LG Dual Screen Launcher - LG G8X ThinQ Questions & Answers

I have an idea
You can try installing some launchers (like Niagara for example)
And then set it to launch the app launcher automatically when opening the dual screen. Hope it works for you

Just gave it a shot. It does work as far as the launcher opening on the left screen, but pressing home on the left side takes you back to launcher 2.
This means you'd have to turn off the screen and turn it back on or close and open the case and reunlock the phone to get it to open.
Great idea though, I thought it would force it open on the main screen, but nope!

Some launchers work like opening an app. Niagara is one of them. You can make a shortcut for it, in floating bar?

I use Nova Launcher on the main display and quickly 3-finger swipe apps to the Dual Screen if needed. My Dual Screen homescreen only has widgets on them., I don't use the launcher on it.

Could you use launcher hijack to make it work? Like the Kindle Fires solution for the stock launcher replacement, that opens the launcher of choice upon pressing the home button?

Launcher Hijack does not work, I just tried it.

I use Microsoft's launcher. And usually Swiftkeys. You would think with Duo coming out in a year these products would support this phone. I'm a little disappointed they don't yet.

I found a slightly quirky but reliable method to do this. See my attachments, same launcher on both screens. The one with the notification bar is the main screen, one without is dual screen.
It works with home launchers with a way to get to their home screen via shortcuts. I use nova
Instructions:
0. Make sure you have navigation bar selected instead of gestures in phone settings>display>navigation bar
1. Install App Cloner (the real one, not on Google Play) and make yourself a duplicate of nova or etc.
2. Backup your current launcher settings
3. Open and restore from backup on the second copy of your launcher
4. Install Pie Control from Google Play or etc
5. You can setup pie control as you like. You'll likely have the home button setup as one of your gestures. But this home button will only of course open a single launcher, you can't change it to use a different launcher on each screen. So, add another gesture that you'll use for the second screen.
6. On your selected gesture, set what it does to shortcut>nova (it will be the second nova on the list)>default page (this is the main home screen of your launcher).
7. To get to your launcher on the second screen, just tap your second screen, then do your gesture you set to the shortcut on your main screen. You'll see your fave launcher open on the second screen.
I know this isn't ideal, but it works great for me and if there's still anybody out there looking for this, here you go.

[Q] Screen switching widget?

I would like to know if there is an app/widget that I can use to jump between home screens which aren't next to each other?
For example, if I number my home screens from 1 -> x from leftmost to rightmost screen. I would like to be able to press a widget which allows me to jump from screen 1 to screen 4, or 5, or 6 e.t.c. without having to slide through 2 and 3 and so on.
I presume that this may have to be part of a custom launcher which is no problem. I have bought most of them now anyway so don't mind if I have to switch to another.
Tasker should let you do this. i tried to test it but I use ADW ex, doesn't seem to be supported.
Go Home
Go to the current system Home Screen.
If the Page parameter is greater than 0, the home screen is requested to start on that page.
At the time of writing, Launcher Pro and Car Dock Home (v3) supported this option. If your Home Screen app doesn't support it, you could contact the developer and refer them to Tasker's developer page: tasker.dinglisch.net/developer.html for info on how to include it.

Most of the launchers, that I have used has this screen selection when swiping with 2 fingers.
One that surely has it is Zeam Launcher.
In ADW EX, you can add a link to another screen the same way you add any other shortcut. I believe when you choose Add, it's inside the top option (ADW Shortcuts?) and then at the bottom.
I have no phone, so this is subject to change
Thanks for the tips everyone. It certainly was a lot easier than I thought heh. The implementation within ADW EX is working fantastically.

