Faulty Fingerprint Sensor test - Sony Xperia 1 Questions & Answers

Just was reading this post on reddit, basically enter service *#*#7378423#*#*, then service test, next fingerprint test, and see what is the sensor status (ok or not ok).
In my case, i have issues with the fingerprint sensor, and my status is "sensor NOT ok".

Welcome to the club. Sony sucks--I've used in glass and rear fp sensors and they're both, from a usability perspective, superior to side mounted. Sony does side-mounted anyways and messes up the hardware.

[Q] proximity sensor non existent?

Hello,it seems there is no Q&A forum for this device, so here is my doubt:
Although the tech manual for the xperia S from the sony website report a proximity sensor, I fail to find one on my phone.
There seems to be a black oval spot on the glass next to the light sensor as if some sort of sticker can be removed to install the sensor.
The light sensor seems to work, since I've seen the screen go darker and brighter, but when I'm in a call and put the phone in my ear the screen wont shut off like in my old SGS nor will it turn on when I move the phone away from my face.
are your phones like mine? or is mine a defective unit?
I guess ur device has something wrong with it.
By the way; did u place a screen protector?? Coz if u did that may be the problem!
I think the light and proximity sensor are the same.
There is something wrong with your phone, maybe you should try to flash a new firmware.

Hi,
Mine works fine...
Do this:
1>Go to dialpad and type *#*#7378423#*#* (*#*#SERVICE#*#*)
2>A menu pops up in that u will see service tests select that
3>Then scroll down and select Proximity Switch
4>Initially it will display as OFF. Now u place your finger or hand on the Proximity Sensor, then the value of Proximity Switch on the screen will change to ON.
If this is working then the sensor is just fine u need to update the firmware else u need to go and replace the piece IMO though.
Thank you all for the feedback.
I used the service menu to check the sensors ...
indeed the proximity sensor is always off, even when I put my finger on it, it seems someone forgot to remove the black paint from behind the glass, but I will update it anyway to make sure before returning it.

sensor is IR, so darkened window is normal for it. but if it have always closed windows - than its status must be always ON. so, most likely you have faulty sensor (or bug in firmware)

Hi,
Exactly it should be showing status as ON if it's covered replace the piece as soon as possible

If it was covered by the glass/ cover it would show OFF because the glass doesn't radiate heat like your body does.

Proximity sensor on phones does not react to heat. It have simple IR transmitter, which emits a beam, and IR sensor, which react on reflected beam.

You are right, just tested it and it seems to be a reflective sensor.
thanks for the tips, it was indeed a faulty sensor and they gave me a new phone right away .
I hope I don't get any more problems like a yellow tint :X (knock on wood with fingers crossed)

Problem with Proximity Sensor

I've been having some issues with my proximity sensor.
So, I installed stock ROM from Samsung...enter the TEST MENU...and hit the SENSOR.
For what I've read, if I covered the sensor, the screen should go green and the device should vibrate.
However, my screen is already green as soon as I press the SENSOR test key and vibrates without stopping at all right from the start.
The results shown is....UNcovered: 17 covered: 251
Is this a faulty sensor? Can I calibrate it?
Is there any solution?
PS: Is there any cooked rom with the ability to turn down the ability to turn off the screen when making a call, such as it is on stock rom's?
Are you using a screen protector or a protective case that can possibly affect the sensor? If yes, try removing whatever you can remove. See if the problem persists.
I remember buying a certain protective case from Otterbox, I think it was commuter, that can trigger or affect the proximity sensor because the cut of the silicon case was not big enough. Good thing I was able to return and replace it with something else.
Dust or dirt can also affect the sensor so try checking that.
Hi there.
First of all, thanks for your answer.
I don't use screen protector or any kind case.
My S2 is quite good, without marks or scratches of any kind.
Can't tell if there is any dust inside....
Any thoughts?

You can try the following:
- Proximity Sensor Calibration
- Using a vacuum, try to vacuum the upper part of S2.
- Use an adhesive tape once or twice to clean the sensor and front camera area.
- Remove the battery for 2-5 mins.
- If you have Viber, uninstall it then check (though I think they got this fixed since late of 2012).
- Try another battery.
- Flash a new ROM (some ROMs have it, some don't, but look for Call Settings (by accessing phone icon) > 'Always use Proximity' then uncheck the option).
If problem still persists, then it's possible that it's indeed a faulty sensor (though it seems not the case at the moment). It's up to you if you want to send it for repair/replacement or you can disable it if you're phone is rooted.
Download Android Sensor Box and Hardware Disabler
Run Android Sensor Box.
Choose proximity sensor.
Look for the square icon near the bottom left of the screen, press and remember the proximity sensor's driver name.
Run Hardware Disabler.
Scan or whatever the option is there.
Look for the proximity sensor's driver name then select.
Reboot.
A confirmation will pop asking to disable the Sensor, select yes.
For ROM suggestions (with an option to disable proximity sensor when calling), you should probably asked around on some ROM non-development topics if they have it. Also, check if the ROM is stable to prevent more problems.

