Question about Canadian root ability - LG G8X ThinQ Questions & Answers

Knowing that LG Canada like to block any access to the bootloader, based on previous experiences with older LG phones, what are the chances that LG might leave this phone rootable, so we can remove bloatware, and maybe even try to install more vanilla versions of Android onto this device.
Really liking the idea of the device, but been rather spoiled with 2 pixels back to back, and having all the updates asap is sure nice.

If you're hoping to have root access then this is not the device for you. In all likelihood no one will even be trying to gain root that knows enough about those type of exploits to even try something. You can install unwanted apps via adb though.

I have the g8x. You can unlock the bootloader if you want to. There is a toggle for OEM unlock in developer options.

Thank you both for the info!! I was hoping there might be something to both remove bloatware, and also HOPEFULLY (!!) get a more vanilla Android experience, which it's looking like I can somewhat do!
After seeing more videos on how the software works, I'm thinking it looks like you need the LG skin to be able to fully utilize the 2nd screen, which is the whole point of the phone.
So, next step is to pop into a local store and try to get my hands on one in the flesh and see if it's what I'm looking for.

That toggle in developer options is not what you think it is. The device is locked down tight. Root will likely never happen. Almost every device as of android 8 has that toggle but few can actually be unlocked

Ohhhhh, okay, so the OEM unlock is more for allowing the device to be CARRIER unlocked as opposed to bootloader unlocked (presuming I'm reading this correctly)?

No it's still for bootloader unlocking. But it's really just there for show. So for example a 1+ that doesn't have a locked bootloader; in order for the fastboot cmd to actually work that switch must be in the on position. But if a device has a locked bootloader, often that switch is still there but it won't actually do anything. It's somewhat confusing but that's just how it is now. For me I buy LG devices for their features and theme system. Regardless of what many say it really does have the best and most advanced theming system out of box. I have a theme partnership with samsung too and lg is light years ahead of them.

[Help] ROM Manager questions.

I downloaded the free version of ROM manager expecting a lot of new neat things. After exploring things such as the free roms, i eventually paid for the app. When i look to download roms from the premium selection there are non to be downloaded. i see the same free roms as before. Im not sure whats going on but i wanted to get the better "paid" roms like cyanogen otherwise i wasted money purchasing the app.

Well, you might have wasted your money for two reasons..
1. There is no official build for Cyanogen on the atrix (meaning it is not supported officially by someone on the Cyanogen team (website)) but we do have a pre-beta build that is supported by quit-a-few developers from XDA. The Atrix Developers Team
2. ROM manager is just "easier" (somewhat) to install ROMS but you can get all the same ROMS listed here on XDA for free just by navigating to the website on your phone, download, then boot into CWM and flash.
I don't believe in buying an app if I can do it myself unless, it offers some very useful tools.
I believe the only thing that the paid version gets you - is the ability to initiate backups from the app itself and to install/update the superuser.apk. There may be one or two other things im forgetting - as far as ROMS - there are no "paid" ROMS.... at least none I know of.... including CyanogenMod
then i must say i feel like i want to pursue a refund from my carrier. i didnt get anything from buying the app, so i must have gotten ripped off.

[Q] In which state shall I let my phone be serviced by SE?

So, I contacted Sony Ericsson about some problems with a burnt in screen, and after a short conversation (which took a week per e-mail for them to respond after I contacted the marketing office via Twitter ), they will pick a date to pick up my phone at home

Now my question is: In which state shall I 'give away' my phone?
Things that obviously need to be fixed:
Lock bootloader (unlocked it using SE website, so no DRM...)
Remove root (what's the best way?)
Factory reset/flash firmware again with PC Companion/SEUS?
Have I forgotten anything or do you know a better method?
Have you got your phone serviced before?
Please let me know in the comments.
Hope I get a new LCD panel!
Edit: they estimate the time it takes at about 10(!) days. And I don't have a backup phone... (Can send texts and read them online though)

I am afraid that your warranty is void once you have unlocked bootloader. They will check your IMEI on their system before they disassemble your phone. Remember you have submitted your IMEI to get unlock code.

But you can request a unlock code, and then just store it, without unlocking you phone. See step 16.
And I hope they don't care about that too much, as the problems is a burnt in screen, not a overheated processor or a software problem.

If you are lucky they will replace your scren without any question (like in my case with a notebook from MSI that i have overclocked and they give me another one new) but all depends on the guy in wich hand is for repair.
So i wish you GOOD LUCK

Yeah, I hope so. I've read that HTC doesn't bother too much if your phone is rooted. I don't know how this is with SE. I will update it when I get my phone back. (If the Customer Service will reply to my last e-mail of a week ago )

what is going with rooting i am sick and tired of all this

I don't know from where to start, why is it these days that rooting is such a pain 257 is still non directly routable so I guess the new firmware will take ages to root, when I dumped the iPhone to android it was because I wanted to enjoy freedom from a locked system. Now I see this going on with android and more noticeable with this sony z ultra. I am tired and really regret buying this phone.

Its simple. If you want root... and can't do it, then don't upgrade the firmware.
There is a mind set that people have... (me included somewhat)...
... its that we want 'updates' and think that it going to make our device so much better or faster than before. Reality is that despite a couple of fix's that we have had recently, the updates are not essential. or have not improved our experience dramatically. There is no need to update... its not going to give you much.
for me root is essential. I wont be updating to 290 unless I can get my ROM rooted and full working.
I know I'm ranting.... but when in Rome... :victory:

LORDDDDD man I love your replies to my threads, I am starting to enjoy that you watch all my posts.
But seriously is that going to be the trend for getting root from now on that we have to wait for long times. I hope not. As root is very important for me as I use gl2sd app to move my big games to external sd.
why Is rooting a certain device more difficult than others, is because we don't have too many developers that bought our device. I just would like to know.
why for example samsung devices almost instantly get root?

