Hi, this question may sound weird. I believe I made a general post about but got lost.
I have the XT1650-03 and also XT1543 (may sound off topic but is not).
Both of them are running custom roms, the Z running Android 9, and the G3 2015 running Android 7.
My question is, how do you know which is the "optimal" version for a phone? I'm not talking about features, or security updates. Is like having a PC running Windows 7, and then upgrading (doing a clean install of course) to Windows 10 and you see that the computer works but has a hard time with it. The same could be said with Linux versions; maybe.
I'm debating myself between staying where I'm or going back to stock on both phones, then rooting them, as not much modification was done and both of them are my daily drivers; so I care more for stability and optimal resource use during the day than anything else.
I remember once @ lost101 made some optimized roms for the Moto G, basically stock roms but without bloatware and some optimizations, but haven't seen anyhing for the G3 or even the Z. I remember my Moto G lasted quite a long time before I gave it to my mom a few years ago, today she has a Moto E, but still has my old Moto G working, she has it as a backup phone; still with the improved Moto G stock rom.
Edit: I also wanted to thank @squid2, @sd_shadow, their files have also kept in shape my trusty Moto G3
Sorry, I'm getting old for this.

This may not help you as much as you would like The most optimized ROM is the one that works the best for you.
Most ROMs that are going beyond what the OEM provided are building that against the base firmware of the device. So a device that doesn't have A/B slots, won't get seamless updates, or treble support (ok, there are rare cases for Treble). The point is, custom ROMs are providing kernel and security updates. For some people, all of the bells and whistles in a custom ROM is not optimized for their use. For others, stock is never enough. I personally retire a device that no longer gets security updates, either from the OEM or at least from the custom development community.
Often a device performs badly due to an aging battery. Also, any ROM, over time can get bogged down and benefit from a factory reset fresh start.
You need to decide what serves you and your device best
@ktmom It does help, thank you.
The thing is that, I was debating myself thinking that the whole android world depended heavily on the phone's tech specs. I mean, I have read about a Moto G with Android 9 but... for a daily driver, that doesn't need all the bells and whistles... is it worth it? is it too much? That's what I was thinking.
Thank you for taking your time and answering me, I really appreciate it.
I think sometimes the new and improved specs are being chased because it's shiny. I tend to buy last season's model Google phone from swappa. I think the Nexus 6 is roughly equivalent to the Moto G. The N6 has several A9 ROMs still developed and at least one A10 ROM. I still have two N6 devices but they run as control devices in the house. Either could be pressed back into service as a daily driver if needed.