Hall element magnet sensor for smart cases

In the service menu: *#*#7378423*#*# in the dialer, for this device I have found that Hall element sensor is an option to be tested however when I test it nothing happens. Holding a magnet or a case with a magnet does nothing. I wouldnt imagine that option being there if there was no such sensor within the device. The option was never apparent on my Z2 which I believe didnt have the sensor which would make sense. The Z3 has the sensor and thats a much older device than the X. I would imagine there would be a sensor embeded in this device. If possible could anyone see if it works for them. If not could the feature be enabled in a ROM or kernel? Thanks

LG V30+: Fingerprint Sensor Component Not Passing Hardware Test

Got my screen replaced this afternoon.
When I recieved my fixed phone, my fingerprint sensor wasn't programmed.
I went to the Security Settings and went to turn it back on, but it wasn't showing an option for a Fingerprint to unlock it.
I went to the Smart Cleaning Extension, optimized my phone and then went to test the hardware and every harswarw passed except the Fingerprint Sensor.
Quick Help didn't help at all.
I dont know what to do.

Have you resolved your fingerprint problem?
I have a slightly different fingerprint issue. The V30 T-Mobile phone I purchased had a cracked back cover. So I replaced it with a new one following in detail the repair videos on google. After I put it together, the fingerprint option disappeared. Has anyone experienced this? Any resolution?
Thank you.
My LG V30+ fingerprint sensor quit working after I replaced the wide angle camera. It disappeared from the software menu and failed the hardware test. I replaced the fingerprint sensor with a new one without success. After examining the fingerprint sensor connectors on the motherboard with a 10x eye loupe (from Harb. Frieg.), I discovered that I had damaged one of the connectors when I removed the mid-board and main-board. The little gold connectors are spring loaded and circled with super thin aluminum looking strips. They are extremely fragile. One of the strips was bent down, and when I tried to bend it back, it broke off and fell on the table. It was so small I could barely feel it between my fingers. I suspect the fingerprint sensor is failing the hardware test because the connectors on the mainboard are damaged. I also suspect that the reason the software options are missing is that the system fails to detect a fingerprint sensor during the boot process and therefore does not load the fingerprint software options.

I'm curious to know if you were able to fix this issue after discovering the problem or if it is a lost cause. I'm having the same problem (no fingerprint option) after having someone else replace my screen and back glass. I'm not sure what else caused it or what to do about it.
I also got the same issue. My phone came back from the shop with heavily bent pins. Though I was able to bend most of them back (they're actually quite flexible, won't break easily as long as you're careful), one just won't return to its original state. It sits slightly lower than other pins and takes less force to compress.
Anyway it still works if I press on the connector. So if you're facing the same issue, try pressing the area to the lower right of the sensor whenever you need to use the sensor. If the phone detects sensor failure it won't work until next unlock.

my discovery about tempered glass screenshields and fp issue

... Is, that it is ok when they have the pattern of dots deployed squarely
Or even the ones with slight damage on fp reader
These dots and noises are recorded along with your fingerprint
BUT...
All the glasses actually MOVE a bit around so it generates another combination with fp scanner and the software is all the time doing its best to understand what's going on - if it has to learn more details about your fp or if it is seeing a false finger
Edit: I am still suspicious about upper suggestion because of the cryptic "learning" function of the fp sw.
Is that part closed source or could someone explain its working principles?

In theory: The sensor is able to register "new" areas of the fingerprint every time there's a positive authentication with a small unknown area.
In practice: The sensor registers these new areas, but it's temporary, you can check this in a simple way: Unlock the device many times and constantly, then wait a long time and try to unlock it with the same finger again, it's very likely that this unlock is slower than the previous ones.
(This only happens in 6T and 7, in the rest of devices with FOD OnePlus is using a "new generation" sensor which is much faster, accurate and reliable)
The models generated by the fingerprint sensor andthe "critical" code executed during the unlocking process are stored inside the TrustZone of the processor and nobody outside OnePlus or Qualcomm can access it (Using an analogy: it's an armored bunker that can only be opened from the inside), so it's almost impossible to see the code and know exactly how does it work.

Thanks for good information.
So the only way to reverse engineer it is by collecting different experiences with it.
Anyway, as I believe your suggestion about it being hardcoded, I am dumping the use of this hardware piece generally, device independently. For privacy reasons. So I have no issues anymore
Thanks
