Archos 101 for Kids - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi XDA Community,
I can tell, I used the search function and I also used google. However, I am, more after an advise than a exact solution
My nephew is already into YouTube a lot. So for his birthday my parents bought him an Archos 101 3g V2 - I think it is a GEN9 then, isn't it?
So the thing is now that the UI of the tablet seems to react quite slow. Also YouTube and YouTube Kids is loading quite long and freezing from time to time.
I think that the tablet is just not powerfull enough to deliver fast video changes, which my nephew actually does.
With resetting to factory default I was able to bring down the used storage from 2,71 GB to 737 MB (total: 3.85 GB) and the used RAM after reboot to 63% instead of 71% (total: 0.94 GB). Most of the resources is used by Android itself. I found UrukDroid, which seems to fit nicely to Archos, but as far as I can see, there is no development anymore. Could you recommend, how I could get more out of the tablet? Are there any other things I could try to optimize? Should I look for another customer ROM? Dou you have any recommendations for a tablet which is mainly used for youtube and by a child?
Thank you in advance
Ramses

Did I post in the wrong section, or did I do anything else wrong? Or does just noone has any advise for me?

[Q] archos 101

hi all just a quick question about the archos 101 i just got mine in the post
is there a alternative rom that i can flash to it as i find the archos one quite laggy, if not what would happen if i installed the oxygen gingerbread one i have on my htc desire on it ?
thanks
Estevey
to solve the lag, install the latest firmware from archos.com
in settings/about device/powermanagement, set the cpu to overboost.
and install/use Zeam launcher.
you cant use a desire rom.

This is exactly what I did and it runs well for me. I still have some issues with it not coming out of standby after being left a while but for the most part this makes it an easy to use fun tablet. I am not that concerned with quadrant scores or creating some ultra powerful tablet. I was ready to throw it out when the firmware came out. Firmware + Zeam work excellent and now I use it everyday.
i did this still not as fast and smooth as a HTC desire which i thought it would be or better than
still happy with it and cant wait till some custom roms are released for it
would rooting it make any difference to the performance and running the ext4 on a sd card ?
I have an HTC Desire as well as my Archos 101.
The desire has more than double the ram of the 101, its bound to be more responsive
I think the 101 is very nippy to be honest once you set it on overboost and install Zeam. Also turning off live wallpapers and uninstalling (or not installing) voice search sped mine up a lot.
Give try to or maybe switch to.....
To all tablet lovers,
In fairness to you guys, I heard a lot of issues of the Archos 101. Since it has a single core processor. No wonder the performance is getting slow. Samsung has the same processor, but it has only 7" screen compare to 10". Nvidia Tegra 2 core is on rocks in the market tablets right now, aiming for the new OS (honeycomb). Give a try to Viewsonic Gtab...it worth for the price of 16Gb.
almost all release 'issues' with the 101 were sorted by the latest firmware update. Its now stable, pretty quick and great value for money.
the viewsonic is a good ptablet but the firmware sucks still, so im glad I went for the archos 101 to be honest.
I'd love a dual core tablet, and know that the gen8 archos tablets may never see android 2.3 let alone 3.0, but I bought the 101 knowing that it would run 2.2 and 99% of the apps out NOW, so I'm happy.
you cant get a better tablet for the money right now if you ask me.

+1 I love my 101!!!
well i have sorted mine out !
i did reinitialization of the device and installed no 3rd party applications (i think this was the main slow down) then i bumped the cpu to overdrive in the about in settings and the big one here that made all the difference was disabling the eye candy (animation) which makes no odds if your going to install zeam which i did and the market
i am now very happy with the archos 101 and have no complaints after hearing some of the horror stories with the china alternatives.
all i need to do now is find a key bored that i am happy with also a updated version on zeam and i will be chuffed to pices
Steve
have you tried swiftkey or thumb keyboard (set it to 10" tablet mode), both are great alternatives to the stock one.
swiftkey are releasing a tablet version of their keyboard soon as well.
you say you disabled the animation...? where did you do that specifically?
cheers.

