Hi.
I bought this cell phone because of the cost-benefit ratio, and because I am particularly interested in the camera and the battery life.
Able to expect more from the camera, but I am surprised at the high ISO level that must be added, or the slow shutter of the main camera, compared for example, with a redmi note 7 in my house, and with the front camera .
Attached 2 photos, of the same object, one rear camera and one front. Is it normal for the rear camera to more than double the ISO to capture the same light as the front?

Thanks for your replies
It's crappy implementation of HDR in the stock camera app. You can disable HDR and shot the same photo again, I bet it will have much appropriate ISO. You have two options - either disable HDR and adjust exposure manually, or if you rely on HDR doing the job for you then install some gcam port.

Thanks for your comment.
I think those photos already have hdr disabled, but anyway, I did a new test without hdr and I get the same, double ISO as the front to achieve the same light.
The same happens with GCam.
I am comparing front and rear cameras of the same cell because it is a test that another can do. What really worries me is that indoors, to take pictures of my daughter, they always come out with little sharpness, since it takes with very slow speeds compared to my wife's Redmi Note 7 (1/60 vs 1/25 for the same shot)
I've just tried taking photos of the same object with the stock camera app, rear camera in daylight indoor conditions.
Photo Mode HDR On - 1/20s, ISO 930
Photo Mode HDR Off - 1/25s, ISO 573
Pro Mode Shutter/ISO set to Auto - 1/25s, ISO 559
I have no Gcam installed at the moment. But when I was playing with Gcam HDR resulting photos were having much lower ISO.

What happens if you take out the same object and same conditions with front camera?
I very much appreciate the work that you've had.
I've got funny results
Front camera, HDR on - ISO 186
Front camera, HDR off - ISO 489
Front camera with HDR off produces similar ISO. But I'd like to point out that when you shoot with rear camera the stock app performs desampling 48 to 12 megapixels, while with front camera it seems there is no desampling and stock app works with 32 megapixel images.

All in all I think post-processing algorithms of the stock camera are a bit weird. Probably there were compromises made to avoid performance penalties. If you wanna take "true" photos use Pro mode, enable 48 megapixels, and manually set shutter speed, iso, exposure to conditions.
I've tried taking photos in Pro mode 48 megapixels and it had a noticeable lag, like 0.5 sec. Not ideal.
It reminded me times when I had Lumia 1020 with 41 megapixel lens. That's ridiculous to be honest, 6 years forward, more RAM, more powerful CPU and the same performance.

On another note, the camera doesn't perform too well in the dark, with pictures having a lot of noise in them.
In daylight, the PQ is the best I've seen on a smartphone, hopefully Sony releases a fix in the near future.

I will test the video later on....
As for night shots, it always takes some patience and settings to make a good one.
Yes, now that you mention it, there was once it could not focus in video mode no matter how long I held the half-press. I switched to photo mode to focus, then back to video mode again.
I've been having issues with focus in video mode. It seems to be hunting in light conditions, and oddly when the face detection is working (the box appears around the face) it still fails to focus on the subject.
The continuous auto focus on this phone is intentionally slow, this is way better then an instant focus that constantly zooms in and out to hold the focus which looks horrible.
My other phone Droid 3 does this noticeably, constantly focusing slightly zooming in and out to maintain the quality.
If you view something with a darker colour then its surroundings, the zoom will focus correctly shortly after.
-smc
I'm used to slow auto focus, but the problem I have is failing to focus at all. It identifies the heads, but the heads remain out of focus. The focus hunts, and will gain focus for a second or so, then revert back to blur-o-vision... I the most recent situation, the subject was against a white background so nothing to confuse the sensor.
Talking about the camera, i saw a video review and the phone being reviewed had touch focus how did they set it like that?

When in the camera, press your menu button and you will get an additional menu come up with the option for Capturing method. It's in there.