Home button behaviour

The x10 mini pro has a "two-level" home screen:
the "top" hold the clock, and widgets.
the "bottom" holds the application icons.
Since there are many applications installed, the home screen extends beyond the screen width, which results in "windows", and so it is necessary to scroll left and right to see all the different "windows" and the icons they contain. When pressing the "home" button, the phone will bring up the last viewed "window" of the home screen.
Is there a way to make the "home" button always show the first (left most) "window" of the bottom home screen, namely, the left most window of the icons?.
TIA,
Mike.
In a way, yes...and in a way, no.
The screen(s) with all your apps in is known as the "app drawer". The stock launcher for the X10 Mini Pro will always do what you say, it will always go to the last viewed page of the drawer when you open it.
In theory, you could dig deep into the code of the SemcHome app and make it do what you want. I've no idea what you'd need to do, but it's theoretically possible.
The easiest way is probably just to install a different launcher. Have a look on the Market. I'm using Go Launcher Ex which does the same thing but it does let me put more app icons on one screen (I've got 16 instead of the stock launcher's 9) and you can group apps into individual folders. Or you can just hide the ones you don't need.
So this won't do exactly what you asked for, but it might give you a decent alternative.
Thanks.
Is it possible to place applications and shortcuts icons on the "top" home screen, say in the same screen as the clock?.
Thanks,
Mike
Yes, bascially. Although, again, you'll still need a different launcher for this.
A lot of phones will let you do this from stock but, because ours has a smaller screen, we can only put stuff into the four corners. Download a new launcher and you can cover your screen with app's and shortcuts as much as you want!
You can add shortcuts to the homescreen by long holding an App in the app draw and dragging away from its location to the Homescreen
Thanks all for replying.
ryant: The long press and drag method isn't working on my x10MP with android 2.1 .
I can move the app icon around in the app drawer (left and right screens), but not "up" to where the clock and other widgets live. Have you tried this on an x10MP with a stock launcher?.
Also, I've now found the "multicon" app which allows to place multiple widgets on screen, which is a good enough solution for me.

Mods wanted for home button

I won't be using S Voice a whole lot, and would rather repurpose my home key double click to something useful - such as recent apps/multitasking (as this would be much faster than holding home down). Is there a mod for this?
Also, I'd like to double click home to wake phone and unlock screen - any mods for this?
I'm on Omega v6.0, just flashed it.
Also, I'd like to do something about the wake-up delay. When pressing power or home to wake the screen up, there's a wait of a good half a second - I want it instantaneous, like my old phone was.
Any ideas?
Bump.
Afaik this delay is caused by waking up from deep sleep. There isnt much you can do, unless you want to force your phone to stay awake it will drain the battery quickly, though.
Try apex or nova launcher..
For multitasking try "wave launcher".not an ordinary launcher, check market
Editr try gesture launcher
Edit 2: or dock4droid also cool 4 multitasking

Bump for this.
I'd really like to be able to open the multitasking menu, with a single press of the home button.
Home2 shortcut in the market is.pretty useful.for key shortcuts like double click home or double click search key. Check it out

Home2 Shortcut seems like it should work (if and only if S Voice is disabled). If you have Nova Launcher installed, task switching is one of the shortcuts Nova has (so within Home2 Shortcut when you choose the app you'd like to be run, choose "Shortcut->Nova->Task Switcher"). If you don't use Nova as your normal launcher, I might be concerned about whether this causes Nova to be loaded into memory--this is a very simple test, but I can't do it because Nova is my launcher so it's already in memory.
The above technique has two disadvantages: you lose the ability to press "home" when you're already at the launcher (it does nothing), and there's an added delay before opening the launcher. I mitigate this delay by setting the double-tap time to a fast setting.
Another idea I had that might work:
- Uninstall S Voice (I think you can also rename the .apk to .apkbackup).
- Install a task-switching app (there's a very simple one on the market but it's not free--it just triggers normal Android task switching)
- Decompile the task-switching app
- Change the app namespace to S Voice's namespace
- Recompile and install the modified app.
This might make double-home-tap automatically trigger task switching without the disadvantages that come with using Home2 Shortcut. Unfortunately, I haven't yet decompiled/recompiled an app, so I probably can't give this a try until the weekend.
Edit: If technique 2 works and we want to share it as a mod, our only choice is to rewrite the app. There's no way we can condone pirating somebody's paid app.

