Many apps missing after new DU flash - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I flash a lot of ROMs on my Oneplus 2 very successfully -- LOS, RR, Havoc OS on 2nd try, Liquid Remix, crDroid, etc.
But some ROMs -- like Dirty Unicorns and Omnirom -- flash without errors, but leave me with a whole new "unused phone" situation. There are 10 apps of my about 100 installed.
Google during the install never asks if I want to restore apps and data from a phone or the cloud. So the install is very fast, but nothing I expect to see on my phone is there. I have tried manually installing Google Drive to fix this and logging to get the backups it holds. But they're not there.
Of course, they are there, but after a fresh DU (or Omnirom) install, I can't see them. I go to another ROM to fix the problem.
What's going on here? Why do some custom ROMs leave me with so much data and apps missing?? Thanks.

MIUI 8 or Marshmallow (RR, LineageOS)- switching proposed? How to keep data and apps?

Hi there,
currently I am still using MIUI 8 Global (7.4.20) in Beta version with weakly updates on my RM Note 2 Prime and I am quite fine with it (above all the really impressive fast charging time).
But I also want to keep in touch with newer versions of Android as far as possible without giving up the overall usability of my phone and its components (Battery Live, Charging Time, GPS, Camera, Audio...).
So I try to keep myself informed about newer ROM versions for RM Note 2 which seems unfortunately not be supported by Xiaomi regarding newer Android Releases.
That lead my to RR and Lineage OS with RR seeming to be the better choice.
Now I am wondering what would be an efficient way to flash one of these ROMs with newer Android over my current MIUI ROM while keeping or restoring all my data, pictures, chats, navigation routes etc.?
Does Xiaomi PC suite also work with RR or Lineage OS?
All experiences, hints and tips are welcome!
Did someone else switch from MIUI to a newer Android ROM and what is your proposed procedure?
Thank you in advance!
Bye
Best way to get a custom ROM is to flash twrp!
When install with twrp you have to choose if you want to clear data, cache, dalvik, system, internal, external and otg, and so if you want to leave your data, the best option is to install Titanium backup (better with pro version) here you can safe all your apps (with all its data of course) and leave the backup in your internal.
Afterwards you can download any ROM you want (LP recommended!!) And better place it external if available.
Also to download gapps (Google apps) recommended
Than backup all your data with Titanium backup and you can boot after backup in twrp which is needed for custom ROMs!
Here you have to clear system (otherwise you will get error, because of cm based and miui based ROMs) and data+dalvik/cache.
Now you can choose with the install method your ROM and gapps and install.
Now you have to boot up system and after setup go into settings, build number 5times clicking, go to developer options and grant root access to all apps!
Now you have to install Titanium backup app again (pro recommended again) and choose the restore option
Now it will reinstall all apps with all its data and you can go on!
Hope I could help a bit
@Noobsi:
Thank you! Helps quite a lot. But what do you mean by "LP recommended"? Which ROM do you refer to here?
Regarding changing ROM (in my case this would be from MIUI to some kind of MM) I read that restoring Apps with their data is not recomended due to possible filesystem changes and things like that.
He means Lollipop (android 5) recommended, because marshmallow isn't stable enough.

Thanks - this will leave me with MIUI further (since they [Xiaomi] will never bring it to newer Android versions it seems).
Try Dual Boot Patcher: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447534
I use it to have MIUI 8 and Lineage OS 13, and when reboot, shows a menu to choose where want to boot.
Wow, did not even know such kind of things exists for Android mobiles too!
Thanks a lot! Are you happy with LOS13? Why did you choose it (instead of RR or something else)?
What are the diffs between MIUI8 and LOS13 you are experiencing? And which OS are you using more often?
And regarding Dual Boot Patcher: I also discovered other multi boot managers in Play Store for example, could I use them too or are all of them restricted/proposed to/for certain devices?

