I have recently moved to the middle east and have started using the paid for ExpressVPN. It has generally worked ok, allowing me to watch some UK television such as BBC, Channel 4 as well as some Eurosport. It can be a bit fiddly meaning that I have to choose my location according to what I want to watch. Netflix works fine without the VPN other than certain genres are not available - anything with sex/nudity/violence/terrorist material. It works using the VPN too. This has all been using 4G and mobile data with mostly watching on a Pixelbook and sometimes via a Chromecast on a TV (hotel WiFi used).
However I have finally got settled in my own place and have bought a TV and installed fibre broadband. I am experiencing some issues with getting content onto the TV. The behaviour is largely similar for BBC/Channel4 in that I can get programmes (live and older stuff) on devices. BBC iPlayer app doesn't work but going through bbc.co.uk does. However if I try to cast to my fancy new Samsung TV it wont play. Sometimes I get the "The selected programme is not available in your country" and other times I just get a rotating circle and no content.
Through Chrome browser I can sometimes cast the tab and it will play but that is very hit and miss.
Netflix casts OK.
By a matter of deduction (lots of settings changing) I have arrived at the conclusion they Huawei router (ISP provided) is identifying the VPN thorough the Cast and is blocking.
Any suggestions on how to keep the VPN working when casting through the router? (I could HDMI from the Pixelbook and miss out the router but that is a bit of a pain).
Would I be better to buy my own router and configure the VPN on the firmware (how does that cope with VPN software upgrades?)?

Hey guys I've been reading through these forums since before the Prime's release and have been patiently awaiting it but obviously I have been disappointed by some of the problems that have arisen. I was hoping to get the Prime for specific applications and figured I'd ask you guys if the Prime will meet my expectations. I wanted to be sure of these things before I bought so any answers would be very helpful. Here is what I'm looking for in the prime:
1) Regarding Wi-Fi: My router is upstairs and I’d like to be able to use the Tablet to stream video from youtube or Netflix one and two floors down from the router. Will I see any problems with a non-faulty prime? Is it highly dependent on the router and internet provider? I live in a single house and when I search for my internet connection I usually see three or four others with very low signal strength, not sure if that’s an issue.
2) I plan to stream Netflix, how is this on the prime? I also would like to connect my tablet to the tv via HDMI and stream video or games.
3) I would like to download emulators for genesis, snes, psx, n64 (I own all the systems but I want something portable + hate hooking them up) and play them throughout the house, anyone know if there is lag or how well these emulators play on the prime? Can I use a wireless xbox360 controller without the dock? If not what if the prime’s rooted?
4) Remote desktop is fairly important for me. I like to play older PC games like Baldur’s Gate, Diablo, Fallout, Civilization etc. on my tablet via remote desktop. Anyone tried this? How is the range? Is there an app that allows me to wake my computer from sleep because that’s what I put my PC in when I’m not using it to save power.
5) I know GPS doesn’t work but can I use wi-fi to download maps and look at them when I’m away from wi-fi?
6) I’d like to use a Bluetooth headset to listen to music on the bus when my prime is in my bag. I have a Bluetooth mouse that I wouldn’t mind using sometimes as well. I assume both of those work fine but I read that the Bluetooth and wi-fi won’t work together so I’m guessing no youtube + Bluetooth headphones or mouse? Not a huge deal for me If they work fine without wi-fi.
7) I’d like to read fairly large textbooks on my prime and was hoping it was relatively lag free.
1. wifi for me works fine for me with decent range, well enough to where i don't notice any reall difference from my phone. i can be downstairs, in the garage, a handful of rooms over and it's fine.
2. netflix also works fine for me, i haven't connected the tablet to a tv to stream netflix, but i've played locally stored videos from the tablet via hdmi just fine.
3. i haven't used any emulators but afaik, you can't use the wireless xbox controller with the prime, but ps3 controller via bluetooth is possible with root access and the sixaxis (sp) app.
4. remote desktop works well, but for any game that needs very little lag for input, it's not going to be an ideal situation, but for something like civ, it should really be fine.
5. you can cache maps with the labs feature in google maps, it should be able to pull up map data w/o a connection, but you won't be able to search or get directions w/o a connection.
7. i haven't had any problems reading anything i've thrown on the prime yet.
I have Splashtop setup on my Prime and PC. I can access my PC desktop from my Prime on my Home Network and it works great. When I am at a Remote location and not near my Home Network can I use Splashtop and access PC from different WiFi Network? If so how?
Thanks
Couple of ways... if you have a dynamically updated domain name for your home network, you can access it through fowarded ports...
if you are connected with google services available (wifi icon = blue), then you can use the "Internet Discovery" feature in the menu of Splashtop Remote and Streamer.