I had smile detection on so the focus option was grey out. Thanks for that
Im also having issues with the camera not focusing as it should. Taking a photo can sometimes take up to 8-10 seconds when I have to repress the camera button. Is that a software issue or hardware? In other words, should I return the phone to the store or wait for the ICS to (hopefully) fix it?
if your video is blurry while recording try to press camera shutter half way and it will focus automatically
if there is lot of noise while taking picture try to change focus mode from the face dectection to the single mode focus and that will improve the picture quality especially if not taking a poirtrate picture!!
--------------------------
there is no rapid focus in the xperia s the focus is half automatic so this is work the same way as the focus in camera before half way camera shutter and it will dramatically improve the quality of the video
anyone else not able to take a pic from the home screen by just holding down the camera button? its works in standby mode but not in homescren mode..
I had this problem I went onto the camera app n then went into settings and changes the focus setting to single focus n my problem is solved hope that helps some people

I can only speak for myself. All my shots taken with the official Samsung camera app. If I apply a filter, I only use apps on my Alpha. For those shots I used a filter in Camera360. The only other editing apps I use are Adobe Photoshop Express, VSCO Cam and Snapseed. All android apps, and really only a few filters.
Thanks for your explanation gavinfabl!

Only modification i have done is cropped and sharpened the first pic in picasa (it is called google photos or something) app. rest of pics are taken with stock camera app, because it seems to choose shutter speed and ISO more adequately than other apps. If someone knows app, that would prefer longer shutter over higher ISO please suggest.

Picture Stabilization because it appears to
leave shutter open longer primarily for low light shots but can be used other ways.
I think the trick may be to put phone down or Tripod mini etc and voice actuate the Camera to avoid motion on longer exposures.
Everyone else REALLY nice , sharp photos !
Some think it is the exact same sensor as S5 but lowered to 12 megapixels in firmware.
Is it sharper than S5 ?
Here is an example of using picture stabilization AND moving exposure up to +2 for a night shot in Miami Beach- it was much darker than it appears here and I rested phone on Latte Cup and voice activated shutter because this is a long exposure ( HDR must be off to go up to +2 exposure) .

With Alpha are you using a Tripod to get it so sharp and possibly using picture stabilization for longer exposures in daylight even though not needed ?
Or are the filters sharpening in edits ?
Thanks.

No tripod needed with the phone. It's got a good camera to start off with.
Some say Alpha is same Sensor as S5 but clocked down to 12 megapixels in firmware.
Do you think S5 is more detailed and sharp than Alpha ?
And will S6 be in your hands soon so I can get your opinion on that one ?
Hi,
I was little bit dissapointed with no option to shoot in RAW mode.
BUT...
I installed my fav camera app SNAP CAMERA and inside photo option i found possibility to switch on RAW (DNG format).
and guys...it works !!! I processed DNG files with Adobe Camera Raw and realy its much more better quality ...dynamic range, noise, shadows, over exposure, higlights etc. Everyrhing can be processed with right editor and behavied like true RAW format...
So try this solution

Open camera is a great choice . it doesn't have compitability issues like snap
Sent from my KIW-L22 using Tapatalk
But, I think, open camera don't use booth camera chip, only one. You can see it very well in low light condition
Can anyone confirm that any 3rd party camera app (Snap Camera, A better Camera etc.) uses both lenses? I tried to cover one lense and compared the pictures and barely noticed a difference on Snap Camera and Open Camera which suggests that they are only using the main lense.

Second camera is not used for RAW capture. Shooting with both lenses requires the software to blend the 2 captures into a composite image which can only be done as a jpeg, just like any other in-camera effect. I'm using RAW capture in emui 5.0 and frankly I don't see much improvement by shooting RAW on this phone. In fact I think you get better low-light and better HDR performance by shooting with both cameras as a jpeg.
In EMUI 5.0 stock camera has RAW option in "Pro photo" mode.
Simply shooting in RAW format doesn't make your photos look better than jpeg. But editing a RAW photo can help extract much more details as you can seen in the OP example.