Random freezes, FCs and TWRP backup errors

I've been experiencing random freezes that kick in about two or three days after installing a new custom ROM. Freezes occur, followed by FC prompts, which can be "Wait"ed and the app works again, but after a day or two of use, it just becomes painful waiting for the apps to resume or phone to wake up.
In the course of backing-up I've noticed that TWRP Nandroid backups are running into read errors (code 255). These can be fixed by going through the recovery.log and deleting the files that cause errors and rerunning the backup, repeating until all the corrupted files have been deleted. The phone also runs better after these files have been deleted, but it eventually happens again until the phone is almost useless. What is feels like, is old-time Wintel bad hard drive sector errors and it looks like it too when you see these read errors in TWRP, but everyone assures me Nand/Flash drives don't work like that...are there any other possible hardware issues?
The trouble began after I installed the final Resurrection Remix 5.8.5 (5.8.4 bluetooth didn't work properly). I've now tried also Nougat versions of Resurrection, Lineage and Carbon. Can't bear going back to MM but it might be the only solution.
I've followed installation instructions to the T, installing stock ROMs with Flashtool and then installing ROMs as described in OPs. I've tried both Magisk 14 and SuperSU. I've avoided rooting at all. I've Formatted (rather than Wiped in TWRP) everything except the external SD card. I've restored apps through Titanium. I've fresh installed apps from the market. Nothing works. I haven't tried not installing anything but what's the point of a phone with no apps??
I've followed some solutions posted by others with the same problem but not everyone describes their problem all that well but I still run into the issue. BUT, I keep seeing threads that die and no one says they fixed their issue - common but I'm thinking they gave up.
I haven't tried MM, but I might try Oreo first, if it's stable enough to run. Support in ROM forums is pretty thin though nowadays... (check my other posts).
Anyone got thoughts on how changing kernels might help, and which kernel to use for Nougat?

Unknown source apps deleted after reboot

Hi,
I have had a search of XDA and cant find the following issue mentioned anywhere.
So sorry if missed something but i need help with the following.
I have in the last 2 days installed the following several times each
[ROM] [8.1] Resurrection Remix O v.6.1.0 [POLLUX/POLLUX_WINDY][UNOFFICIAL]
and
[ROM] [8.1] LineageOS 15.1 [POLLUX/POLLUX_WINDY][UNOFFICIAL]
and did the usual wipes, factory resets etc and although both roms work fine my issue is when i install apps from unknown sources.
I can install them fine, and they work without issue.. but if i reboot any of my apps from unknown sources are removed..
There is no trace of them, i have turned off the newer security stuff in the settings, tried with and without root,
with and without developer options..
Just need to know what im missing to get these apps to stick ..
The apps I have tried are the uber app, the sricam app, and apkpure .. none of which will install on the Tablet from google play
so im trying via sideload and they have all previously worked on all previous roms (mainly 7.1 roms)
cheers
shaun

Open Gapps broken?

I just tried to flash open gapps 6/4/2020 stock for version 9 arm64, after I wiped cache and dalvik and rebooted all my gapps were gone but google pay was showing. I could see all the others were installed looking in system apps though. Trying to run google pay produced an error, see attached. Play services version seems to be broken? Help?
Confirmed, definitely broken. Logs attached. If anyone finds anyone in the open gapps project that actually cares feel free to let them know but from my past experiences it looks like open gapps stock is now over for 9. Might try a larger package, I'll post here if I do and it solves the problem.
Update: The Super package has the same issue.
There are other GAPPS like Nik GAPPS.

True, but that's another set of issues, and wouldn't I have to get Open Gapps off first?

Yes, but let's back up a step...
What LOS custom ROM do you have installed, for which you need GAPPS?
Just want to make sure we're all on the same page.
LOS-16 and LOS-17 need different GAPPS and of course stock firmware doesn't use GAPPS.