I think it works if you set it up with a vpn.
Never tried.
I use splashtop with Google services all the time, works great.

Keep in mind that Splashtop doesn't encrypt at all.
I tunnel it through SSH to make it secure.

The main reason I want Remote PC access is for my wife. She will using Prime as a Laptop for Nursing Conferences she has to attend. Though she will Probably have all the file access she needs though our DropBox I just want to have something as a "backup" if she need to find something on our PC while she at one of these Conferences.
On your desktop if you goto the splashtop client theres a setting to add a gmail account. Put that in and goto the splashtop on your prime and again theres a setting to add your gmail. Now you can access it anywhere in the world. I work at best buy mobile and show customers this
Anyone tested the remote option with a good wifi connection on both sides? I tried this through a wifi hotspot from my Sensation and it was horrible lol.. As expected probably but i just wonder what speed is like under "normal" conditions.
I was playing around with this a bit last night using the Splashtop THD version purchased from the market. The connection I had setup was my home computer running Splashtop Streamer which is on Comcast Xfinity (computer is hardwired into router), then my tablet running Splashtop THD which was located ~3 cities away pigging backing off my friends wifi internet connection which also happens to be Comcast Xfinity.
I ran three tests.
First was playing all the games on my PC (Skyrim, The Witcher 2, StarCraft 2, etc.). This went admirably well aside from the fact that I clearly had issues controlling the games as only Skyrim has a gaming profile. Otherwise it ran surprisingly smooth and reminded me a lot of OnLive, Skyrim being the best test since I had an external usb mouse with me plugged into the tablet and was able to look about in the game.
Next I did some basic functionality testing with web browsing, word processing, and music playing... all of which were executed flawlessly.
The last test I ran was with video streaming (ie. playing fullscreen video on my home PC while connected from the tablet in Splashtop). I played a 1080p, 720p and 480p video for the tests, all played admirably well given a few seconds to sync audio/video. What I mean by this is usually when the videos started (or if I were to seek forward or back) the audio would be out of sync temporarily for about 5-15 seconds depending, and then finally catch up. Once caught up however the video from that point on seemed to play flawlessly.
The only thing I sadly did not remember to do was running a speedtest at Wifi Analyzer at my friends house. I do remember however that I was at full signal strength for the wifi connection at my friends house (my tablet in general has zero wifi issues, typically it performs better than my moto atrix). Overall I would say it performs admirably well but if you are going to have less than 50% wifi strength you will probably start to see noticable lag. I will also comment that typically the Comcast Xfinity internet in my area clocks are 30/8 for down/up in Mbps.

Can you have more than 1 Gmail account listed on Splash top? I am using the Splash top included with the Prime and I am logged in with my Gmail account but I don't see how to Add an account. Do I need to log out of my account to add my wife's Gmail as a 2nd access account?

I remember using Splashtop on my TP when first got it but after I factory-reset my tablet, I don't see the icon anymore. How do I access Splashtop now?

So disappointed when I found this out, I just purchased this device and after I finally got all my media servers setup, cast screen, transcoding setup everything perfect, except the damn backdrop which I couldn't turn off ( I only want to mirror my screen I would care less about the internet functions, I wanted it for local playback, I don'e even really care about the dlna stuff either.), so fooling around with iptables I block the chromecast ip address and reboot chromecast thinking I beat it, and damn chromcast connects to AP but shows no internet access!! so I was like ok whatever that was expected, however it blocks screen mirroring, and DLNA until it can connect (after it connects once then you can block it again but what a hassle!)
so I was wondering if anyone knows the initial IP or hostname that it needs to connects to , I was thinking about just allowing that single host through then block everything else, Idk I might just return it this is really a deal breaker :....(, I own a device but it requires google to work, something not right here.
it's like buying a car but it won't run without being permanently hooked up to a gas station.
all the non wifi hacks are ridiculous too since they are just routing the internet through the cell network it's not actually doing anything different except using mobile data, what we need is some kind of server emulator that can send fake responses back (but since everything is sent over ssl I doubt that is possible).