Hello!
I was thinking about buying the LG G R Smartwatch, but it needs android 4.3 and the HTC one x+ (no carrier) I have is 4.2 - What would be a recommended way of upgrading? I'm happy enough with the 4.2, the only specific reason to upgrade would be to get the smartwatch thing going. So a 4.3 (or later) that is closer (and stable) to the default that comes with the HTC One X+ would be best.
Thank you very much.
Hi,
Have you ever flashed a rom before?
Did you look around the android development section for a rom?
I do recommend going with something like Cyanogenmod 11 but its a lot different from stock.
I have the LG G watch r and its great definitely worth it if you want to spend a bit more money compared to the others.
Hi, thanks for the reply.
I have installed custom roms in my HTC desires, rooted my nexus tablet, etc... While I have next to no knowledge of these things, usually the procedures are very well explained in xda and if I follow the instructions carefully and everything ends up working, even when I don't necessarily understand what I'm doing.
I'm quite happy with my HTC One X+, there's no real feature I'd be missing (usually I play a little bit more with phones that are near the end of their life cycle) so the only reason to do this would be to be compatible with the LG Smartwatch.
I too have the same problem. I'll be receiving my Moto 360 pretty soon, and I need to find a stable 4.3/4.4 ROM for the One X+. Until now, I must say that nothing runs as smooth as a Sense ROM... Not to mention the battery life. I'm now running the latest version of CarbonROM, and while it's fast most of the time, is does lag from time to time.
I'll try CM11 and OmniROM, but I'm afraid I'll end up disappointed and in need of purchasing another phone, just to be able to use a smartwatch. It's such a pity HTC didn't at least give us 4.3 with Sense 5...
Maybe it will be realistic to wait for the android L to come to the x+ ?
Given that 4.3/4.4 ROM run as they do, I highly doubt any 5.0 ROM would run better in any way. Call me pessimistic, but the device was left running on 4.2.2, which is 3 generations behind Lollipop. So I won't hold my breath for great performance on 5.0.
But I really hope I am (proven?) wrong.
Well to be honest I don't really want a lot of change, just the things that make it possible to use a smartwatch - maybe Lollipop will attract more people and good things will come? I really only needed those notifications things and bluetooth low power to communicate better with the watch, I'm very happy with the one x+ otherwise, and can't find a reason to upgrade to another phone...
If I had an android wear device, it would make my life easier...Anyone know where I can get a cheap one? We will get L, just not sure in what shape yet....
Wel Lloir, I think LG G Watch and the Samsung Gear Live are kind of cheaper now. I paid 249.99$ + taxes for the Moto 360 (aprox. 273$), I am now waiting for it to come from the US (a friend is visiting, and she bought it). The G Watch should be around 150$.
I reiterate my statement above, I am pretty sure we will get L (either from you, or other developer), but it still won't run like Sense 5 on 4.2.2. I so hate HTC for not giving us a 4.3 ROM, just for Wear support.

What other developer? Pippo won't do it because he doesn't have the device (And blind deving with a new source is painful) it's just me.....
Though I can't see me getting an Android wearable at that price :/ I'll see what I can do for you though.
I guess I'll go the cyanogenmod 10.2 route for now, seems stable enough and with 4.3. It would be a lot nice if HTC would do a 4.3 upgrade for the one x+ but I really don't see that coming
Didn't CM 10.2 have some sort of a Bluetooth issue on the One X+?

You can try PureAosp 4.3 if you want super stability.
Isn't it the pureaosp 4.3 that has bluetooth issues?

