worth buying if i want aosp - Realme XT Questions & Answers

I'm someone who always buys the phone to flash an aosp rom like PE or LOS. what is the development potential in this phone? is it worth buying if I dont want features but jsut a clean aosp experience without bugs?

no absolutely not

Bad but there's better devices around. Especially the redmi k20
The flash tool for realme is still unreleased and you have to take your phone to service centre in case something goes wrong
Lengthy process to unlock bootloader
Kernel sources out of date
Encrypted ROMS that makes devs difficult to obtain files.
Overall, this is a namesake developer friendly device.

Why there is no custom rom?

First of all, before you can get mad at me because you think im requesting for a custom rom but im not. It's just i thought in the first place that Sony was more supportive of unlocking bootloader, rooting, things like that than Samsung because they(sammy) developed KNOX a long time ago to harden phone security and against to rooting.
Now i feel like it's sammy was the supportive one because comparing the custom rom development, i feel that in sony it is lesser.
So someone could explain what is the wall in custom rom development, is it the lack of sources of binary blobs or device drivers to get it working (yah because, mostly in our tab forum, the rom is sometimes not stable because of lack of binary blobs mking the rom not working camera, no sim card or even cannot detect radios). Or maybe that is the bootloader that sony programmed to doom every uncertified pieces of software installed on a device.
Just asking ✌

Custom ROM development...

Realme 1 will be popular among developers for sure.XDA acknowledged it by opening a page for our device even before its sale has started. So all that is good.
Now coming to the problems,
We all know that mediatek is infamous for not releasing kernel sources. That makes it difficult for the developers to build custom ROMs.
On a more positive note since the realme one is based on 8.1 Oreo,I am guessing that its project treble compatible(somebody please confirm this) which makes the custom ROM development easier.
So the final question,
Will we get fully working custom ROMs of future android versions even if oppo and mediatek does not release kernel sources? Will project treble help in doing that??
You most probably will not. Snapdragon phones have better development, for example, the Redmi 4A did not have kernel source till recently, yet we had bugless Nougat ROMs, and now with source we have Oreo. It all depends on developer support, Oppo is not a brand that interests developers, on top of that it is a Mediatek phone, your custom ROM dreams may well be shattered. A few ported ROMs may be made if any developer decides to make it but will most likely be too buggy.

True. But oppo has never released a phone like this.
This phone has the same chipset(helio p60) of oppo f7 which is two times more costly than the realme 1.Therefore it offers immense value for money. And this will attract a lot of customers.Normally when a device has a huge customer base and if it is a value for money device, developers usually become interested in those devices.
Also I know know that both mediatek and oppo have violated GPL many times by not releasing the sources. But since this device is treble compatible,it should solve that problem to a certain extent right?
I am open to discussion...

Yes it will help, as project treble is a initiative by Google to help developers create custom roms without approaching Vendor(Oppo) or the Manufacturer(Mediatek).

I don't need root access, but there are issues with Color OS 5.
Like:
1. New notification pop appear for 3-4 seconds and you cannot swipe and close them, you need to wait to automatically close them, hampering your work. In other OS you can simply swipe left/right/both to close popup.
2. If you enable development option, then yellow notification will show constantly to close it, until you close mode. Why can't I use function like mock location, etc.
3. If you use app which use accessibility services (like Greenify) then it will constantly show notifcation bar sign to close, it means you cannot use Developer Mode or Accessibility Services Apps.
Hope Oppo will fixes these issues with Color OS in future updates.

It confirmed via email. The reply is given below:
"Thank you for writing to RealMe Customer Service regarding Project Treble inquiry.
We are delighted to inform you that your RealMe 1 device supports Project Treble. It is already enabled in your device."
But after some researchs i realised that even if it could support project treble, we still can't flash GSI rom with a locked bootloader. (Correct me if it is a wrong findings)

You need to wait for kernel sources to get released so devs can work on custom roms. If we get a TWRP recovery, you can try out the A/B GSI roms which are good but slightly buggy. If you want a bugfree rom, you need to wait a while, maybe a month or so.
Thanks bro when can we expect releases of kernel source another quarter

I'm very sad to see R5+ development is currently dead. I was hoping someone would build a Pixel Experience or any AOSP based ROM for our device but even the oreo roms are dead or finalized already. So i don't think people have anymore interest in R5+..

The real problem is lack of updated Oreo kernel sources (how much less Pie). This means, for example, that certain display panels (eg, ebbg) cannot be supported by custom ROMs (you might have to go back to Nougat kernels for that).
Why not write to Xiaomi to release up-to-date Oreo kernel sources for vince in the first instance? If enough people make a fuss, perhaps something will happen ...