Of course stock uses gapps, unless you like wasting your storage to hold the updates and then having to re-update if you land up having to restore or do a factory reset, been doing it since Gingerbread and it works great, or it did, although the majority of updates can easily be moved to the system using Link2SD I have yet to find any realible means to move play services to the system without breaking things which is a major headache, gapps solves that issue and also allows me to choose which apps I want included in a rooted stock rom. The reality is that custom/non-stock ROMs are generally broken in one way or the other and more often than not it's just not something I'm willing to deal with, in addition there's useally too much junk included that I just have no need for and if I did I'd change my stock rooted ROM to fulfill that need. I've actually never seen a stock ROM that didn't use gapps. I'm perfectly happy with rooted and reasonably de-bloated stock and change things I feel are needed, for example adding in call recording, most custom ROMs would actually leave me doing more work to take things out and put things back in, like why take out the native sms, clock, calculator, calender, keyboard etc. they work, they are free and ad free, they are useally small and thus not really bloat and they are often hard to replace with similar function anywhere near their size.

No, you never flash custom ROM GAPPS on STOCK firmware. It already has built in GAPPS. GAPPS are usually only for LOS/AOSP custom ROM, not even stock based custom ROM. So there's your problem.
If you want to do it, go ahead, but I just know what I've been told by several devs.
When I read your question again, it seemed strange the way the wrote it, so that's why I wanted to clarify.

No my problem is that suddenly play services in Open Gapps does not work, worked fine until this flash. Open Gapps is just Gapps, all versions should be the same as released by Google, as stated I've been doing it since Gingerbread and the only issues it's ever caused is when Open Gapps is broken as mentioned in the first post and photos has also been broken for awhile now as it no longer runs in system/app so I install that from play store and move that myself with Link2SD which puts it in system/priv-app where it works. Not sure which question you are referring to, Open Gapps is broken currently and it's my understanding that all Gapps have to be removed to switch to any other and then there's the learning curve that will come with it. If I had the time I'd just create and maintain a package for just core that wouldn't touch the rest. That will likely become a necessity in the future at the rate things are going. So yes, after all these years I'll continue doing it since it's proven to work, assuming it ever gets fixed though I doubt it will as photos has yet to be fixed and that just requires a change in the install script.

How long have you owned the V30?
You'll need to factory reset the phone to remove the extraneous GAPPS you installed when stock firmware has GAPPS and different resolution versions of the apps.
You still haven't explained why you need gapps on stock firmware. Every V30 dev who creates a stock firmware ROM says do not install GAPPS.
From Aeron Li, the A.IS. and A.I.X. (stock firmware based ROM) dev, who says NOT to do what you are trying to do:
the bad thing is that he can flash/install mismatched gapps and that may make firmware work wrong, or even make safetynet issues and not working Gapps-related things

Boombox dev (another stock ROM) and JohnFawkes one of the devs who create the TWRP flashable zips has said not to flash GAPPS over stock firmware.
You're probably going to cause conflicts. But it's your phone.

I dunno never had any issues and flashed open gapps a few weeks ago, 20200513 to be exact on this phone, no issues. Actually it was explained in detail. Updates take up space, wiping data removes them and hence bandwidth and time is wasted. Moving updates into system saves space and bandwidth. Again I don't do anyone's ROMs I use stock and make the few changes I desire. The only real issue that requires it is moving play services to the system since everything else is movable using Link2SD.

Can We Restore Google Backup In crDroid Rom with NikGapps Core ?

After Flashing Rom, On first boot There was no option shown for Copy Data.. There was only an option related to crDroid cloud. After Rom boot there was also no option device set-up just like miui rom or aosp rom. Now everything working perfect and smooth in this ROM. But Now I need to my all messages which I had taken backup on my google drive.
Please help if any working method is exist to resolve my problem.
I think you installed the basic version of nikGapps. Try with a larger one, like the omni, in order to have Google/Pixel Setup Wizard.
This way the setup should ask you to restore a google backup.

I faced the same problems when flashing NikGapps myself. Although there is a download page listing all that goes into a package, there is hardly enough description. I'm sharing the solution I found here.
I tried installing the omni and the full version of NikGapps. Both packages included the 'Google setup wizard' but the wizard only gets triggered into action when it either recognizes a new account being added or at first boot after a factory reset. I didn't take any chances and factory reset the phone since it had nothing on it yet.
Other apps that I wish I had installed before were Android Auto, Google assistant and their dependencies. You can't flash them later (they give an error) and they don't work properly if they're installed from the play store.