what bluetooth issue I updated it last week when I remembered about said issue
Alrighty then, pure aosp4.3 it is. I'll have to try it tomorrow because the instructions don't seem so easy for my sleep deprived brain right now The audio is the only thing that no custom rom has managed at 100% right? Anyway many thanks for the good work!
Tried CM 10.2 yesterday after I posted the above message, and I must say I am impressed with the speed and stability.
No offence Lloir about your work on 4.4.4, but 4.3.1 is so much better and stable on the HOX+. I'll try Pure ASOP 4.3 in the following days.
For a moment there, I was already thinking of buying a used One M7, but after seeing the stability of 4.3 I will definitely hold off.
It seems that 9 times out of 10 I read about a problem with an android, it's about an OS update breaking things:
"Can't root the latest stock ROM update nohow"
"Latest mfc ROM / CM / etc. incorporated XXX change and now I can't get Viper4Android / AutomateIt / whatever working"
"Latest 5.x ROM now requires root for the same app / action that didn't require root before"
"SELinux / Knox / etc. can't be disabled nohow on the latest ROM"
Personally I got everything working just the way I want on the rooted form of the stock 4.4.2 ROM that came with my LG G Pro 2
--and I'd strangle anyone who hits the update button on it (except I think rooting disabled the OTA update thing)
----and I have half a mind to buy another identical phone for backup, because this phone still seems to be able to go toe to toe with the latest flagships (1080p screen is plenty dense enough for my eyes, 3GB/32GB still seems to be the maximum amount of memory any phone packs, I could care less about new CPUs that eat batteries at the same rate that they increase performance) and more importantly, I'm very pessimistic about the prospects of being able to get Viper4Android, Xposed framework, VolumeSteps+, PBMC Mappings and AutomateIt all working on whatever ROM that comes with whatever next phone I would have to buy when this one breaks.
I read the adventures of those who upgrade their ROM nightly and run into a different compatibility problem every night the way I listen to the ravings of a lunatic walking out of a spectacular train wreck
And I have a friend whom I bought a Sony Z3 for who had gone through trying a dozen different ROMs in a few weeks. It's a brick now
You can argue that the older versions of Android would have more stability and mods, but most end users are not as tech savvy and are less demanding as yourself. All they need is a phone that functions properly for them. Usually developers release updates to fix stuff with the current firmware, so most end users would be tempted to do the update when it comes out. They would be less concerned with things like V4A and custom mods which require more knowledge. As for LG G Pro 2, I wouldn't say it's able to go head to head with other flagship phones, unless you used a custom ROM with it. Specifications wise, it will still lose out to most phones, because no matter how much you attempt to tweak the software, it is still limited by the hardware. Furthermore, when you compare the developer database to Samsung and Sony, LG has a much smaller database as compared to both manufacturers. You can find plenty of custom ROMs for Samsung and Sony phones, but not so for LG phones. Just my two cents.
Greetings! My current phone plan is ending (finally!) and I'm looking to get a new phone. I am not an Android developer (though I am keen on getting into that at some point) but I most certainly will root it and install a custom ROM, etc, as I have always done. I need advice on which phone is best for that: has the most extensible developer support and biggest number of custom ROMs (that are not just debloated version of stock). Also, what's the status on Android Pay+root, does it work on any phone? Finally, I need it to have a powerful hardware. I read my options come down pretty much to Nexus 6P, Pixel, HTC 10 and OnePlus 3T (I think all of them, but Pixel, come with Marshmallow but have Nougat updates released.) Their prices are vastly different and most are not available as a phone plan in my country (Australia). I may end up having to buy them as a pre-paid phone from eBay or wherever. What are your thoughts on them when it comes to rooting/modding, hardware prowess and price?
P.S. I use Linux on my PC and laptops, so it would be great if the bootloader unlocking, rooting and flashing of recovery can be done via fastboot and adb. I've only owned Samsung Galaxies so far and had to go through the trouble of installing Windows just to use Odin.
Hi,
For your smartphones choice, I vote for Oneplus.
I have OP3 and tried OOS (stock), ResurrectionRemix and PhoenixExtended ROMS.
OP3 is really well supported by devs and hardware quality is really good for the privé.
ANY DEV'S HERE ?? PLEASE !!
LG ALREADY SHARED THE OPENSOURCE NOUGAT http://opensource.lge.com/osSch/list?types=NAME&search=h901
and i dont know what is going on to happen after i found this https://www.lineageoslog.com/14.1/h901
LOT OF V10 USERS ARE FEELING LONELY SOME ONE PLEASE COME FORWARD
IS A REQUEST BEHALF OF ALL LG V10 USERS
Hopefully LG did a better job with their code in N....cause from what a feew devs had said about the V10 and a few other LG models....terrible quality code....mot sure if just sloppy, inefficient or what..just crappy.

I second that request. The LG V10 is a brilliant, flagship device...marred only by lousy battery life (ez to swap the battery out, though). I was expecting that since LG is porting Nougat to the V10, there would be dev work going on. There was a rooted version of the stock H90120e upgrade (which I have on my h901); but, it seems all development stopped after that. The fact that there were enough V10 owners to force LG into doing the Nougat upgrade should prove that there is a sizable market for a new, unlocked Nougat ROM. If anyone does it, I will be glad to act as a tester.

