Wifi calling? - LG G8X ThinQ Questions & Answers

Hi g8x have a wifi calling?

Yes, my US version does.

Just recently got the unlocked version with the dual screen bundle (LM-G850QM). I'm using it on Verizon and the Wi-Fi calling is working! Just FYI as Wi-Fi calling never works on Verizon with unlocked phone that didn't come from Verizon. I did already have a Verizon SIM.....

No such option on the Canadian model.
Not even VoLTE.
I'm on the Rogers network, btw.

Wi-Fi Calling (and other features such as VoLTE) are supported by the LG G8X so long as your carrier has enabled them.

I find it odd that you don't have the option fir VoLTE Or VoWi-Fi... Rogers (at least last time I checked) supported all the IMS features, being VoLTE, ViLTE, VoWi-Fi, and ViWi-Fi. Is your phone purchased from Rogers?

Mine has it on Bell.

True, Rogers support all the services, but they seem to operate on a white-listing model. If the device is not in their allow list, those features will not work.
Another example is the OnePlus phones, same thing.
But usually I see the option but it just wouldn't work. On my phone, it doesn't show at all. Unless LG software hides it automatically, I'd say its not there in the firmware.
This is an unlocked carrier-free Canadian model, not a Rogers phone. Rogers don't actually offer it at all.

Aaahhh.... That makes sense. I tried porting a HTC 10 from Bell to Rogers and had the same issue. They told me it was because the phone wasn't on their whitelist of allowed devices, even though I had the service working under Bell. I'd be willing to bet that the IMS Config file indicates that its to hide VoLTE and VoWi-Fi unless the network supports it. You can try using *#546368#*850# and see if it gives you options for VoLTE in the hidden menus. Likely under IMS Settings.
I can vouch for the G8X on Telus. It does support VoLTE and VoWi-Fi.

When the LG G8X was released Rogers did not carry it, I don't think the carry G8 either, that's how much the LG brand fell, it's only fanboys or people like who gave LG another chance to do better but as you can see they are not doing better, just going on the expectation if they build it suckers will buy it.

No ATT HD Voice on unlocked S9+

Hello,
I just bought the S9+ unlocked today at best buy. I love the phone and I opted in for unlocked version so that I can root the thing later if I wish.
So, I would really like to have the HD voice option, but I found out that you need a carrier phone to be able to have wifi-calling and hd voice. My parent can hear me great on their end (they have iphones) but on my end I have the same old ****ty voice quality.
Is flashing ATT firmware (and getting their bloatware) the only way to get the option? Right now, when I go into settings-> connections-> mobile networks, the option isnt even there.
Reason is the same as I posted on a different thread. Flashing at&t firmware will not fix the problem. Subsequent comments in the thread may be of interest.

Ouch. That sucks. I read somewhere that tmobile and sprint don't lock unlocked phones out of their volte and wifi calling. Does Verizon use same tactics as att or will they make it available to me as well?

Yeah att doesn't have volte on any unlocked Phones. I put a sim in my Sprint S8 and it dropped to H+ during the call where TMO and vzw stay on VOLTE on my phone.

Same issue in Canada - Carrier Unlocked device purchased do from Samsung & none of the Canadian Carriers support VoLTE or WiFi Calling - This is extremely unethical on the part of the partnership between Samsung & the Carriers! We all know that the Carriers are Samsung's biggest customers - But to make key features unavailable is unconscionable! ?

T-Mobile and Verizon customers both get VoLTE on Samsung factory unlocked phones. AT&T restricts by IMEI (as well as requiring their firmware). Sprint does not yet offer the feature at all on their network. It is unclear whether unlocked devices will get it once they do deploy it. Time will tell.

Unlocked AT&T LG V30 on T-Mobile

Hello all. I have an LG V30 unlocked from AT&T. I am currently in the market for some different phone service. I was looking to switch to T-Mobile. However, when I went to their BYOD Check Compatibility page and typed in my IMEI, it said my device was not compatible. Will I still be able to use T-Mobile, just miss out on a few features, or is it no use to try and get T-Mobile service? I have checked that my phone supports all of T-Mobile's bands save for band 71. I figured all I needed was a GSM device and a new SIM card. Am I unable to switch to T-Mobile, can I switch with limited features, or does it operate at full support on T-Mobile, just an error with the website? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your AT&T H931 phone is actually carrier unlocked, it will work with U.S. T-Mobile.