I agree with you with NO questions, Stock OS is sucks! But there are 5 ROMS to choose (TnT, Zpad, Vegan, CM and Ubuntu) for you to tweak to get your Gtab into beast. Many of ARCHOS user tryinh to tweak too to get the tablet to its maximum performance right? Visit the forum once in Gtablet and you will see great good Developers and never ending supports.
to disable animations simply go to settings and select animation then no animation it relay makes a BIG difference to the device'

Am not trying to argue with you guys, but lets face the reality...My first choice is Archos 101, i've been waiting for more than a month for my order, but its no luck. In my opinion Archos company is delaying the shipment, till i cancelled my order. My question is WHY? Maybe they still trying to fix those issues? I observe at the Gtab forum, and read those supports, issues, etc...and what a good community of developers. Thats why i convinced to get the Gtablet. But still i gonna buy the Archos 101 once it available in market (retailers). Am still a fans of Archos, but what a shame, Gtablet is on the rocks right now. Technically wise and supports.
Try to visit this forum just once if you have time..

I love the Archos too have the 101. In the beginning I had problems and had to reset it twice but now it's running good. My EVO has double the ram but this is a decent tablet for what I want. I just unchecked that animation thing to see if it makes a difference. Not even sure what it does. I also had to uninstall Volice Search it really slowed me down and messed me up. Yahoo Messenger and Video messed me up too. I had a couple other apps not work but playing Word Feud and Angry Birds is great on here. I use it to surf the web and do facebook mostly and get some of my emails. I am glad I bought it.
I read up on tablets before hand and at first considered the Gtab but I am not into rooting and all that don't know how. I also had an older Archos 605 MP3/Video player wifi from way back when I Pod Videos 1st came out and I really like Archos. I love having the market place on here and my calendar being synced.

[Q] Custom ROM for Superpad II model: 'SAWEE10' ?

