hours straight can take its toll on your battery (and your marriage). Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+'s battery performs under heavy use. A higher rating indicates that it lasts a long time even when playing games, streaming video and audio, and doing other CPU-intensive activities.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Decided to give this machine a full Saturday of being out around town. Woke up around 9am, phone was at 90%, did some errands, listening to podcasts, watched a lot of YouTube videos at my cigar lounge, streamed different news while in the car via BT, and at night walked the dog while listening to more podcasts via Samsung Galaxy buds. At 8pm I had about 19 hours of on time since last charge, nearly 5 hours of screen on time, and ended the day now at 19% before plugging the phone in while I showered and took out the trash and I'm back at 89%. I remember the days of my OG Droid or NEXUS phones and so this is just damn mind blowing. I will still get a ZERO LEMON for when I'm at the beach or Disney (live right by there in LA) as having that extra security of power just easies the mind but other than that this Note 10+5G is beastly.

7hrs SOT including over 6 hours of UHD youtube vanced playing and around 48% battery remaining. Brightness at MAX (using video enhancer).
That's more than decent in my book!
Unlocked USA version, Snapdragon 855 with 512GB storage.

I got same SOT around 7hrs+ note 10 plus USA tmobile carrier

Add to that the screen is huge and it runs very fast.
The more I play with the 10+, the more I like it.
In another day or so I'll be holding a smartphone 1 tb of fast storage. Outstanding.
Samsung finally got the Galaxy Buds software/firmware dailed in... what's not to like*?
*ok maybe just a tad of sarcasm...

I wish I had the Snapdragon model
Exynos is .....

i got this phone... i cant remember when i got this phone, but ive ran it constantly while at work, and usually its even gaming by itself when im not using it, few months ago i thought hm prolongued use.. may be an uh oh.
0 life difference, battery still op asf

Bought the note 10 plus last year. The battery is still amazing getting 7-8 hours of SOT. I have three emails in full sync. Location, GPS, and Bluetooth always on. Definitely sticking with this phone until the end

hi.. may i ask what android version your using? pie? thanks

After heavy settings and packaging blocking mods my AT&T 10+ running on Pie uses 7-10% @ hour during internet vids, browsing, and gaming.
A 20% charge last 2-3 hours of SOT. Outstanding*.

My Snapdragon AT&T variant did about the same or worse.
It was a hot running hog dog.
86+ blocked packages, plus extensive settings mods, plus disabling all power management and adding Karma firewall, a lot of time optimizing it... it now a fast, cool running machine with good battery life.
My advice is to play with it. Keep it running on Pie.
It may yet surprise you.

Moving from the SGS2 to the Lumia.

A friend of mine has received a brand new Lumia a few days back as a gift. This guy happens to be an iOS/Android developer, and he doesn't give a damn about WP7, so he asked me if i wanted to swap my 5 months old GS2 for his Lumia, because he thinks it has no use to him. Sure, i know that this one is a big deal for sure, and that even if i don't like the phone i'll have no problem selling it making some good cash. Anyway what i'm asking you here is how does it feel moving from a top Android to a top WP7 device? Did anyone do that? What's your experience about it?
I already have an Omnia 7 so i know that WP7 is a good OS, but i was wondering basically how good this phone is as a daily driver compared to my GS2.
What will you be using the phone for? Games? Mere surfing and checking Facebook? Work? First thing I noticed when going from Galaxy S (not the 2nd) was that WP7 was way more stable and more importantly, the battery is just a beast, 24h with no charging and still having another 12h on it, despite watching movies for 3h on it.