Xiaomi however isn't listening their customers. A big example is ARB system which absolutely destroys devices. So i guess we are gonna stay dead until something shows up..

What to do after getting this phone?

So after a lot of speculation I'm finally going to buy this device!
I want to install PE Q version on this phone.
Q1) should I directly unlock bootloader and flash Q?
Q2) do I need to do OTAs till the latest version?
Q3) any bugs on custom roms like PE Q?
Q4) average SOT on Q?
Q5) GCam works on custom Roms?
Q6) any better custom Q rom?
Q7) how do we unlock the bootloader?
That's all folks!
Hope you answer this..

You have to unlock bootloader first..it will take 72 hours..enough time to catch up on all ota updates..
PE is in early stages so yes expect a few bugs but still its a daily driver so go for it..
Yes gcaM works but video recording is nt working in PE Q as of now..
No PE is best right now..
Tutorial of bootloader unlocking is present in detail at xda

these question are your fears you are thinking loud!
every rom (stock or custom) has bugs! and you know that!
the only thing which i will answer here (which you didn't ask btw) is follow the flashing process properly to avoid bricking your phone!
after every vendor image, do flash DFE in order to avoid encryption error otherwise you will have to format everything. Make sure not to change the filesystem from ext4 UNLESS your kernel and rom support or you will be locked out (format data)
for unlocking , follow xiaomi website and request unlock powers to your Xiaomi account. you should be running Developer rom (at least this is how I unlocked it)
First I want you to know the cons of unlocking your bootloader:
Data can be accessed by people if your phone is stolen (don't flash disabled encryption to encrypt your data)
In some cases manufacturers void the warranty of phones
Unofficial roms can have spyware in them do only go for official builds of lineage, pixel experience or any trusted rom....
Note: Start reading up on XDA regularly to check out new ROMs and kernels. It helps one decide on whether they want to take this step forward...
But those who do don't regret it cause this leads to opening up a whole new world....and in some cases people become android developers due to their love for the amount of resources on XDA and the supportive community that is there on XDA

ONCE
- Boot is unlocked and
- you are running Rooted ROM
TECHNICALLY its HACKERS HEAVEN!
anyone who gets hold of your device can not only steal the hardware but your personal data too
in ROOTED fone hackers may find vulnerabilities in SeLINEX (specially on permissive mode) and can take hold of your device!
yes if you keep your internal storage Encrypted! chances are who ever takes hold of your device cannot access your data! however Vendor/Firmare 10.3.8 is not supported YET by many roms and if you flash this vendor and flash custom rom! it won't able to access the internal storage (Like LineAge) and it will keep rebooting!
also if you flash older stable vendor firmare 9.6.27-9.0, and don't flash DFE, & later come back and try different custom rom! you will LOCK yourself out from internal storage and ALL the date will be WIPED! basically vendor treats YOU also as intruder if you change roms!
- I swapped between Havoc and Crdroid with vendors and EVOLUTIONX and had to either FORMAT data for vendor to encrypt Internal storage with new Hash or my device kept bootlooping
summing up,
- even if you DON"T flash DFE and have ROOTED custom rom, hackers CAN still find loopholes in Anrdoid and have access!
- LineAge, Crdroid, Mokee has some sort of security Options ON/OFF which can be found in settings! you may try that! but then if fone is rooted! you are vulnerable

boot.img for a BE2028

"Just flash a GSI and be done with it bro" comments will be ignored.
The BE2028 is the T-mobile variant of the Nord N10 5G and before I do any thing on this phone, I want to be sure of a few things.
I want to be able to get back to EDL mode should something go wrong and I want to be able to use a good boot.img and if there are any decent boot.img file(s) for this phone.
I realize that this isn't a very popular phone and I plan on compiling a few custom roms for this phone which i'm in the process now. But is anyone else working on the BE2028 variant of this phone? When I fan thru this forum, mostly what I see is the other variants and not much is spent on the BE2028 so that's where I'd like to help and if anyone else would like to help would be great and if you want we can stay in contact on Discord or telegram or whatever.
If anyone has any experience with this phone, please let me know.
Also, is there a good way to make clean backups of the partition tables, partitions and data as well as ny hard linked code if something goes squirrely like IMEI lost or whatever. I believe once I get a good custom rom built for this phone it can be a very nice budget phone.
I'd also like to remove the tmobile branding from the rom as well which is why I want to get a good feel for this. I've built custom roms for my Xiaomi and Samsung Note 2 but I feel this is going to require a bunch more work than just building a ROM out.

I've written to OnePlus support in regards to debranding this phone and if there is an official way of putting a global OS on here instead of a TMobile only, since I own the phone, I want to use my phone.