You want unlocked phone right? Unlock bootloader then, as simple as it gets.
Samsung is different because:
1. A lot of consumer which are hackers too, there
2. Samsung device is battery removable, indicating that it is much easier to access the device hardware wise. It was easy to semi-'unlock' my Xperia Ray due to removable battery.
3. AFAIK with all this, it seems that Samsung's devices is not as secure as Sony's devices. Have heard about rootkit virus in Desktop? Yeah the same problem came into mind with a rootable device which is insecure to hacker attack to alter the system partition.
So the only way out if you MUST have ROOT is to unlock the bootloader (i.e. it is purely your device, no Sony warranty will cover it). Unless some extreme hacker more extreme than our friend DoomLord could find the hole while keeping bootloader locked, we can wave goodbye to root in the mean time. Even if the mentioned miracle happens, Sony will quickly patch the hole for you

Lord Manhattan is not the one you should worry about but rather moderators...
Root is achieved through exploits as they do represent a security breach in the OS. In other words, root is a double edged sword as giving permissions to the wrong app for the wrong thing could lead to bad consequences. Because companies don't exactly feel like being liable for leaving a "vulnerable device" in the shelves, they normally tend to tighten things like this up.
Devs on xda (and the entire Android community for that matter) work very hard to bring you the exploits. Getting impatient and ranting about your discontent will only make you look like self entitled and will do nothing but to give an open entry for people who love the community to flame you to smithereens...
With that being said, I am closing your thread. Please don't post like this anymore.... it is entirely useless and you will do nothing other than piss people off.

Sure looks like a copy of the Sprint G3 info screen that's been photoshopped. Also, its really unnecessary to start a vague new thread to call attention to yourself when we have threads on this topic.
I like the Goonies reference.
Nope
That Google+ is my original post. It is in no way altered or photoshopped. As mentioned in my post there may be a reason behind the OTA update. If you'd like more proof to verify please let me know, I'd be happy to oblige..
Contact a developer....you might be able to pull a factory image
@Technical12, follow the steps at the end of the first post. http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/reference-stock-img-files-t2966958 and send the files over.
Downloading ABD and I'll attempt to pull the image. Wish me luck...I'm not well versed in this.

Nice. I have been pestering Verizon literally every day for two weeks asking when they are going to finish adding their bloatware, supercookies, and spyware and push the update. Finally today they banned me from all their twitter accounts. :highfive:
Read the comments. People are confirming they got the update. This pleases me greatly!

Just wish someone would pull their system so we can confirm it. Been on CM12 but wanted all stock features back. Really missing the trusted devices feature.
In case anyone is wondering the guy got a replacement phone which downloaded the update when he turned on the phone. He said he is going to try to pull the system image tomorrow morning.

InB4 people start loosing root and the ability to bump then start whining like a bunch of little gurlz.
#justsayin
I've got my popcorn ready for this upcoming sh*t storm of ill advised LP upgrades People need to practice patience. Updates are usually a bad thing.
But yet...people will take that OTA...seek out that OTA (that they previously had blocked)...and then complain about root being broken and not being able to revert back. Should be a good show :good:
I guess it is starting a slow leak out.... LG Support tool shows that I have an update when I first start the tool app, and then quickly flashes back to "your software is up to date".
I don't think anybody needs to worry about losing root just yet. Other than here, I haven't seen any news about a Verizon G3 update. I'd take this thread with a huge grain of salt.
Well as long as revert is possible were good,! Will see though ,this could be the update that stops that
We see this with every update on every device. People jump to take the OTA, then are mad at manufacture and carrier because they are unable to root or unlock bootloader. Rollback may not be possible with LP update. Look at the Note 3 (where I came from), once you took the 4.4.2 OTA, you were beat for rollback. Chainfire said awhile back how complicated root will be with LP. I will wait for the devs to deliver a pre rooted rom before I ever take an OTA.
LISTEN TO THE WARNINGS IF YOU WANT/NEED ROOT!
My software is official. I'm just not versed in pulling images. And as easy as most say it is I'm not able to do it. If someone would provide some help I could have the image up in an hour.

Hello. Does anyone here have the Visible Mobile version of the borneo? Or does anyone know if the Visible Mobile version is eligible for bootloader unlock? It uses Verizon Network, so I'm very cautious of it.

You could just sign up on motorola and try it. You bought the phone and paid outright for it. Motorola doesn't restrict that stuff. they don't use special software for their phones its just the generic retus software.....

They do if you buy from some carriers like At&T, Verizon...
My moto g8 power is visible and I'm running an unlocked bootloader on it using lineage. I bought mine direct from visible. I doubt they changed from retus with the 2021 version....
I am a visible subscriber and I requested a network unlock, though I don't think I really need that. Will let you know later as I'm about to mod this Motorola g power. They use a third party to finance the phones so, no reason they would bind you too it (no contract).

You're talking about network sim unlock. The discussion in the thread so far is referring to unlocking the device's bootloader so as to allow custom image flashing and other advanced instructions for modding.
Yes I know what you are referring to. It does not require anything special except flipping a switch in settings. Don't know why I posted the other. Brain fart.