Well i'm not really a heavy gamer, but i play some game from time to time. My usage is pretty average i guess: browsing every now and then, gmail and twitter syncing, whatsapp, youtube, a movie sometimes but that's rare. Sound quality doesn't really matter because i already have a Cowon, can't beat that anyway Basically i want a reliable and solid phone that won't die at about 3 p.m. every day with my kind of usage.
My network did not have the Nokia Lumia in stock when it came to the end of my contract a few days back, the next best this was the SGS2, I sold S2 online and with the cash bought an unlocked Lumia.
Its a really, really nice phone and is very fast, there are a few bugs (firmware related) and we have been promised by Nokia for an update in the coming weeks. If I were you I would go for it, I did, and havent looked back
I cant say about the SGS bit i switched to the Lumia from iPhone 4 and im not regretting. This Os is better than iOS.
Sent from my Lumia 800 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I did this switch my self, SGS2 to Lumia 800, and to be honest, best phone switch I've done. The phone just works and I think, despite the tiny bugs in the firmware it's still among the best phones on the market.
There's plenty of games for WP7 and the native apps other than that work pretty well.
Tho I do miss Opera Mobile/Mini on it.
There should be a thread somewhere (yikes) here that explains weak point and strong points against iOS and Android. For the phone itself it's beautifully made, feels like a real piece of hardware in your hand. It weighs a bit more then expected but hardly an issue unless you have real trouble carrying stuff
The audio quality for me at least is great but I know some people had trouble with it.
The battery life is magnificent, haven't done any real tests but it easily lasts 24h despite heavy usage.
Camera is good but I expected better for going full-out with "Carl Zeiss Optics.."; but it might just be me not having a clue how to point-and-click the damn thing.
I love this lil bugger but Ice Cream Sandwich looks pretty damn sexy as well. I think you won't be disappointed by either phone.
Ok, i think i made up my mind in the end: tomorrow i'll meet my friend and grab the Lumia
I'll report back my first impressions, thanks everybody.
If your not bothered about rooting or the customisation of android then go ahead , wp7 is a much improved version of iOS, just as fast and sleek but with menus and a better looking UI. I have a lumia given to me as a work phone. Not my cup of tea personally , wouldn't dare swap my gnexus for it but has good features as well. Build quality is top notch , decent camera (Carl Zeiss lens) , very nice screen. Down sides , poor customisation apps are slow to use , not the best app choice , no developer support and its a new os. Also because it has the funding of windows and this is one of the most important areas to the company then you know its not going to go web os way , you are going to have a phone with updates and a lot of services. (Nokia maps/music/zune )
My advice is if your looking for a iPhone because you like the way it works (simplicity etc) then the lumia all the way as it works in a similar fashion. If you appreciate the way android works (rooting roms customisation and the actual os) then keep your s2 as it is still easily one of the best phones on the market.
I'd stick with the s2 but if you got a lumia I would doubt you would be dissapointed.
Hope the upsides and downsides I have listed my help you a little
J

Good choice. My colleague here has the SGSII and gets around 16 hours battery life and has problems with apps crashing and the os lagging/random reboots. No such problems with the Lumia and I get 24 hours with heavy or 36 hours with light use.
I bought a Lumia 800 few days ago but still can't get to 24hrs.. I tried the diagnostics tool and get a 1505 mAh full charge, so I have no battery problems, but still after a few hours of heavy usage the battery dies(90% of times wi-fi is off!!!), tips?
Define heavy usage and define "few hours". I watched movies for 2-3h yesterday and then went to sleep, woke up and fiddled with the camera and checked Facebook regularly until now, 45% battery life remaining. Estimated time remaining: 14 hours. Time since last charge: 13 hours
I have never seen "remaining time 13hrs" ;-) this say's it all!
Now I have 27% with 3hours left.. I never use wifi and i deactivated (i think everywhere) GPS localisation for pictures and stuff like that..
for Heavy usage I mean mail check every 15/30 mins, 5/6 web pages opened per hour and half an hour of games every 8/9 hours with medium brightness... I don't even think that this is "heavy".. with my Nexus S (SLCD) i can get to 40/50hours with no problems and with the SAmoled one I can complete with no problem 1 day (18 to 24hours).. Is there any option that I have to set to get my battery to last enough to go to sleep with still 10/15% left? thanks