Battery life..yea...in my experience, it fluctuated allot. For a while, my V10 was getting very good battery life, but the last couple months, battery life is terrible, especially just standby time. Its drops to the mid 60's after just 4 hrs of sitting with screen off and nothing happening. I haven't change anything on it.
I recently switched to my Moto X Pure that is stock 6.0 but rooted and lightly modded with exposed....battery life is freaking amazing. Downgrade in camera(but stereo front facing speakers sound amazing), but I think my taste in Android had changed. Moto is closest to pure Google Android as u can get without getting a Nexus or Pixel, only a little bit of Moto apps and services added on...no UI or heavy customization. The experience is much smoother.
I recently had the chance to actually use a Pixel XL for a few days...and WOW...never used Android device that was so buttery smooth and fast. Makes sense cause with the Pixel, Google controls both hardware and software (like Apple and iphone). Only things that is holding me back is that the Pixel doesn't support AptX, which is important to me (but i read that Android O will soon fix that), and also the hefty price...have to get 128gb version since 32 is too small for me and no micro sd slot. Would cost $1,048 for the Pixel 128Gb with Google 2yr ADH warranty. Also, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL (6in lcd) may come out end of this year (November?) so looking forward to seeing how they improved upon the already nice product...at the very lest, price on 1st gen Pixel should come down at that point. Rather wait and dump the money on newer model in a few months...
As far as my V10....plan to wipe and re-flash rom...see if that helps restore the things battery life....but rather do that with an updated custom stock rom...but nothing newer than what i already have....so it its waiting for the 7.0 update.

Hi
I have a V10 H901 running Eliminator74's custom debloated V20L Rom and have no problems with battery in standby (overnight it only looses 2 to 3%)
and under normal use during the day I admit battery life is not outstanding but I do manage to get through the day.

yea....like i said....mine used to be like that...but recently...the phone hates me. Moto X pure is more than 2x the battery life. Been off charger since yesterday evening...still says 1 day 1hr left. Same normal apps installed and active.
YEAH! We want custom roms, Mods, tweaks, etc! This phone is extremely great!
I cannot promise anything due to work taking up time, life, etc...
But I really want to get xposed working on Nougat, and it doesn't seem terribly difficult with what I saw put up on github recently. That's going to be my first pet project. I haven't messed with this stuff in a few years though, so will have to shake off some rust. If I get it done... it will go up here! lol It's way more for me (I love xposed) then anyone else, but if I get it working why not share with the class!

I got the same problem, Battery life used to be good and all of a sudden it dropped drastically, Hate to see no updates from LG Tmobile, I think the problem is with the android system itself sucking the battery. New battery didn't help. I tried go launcher and it seems to be better ,, so I doubt the launcher is eating up every bit of battery. you could try different launchers and check if that is the issue. ( screen consuming all the battery )
But cant wait to update to nougat. so finally here at xda forums. Awesome folks here!!!
Any idea on how to root h901 running Nougat 7
yes to this thread, please build a stable lineage version for the h901 v10.
Hi all
I used AOKP on Samsung and LG some years ago, and it was incredible. I've tried many other ROMs (like 2 a month for a year), it was not the same. crDroid came close, but is still lacking. I want to buy a new phone that is known to have very stable AOKP support. I'm talking about someone who's used the device for 6-12 months at least with no known issues (or minor issues that legit don't bother them), and uses almost every aspect of the ROM's features (I've seen phones that don't support the ribbon, for example, which is a deal breaker).
My budget is anywhere from $300-$1000, I don't really care, so long as the device has at least 2GB RAM and an OK processor.
I don't care too much about the GPU because modern games block rooted devices anyway.
Phone size etc doesn't matter, though I'd prefer bigger rather than smaller.
At least 1920x1080 res, but larger is fine.
I'd prefer very good battery life. I don't want a second hand phone as people tend to ruin batteries, and replacements tend to have terrible shelf lives.
Getdroidtips dot com has some phones listed (I can't post the exact link to the list because too low rep ). The Google Pixel XL looks like a very good choice, but it seems you can't buy them new anymore.
Any suggestions from existing AOKP users? All advice will be much appreciated.
@aggregate1166877
I'm not an AOKP user.
The latest AOKP Custom ROM is based on Android 8.1. A Custom ROM such as TWRP is required to flash it, what presupposes that device's bootloader can get unlocked.
So your options are restricted to Android devices a TWRP exists for and its bootloader can get unlocked.
