I bought a P769 to use internationally and have no T-mobile plan (I use Sprint in the USA). I want to get CM 10.1 on it. What are my options? From what I understand, I need to get the OTA Jellybean update in order to unlock in order to flash CM10.1.
Thanks.

There are plenty of tutorials available. Read a bit.
You will need to have T-Mobile unlock the device for non-T-Mobile sim cards.

You don't need OTA Jelltbean to unlock bootloader and flash CM10.1, but you need a unlock code to unlock the network/SIM lock to use other SIM than T-Mobile. You can buy the unlock code from eBay.
I don't believe P769 can work on Sprint.

I already unlocked the phone's SIM for international use. That's not my question. (eBay solution was used). Of course not to be used on Sprint.
Can someone at least point me to which tutorial to follow? I'll tell you what I tried [GUIDE][JB] Unlock Bootloader and FASTER Root L9 Method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2221102. When I did the adb reboot oem-unlock command, the phone just restarted. I assumed this was because I have Ice Cream Sandwich which does not have the oem-unlock command.
I am sorry if I am asking a stupid question. I assumed the guides on here required the JB update which does have an unlocked bootloader apparently.
Is this the one to use? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198114. This one suggests that we should wait for JB update. Is there any way to manually install the JB update instead of going through what seems to be a difficult procedure?

As kevev said, read a bit. Maybe a bit more.
Regarding qingz's answer to your Sprint information it is easily assumed that you were trying to use Sprint since you mentioned it. There are a lot of questions by a lot of people in a wide range of expertise. Always think of how what you ask will be perceived/interpreted by others to get the best answer for yourself.
Keep a humble attitude of learning and you'll go far, if not people won't answer our questions if we come off brash and know-it-all-ish.
To root, I just did using cmahendra's offline flashing method. It is easily on the first page of the L9 forum. It is a beast to accomplish, but go for it. Please note, when you get to step 11 you cannot "sit back with your hands folded behind your head" as it says, you have to go *back* to the original instructions and copy/paste a file. I share this because that part was not clear, and cost me about 5 or 6 hours of time with re-doing the steps over and over again.
Good luck!
Here is a tutorial for unlocking the P769 Bootloader:

Maybe an easier tutorial(I have not tried this one):

Make sure you follow to a tee, read original bl unlock thread and make sure your wifi is on and connected to internet. Wait at least 1 hour before issuing command.

EDIT: Any Idea please??
So the device is released.
And do u think the trend of bootloader unlock will follow as for any flagship lg phone or maybe different.
Any bootloader ,future development and security ..
Lg g3 - no bl unlock / only bump hack
Lg g flex 2 - no bl unlock on any variant
Lg g4 - only european variant of global model
Lg v10 - only european variant
Lg g5 - only european variant
Lg v20 - with france model as exception / dirtysanta exploit on all single sim variant
Lg g6 - ...
And oh yea ! T-mobile provides bootloader option support.
T-Mobile has had all their LG's unlockable.

Only way I'd get the LG G6, is if the T-Mobile version bootloader is unlocked, and it gets CM14.1. What are the chances of that ?

i feel i hope they still find an exploit to unlock the at&t model.
Hi everybody,
for a newcomer here: I understand there is not and will not be a chance of unlocking the bootloader and then rooting the G6 unless LG officially makes the device unlockable? Am I really very far from the actual
What are the chances of that?
I read somewhere (don't know where at this point after going over a bunch of threads) that most G5 models have never been unlocked...
Thanks!

No one is working on an unofficial way to unlock the bootloader or bypass the locked one, AFAIK, so yes, we have to wait LG to add the G6 to the official bootloader unlock program, mind that usually only the european international model will support this method.
On G5 there are three models with a bit of modding: European H850 (Official bootloader unlock), T-Mobile H830 (Tot Exploit) and US Unlocked RS988 (Official Bootloader Unlock), also the G5 SE has is present in that program but there is no TWRP ATM.
If you have an European H870 then just wait for LG, if not and if you need root then there is no ETA and no information about a possibility to obtain root.

Alright!
Thanks a lot for the reply. Seems I was understanding more or less ok the situation, although as for now I lack most of the technical knowledge.
I own a H870 so well, looks like we just need to hope and wait
Seeing how stuff is with LG's not unlocking its devices and all I was actually pondering wether to return it or not... Got 3 days left for full refund. Love the phone but not ever rooting is a bit of a sad perspective...
I'll keep an eye on things.

What's the reasoning behind this?
Is it akin to LG's absurd decisions regarding which region gets what hardware / features?
This doesn't sit well with me, I'm used to an OEM fully supporting open development... I've had a Sony Xperia Z2 for the past 3 years and both the phone and the XDA community have been awesome.

Just look to the G5 and G4, it's all based on that.
-edit-
My fault, didn't understand well xD
Well LG is not new to this strange and stupid decision, like not selling the V20 in Europe ecc...
Wow man, quickest quote / reply I've ever had lol.
Yep, I've been reading through the V20 forum as well as here, more than 6 months after release and there's still very little development on the V20.
I think coming from Sony to LG is gonna be an eye-opener for me.

Indeed they do. But, now they strip out all the fastboot commands, which is what makes twrp & root so difficult. Same on the g5.
I personally, would like to think based on LG's previous Bootloader Unlocking... That it will hopefully only be a matter of time for the G6 to be officially Unlocked.
It is something that I personally can wait for..
But it does ask the question?... Who or what/how are the bootloader decisions made @ LG as to what handsets are given the full LG Bootloader unlocking?
I hope so, but the g5 and v20, which are close to the same in this respect, haven't been cracked since a december pacth that blocked "recowvery". There are ways to keep root from previous versions, but we have no previous version.
Edit.. EU/International variant I was talking about.
Can you guys help me, I can't root my phone because when I submitted my info to LG in order to get the unlocking code they said: "Unfortunately, your device does not support unlocking the bootloader."
I heard that there's a way through cmd to unlock unofficially.
Anyone?

All LG V30 variants can be bootloader unlocked and rooted, since mid-2018.
We don't need LG permission.
Read post #1 of the Root Sticky Guide:
ROOT YOUR V30!
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/how-to/root-v30-t3927154
It has basic explanation of process and appropriate links to follow depending on your V30 variant -- T-mobile H932 or All Others.
Thanks
I'm pretty sure the answer is no but does ANYONE know if I can root my SM-N981U? I did get the recent updates automatically and I'm currently running UI v 3.1, bootloader v 2 and android 11. If its NOT possible does anyone know if anyone's working on it? Any help would be AWESOME!! I also have no idea how to turn the bootloader off if rooting is possible so help there would be nice. Thanks in advance!
Your model number ends with "U" which indicates that it's a U.S. variant
U.S. variants always get their bootloader hard locked and can't be unlocked via regular means. Root requires that you unlock your bootloader.
There was a paid service that offered to unlock U.S. variant bootloader here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/sampwnd-usa-model-bl-unlock-info-u-u1-w.4201689/
But I'd ask first if I was you. Other than that, I don't think you'll be able to root.