I bought this tablet:
Link: http://www.aliexpress.com/product-g...220-Super-Pad-HD-10-2-Tablet-wholesalers.html
And found out that it is a knockoff of the original ibex FlyTouch 3. This tablet model number is : SAWEE10. Instead of Disco10 or disco. I was wondering if there is any chance of running a custom ROM on it.?
The original flytouch comes with an 8000mAh battery while this comes with a 5600mAh battery.
If there is no chance of a custom ROM, can I even root this device and make a ROM backup so that I can try removing useless apk's? I think there might be an internal microSD card that contains the ROM, so I am planning on making a copy of it and then messing around with it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!
Hey did you ever find out what you can do with that knockoff you have? I have the same one and can't find anything on the net. Everyone in the forums tell me to return the tablet. That's not a challenge to me
I received it and found out that the Model number is : SAWEE10. It auto shuts off every 30 minutes or so. Playing back 720p mkv's are no problem, but gaming lags and games like raging thunder misread the accelerometer data, so it cannot be used. But Doodle Jump works fine
But no custom ROM for this model???
Sadly, none yet. But the stock ROM is not that bad as it is. I will open mine up soon and make a backup of the internal MicroSD card. Then I am going to remove all the useless apps and junk that comes preloaded.
What app are you using for "system info" I see from the site you got your tablet from, it has a ARM11 cpu. The site I got mine says the same, but when I run this info app I got, it says I have a ARMv6 in mine. Maybe thats why its so damn slow. It also says 791Mips
ARM11 CPU's are based on the ARMv6 architecture. Just like how the Galaxy S2 is an ARM Cortex A9 based on the ARMv7 architecture.
The app I am using is called 'Android System Info' : https://market.android.com/details?id=com.electricsheep.asi&hl=en
If you refer here: http://cnmaxever.com/blog/armv6-arm11-chips-telechips-tcc8902-infotmic-imapx200-zenithink-zt-180/
You will find that 1MIPS is 1.2MHz. Mine is the Infotmix IMAPX200 and says 839MIPS. So it is running at 1GHz.
Mind sharing the link you bought yours from?
I know it might be a little slow, but the multimedia performance is better than my old laptop with a 1.4GHz pentium 4 with 2GB of RAM.
Playing 1080p mp4 music videos and 720p mkv's through HDMI out is no problem at all. And games like Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds and Cut the Rope run quite well.
If you want to improve your touchscreen responsiveness, use this: https://market.android.com/details?id=br.shop4apps.touchscreenbooster.com&hl=en
Thanks for the links. That touchscreen booster made a big difference.
Here's the link where I got mine from. I can't remember the vendor, but there are
several hundred. I also just ordered some 7" models.
SORRY WON'T LET ME POST THE LINK I GOT THIS MESSAGE
"To prevent spam to the forums, ALL new users are not permitted to post outside links in their messages. After approximately eight posts, you will be able to post outside links. Thanks for understanding!"
It came from dhgate dot com. just do a search for 10.2 1ghz 512mb tablets and you will get several hundred vendors.
If I can figure out the vendor I will re-post it to you. But I would not buy from
again, had a hard time with the seller on some issues. But there are plenty of
others to choose from.
I also ordered and received the original 10.2" Ibex tablet, but not able to play with it yet since it came to me with a cracked screen. Waiting for the screen replacement.
Yeah, new members cannot post links. You need 8 posts to post links.
I like the tablet a lot actually. I got mine at a crazy cheap price, so I don't really care. The Ibex one costs a bomb(almost twice of what I paid for mine). At that price I would rather save a bit more and buy myself the Galaxy Tab 10...
And like I said, the stock ROM is not that bad. It can be improved with other apps and task killers.
So you are giving up on your first tablet and moving onto the Ibex one?
No I still like the knock off. And as you said the Stock ROM is not bad at all. If I can't find the app on its favor of Market, I just download the app as a apk file and then install it. Most of the time they work. I did open mine up and there isn't a sd memory card in it. I just got the new touch screen for the Ibex and replaced that over the weekend and flashed it with the Tim6a. Works fine. The Ibex did have a removable sd card inside. Also just got 2 7" tablets from the same place as the knock off. They are 1ghz processor 1gig memory and 8gig drive space. I really love the 7" ones. Very fast, really touch sensitive screens and much faster over all. Now I'm looking to see what trouble I can do with them as well
Wow, the 7'' ones have 1GB of RAM? That is huge!!.
I opened up mine too, and found the MicroSD card in it. Had to delete a bootnimation that was preventing it from coming on, so I used a virtual machine booting puppy linux to access the EXT3 partitions.
And the 7'' ones will always be smoother, because the resolution is so much lower than the 10'' ones.
Yeah I think I like the 7" ones much better for now. I even just ordered another one from this place. Its 1.5ghz and has ICS 4.0 Beta on it. So I wana play with that now too
http://www.merimobiles.com/Teclast_P76ti_1_5GHz_CPU_HDMI_8GB_7inch_5_points_p/meri0709.htm
Cap. Screen for only $119. Don't know what Im gona do with all these tablets LOL
Haha, lucky you. I am sticking with my 10'' because it is fantastic for watching movies right off a thumbdrive. And it plays it equally well when outputting 1080p to my TV.

[Q] Easypix Easypad EP970

Hi to all.
Has anyone tried it or is aware of any review on Easypix Easypad EP970? I am thinking on buying one, since specs look very good without me being an expert on CPU performance data (9.7 capacitive, Rockchip R2918 1.2Ghz, 1Gb, 8Gb, 8000mAh, Gingerbread) and price is rather low for these specs.
Also, does anyone know of any custom ROM for it? The source code is readiy available from their site so I guess someone with knowledge can do it easily.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
unfortunately this tablet is not focused from many people - the price and specs are fine - i would say the closest competitor is the Archos Arnova 9 G2
better specs vs better screen for 240€ - i would like to see a video about the quality of the easypad 970 screen
Android 4.0 for Rockchip 2918: Link
Thanks. So, am I right to assume that any Rockchip 2918 9.7" based ICS or Honeycomb ROM would do for the Easypad as well?
Talking about the Arnova 9 G2, it looks interesting indeed. Slightly slower CPU, one camera less, slightly thicker, but 50 Euro less!!
On the Arnova's downside, no mention on the battery capacity though (will be hard to beat Easypad's 8000mAh), and worse of all not avaiable for sale as yet.
I guess Prestigio will be coming soon with a similar model as well.