Same, my L800 is about a week old now. Battery life so far is not very good and nowhere near the advertised or GSMarena's 35/40 hours.
Right now: 88%, 12 hours remaining, 3 hours since last charge. Rather high battery drain considering low/moderate use. 1529 mAh full charge capacity.
No crazy apps that are always on using data connection except WhatsApp. I don't use twitter, I don't religiously check FB and RSS feeds are on manual refresh since I am in front of PC most of the day. Some calls, whatsapp and a few emails during the day.

At the moment I got 94% remaining and "Estimated time remaining: 1 day 6 hours".
Sounds like you have a battery bug of some sort.

I certainly hope it is a bug and the upcoming update fixes the battery issues for all. There appears to be a massive disparity in L800s battery life reports. Some people have the confirmed but where battery doesn't fully charge.
What is your drain rate in Diagnostics? Idle with screen on is between 120-135 mA with occasional spikes into 200+ mA. What is your usage pattern, more or less?
Doing around 185-200 mA idle screen on. Phone syncs to gmail/facebook/calendar, I check it about once a hour, at night I watch movies for like 2-4h and during the day I try out my apps that I developed or other ppl's ones.

Yes, must be some kind of battery bug.
Doing some math (1529 mAh battery as reported by my L800) and battery durations as provided by Nokia and GSM Arena test.
http://blog.gsmarena.com/nokia-lumia-800-battery-test-now-over-see-how-it-did-test/
Hours Drain (mA)
3G standby 265 5,77
GSM standby 335 4,56
Average 300 5,10
2G talk 13 117,62
3G talk 9,5 160,95
3G talk (GSM Arena) 8,42 181,59
Average 10,31 148,35
Music 55 27,8
Video 6,5 235,23
Video (GSM Arena) 5,87 260,48
Web Browsing (GSM Arena) 4,12 371,12
The phone should last an average person 18 hours assuming a typical 8 am - 2 am day ...
45 mins talk (110 mAh drained), 2-4 hours web/SNS (800-1200 mAh drained) and say some music for 2 hours at the gym (50-60 mAh drained) ... that still leaves 10+ hours of idle drain of around 5 mA according to Nokia.
@SvanteH: You phone's battery life is simply exceptional but do you actually get 24+ hours of usage out of it or are you down to below 10% at the end of the day?
I usually charge it every alternate night + some hour usb charging during the day

I'm jealous of your L800's battery life, trumps mine by a large margin.
[UPDATE] Unplugged at 100% charge and it said 14 hours remaining. Sigh.

My battery test is underway-Complete! 9+ hours video!

I decided to run my own battery test this morning. I created a 720p video copy from my Cars blu-ray. Copied to my Evo LTE, and started playing it on MX video player. It will play the movie over and over until I stop it. I'm trying to simulate watching video on a long flight, so I put it into airplane mode. Brightness is set to auto.
So far, the video has been playing 3 hours and 25 minutes. My battery is showing 66% remaining. So far so good. If the battery percentage is accurate, I should get 9+ hours out of this, possibly 10. I'll keep it running and see how long it goes.
Mark
Awesome! Can't wait for your results.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk 2
It's been playing for 6 hours now and the battery has 40% left. The phones seems to use about 10% per hour. Let's see if it will get up to 10 hours.
So far, I'm very impressed. My old Evo didn't last long at all playing videos during my plane flights.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, the 720p video looks amazing!!!!
Mark
Ok, so I stopped the video when my phone hit 10% battery life. The phone continued to use approximately 10% of the battery life per hour. So the final play time was 9 hours and 8 minutes. It would be very close to 10 hours if I kept going. Excellent battery life if you ask me!
(the screen shot was taken after plugging the phone in to start charging her back up. that's why you see 11% and the charging icon)

Not to shabby. It can only get better with some custom ROMs & Kernels, to maximize battery life.