Thank you for your quick response. I will probably see if I can switch to T-Mobile now. I am still curious though. Why would T-mobile still register my device incompatible? Is it an error with my IMEI or the unlock? Is it something on T-Mobile's end?

AT&T H931 is normally carrier locked to AT&T. So, normally it won't work on any SIM card not affiliated with AT&T. T-Mobile knows that. However, you say it's now carrier unlocked. But there's no way for them to know that, just by the IMEI.

That makes more sense now. I can confirm that my phone is unlocked because I have actually used it with T-Mobile MVNOs in the past. I just didn't know if a full blown T-Mobile card would work in it, being scared of the website check and all. You've helped me to clear all this up and I can't thank you enough.

H932 lost VoLTE after updating to Pie

I have an unlocked H932 that I have been using in Mexico without any problem but after upgrading to Pie i can't find the option to enable VoLTE (my carrier supports the function VoLTE).
With Oreo there was no problem and VoLTE worked perfectly but now when making a call it changes from 4G to 3G, is it a known issue or is it just my phone?

I just asked my wife who recently updated her H932 to Pie, running it on Red Pocket GSMA (AT&T). She's not seeing the VoLTE option either.
My guess is T-Mobile took it out and only shows it when connected to the TMO network. Or they just enable VoLTE automatically on their network without displaying the option. Like most companies, carriers will do whatever it takes to avoid having to compete on price, so they're looking for any little at advantage they can come up with to differentiate and keep customers on their network.
FWIW, VoLTE never worked on Oreo either with my H932 on Red Pocket GSMA because AT&T reserves VoLTE for post paid customers. I can enable it on the phone, but it doesn't do anything. I am told it DOES work on Red Pocket GSMT (T-Mobile) which is a pretty good deal for such a low-priced service.
nevermind....

Try messing with the operator parameter in build.prop, OPEN/NAO should unlock it, assuming VoLTE is available on the free market US998 version

Unlocked AT&T Model on T-Mobile get VoLTE?

I tried the unlocked Sprint one and no VoLTE and no VoWifi. Does anyone have the unlocked ATT version LM-G850U on TMobile and if so, do VoLTE and VoWifi work?
Got one today.
No go. No VoLTE, no VoWifi.
I have a sprint version .someone find tricks to unlock
This VoLTE method probably does not work for Sprint version, but maybe someone can try it on AT&T version?

Those switches are greyed out on mine, which is (unintentionally) the Canadian version. But I have been told it is greyed out because VoLTE/Wifi Calling aren't enabled on the carrier side. In my case Ting says that my phone has LTE Band 12 and therefore VoLTE, but that will only work on ATT. A bit confusing because (like I said) the particular rom on my phone is Canadian (LMG850UM20e), so why ATT? The explanation for that, it seems is that ATT, (Sprint), and the unlocked Canadian version have the same sub-model (of the G8X - LMG850): LMG850UM. The USA unlocked version a different sub-model (LMG850QM), the rest of the world has yet another sub-model (LMQ850EMW). See this reddit post on the different models: https://www.reddit.com/r/LGG8X/comments/hvqdy4/hey_g8x_owner_what_is_the_submodel_number_and/
As far as I know all models (LMG850......) have the same hardware, the only difference are the roms, which artificially disable certain capabilities of the phone. I am pretty sure my phone would do VoLTE just fine on Ting (or most other carriers). The thing wrong here, I think, is that the IMEI and other specific identifiers of the phone artificially show that the phone does not have the functionality.
With all that said, I am still trying to find my around this problem. I'm considering flashing a different rom, tho not sure if that'll change what the IMEI and the other specific identifiers tell the cell carrier about compatibility. There is one report of T-Mobile supposedly fixing the same problem for a customer, see u/Veshtarii's comments on this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/LGG8X/comments/irm2as/lg_g8x_unlocked_models_having_issues_with_us/
I also plan to keep updating this XDA forum post https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g8X/help/unable-to-enable-volte-wifi-calling-t4185809 with what I find out about this problem, potential solutions, and hopefully what solves it. Hopefully my post will be useful to those with the same problem.
I have concluded it's not possible on any TMO towers. See my forum post for more details: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g8X/help/unable-to-enable-volte-wifi-calling-t4185809
Odd since t-mobile now owns Sprint. You would think t-mobile would allow or update the sprint version to use wifi/volte etc..
Perhaps future t-mobile firmware/security updates will patch the sprint to use these services.. Certainly NOT customer friendly for those who migrated from sprint to t-mobile.
I can understand the att version not working w t-mobile but not the sprint version

Maybe, I'm not sure still, even after all the research I've done. But I don't know everything of course. Also, after looking on ebay, the LMG850QM is like 450$ at the cheapest, compared to the 250$ of the LMG850UM ATT or Sprint versions, (the Canadian unlocked version is like 200$).