There would be still a ROM portation nessecary to adjust certain aspects and implement certain driver. But at least it should be simple for experienced Modder.

Yeah at beginning next year there will be some very similar and interesting devices in the low budget area.
Archos Arnova 9 G2; 10 G2
Easypad 970,
Prestigio
and also Coby Link
For now the Archos has the biggest community, i think root is already possible for Arnova 9 G2, because of the similarity to the Arnova 10 G2. Maybe next year other devices will be community or company supportet as well - unfortunately no one can really say.
Interestingtimes ahead then.
I think it is wiser not to rush now and wait for next year. Let's see.
Thanks
the easypad970 seems to be a good purchase now
Link
its identical to cube U9GT2
therefore easy to root and Android 4.0 final release is coming soon
Happy new year.
I got the 970 a couple of days before the new year. I couldn't resist the temptation when I had it in front of me. I also bought one for my bro as well.
Already I rooted it with Gingerbreak (minor snag after that, during shutdown, but workaround by another app), loaded with apps, and tested on dlna multimedia servers, etc etc.
Generally happy with it. Now is about time to experiment with ICS. Just to confirm that I can use a U9GT2 ROM without a problem, even though this one has 8Gb NAND instead of 16Gb of U9GT2?
Sorry for the noob question
BTW thanks for the links. Great help!!
grz - i got one too its cheap, good performance, good quality, and has a excellent display
i would recommend to change the Launcher and the Keyboard, to e.g.:
Go Launcher Ex and Hacker´s Keyboard
for Gaming install Chainfire3DPro and within Chainfire install OpenGL Driver
for Gameloft Games, like Order & Chaos you need to change the build.prop (\System): Link (Thread #8)
HardKeyboard + Mouse + USBStick work also fine
and yes - you can use the Cube u9gt2 ROMs - the USB Driver doesnt work as fine as the
970 but it works - with a installed cube ROM u need to use a RKManager to switch off the Tablet,
then press Volume (-) + Power keep pressing and put the USB cable in the computer, then
the Device will be recognized from the RKManager und you can take away the Fingers
Thanks for the good info. Congrats on your new gadget!
Will try games etc, but at the moment I am trying to find the best calendar and contacts apps in order to sync with Outlook and keep the categories, and some networking functions.
There is something in the German forum that you kindly provided the link, that I need to clear up: "richtet 1GB anstatt 500MB für Apps ein". Google translation implies not clearly that if I use the Cube ROM, it gives me 1Gb for installing apps instead of 500Mb as in Easypad. Is that correct?
If so, out of curiosity then, any ideas why Easypix gave us only 500Mb (which have almost run out on mine and I am also using Apps2SD)? And where does Cube take that extra space from? Is it from the NAND Flash memory which it has double than ours? If so, then we Easypad owners wouldn't have any problem with half the NAND and even then reduced by another 500Mb? Or is it just too trivial and I shouldn't bother about it? Because I need that 1Gb badly

Hey,
I'm one of those germans with an Easypad 970
Well I upgraded my stroage for Apps from 500mb to 1gb without any problems. I think the Cube U9GT2 Rom upgrade changed the partition sizes too. So we will lose 500mb from the normal NAND flash an can use it for apps.
greetings
yes its a decision for the ROM maker between more storage for the system or for the user - i really prefer 1GB for Apps
I would recommend the new Cube Firmware 1.05 = Android 4.0.3 (Source), i tried this one out the whole day and im very pleased. It runs very stable, has 1GB for Apps, flash works and some Apps look really good with ICS.
for Calendar - i use "Jorte" and youtube is here
Good.
I am also thinking of installing this specific firmware (or any update) by next week and hope by that time someone will fix the adb issue.
Did you notice any improvement on battery life?
no unfortunately i didnt notice any improvement in battery life, and in the next days we will see probably some more ROMs so there is no need to hurry
Hi, I also have the Easypad 970 and very pleased with the quality of the screen and overall speed of the tablet. Unfortunately, it seems there are some devices (like mine) with faulty/bad WiFi chips and this is a real problem. Currently, trying to get it fixed with easypix support and respons is OK so far. Tomorrow I will try to get an RMA for it.

