Extract full backup - no screen - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Just getting back into Android dev stuff from many years away. I have two low-end Android 4.1.1 tablets, one has a busted screen that doesn't show anything (but does boot and I can grab full access through ADB), the other is one I bought that is identical in model number (M712MC) to transfer the image to. I need to make a full backup of the first via Windows/Linux access only (again, no screen...busted). It is already rooted but does not have a custom recovery on it yet. The lack of visuals on the screen makes implementing that difficult.
Any tips on how to grab the full image from the first device? I can then put on a custom recovery to the second and restore that way.
Thanks in advance.

Both (and Mac OS). I have a Windows 10 desktop host with Ubuntu Bash installed, a few Linux VM's (Ubuntu, Kali, and other Debian based distros), and a Macbook Pro.

Ok good. What root app are you currently using? Most modern phones use magisk but I'm guessing yours may be using supersu or an equivalent.

adbd is what's providing me root via adb as far as I can tell (it's the only thing I can find via the config and init files, it's specifically commented about there). /data/app is empty, as is app-private. Any other method to identify what specific root app, other than adbd, is there?
EDIT: I ran a 'pm list packages' and don't see anything about a dedicated root app. It's probably in the ROM itself. The device is a vendor supplied one which I own and verified is within my rights to transfer the image to an identical device.

There were a couple of inconsistencies with the partitions/environment from the instructions, but I found workarounds and got the necessary partiton image files off. Now I'm searching for a custom recovery compatible with this tablet, which I'm not finding. I think I remember the stock recovery not allowing this level of control, but maybe I'm wrong.
Any tips for now pushing these partitions to overwrite the identically named ones on the other device? Essentially both have the same OS/image, just mine has the system level configurations custom to my usage.

I only have the model number of your device but not what brand name it is. Cwm and philz recovery pre dated todays twrp so a version of one or the other would be what you need. As far as flashing the images to the identical device, fastboot may be an option to flash them without recovery, if you have access to it.

I just searched for a custom recovery for your device, yifang M712MC and came up empty handed. If you have the recovery.img i can take a look and see if i could port cwm, twrp or philz for you. I develop full time for several other devices so it may take me a few days but I'd be willing to try if it helps you.

model?
I have m712mc firmwares. an original m712mc from hcl u2 & m727mc from nextbooks which also work on m712mc (without any noticeable issue. perhaps a little slow)
there a few other firmwares with m712mc floating around but i think anything with a 1GHz cortex A9, 8726M3 1GB DDR1 will likely work.
built by YIFANG regardless of brand is very likely to work.
which m712mc tablet do you have? can you post the full build.prop here?
I need a nextbook m712mc or a compatible m727mc 4.1.1 with 8192cu wifi card or a SMT modified rom with 8192cu.

"My phone number" in About Phone==>Status

Hi, I've read a lot of threads about this and have found no feasible answer to this (at least for me). My Atrix 4G running android 2.3.4 on Blue Chronic firmware "HomeBase Mega4 - Gingerbread 2.3.4" shows a blank field in the "My phone number" section. I know that using a Sony Ericsson or an old Samsung phone will allow me to edit this on my sim card, however I do not have access to either of these types of phones. Has anybody found a way to edit this on the Atrix itself, either by using SQLite editor or even using Root Explorer's text editor? I can do it easily if I can just find the fields that need to be edited. Please help.
Any possible solutions will be much appreciated.
Also does anybody know where I can find the .apk files after an apps been installed, do they get saved to a folder on the phone like a computer's "Temporary Internet Files" folder when you just click "run" in the dialog box?

Now I still need the My phone number info, hopefully someone has that info....
You can edit the phone number using CM7
hmm, I have blue chronic right now, maybe I'll try to install CM7 again, last time I tried my phone soft bricked itself.. well, I soft bricked it...
Edit: Thanks for the tip though, I'll try it again...
Update: For some reason I am unable to install CM7. No clue why, I'll do a little research and try again. In the mean time if anyone has any other possible solutions, they would be much appreciated.
Still having trouble with this, if anyone has any roms other than CM7 that they would recommend that would be nice.

