Hi,
I would like to know how much battery do the wi-fi, mobile network and gps options use if they're active but not being used: that is, if no application is making use of the gps, the phone is not connected to a wi-fi network and there is no network traffic at all.
Would it be worth bothering to turn those options off under these conditions? Or would it be a waste of time?
GPS 'should' be drawing little to no power if not requested by an app - in theory.
Mine is on all the time and my battery while not lasting as long as I'd quite like, is not being drained like it would if GPS was active.
I take the fact that as the GPS icon is not displayed in the status bar unless turned on by Maps or another app, that its sitting idle.
I 'think' having GPS on means that its available to be used by apps. If off , then its not available at all ever.
WiFi however is on regardless and will be sniffing for networks or attached to a network. Only off or asleep depending the sleep settings you've selected.
i.e off when screen off.
Would wifi use energy if you told it not to notify new spots?
According to BatteryStatus widget, my HTC Hero drops from 95% to 74% in exactly five hours of physical sleep (that's me who slept, not the machine, ok?), I turn the machine into Airplane Mode.
Darn, it forces me to bring the charger to work. (USB charging apparently doesn't do much)
I am not sure if it's the inaccuracy ofthe widget, or do some vampire drained the battery this fast. I have uninstalled NetCounter and Batter Status and Infodroid, disabled Peep update, bogged down Facebook/FLIckr updates to 4 hours, I will see if this machine can achieve longer battery duration tonight.
I like keeping my wifi on while my screen is asleep so that I can receive chat messages or e-mails without being at my computer. I never had this problem while running ICS on an unrooted TF201, but ever since I installed the upgrade to JB my wifi will always disconnect after the screen has been asleep for a few minutes. I've checked every setting I can think of. In the Wifi Advanced menu, I have it set so Wifi is always on, and in the ASUS customized setting I have Disconnect network during sleep to off. Under Power Saver I have Enable low battery settings off, set Low battery level to 0%, and even set Wifi OFF to off. Despite all of this, it seems like the tablet under JB goes into some sort of deep sleep and disconnects the wifi after about 5 minutes of inactivity.
I have noticed that this problem does not occur when the screen is on. I also have the dock, and set the screen to always on during meetings in the event that I don't need to enter any notes for a few minutes so I don't have to fool with any delays from screen wake .
Is there some setting I'm missing? Is it a hidden setting that I could access by rooting? Or am I dealing with something internal to the build that I can't change at all? This may not seem like a huge deal to most, but it has become one of my main uses for the tablet when I'm at home. I'm very disappointed with JB so far even though the wifi does feel more responsive on the Prime after the update (when it's not sleeping, of course!).
EDIT: I noticed this evening that the wifi turns off even when I'm running something that uses it while the screen is off. I was listening to Pandora, and about 5 minutes after the screen went off, my music stopped. When I turned the screen back on, I saw that the wifi had indeed become disconnected.
hey,
I have exactly the same problem with my tablet. I have checked every option, I did a factory reset several time, I have checked it on 2 different routers but it is still disconnecting the wife when it goes in the sleep modus. Did you or anyone else find a solution?
I have both of these setting turned on, but for some reason the bluetooth discoverability will dissapear every few hours for a few minutes, and the wifi seams to go to sleep after a certain amount of time (hours) after the screen is off. I imagine, particularly with the wifi that this might be done to conserve battery.
The reason I know this is that I use the phones bluetooth discoverability to determine whether or not I am at home or away, and trigger events accordingly through my home automation software. When the bluetooth mac address of my phone is not found to be present, a ping is sent through wifi as a fallback. However both are failing according to the logs. (not to mention all my lights and electonics turning off while watching a movie, or even worse the lights and electronics turning on at two in the morning as if I had just arrived home when actually I was asleep in bed)
I didn't have this problem with my OG EVO 4g, and so I am hoping there is a hidden setting or even maybe an app available that will hold these setting to do what they say, and not just use them as a suggestion. I understand the battery trade-off.
Edit: I am on a CM10 ROM, so I do not have smart sync
Well go to advanced in the WiFi and Bluetooth setting. And you'll see what to do when you get there

I already know what to do there (as is pointed out in the title of the topic), those are both enabled.
I have noticed weird behaviour of my Lenovo A1000 tablet and I would like to find out is it normal (I was finding similar topic but I've not found).
When I charged device fully and unplugged it, battery discharges slowly by about 24 hours. After about 12 hours from disconnection battery is 98%, next 12 hours - 95-96%. Afterwards, it discharges much faster, for example - before night it is 95%, in morning it is 83%. Sometimes it falls 20%.
I installed Wakelock Detector. By first 24 hours, it says that there was 1 screen wakelock: Android System - keyguard triggered several times and it lasted several seconds (always less than 20). When my battery is being drained, WD says that this wakelock lasted above 1 hour.
Is it normal, or something drains my battery, or battery sensor/indicator is low quality?
Tablet doesn't have 3G modem; Wi-Fi is turned off when device is asleep; turned on sync: Gmail, calendar, contacts (photos, G+, Facebook, Twitter etc are turned off); positioning is turned off (GPS, Wi-Fi); Google Now is disabled; all apps are up to date.