The WiFi Calling app only reveals the hidden menu, nothing more.
T-Mobile have VoLTE on by default. You can disable it by selecting different types of mobile networks such as Automatic 3G/2G, LTE/3G, or 2G only. I have no experience on this.
I have confirmed this by dialing *#*#4636#*#* Both data and voice are over LTE. And the VoLTE on/off button is grayed out (based on the type of mobile network selected).

most of the things should work
I did look on this specs first, after I got it seems like there is something additional. There is one spot I get a super connection but 90% of the time weak or no Service at all. I have tried many phones before but none of them even had such bad reception. And there supposed to be even the Tmobile 5G 71 Band. It looks to me someone sold a restricted fu.... Asia version without mentioning it
go to settings and all the way down you should see your model number. Considering that USA specific is not out yet you most likely have asian one which is XQ-CT72. EU one is CT54.
But those should work on t-mobile network, most of the bands are there. And those are low bands, so longer range.

It runs at limited feature support. Sony disables VoWIfi for US models and many other features including Bluetooth features such as Bluetooth meta data.
Sony blames T-Mobile for limited feature set. you will need to root your phone to hack up the build to enable VoWifi and other features.
This feud between Sony and T-Mobile has been going on for the past 10 years and Sony still playing ignorant to US market.
if you don't care about such limited feature set, Xperia 1 IV should still work on TMO
I just got my phone yesterday and realized the same thing happened to me, I didn't have service where I used to but I managed to get it working by: going to settings, then network and internet, then Sims, scroll down to access point names. And two options should pop up, I changed mine to T-mobile US LTE.. And restart, which worked for me.

Getting VoLTE and VoWiFi on unlisted carriers by flashing mbn file
I live in Canada and I have a BC72 (Asian version). I am struggling to get VoLTE and VoWiFi working. I know that mbn file is the key to getting IMS support and sony seems to block some carrier mbn files (only mbn in sales areas are available). So...

I have been using the XQ-CT72 here in michigan on GoogleFi, which is basically t-mobile, in my town where I live, I get 5G without doing anything to the phone, but with that said, I work 20 miles out in rural area and apparently from my research tmobile use band 71 for 5G in rural areas, I can get LTE+ but no 5g at work, my Pixel 6 pro can get 5g but its like 1 to 2 bars that`s it, but with my sony I get full bars of better signal on LTE+ with my Sony, since the Sony is missing the n71 band for 5G, but I`m fine with what I get, since at work I` m on wifi anyways, I`m happy with my purchase, I originally had the US model on pre-order and the release date was pushed back to Sept. 22-23, so I cancelled my pre-order and bought a new one on ebay for 1069.00 compared to sony wanted 1599.00 for US mode
EDIT: I ended up send it back to seller, the 5g icon was not really 5g, if you're in the USA I would wait and buy the USA version, which I pre-ordered from Sony website, expected ship date is 22-23
moving to GoogleFI is the best option to use this phone in the USA. it will utilize Tmobile USA and have all feature enables.

Only way to know for sure it to just buy it and try it for your usecases. Just buy it somewhere with a good return policy. I bought mine on Ebay with a 30-day return policy and so far it works fine on AT&T. Just make sure you do the trick where you disable dual-sim. (Google the details, it's somewhere here on XDA or on Reddit).
I bought my USA variant phone a week ago, and everything on T-Mobile works with the exception of Wi-Fi calling. The only alternative we have is to stop using T-Mobile and switch over to Google fi which does support Wi-Fi calling. Other than that my phone is flying super smooth and with fast performance like I've never believed compared to my old LG v30 Plus. I'm definitely impressed with this phone.

From a technical point of view, the phone should work on all carriers in the USA without issues, (with the exception of the Sony/T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling issue that forces those who want Wi-Fi calling to switch to Google Fi, Mint Mobile, and other MVNOs).
Whatever service is in the area should work. Verizon will provision your phone to work with it's network. CDMA based carriers are supported per Sony's phone settings, so I would just go for it.