Exactly, this will output a regular .dng file which many editor apps like Snapseed can process for you; even the built-in gallery app will do some raw editing adjustments. It gets you far more data in the highlights/shadows to pull out of your photo when editing exposure and color in post.
Sorry to derail this, but I was wondering.
I have a P9 Lite. Several 3rd party camera apps can shoot raw dng, but I'd like to enable that option in the stock camera app. I notice pro mode on the P9 and other higher specced emui 5 phones allows dng capture so I had an idea.
I went out on a limb and tried editing /system/emui/lite/prop/local.prop and set ro.build.hw_emui_lite.enable=false, however I still can't find how to enable raw dng capture in the stock camera app.
Any ideas, tips?

Hello.
I'd like to ask if you can take 40 MP photos with post-processing turned OFF, which can be normally done with Open Camera or Snap Camera. I mean photos which are in JPG or PNG format right away, so I wouldn't have to manually convert and edit RAW/DNG photos.
Thank you!

Mate20pro main camera is only 40MP. No way it can take a 48MP photo.
Main camera 40MP
Ultra wide angel camera 20MP
Telephoto camera 8MP
Thanks for correcting me, but that wasn't really important in my question.
No. 40 Mpix output only in RAW format, no JPG, PNG, TIFF... If you want 40 Mpix, you must develop the raw file with Adobe Camera Raw or another similar tool.

If you change the resolution to 40 MP in the camera settings - you can take 40 MP photos in most camera modes (except in Night, Aperture and Portrait).
In the PRO mode if you turn off RAW, the output file is 40 MP JPG file.

Is post-processing turned OFF when shooting JPGs in PRO mode?
No. There is basic post-processing (no AI) in PRO mode as in every other camera - noise reduction, vignette removal, lens correction, exposure settings and other. The first image is direct save DNG to JPG, the second is direct JPG from the camera.

Shooting mode available: Photo (default), Night, Video, Portrait, Pro, Extra HD, Pano, Macro, Slo-Mo, Time-Lapse, Dual-View Video, Sticker, Text Scanner, Soloop Templates (this won’t appear if camera is launched from lock screen)
Shooting mode available in Camera app
While it has so many modes, I have not used them all yet. I took some samples under different lighting condition, indoor and outdoor, daytime and nighttime.
Let’s explore and check the result! Camera app is easy to use and pretty straightforward.
This is my default setting for Photo mode, I enable HDR AUTO and AI function, it gives me the finest photo result with sharper detail and better color reproduction.
The lens will detect the type of object inside (mine says Green Plants). The 3-dots on the top left provides more options. The google lens icon is on the bottom right for easy access. The magic wand provides various filters.
As my photos are intended for social media, I seldom use 50MP because of the storage limitation.
[Shooting with Main Camera - Photo mode]
I am doing food photography for my business in social media. And I need a good phone camera to achieve the result I want.
Under sufficient/bright lighting condition, main camera can deliver ultra-clear shots. The image quality is impressive, with sharp details and vibrant colors. AI and HDR Auto are very helpful in achieving this high-quality result even without using 50MP mode.
I notice that there is a slight improvement if 50MP mode is used. However, the file size is something to think about.
AI on VS AI off
50MP on VS 50MP off[Shooting with Extra HD Mode]
This mode can cater up to 5x zoom. And there are filters available to use to further enhance the image result. I feel satisfied with the result without using any filter, but having the filter that matches with the final result I want will save time in editing.
[Shooting with backlight]
Normally, at this shooting condition, the object would be dark so the background could be seen OR the object could be seen, and the background would be in extremely bright condition. But now…
I am impressed on how the result turns out. The object and the background have the same exposure. Also, the portrait mode blurs out the background nicely.
Well done!
[Shooting in dim-light condition]
Don’t be fooled by the lightings, since the actual condition is pretty dim. And I notice the result is good for all zoom. Any slight movement during photo taking will affect the result in this kind of light condition. In my photos, some details on the edges are not too sharp for normal and wide-angle, I think I did move slightly.