I think the first thing to realize is, that the chromecast is not primarily intended as a screen mirror receiver. It can do it, but it's primarily a streaming player for online content.
There are great miracast receivers that do basically what you want. While i agree that it's a bit strange for this feature to require internet access, it's sadly how google earns money. And after all, allowing the initial handshake is basically the same as leaving it unrestricted. Google won't stream your whole session, they just want to know what you use the cast for. You'd allow that anyways.

Well, sadly the state of miracast on Samsung isn't that easy. Samsung isn't saying on their site wether your specific Tablet supports miracast. They're all about samsung smart view... On Amazon there are tons of miracast dongles for 20$ or less. The fire TV Stick can do it too. The S3 Neo doesn't seem to support it. Samsung seems to have dropped miracast, mhl and usb-otg when refreshing the S3 Also, Samsung smart view only seems to be integrated into samsung smart tv's Again, samsungs information are scarce concerning that...
Is there a specific reason for not allowing internet access to the chromecast?
Miracast receiver "Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter v2"

Hi! I'm new in this forum.
I have this problem:
- I want to screen mirror my device (Samsung TAB 3 7.0) without a internet connection neither SIM (no mobile connection).
I made a wifi net with a NETGEAR router. I setup my chromecast to connect with this wifi (initially i gave this wifi a internet connection).
In this scenario all works fine and i can screen mirror without any problem.
Also if i stop internet connection i can continue to screen mirror without problem.
After I shut down Chromecast, when I restart it (the wifi have no internet connection at this time) and I try to connect my device for screen mirror it seems that my device can't connect with chromecast.
Anybody have some idea how to solve it?
Thank in advance!
I haven't found any solutions... i need some help!

@Damiano40 - You should try the Miracast receiver from Microsoft (Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter v2). Works great with my Nexus 7 (2013) on Android 6! :good:

I talked to Google about this at length. The basics are this: Chromecast requires a connection to the internet so it can pass things through Google. What most folks don't know is Google checks for pirated material. They flag the person who has it and reports it to the owners of the material for matters to be resolved by them.
I found this out because my aunt had a pirated movie and played it through Chromecast. She called me in because the casting stopped after a few minutes of broadcast. Later we got a message demanding we call Mediacom over it.
Another time the power went out and I wanted to Chromecast a video I downloaded (legally) and wanted to cast it to the screen. Google said they need it to be cast through Chromecast to them then bounced back to our set. Go figure.
In some instances of the newer Chromecast you can cast directly but not with the older model Chromecast.
If you can't mirror or cast to the Chromecast it is because of 1) the age of your device, 2) Some apps don't play well with Chromecast, or 3) you don't have a connection to Google.

Lol, please tell me you are joking... If you aren't, then it would probably be best to educate yourself on how a Chromecast operates, and then think the process over in a thorough manner before spreading such nonsensical rumors in the future. I'm going to save my breath and not waste my time explaining why Google most definitely is not interrupting playback on your Chromecast because they "detected" you were playing pirated media... nor why they most definitely are not monitoring what you are playing and reporting it to Mediacom... I'll be the 1st one to cast suspicion on Google for many of their questionable practices with user data, but I can assure you that Google is not wasting their time targeting your aunt's Chromecast over a pirated TV show that ultimately Google has absolutely no way to ascertain whether your aunt has legally licensed. Your ISP on the other hand would happily hand over every shred of your personal data to any of the media conglomerates who demand it of them because they provided a log of you downloading that pirated show from a torrent.

Wtf...this is so not true...Are you trolling??? I think the majority of users play pirated content on the chromecast..i you get flagged by anyone its your isp not google
Never said I played pirated content. However, without an internet connection the Chromecast is almost next to useless. Which is why I retired my devices for ones that can play directly without the internet. All in-house.
...and Google did tell me it required a connection to them, and they do sample content...
To start with, its impossible to sign up for an account in the orange pi forum. It seems, its a very closed forum.
My orange pi plus served me well as an online movies streamer, when connected to a Thomson modem. However, when connected to a cisco EPC 3925 movies streaming is a disaster, unusable. Online live TV and browsing is ok. The server claims he is not throtting or making any restrictions. So, the problem may be the media player or the cisco modem. I am using the android player