Really? He gets ten hours out of a mobile phone playing 720p video and all you got is "Not too shabby"? When my Galaxy Tab was new I did a test with a video at native resolution in airplane mode and got like 5 hours of video. Considering the size of both batteries, I'd say ten hours is fricken bloody phenomenal.
As a different comparison of usage, I played about 3.5 hours of video over wi-fi on my LTE on Friday. The first half hour was through the flash player, and the latter 3 hours via the twitch.tv app. I did also have it off the charger for like 9 hours entirely and made a short phone call too. Not only is the battery on the LTE amazing, the frugalness of the hardware in using it is also.

lol. +1. This is so true and funny
Here are the video details if anyone is curious. I'm not sure if things like bit rate affect battery life.
just for comparison.
i did a similar test with my OG Evo, 4 hours it would play movies then it shut off at 0%
OP, your results are impressive. Can you post more information? I'd like to know about the audio stream. And also at what speaker volume were you playing the movie?

Battery life is great

I'm really impressed by the battery on the A7. I've had 3.5 hours of sot and 20% left even after caning it with DS Audio, 4 hours of internet radio, 50 photos plus editing and lots of surfing.
Doze is extraordinary. Check out last night's battery consumption (I really must get to bed earlier).
Best battery life on a phone that I've had so far.....Well, since smartphones. I had some flip phones that could last a week.
It seems to be a bit better than the Nexus 6P I came from. Definitely not as good as the Oneplus One, much better than the Moto X Pure.

The main thing I've noticed is that this phone doesn't get excessively hot which seems to kill the battery very fast (both issues I've had with almost every smartphone owned: Nexus 6p and Oneplus One included). Apps that use GPS, camera use, gaming etc don't seem to get the phone as hot and this seems to correlate with better battery life under use. The only time I feel the phone warming up is if I'm using the Quickcharge charger while doing something else. It's barely warm though.
If I babied my Oneplus One (Sultans ROM) I managed to get 8 hours SOT which was crazy but it didn't charge the way the Axon 7 does and it certainly wouldn't have coped with the stress I'm putting on the Axon 7. I remember things like constant GPS + Spotify + Bluetooth would mean my Oneplus One wouldn't be able to charge as fast as the battery was being drawn. Not an issue at all with the Axon 7.

I agree on all points. This is one of the coolest running phones I've ever used. Only thing I've done that creates noticeable heat other than charging is +30 minute phone calls on Bluetooth in car. And it charges unbelievably fast. Very happy!
Got ,5 and a half hours yesterday. I honestly average 5 hours. Battery life has improved significantly with this smart power voodoo on. It doesn't affect performance unlike it does on tw.
I notice more apps are closed in background when I have smart power on.. Like I'll be able to have about 5-10 apps open with smart power on.. But 15-25 with it off.
I get an extra hour sot with smart power on.
And I took quite a few pictures that day.. Totally thought I was going to toast my battery.. But it held up better than any of my samsung devices..
The Axon ZTE 7 A2017 has the most smart power!!! I dont have to worry for the whole day charging my Monster!!!
I agree with all the comments here the battery is really good, pair with fast charging if necessary is a winner !!!!
Same here I'm enjoying the battery life on this bad boy!
I would also say it's not too bad.. still 25% remaining after 5h DOT
Agree! On at 6:30 am and still at 86% - light use. 1 phone call, a few texts and 10 or so minutes checking the news. My note would have been 70-75% by midday with about the same use. Power save mode on both phones. Very happy with this phone.
I started this thread and I'm still pretty happy with the battery life but this evening I noticed the phone was a bit hot. First time I've noticed that. It drained from 45% to shutdown in 10 minutes. This is what my Oneplus One used to do. How can the same sh*t happen to the same guy twice?