OK, I've done some tests. Battery is drainded when Wi-Fi is turned on and lost connection, even when it is set to switch off when asleep. When I make device asleep and turn off my Wi-Fi router, tablet is awake during that time and it can't go into deep sleep. I uninstalled apps like Facebook etc. and it didn't help, hence it is not problem with app sync (unless Google services).
Does anybody know where is the problem?
When you sleep, does your phone sleep, or does it stay up all night and crunch 1s and 0s? Rate this thread to express how you deem the speed at which the Google Pixel 4's battery drains under standby conditions. A higher rating indicates that when the phone is not in use, the battery drains minimally.

Really good standby drain for me. Around 0.7-1. %
The standby.. Everytime is different.
Sometimes i get 10% overnight. Sometimes 6%. Sometimes 7-8%. And last night 2% (for 7h).
Wifi always on, motion sense on, AOD off, adaptive battery on, phone flat on display

turn off adaptive battery and your standby time will be closer to the post before you

Tried one night. It was about 8% for 8h..
And last night it drained 5% in 9h, with adaptive battery on

this is with 60hz.. check to see if wifi scanning is on. even if you turn it off and you use an app that asks you to turn location on like Google maps. if you hit yes it will automatically turn wifi scanning back on. I also turn off auto sync and sync things manually when I choose too.
Thanks for the reply.
How is going in prolonged standby? I've observed that when commuting it drains more battery. Even if i am using location history that's a bit too much, because most of the time i am not moving. I am just placing the phone on my desk.

Turning the wifi and Bluetooth scanning off are among the first things I do when i setup a device.
I need auto sync.
I've just turned off "mobile data always on" from developer options and will see if it helps or not.

having location history on shouldn't affect the battery, it's just storing history.
it'll turn back on though if an app requests for location and you press yes. for ex. use Google maps and it'll probably ask for location to be turned on even if you have location on already. if you press yes it'll turn on wifi scanning.
I do the same. turning off mobile data always on should help.
the standby drain usually comes from play services, but it could also be an app that was downloaded. from my experience, it's usually play services.. yeah if you need autosync then it is what it is. because even if your phone is face down it's still going to use your cpu. it's probably better for you to turn adaptive battery on, but you should limit/restrict your apps manually, instead of letting it notify you when it thinks an app is running too much in the background. I know a pixel 3 user that was using adaptive battery with 30 apps restricted and it was working for him. I never restricted apps manually when I had adaptive battery on. that could be the reason adaptive battery never worked for me. my play services would be higher than 5%, sometimes even 15%-20% with it on. now I rarely go over 4%
these pics are from my 3. it also depends on your reception, there aren't any battery saving tips for that , except to put it in airplane mode.
one more thing is to calibrate your battery. I understand that li-ion batteries don't have memory like nickel. but I think it something to do with the OS storing the battery capacity or something.
charge your phone to 100, drain it till it turns off. plug it in and charge it to 100. unplug turn it on and repeat the steps 1 more time. this helps especially on big updates.
the battery becomes more efficient and consistent. when I updated to 10 from pie my battery would drain quickly to like 50% and then below that it would slow down.
I am roaming right now and connected to a WiFi network with dual band on the same SSID. It's frustrating how much the battery drains when idling!
7% loss in less than 2h completely idle..
From 95% to 88% in 1h40 of standby!
I have no access to the router to force it on a band, it keeps switching from 2.4ghz to 5ghz.
If i turn off wifi and leave mobile data on, then Google Play services is on top of the draining list.
I am starting to hate all these Android inconsistencies..

turn off your auto sync. it updates every 15 mind and keeps your phone from dozing. just manually sync it. it literally takes 6 clicks.

Man, it has literally nothing to do with auto sync.
I have battery issues both when using the phone and while standby.
The phone is getting annoying warm. That doesn't happen when i am home. Now i am using a different wifi connection.
Now home (different router, different SSID for each band) the wifi consumption seems normal and the phone doesn't heat anymore while using. That's so pity when you have no control to wireless router and you get into this situation! This seems to be related to Android, since i had the drain also on OnePlus 5.
Made a little test, when not in "doze mode" it consumes 2% each hour.
And overnight somewhere between 4-8% (random !?) for ~8h.
All standby times, no background tasks
Wifi & Bluetooth scanning off, motion sense off, idle screen (AOD) off, wifi on, location on, always on data off, Bluetooth on, tap to wake on, lift to wake on, now playing on, assistant voice match off
My battery drain reduced to 3% overnight (8+ hours sleep), with motion sense completely OFF
@jalado do you have any issue with Google play services or phone idle consuming a lot of battery?
I've attached a screenshot with battery usages.
I've already cleared Google play services data + cache yesterday (+ a reboot after about 30mins) before charging.

no, my idle drain at night is like 1-2% over 6-8 hours. I don't have auto sync on though, so my phone stays asleep. your play services seems good for auto sync being on. mine's around 3% a day, if that.
I will try to turn off auto sync overnight and see then.
I got 6% drain for ~8h overnight.
Btw, when home with wifi on i have no issues with Google play services battery drain. But when commuting and with data usage (being on mobile data about 2h of the time) the drain is high!
I have to test more and see if it's because location history, Google fit or mobile data. Or all..
So I've turned off auto sync overnight.
It drained 6% (70% -> 64%)... So for me the same drain :/.
Another thing that i am disappointed of is the Google Play Services when on mobile data (on idle/standby). I am on LTE with good coverage.