Multitask Shortcut. Perhaps there are other apps that do this, but I haven't looked.
But it's still at least 2 button press. I'm lazy, so I'll continue with "wave launcher" that's just a swipe over screen and all your selected apps appear.

I found a way to swipe into multitasking, so I won't bother with the Home button:

Home button solution for gestures and 3rd party launchers

All you have to do is install this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.home.button.bottom and set it up. Even survives a reboot. Only thing is you push it, not slide up. All other gestures stay the same.

Hi Justin, thanks so much for all the help so far on this forum. But whole installing this app you suggested, I might have stumbled into a native fix for the "third party launched breaks swiping home button" thing.
Like you, I went into adb and deleted stock Oppo launcher in favor of a custom one (I'm using nova), and I too encountered the swipe home button problem where the phoje just goes to this greyed out screen. But while fiddling with the navigation settings, I chose the other swiping method (the one where you DON'T swipe up and hold to bring up multi task), aka #4 "back to the left" option. And after choosing that, my swipe navigations work normally even when running nova. Home swipe works fine.
Maybe the bug is just for the "back at both sides" swiping options?

Thanks a lot for that. Makes everything so much better.
You are the hero dude!
Hi, I have changed my default launcher without using an app, or using adb to remove the default launcher.
After installing the launcher, I've gone to settings, app management, default app management. The option to change my default launcher is there.
All the gesture options, and navigation buttons work, with no black screens or anything. I'm pretty chuffed.
Thanks

That's only available for the global model us fools who purchased the Chinese model are screwed and we cannot change this in settings.
How do you change the type of gesture navigation, I can't find those settings
How?

How do you do this?

Launcher choice

I didn't like how the stock launcher only gave you only a few applications to choose from on the top screen when you were in 'T' mode. I played around with Nova Launcher and changing the options to auto rotate seems to work pretty well.
Let me know how you did it. And if you came up with a better solution.
1. Too screen
2. Bottom screen
3. Top screen (app drawer)
@kaluna00
Same here.
I always select auto rotate for any phone w/Nova Launcher.
Another tool I use is Ultimate Rotation Control (Pro) from the Google Play Store. It has a basic default selection & you can customize on a per-app basis.
Been a good while since the app was last updated, but, it's still 100% functional.
This phone would be a perfect candidate for having Nova Launcher as the default home UI, as Razer has with their two phones. Naturally, it'd need a bit of tweaking for the 2nd display, but, anything other than the stock Launcher would be an improvement.

It allows for orientation on a per-app basis.
Basically, you select a default orientation, whatever that may be (say, automatic). Then, if you want certain apps to remain in something else, say, portrait mode, you can select that app to ignore the default orientation & remain locked in portrait mode.
So, the app isn't really necessary for Nova Launcher, but, a nice tool to have for the rest of your apps.
After a factory data reset. I was playing more with the stock launcher. Hi believe it is a little bit snappier. I'm not a fan of the carousel on the top screen. However, you can swipe up and get into the app drawer on the top screen. You also still can double tap to turn the screen off. Without going into an administrator lock where fingerprints do not work (you need to use the pattern or your code)
Microsoft Launcher is good and feels native if you aren't a fan of carousel mode. The icons will just rotate in landscape. Worth checking out.

Testing out ruthless launcher. Mostly like it. I'll play with it for a few days and let you know how it sticks.
I liked ruthless launcher, but it would not allow me to double tap off the screen unless I gave it elevated rights. I did so, but after you double tap the screen off it locks the phone and you can't activate the fingerprint sensor without hitting the power button. I also noticed that if you double tap to lock the phone and then swing it open the second screen is still unlocked and you have access to the phone. That was the deal killer for me. Back to the stock launcher.
To get out of Carousel mode when you winging the phone open. Just swipe up and you will get to your app drawer
This is my screen setup using
KLWP and the Wing launcher

Allow ruthless to be set as a second screen app. On the second screen select ruthless launcher. Then, swipe up and hold to bring up recent apps. Then pin the ruthless launcher. You should be set after that