Just download the Rom Manager app from the market, it should let you know if your recovery is up to date and offer to update it for you if it isn't

You have to use the cd (change directory command) in your command prompt to get to where you fastboot program is so for example if its file path is c:/androidtools/fastboot.exe
you would have to open cmd and type
Code:
cd c:\androidtools\
and then you could run any fastboot commands from there
if you don't already have fastboot it's here

It's the same for me
I had that problem when I switched my carrier. I have not came across a ROM for it that allows SIM number change. If you dont have an issue installing this, use that to change your number, otherwise you might need to borrow someone's blackberry phone to do it, most of the BB's are known to be able to edit SIM numbers apparently.
I ended up digging out my old Acer Liquid E running CM7 based ROM which had the SIM number option and worked like a charm on my current SIM (it is the proper number now). But this option is no where to be found on the Atrix's CM7 ROMs

Install Fedora on the ATP

Get the rootfs image:
Fedora 15: http://fedora.roving-it.com/rootfs-f15-hfp-alpha1.tar.bz2
Fedora 17: http://fedora.roving-it.com/rootfs-f17-hfp-alpha1.tar.bz2
unpack it to /data/local/fedora
unzip and copy the attached script to /data/local/bin/fedora and run it
If you create /mnt/sdcard inside the fedora root, your sdcard will be bind mounted there.

This should help.
It's a Linux distribution.. like Ubuntu..
Does this mean we can then VNC into it after turning the server on?
How much has been tested on it?
Sounds cool. Read up ln it a little as I wondered at first what it was also. THEY say it's good but the main drawback is the short lifespan and support of each version. AS they pump out new versions like every 6 months or so n support for it is one of the shortest. SO it makes it hard for developers to use since its not long term.
Plus I never knew there was like a million flavors of Linux..lol. not even funny how many different flavors there was while reading up on Fedora.
Wait, can we actually use fedora on the prime this way through a script? How is functionality? We can simply shut it down again or something...?
More details would be nice Might give it a try later if I know/understand more about it hehe.

I am actually unable to get this to work at all. Nevermind loading the files on the prime was nothing but an issue. IS there a proper method for loading fedora. im getting:

Im trying to install fedoa on a rooted tf201. Downloaded tar.gz2, attempted to extract to 'data/local/fedora' but i could not extract it. Anyone have any luck with fedora on the prime?
Fedora 17 alpha image: http://fedora.roving-it.com/rootfs-f17-hfp-alpha1.tar.bz2
This is interesting, I nee to RMA mine for a few issues and hold off on unlock/root until I get a satisfactory prime but I'm excited.
One this though I too heard about the short lifespans, is this a bad thing? I only ask because projectors in theaters run fedora so I would assume they must be ultra stable with the shortened lifespan of each release, unless they update after every release. Just interesting to me.
I have a functinal rooted tf201 with root, busybox, xorg (as far as I know) through Linux Installer, VNC Viewer, Terminal Emulator and OTA Rootkeeper. I have a fair amount of root & bash experience, so I'd be delighted to help the OP with writing a walkthrough of the VNC server-client process in the specific case of Yum based distros and Fedora's rootfs structure.

I view it as a bonus. You will find that at any time there are at least 2 versions being supported and although I use Ubuntu/Debian I would think that that Fedora enables users to upgrade from the previous to current version with a mouse click or two and 200Mb of downloads - just as easy as Windows but with more control (and bugs get fixed in hours!).

{Script} Moto Milestone X2 2.3.6 Root

I have noticed that many people have had issues rooting their phone, especially recently. And i have also gotten tired of typing or copying the root method over and over after flashng in RSD and loosing root.
In response to that i have taken it upon myself to write a script for automating a majority of the process for all of us, making the process swifter than before. However this is not a one click root there are many steps nessecary to root our device. All i have done is wiritten a script to automate a majority of the process.
I will only test one version of the script, the ubuntu 12.10 version, because thats the only operating system i run and its easiest to test this one. i will leave the other versions to other people and to post issues with them as they arise so i may fix them
there are several versions of the script
*Ubuntu - 12.10 and up
*Ubuntu generic - 10.04-12.04
*Linux generic - any version of linux
*Windows bat file - Must download Motorola drivers
*Android - NEW ALPHA!! can actually be run from another rooted phone or tablet!! Scripts for general use coming soon! Testers are welcome! Check out the second post for details.
each version has the nessecary files to root your phone and including the script
These are not flash able scripts these must be uncompressed and run on a computer
Oh and feed back is more than welcome im not an expert at writing scripts or any sort of write up but i will do my best to fix any flaws or add suggestions.

Try eclipse its not 2.3.6 based but it runs wonderfully on the mx2. As for the script its mostly an untested product. I've runt the Ubuntu 12.10 one once with little issue but the rest I haven't tried. Just remember its a two part script that requires the running of both pieces to work.
As to having a rom 2.3.6 based there really is no point we have fully functional roms that run beautiful with what we have not to mention that there's no real point in going back if we get a kexec or second boot working as further versions are going to be based off of a newer kernel and version of android.

I'm glad it was able to help. I tried to make certain things more autonomous but unfortunately it does have to be specific, and handled as such. So there's not a lot of flexability in how the process is done by the user and by the script itself.

I've tested some superuser managing apps and so far the only one that works for our device is chainsdd's app. Clockworkmod's and chainfires supersu do not work well or at all. Please use the chainsdds app from the market or keep the one that the script installs as they work best.