Sounds like you've got a rogue app in three background that's forcing your CPU to max out and keeping it there even when not in use. There were a couple kernels on the oneplus one (including stock) with bugs like that, but it's not a kernel issue with the axon because otherwise others would have seen this. I'm betting it's a bad app.
I had just installed Kayak. Battery back up now. I'll see if I can reproduce the issue.
I cannot see the usage of apps. Any solution? I also can't see it in the system battery settings.
My buddy has this phone and literally flawless. i mean it works. it lasts. its powerful. has amazing SQ. and im over here with a friggin note 7 barely squeezing 16 hours out of it with3-4 hours DOT/SOT.

Heavy use endurance

Playing Candy Crush for 22 hours straight can take its toll on your battery (and your marriage). Rate this thread to express how the Xiaomi Mi A1's battery performs under heavy use. A higher rating indicates that it lasts a long time even when playing games, streaming video and audio, and doing other CPU-intensive activities.

Well i don't really play candy crush, but i do like playing games over ppsspp, along with some critical ops, into the dead 2, etc. And I'm almost always using facebook or instagram or chrome. Even today, I've been continuously gaming. I'm at 28% and SOT is over 7 hours.
Even when I'm not continuously playing games, i still get a full day with heavy use.

I have been easily getting 6-7 hours of SOT with heavy usage and 8 hours of SOT with moderate usage. can easily go for two days with low usage. the endurance is absolutely fantastic. that too for measly 3080mah. screenshot:

I don't play games, just lots of web surfing and other app usage, and I usually have 4-5 hrs SOT while using about 50% battery. This is with the Nov update. LTE data always enabled.
I watch a lot of YouTube videos and surf a lot. Everyday 9-10hrs screen on time (that is if I wait till battery depletes to 0). Battery life is phenomenal.
I can't reach more than 4 hours... maybe you guys only use it for reading ebooks? XD
battery life depends on screen brightness also.
there are many things which can effect battery life like,
no. of apps installed, screen brightness, wifi scanning always available ON/OFF etc.
i have one A1 (rose gold) which is used by my wife, is made in india. and she is getting good battery backup.
i am going to recieve mine (black) on this sunday, will compare both after that and post here.
(comparing both will be a good idea as rose gold is made in india and black should be made in china)

Certainly. Btw, the November patch improved battery life. Day before yesterday i had 9h of sot with 25% still left. But yeah, use wasn't that heavy but still above moderate. I usually play critical ops and some ppsspp games.

In my experience ppsspp games are quite demanding so itΒ΄s great to hear that A1 handles it well. I am going to pick it up for christmas so I am very excited.
thankfully, I don't play games on my phone(s)
just a casual browsing

Heavy use endurance

Playing Candy Crush for 22 hours straight can take its toll on your battery (and your marriage). Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy Note 9's battery performs under heavy use. A higher rating indicates that it lasts a long time even when playing games, streaming video and audio, and doing other CPU-intensive activities.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I might be tripping but my Note9 Doesn't last as long as my OP6. I run the same apps and similar settings and my note last me about 5-6 hours my OP6 Last 6-7 hours. All this with heavy usage and the OP has a lower battery capacity.
I feel like heavy use and light use consumption is around the same and get 5-6 hours SOT regardless. Browsing and using the Samsung Music app seems to drain around 1% every 5 minutes. I was expecting the battery to drain a lot faster with games but it's more subtle than I thought. Yesterday I didn't game much but used S-pen to take notes, and got 6 hours 21 minutes SOT with 6% left, within 10 hours of total usage (resolution was QHD+ most of the day). Today with some heavy gaming (Real Racing forced to QHD resolution with Game Tuner, as well as Bowling by Jason Belmonte, Alto's Odyssey) I got around 5:48 SOT in 11 hours 25 minutes (started to reduce the resolution to FHD+ around 30%).
I'm going to kill the battery in my Note 9, eventually. It's my daily workhorse. Multiple Gmail accounts, work email, continuous use throughout the day, 3 games that I check upon every hour and a half... Should last about a year by my estimate. Oh well. Phones come and go...
Heavy use endurance is okay in this phone but light usage endurance is not good. You lose %15 in a hour just by 9gag browsing.

