Hi
well I have no experience with Custom-ROMs, so can someonePlease explain to me
where exactlythe difference between Official ROMs and Unofficial ROMs is ?
What would you recommend in terms of stability
thanks
This is what I believe it means, using CyanogenMod as an example (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CyanogenMod).
AFAIK the CyanogenMod team develop their custom rom for a generic platform. They then select a number of devices and customize the generic version so it can be applied and used on these selected devices.
An official CyanogenMod ROM is when the CyanogenMod team have selected the device and done the extra work for the custom ROM to work on that device themselves.
Unofficial means that the extra work to tailor the custom CyanogenMod ROM for the device is done by other developers, who use the generic base which CyanogenMod provide.
To my understanding its more like sub-beta, directed mainly for flash freaks (count me in).
Regarding stability some official ROMs are far from stable, while some unofficial are ages in front.
Thanks guys for the great explanation....appreciate it...
well , During my search for a good ROM software I have often read that the 2 Roms was s always recommended
1. Temasek
2. LiquidSmooth
i mean are both roms really good and stable on s3?
or would you recommend something else
thanks
I would recommend CM12.1 as a daily driver. Is clean and fast. It works way better than stock Samsung ROMs and is very stable thanks to @JustArchi. It also drain less battery and has a good power save feature.

My current setup is this:
Recovery: TWRP
ROM: CM12.1
Kernel: Boeffla
And never been happier with my i9300
Hi
I have the latest version temasek's UNOFFICIAL CM12.1 v18.0 flashed + PA-GOOGLE APPS Plus GOOGLE STOCK PACKAGE
and I must say it really makes a great impression, everything seems stable so far.....
well the only thing that bothers me is the (ugly white background in Android Lollipop)but its just a matter of taste :silly:
Plus the newer builds of CM12.1 have OTA updater working.
How would you estimate the stability and performance of CM12.1 ROM's compared to official CM11 nightlies?
Flashed official CM11 once. Within 30 minutes of testing a had plenty of crashes and several Cannot connect to camera.
Lot of people here say that there is no need to move to Lolipop, because Kitkat is far more stable.. However I wouldn't agree.
I've tried searching and have had little luck in trying to get the details on this so hoping I can get a little more clarification here.
There's been a lot of good work being done by MasterAwesome in:
[ROM][5.1.1][STABLE] CyanogenMod 12.1 for OnePlus X
and while I understand some of the ROMs in Android Development such as Resurrection Remix and Euphoria are using the CyanogenMod 12.1 base and adding some customizations...
What is the benefit of using these as opposed to just using the source. I've tried to search for a quick guide to see what the added features or customizations are but unable to get clear answers to what each add that isn't on the other.
If this stable CyanogenMod gets to be an official build, will these ROMs be automatically updated as Cyanogen is or will you need to wait for each ROM developer to update them with nightlies, security patches, etc.
try resurrection remix

....its the best rom
dont worry
What is the difference between Lineage's Experimental ROM & Nightlies ROM ???
Coming from other ROM if u don't want to loose your data, even unofficial Laos u need to flash the experimental one & then nightly, if u starting fresh just download the nightly & flash
The first experimental build is a data migration build which is only for users who previously installed official CM 14.1 and want to preserve their data. You should flash the first nightly build if you are installing official LineageOS for the first time. You should also flash nightly as soon as possible once the experiment build finishes booting on your phone.
How is the camera quality in official LineageOS?
I read somewhere, that they don't have BLOBS nor sources, so the camera is much worse than in stock ROM.

Anything different. Just unofficial build.
Is VoLTE working?
wrong branch for the thread !
Flashed the ROM over official RR 5.8.0
Seems to be stable so far. People using Jio/VoLTE should be happy with this as it's working fine for me as yet. Also, the bugs remain the same as the official build like Skype just doesn't work, it force closes automatically.
Kindly fix it

Yes it is.
Can you please tell:
What about selinux status
Any optimisations different from other RR ROMs availble
I have been experiencing some problems lately compiling kernels, and just wanted to take a step back to try to understand the bigger picture of Android custom ROMS.
Let's take this Havoc OS for the Realme 2 Pro as an example:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/realme-2-pro/development/rom-havoc-os-t3925153
Under sources there are 2 links:
https://github.com/Havoc-OS
https://github.com/Havoc-Devices
1) Can anyone explain the difference between the 2 sets of sources (OS vs. Devices) and which ones would be used for the above custom ROM?
2) Can we assume that the official kernel has been used (see link below) or a modified/generic one instead? Is this kernel included anywhere in the Havoc source code links?
https://github.com/realme-kernel-opensource/Realme2Pro-kernel-source
3) What is vendor.img? Is it simply another name for the compiled kernel?
4) How does the kernel know which OS/filesystem it's booting and how easy is it to interchange another OS with the same kernel?
5) Can just the kernel be updated and flashed without updating the main OS of the custom ROM? If so, which partition is the kernel flashed to?
6) Could an entire custom ROM be booted from the recovery partition instead of the boot/system partition?
7) Any useful links/books/resources for Android ROM development from scratch?