Sorry. I meant to get back to you earlier, I've been busy. No. I'm running Windows 7. Used the Windows Pack and ran through the instructions/README and got hung on that last step when the script wouldn't run.
I have a bootable CD of a few Linux OS's should I try one of those instead of through Windows? Is there a specific OS that the Linux script doesn't work on. I am a fan of LinuxMint and CentOS but I also have an Ubuntu CD as well.

Hum I wonder what broke the windows script. Um really its up to you I can try to tear it apart and see if what's wrong but I'd need specific information from you in what's happening. But I'm a better Linux script writer so the Linux scripts are a bit more stable. Ubuntu 12.04 and up is best because the repositories have adb and fastboot included and can be installed. Both of which the script requires to run but any of the linux ones should work.

[Q] Proscan PLT7044k, Rooting, Roms, Any way to make it Suck Less?

A friend of mine picked up a Proscan PLT7044k. Great cheap tablet from BigLots they wanted to gift me as a late birthday present. Sure it's cheap, but cheap can be good right? Especially if it's a backup device or something to tinker with.
Trouble is we're running into some issues. Fine. Great it's a cheap Chinese tablet. We both get that we're not expecting nexus or ipad mini or even kindle fire quality. However GetJar is, apparently, not working correctly, Amazon Marketplace (which it was linked to in the device) will not let you change settings, and My friend isn't wanting to try rooting to get google play working just yet because we're not sure if the Thread found on the matter has all the bugs worked out.
This Thread seems to be closest to what 'we' want but the model number is different (it's supposed t obe the same device save for the one we're working with included a hardware keyboard/case, but one never knows.)
Of Note when queried my friend only saw a one gig internal storage device instead of the four gig advertised and described the external media slot as a SD slot instead of a micro-sd.
So, since I am, for the moment, treating this device as different and not wanting to risk bricking before info can be gained on if it's worht keeping or taken back, trying to figure out the following:
Very minimum how does one get google play on this gizmo.
Is there anything that can be done about the touch screen lag?
Is there a CyanogenMod port that will work or other custom rom that might help with the issues of lag?
Any advice would be welcome/useful. Even 'RTFM' with links to other threads.
Edit: Be Aware my 'primary' computer is running linux (peppermint OS3, ubuntu 12.04 based distro.)
I just got this tablet. You have root accesses out of the box. There are 2 ways I have installed play store. Through root explorer and through adb push. google gapps for jellybean. here is the manual and firmware proscanvideo.com/item.asp?itemnmbr=PLT7044K . I can make a tute anyone needs.
I ended up taking mine back and getting a Nook Touch. Sure I'll still need to root the thing to get much use out of it beyond being an e-reader but even with it not-rooted it's still actually a pretty good experiance.
Sorry Icouldn't be a trailblazer to anyone getting a proscan and wanting to improve on it.
a noob, but I honestly have tried...

ok, I have tried very VERY hard to find out how to root my proscan plt7044k. I've tried following the few links that I have found, and have found them to be broken. Or the items just won't download onto my computer or just flat don't work. It appears that what I have to do is to find a driver for this thing so that my computer can recognize it, and the Curtis website doesn't give any driver information. Yes, I did download their manuals and tech material, and they DON'T WORK. All they provide is a powerpoint thing that says to "find program x, do y, etc", without providing that program. I cannot find a driver for this p.o.s. ANYWHERE, nor any that would work for an earlier model and then also "might" work for mine.
I really want to get rid of the "getjar" crap, as well as all of the bloatware that google puts into these things!

You probably have a driver problem. I use ADB Konnect (wireless ADB) To push over wifi.
Is there any possible way to flash a custom ROM to it the factory ROM has too much crap on it memory wise?

I Titanium backup to uninstall the bloat. You also can use Root explorer or adb to rename the apk extension of the bloat to get rid of the eyesore

proscan 7" tablet.
you kngoo root, make sure your using windows...anything past vista.
i used wkindows 7 or 8 from an internet cafe and my proscan is plt7602g and it worked fine...i even reset from the android service menu (green dead dude) and it worked but make sure most of all that you have the verify apps off so you can root it. because it will still be a danger to ur tablet. there is always a bricking chance, one you instakll kingoo root and run the program plug in ur tablet press root and the app takes care of it all. and if you google kingoo app or kingoo root it will show a main website and go from there
i got my proscan PLT1077G and i haven't found a **** yet i want to change my tablet android OS but don't have a developer who can help us with this one i think proscan is not that popular

