USB OTG doesn't recognize card readers (Samsung S7) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

USB OTG works for keyboard, mouse, and some USB memory. It does NOT recognize card readers or some other USB memory.
I'm trying to figure out what I need to do to be able to copy files to and from a card reader on my phone. A friend's S7 (AT&T branded instead of T-Mobile) does recognize card readers, as does another friend's S9.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
My phone:
Samsung SM-G930T
Android 8.0.0 (latest via T-Mobile)
Build #: R16NW.G930TUVSACSG1

Try to install Ex file explorer(File Explorer EX on google play store)and find out that the usb/otg device is visible there or not and check whether you are using usb drive which matches under the expandable memory size of your phone(External Memory Support
Up to 200GB for Samsung SM-G930T )
if you either cannot find the problem then try to reset your phone because it can be Software issue too..
Thanks.
contact for any help in the future.:good:

Probably it's the filesystem type of that card.

No, it's Fat32 and 2 other Galaxy S7 phones can read this card

That's a good guess, but, no, the card is FAT32 and 2 other Galaxy S7 phones can read it. The difference between the phones is the software (T-Mobile).

This 8GB card is not visible in any file explorer app. I have cleared the system cache without success.

I figure I'm in the wrong forum. I'll try in the Galaxy S7 forum instead.

Mass storage mode

Anyone come up with a solution yet for USB mass storage mode to access the external card?
I recently bought a 64gb microsd card and the SGS3 has no option for mass storage mode to access it. Trying to load lots of music files. Very frustrating
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
You're not able to open windows explorer to drag and drop you music to the SD card? When you click on your phone in windows explorer, it should open up another page to choose between your internal and external storage.
If you mean when connected to a PC, select camera mode when connected, in case the drive isnr compatible with mtp. You should be set then.
I can drag and drop. I was trying to use Double Twist program on my laptop to sync music so I have my itunes playlist intact. For whatever reason Double Twist doesn't recognize MTP or PTP connections on the sgs3.
I've run into a couple other situations with apps that don't recognize the external memory card. I think Quick Office Pro was another app I had trouble with as well.
I really miss the AOSP USB mass storage mode
Yes, not having UMS really sucks. I constantly have to switch between camera or media mode in order to transfer files. I'm 100% a custom ROM would fix this, but it should've been there out of the box. I wonder why samsung removed it.
Can't find Externel SD Card on my PHOne
I installed a 32GB external SD Card on my phone - when I plug in my computer I can see it just fine - I see T999 and Card as, connected to my computer via USB - this looked really different from how I have seen the external SD Card presented on other phones???
Plus - when I open ROOT Explorer or ES File Explorer to try to manage files on the Ext SD Card - I can't seem to find it anywhere - I can see the "SD Card" - which is the internal SD Card that comes with the phone- I have music files I have already put on that along with a ROM and Kernel Zip File that I flashed recently - and which I added prior to getting the 32GB external SD Card.
FYI - On my phone, When I go to 'Settings" Storage - I can see there is an SD Card with 29.71GB of available space (I don't have any files on it yet) - So I know the phone can recognize it - I just can't find it using any of the file explorers - is there some setting I have neglected to turn on ?
when I installed an SD card on my wifes EVO LTE I see both internal and external SD Cards - with names like SD Card - EXT SD Card -and or SDCard2 all depending on what program I was using to locate them -
on my new GALAXY SIII, right now I only see SDCard and can;t locate th external SD Card - any suggestions? (I feel like a real noob)

Yeah I gave up using DoubleTwist because of the outdated/slow support like what you are having and how it doesnt work well with mp3s over 10 mb. I switched to Syncr to use iTunes as my playlist manager and it works perfect. Syncr had support for the S3 almost the next day.

Mass Storage mode has been removed. Samsung now uses multimedia transfer or camera transfer (or something close to that). Mass storage is no longer an option in the drop down menu.

Awesome - thanks - I feel like such a noob - and I should have been able to figure that out - it was just so different than other I had seen. By the do you know if CWM will recognize the External SD Card? (on my wife's EVO LTE I could choose which of the two SD Cards I wanted to flash with - is there any wayt to that with CWM and or does TWRP work with this phone?
Thanks for the help - it is appreciated

Never heard of that program but it sounds like something I'll try out. I always used Double Twist in the past just because it imported iTunes playlist flawlessly. Sammy unfortunately takes away the AOSP mass storage mode. Sucks! :crying:
Thanks for this suggestion. I'll give it a go :good:

I do have the latest samsung drivers, but unfortunately not all programs or apps recognize the MTP and PTP options that samsung forces us to use

Is it "iSyncr" perhaps??? I tried a google search of just "syncr" and I'm having trouble finding it.
man that sucks... Looks like we have to wait for a port for a mod on the I9300 forums.
found this thread in the i9300 forums:

Unfortunately it only works for the international version (already tried it). I would hope that something like this could be created/ported for the US variants. I'd do it myself, but this kind of stuff is way over my head
Maybe one of our great devs could make this happen???

yes, you can use CWM (ROM Manager) to flash ROMs on the external card (although I prefer booting into Recovery and flashing the zip files manually).
Root Explorer Problem
I am having a similar problem. My phone recognizes my external SD card (64 GB Sandisk Ultra).
I can transfer files from my computer to my ExtSD via usb.
When I go in to my my files on my phone it shows ExtSD Card and SD Card, but root explorer, ES file, and Astro will not show ExtSD.
I have been looking all over for a solution but have yet to find one.
I finally realized what going to mnt/extsdCard meant. Feel pretty dumb.
In case people haven't seen, there is now a way to mount the external card in mass storage mode for US/LTE variants of the SG3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768752
It won't let me see hidden folders in camera or media sharing mode. I hide folders with a "." in front of it, so like /.Wallpapers/ won't show up. Any way to fix this without renaming it?

USB connecting from GS III to OS X Mountain Lion

Hey guys,
I remember when I had Galaxy S II before, I could connect my phone by using USB Mass storage or something, but now I can't even find a mod or anything to the GS III when I wish to transfer from my mac to GS III. I'm tired of switching windows all the time just for either transfering a mp3 file, or a video.
Anyone know how to solve this problem?
Thanks!
Anyone?
Seriously, no one know the answers?

http://www.android.com/filetransfer/
I just opened a thread about this myself (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1824057). I can't get filetransfer to detect the phone at all (using 10.8) and usb tethering doesn't work
Hi Guys,
Android File Transfer & Kies both seem to have broken.
The only way i have found is by using SGS3 Easy UMS to mount your ExtSD Card to your mac then transfer the files from ext to int on your phone if need be.

[Q] Can't use usb as a storage device using card reader

Hello, I am having a problem getting my galaxy tab 10.1 to recognize a usb flash drive I have connected via an adapter. I know it works because it detected a wireless mouse I connected to it, and it shows up when I use dmesg or lsusb in the terminal. The thing is that none of the file explorers I've used (Es, Astro) are able to detect the files I have on it. The usb drive is formatted to fat32; would it be more likely to detect it if I formatted it to ext3 or ext4?
Maybe you need to use this?

(Solved) Help needed to transfer files to portable HDD

Hi,
I just got the S9+ (UK model) yesterday, I've activated the OEM Unlock and it's remained on (it did reset the phone when I rebooted).
I'd ideally like to connect a SD card reader and a portable HDD via a USB hub, to transfer photos from the card reader via the phone to the HDD.
I've done this on my Note 4 (rooted and running a custom stock ROM). The portable HDD is exFat formatted.
But the S9+ isn't currently rooted.
Do I just need to root the phone, so I can adjust any read/write privileges or would I also need to install a custom (stock) ROM too, to be able to transfer files?
Thank you

Not really sure why you'd need root. I have a SanDisk SSD that I plug in via USB-C and it just shows up as a drive on the S9+.

Thank you for your help
I can get the drive to show up (it's Western Digital Elements), but if I try to copy anything to it, either from the card reader (via the phone) or from the phone itself. I get a "copy failed" type message.
It doesn't make any difference when using the hub, if it's powered or not. In the past I've always used a non powered hub.
*** EDIT ***
I decided to try the inbuilt file manager and I was able to copy and paste photos from the card reader to the portable HDD.
I was using Root Explorer (Pro version) and it always failed to copy across the files. I don't know why.
Problem solved

PC cannot detect Nano Memory

Hi.
I couldn't find a specific Nano thread with issues so post it here as I am using with my P30P.
I got a Nano memory card + official Huawei USB reader so I could transfer my music and other things before my phone arrived.
When I connect the reader the laptop is detected and shows 2 drives - nano mem and standard sd - however my laptop just does not detect the nano memory when it is in the reader.
The drive letter stays greyed out.
I do not find anything online about this specific issue, I wondered if I would need to format it in my phone first but that doesn't make a difference.
Anyone have issues?
(in the end I copied my files laptop>usb stick>phone USB C connector > file manager to copy and paste but it was an extra step I could do without).

Yup, I tried this but no luck.
It's odd, the usb stick works with normal SD, the nano works in my phone fine but doesn't get detected in the stick.
I can't try in another laptop as my work one has USB drives blocked
Wonder if the nano card uses an unknown file format. Will probably need to be formatted in the phone. When my note 4 originally came out, that's what I had to do.

Yeah I wondered this too, I'll try it again and see if it picks it up.
Will also try my old Teclast dual boot tablet and if it can detect in windows via USB OTG to the reader.