[Q] Archos 5IT ROM, all roads point to nowhere!

I just got my hands on a 500GB Archos 5IT. I know it's pretty legacy, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to be able to carry around all 300gb of music with me for simply wiping away a friend's debt.
Anywho, I've already become irritated with the constrictive hybrid Archos/AndrOS UI, and after searching for a couple hours every URL I've seen for a download of an AndrOS 2.2 or greater ROM has been long since dead.
Does anyone have a copy of a (slightly) more current ROM floating around that they would be kind enough to email me or upload? Assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Danke.
Shameful self-bump. ;.;
I hate doing this. Been doing some more digging on teh interwebs, and of course, all the URL's I uncovered for cloud storage have been dead for as long as 2 years.
Damn legacy devices... I just had to fall for the 500gb cap ;(
Not sure where you are at with this, but I also recently obtained a 5IT to use with torque obd2 app. So I thought to see if it could also work for mp3 player, gps, etc. Cheap carputer as it were...
There is the most up-to-date stock firmware (donut 1.6):
http://update.archos.com/7/archos5/archos5_r2.0.45/firmware_archos5.aos
which will be required anyway if you want to try a more up-to-date custom ROM (gingerbread 2.3):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335620
If you go this route and want GPS to work ahead of the next release there is a small tweak required, which is not really as difficult as it sounds:
http://dev.openaos.org/ticket/116#comment:27
My .02:
In the end it works, but the device RAM is too low to have GB run very well in practice (ie more than 1 process at a time). The stock firmware feels faster and you can install Market to get more apps:

HTH,

Teclast m89 and other devices (I'm here to start studying I don't know from where)

Hi all, I'm Rafael and I'm a noob.
Some weeks ago I've started to look at devices in a different way, and discovered a big world inside it; I've seen a lot of useful things that you can learn and do with an old device or with the device that unfortunately I bought:
a teclast m89.
This last is the reason because I want to study and learn what can I do with a device sold and reviewed like the best of the best and after a month of conscious use I've discovered that i want to destroy it.
Why?
Minimum brightness of the screen is the maximum brightness of a standard device;
80% of the ? drain go to the screen;
Battery autonomy, 3/4 videos on Amazon video, little web surfing and that's all. connect the cable.
Amazon video? you have a 2k display but you can't see a video in HD.
You want to read a book? don't worry you can't relax in your bedroom with the lights off because the screen is a navy seal torch!
You want security patches? Don't worry we sell you a new tablet instead! (Who cares about customers and pollution).
You want gestures? Android 7 and no mayor updates it's enought for the price you paid!
Native Dark mode?
Random shutdown? Yes we offer it, specially if you're working on something of unsaved and important from several hours.
What teclast m89 is good for? Anything outside of the box except using like a cutting board.
But looking on custom ROMs, modding, and a lot of things I thought that this device have a potential. Yes, I think that is not possible to solve all the problems I mentioned above but I hope for the best possible result.
So I've looked tons of videos and red a lot of webpages but I'm continuing to feel ignorant and unsure about Android things, I saw a lot of videos where people saying how fantastic the root is but at the end of the video I don't understood what a root is (maybe is my fault).
Something about me:
I have a Windows background, ms-dos and commodore 64 (experience at 4 years old), I'm able to Use a Bios and change settings without do a disaster or install Ubuntu without destroy the PC, able to fix a broken display in simple devices, upgrade a laptop or build a rig...but I'm a completely noob
So the question to the community is this:
How can improve my knowledge regarding android and move the first steps into install custom ROMs? how can i become aN aware user? From where you start?
Thank you very much
Cheers
Rafael
Other devices LG G3, Samsung S3, Honor 9 lite.
P.S. I hope it's all right with rules and section, sorry in advance.