[GUIDE] Setting up ADB and fastboot on an x86_64 Chromebook

Hey everyone!
I know that one of the biggest barriers for completely ditching my MacBook Pro for my Pixelbook was the ability to use ADB and fastboot (upgrading Android versions, flashing TWRP, factory resetting). ADB and fastboot are installed on later versions of Chrome OS; unfortunately, these versions are too old for devices like the Pixel 2 (XL) and there isn't a ton of information on how to get them updated and working properly.
As such, I created an installation script that will push the latest versions of the platform tools to the local binary directory and install a small wrapper script so you can use the commands as you normally would. The scripts should be fairly easy to read if you have a basic understanding of the command line, I have commented them so it's clear what is going on.
The installation script can be used to install the tools for the first time as well as upgrading to newer version as they come out. The changelog for each version can be found here.
Please see the README for the full instructions and let me know if you have any questions, enjoy!
On Chrome OS Canary version 69 on an ARM CPU, ADB and Fastboot are both installed by default.

Do they actually work? They were installed on my Chromebook Plus out of the box but they are too outdated for my Pixel 2 XL.
Will this work in Acer c720p, or is it too old? If not what about Samsung Chromebook pro? Would it have to be in developer mode?

In theory, it should work for both.

Do you know if there is anyway to run a shell directly from the downloads folder in ChromeOS? I couldn't get fastboot to function properly.

fastboot doesn't report version but adb is 1.32 which is old. I don't know how recent adb was added to Chrome OS but I am sure I have used them in the past. I have lived in Canary for the last 2 years so I have no idea whether it was a Canary thing or widely available within developer mode.
Another option since you are in developer mode is Crouton and install a fullish version of Linux. adb does work within a Crouton session. Even if I was to update the version installed in Chrome OS, I would need to reinstall it every day since Canary is updated daily and sometimes two or three times a day. Even stable can be updated mid-cycle so you could get caught with the outdated one at an inopportune time.

For me personally, I bought a Chromebook for Chrome OS, not the hardware, so Crouton wasn't really an option.
You don't need to reinstall these as they are in /usr/local/bin so they're not touched during a Chrome OS upgrade.
I don't think I understand "Crouton wasn't really an option". Crouton is a simple script that installs various versions of Linux desktops that run alongside Chrome in a chroot. Probably any Chromebook made can install Crouton. The only thing required is to be in developer mode, which you are. I choose to run my sessions in a tab but it can be a separate window. Not much you can't install and run in these sessions.

Would help if I actually did proper research into Crouton :silly:thanks for the clarification, I'll have to check it out soon
Crouton was developed by a Google employee. You can create a pretty complete development environment. An i7 and 16 GB RAM are becoming more and more appealing.

If you mainly just want command line to install packages.
There is also chromebrew, almost a chromeos version of homebrew on mac.
Hello!
First off I would like to thank you very much for making this installation script! I've been waiting the whole time since I bought my Chromebook about 3 weeks ago for somebody to post a script to install ADB/fastboot since the recent added support of the 2 to ChromeOS. ADB/fastboot support is the entire reason why I bought this Chromebook, if it did not have it, I would of been stuck buying a Windows laptop. I was really excited when I read they just added support recently for ADB/fastboot! I have a couple of small problems and if anybody can help me out, it will be greatly appreciated.
1. I cannot get ADB to work yet on my Pixel 2 XL, but fastboot works no problem. When I try to use ADB, it says device is "offline". Sometimes it says "unauthorized" when I've accepted permissions and click 'always allow from this computer' etc etc. Do I have to use a root shell to run adb/fastboot or can i use a regular shell like on my old windows laptop? Do i have to use sudo before every single command as well or just 'adb devices' like I would on a windows. I know these are noob questions but it is because I am a noob and have only used ADB/fastboot on a WIndows 7 laptop before this.
2. My other question is when I powerwashed and it booted to the user sign in screen, I tried to click enable debugging features but it said not all of the features could of been enabled. Wth does that mean? How can I fix it? Does the chromebook stay in developer mode after I powerwash it if it was in dev mode before I powerwashed it? I did return it back to the dev channel after the powerwash bc I noticed it was back on stable.
Do I have to install a custom version of Chromium OS before this will work?
Thank you guys so much, and thanks again @nathanchance for making this script. Also thanks for your Pixel 2 XL kernel, I use that as well. Cheers!
My device is the Acer Chromebook R11 .. 32 GB HD / 4 GB RAM with a 64 GB sdcard in it .. 2 in 1 tablet/laptop .. x86_64
ok so how do I copy the files I downloaded to another directory? The chrome files explorer only shows drive and downloads

Will you be building your own kernel and or system images for pixelbook?

No. The entire reason I got a Pixelbook is so that I could have a super stable local device and do all my heavy computing on a remote server.

Hi Nathan,
I also have a Chromebook plus which is not x86_64. Have you written a script compatible with the Chromebook plus?
Thank you for all your contributions to the community!