Can I have that Fortnite promotion if you don’t play Fortnite ? I’m dying for it and that phone is to expensive for me

Sadly, samsung put a lot of effort for this not to happen. Right now it's not really possible outside of a friend that don't play fortnite and lend you his phone to login with your account and play atleast 3 full matches.
I find camera and SoundHound to drain a lot. I can barely break 4.5-5h SOT if I use the camera for over 50 minutes. The other day I was trying to see if SoundHound could identify songs from my bad singing while wireless charging and the percentage actually went down.

IMHO, the fortnite skin you get is garbage. Should have given in game money instead. Or at least pub g. I play both on my N9 with the latter getting more SOT
Recently got my Note 9 a week ago and battery has been about average as compared to my last phone. I can last 5-6 hrs of heavy use and 7 for light use. Mind you my last phone was the Galaxy A7 (2017) and battery on that thing is nuts. 7 on a heavy and 8-9 in light use. Might probably due to I game more on my note rather than my last phone.
Off topic question, was playing ragnarok mobile on my note while fast charging when I suddenly fell asleep. Woke up 4 hours later game was still on and the battery is now at 83%. Will this massively damage the battery of my phone?

Fast charging works up till 80% then it will switch to normal charging (and the 80-100% are always different charging method that is slower + better for the battery longevity). You are fine, nothing will change about your battery health. I would be more concerned about burn-ins/burn-outs, but you played most likely at lower brightness and surely not in overdrive mode = you will be just fine too.
Edit: also I forgot to mention that samsungs don't fast charge when the screen is on, only when the screen is off = it charged slowly normally and that's why it reached only to 83% (as because of the battery use, the actual + in the charge was lower than the 2A in normal charge/~500-1A in the last 20%). All good, as I said, don't worry.

Note 9 has a big and brighter screen and a lot of bells and whistles
I guess that makes sense. The bigger brighter screen could be the culprit.
I can go a day (8am to 12pm) of moderate-heavy use with some battery left over. I'm taking 5-6 hours of SOT (WhatsApp, Internet, RadioPlayer Canada, Google Maps, Twitter, Fallout Shelter). This is despite the phone not being entirely optimized for battery life besides using the Device Maintenance feature (I have wifi and data on, bluetooth, location, high resolution, automatic brightness).
The battery actually kind of sucked when I first got it lol. But it randomly improved a lot.
My SoT with heavy usage is just amazing 6-7 hours without a problem!
Has anyone used the dual sim always active feature? Im assuming it drains battery far faster, especially with extended use
ok here is the deal. games will drain the battery less than previous phones do to more efficent cpu.
however anything else didnt change at all or got even worse.
any wireless connection, sensors, screen (even worse), will be the same as in any other phone. so this is where the battery kicks in and gives us a bit more leway. yet it ahs to compensate for the insane screen. so our SOTs are pretty good.
biggest issue is google and google services as usual. with their insane collection of data we litereally pay for them collecting our data. and thats not just a little bit, its over 1000 datapoints an hour.
that was the main reason i wanted to switch to apple, but after a day in hell i gave up on the fruit ****show. way to many compromises.
however at the end of the day what really kilsl the battery is energy for the screen itself and all kind of data connections.
the cpu cycles are laughable for most games, those cpus are powerhouses, almost PC level
so turn of wlan, turn of gps whereever you dont need it, same for bluetooth, cut down on syncing services as much you can this helps a lot.
also gmail is aweful in their push services. i tossed it out, i run exchange active sync and its fine

How's your screen after the 22 hour marathon? Any screen burn in? Ghosting? What brightness do you keep it at?
