I just found a 2-in-1 laptop in the recycling, and fixed it up to use as my new tablet. So, I was going to sell my Tab S3. However, I decided to use it as a file server instead to share my data easily between my two laptops. Should I just use a simple FTP for this, or should I go all out and root it to actually make it into a dedicated server? This is my first time turning something into a server, and am unsure the correct process to use.

Its a bit rough around the edges but works..
Webshare lite is another market app that has this functionallity. The paid version allows you to mount your Nook color as a hardrive on your PC. Then you can move directories or multiple files by cut and pasting 'till your hearts content. No wires needed. I often use it to paste audio book folders to my phone and it has been really helpful turning my NC into a true tablet.
I was using something like this, until someone pointed me towards the Samba Server. So now when I fire up the PC, I just browse to a network share on the NC and move files wirelessly.
EDIT: Well, I see you were the guy that pointed some to Samba. How is this better/different?
I tried browsix too - works great. One caveat: you don't even need to enter the IP address: just go to browsix.com on your desktop on the same wifi network as your nook, and you'll have access.

No difference. If u have samba setup then u don't need this. This is just another option
hi all
Have tried to connect Tab 10.1 to my mac but no joy. Apparently OS lion doesnt support kies BUT can i connect via usb in the same way i would on galaxy s 2? I cant find any info anywhere to help.
I want to transfer files from mac to tablet and using bluetoothis too slow due to file size.

don't know about the usb hookup but i'm running osx leopard and found that the easiest way to connect to my macbook is with an ftp connection. i'm using cyberduck (free) on my macbook and an app called file expert on my tab. file expert is like astro, but it allows you to share files via an ftp connection.
once you get it set up your tab file tree will show up on your macbook screen and then you can just drag/drop from finder. the whole setup process took me like 5 minutes...
on my home wifi network i'm getting transfer rates of about 3mps. a little slow for huge files, like movies, but perfectly fine for anything else. it's actually really nice not having to hook up with a cable. i may just use this as my go-to setup even when android file transfer get's updated for the tab.
if you google it there's a thread somewhere that details how to set this up...

If you are wanting to sync with files and playlists in iTunes, i use iSyncr. There are free options for USB amd WiFi as well as Mac/PC. The full versions are only $.99 if i recall. Ive used it on my Hero, Evo, Epic, Transformer, and now Galaxy Tab10.1. I have synchronized videos, podcasts, and music. Not really tried photos. Another useful function: it has an option to push new photos, amazon mp3, and video files from your android device to your computer.
The developers are responsive and nice to deal with. So I highly recommend as this solution as stood the test of time and Android updates. That says alot as ive noticed some apps can easily fall off the market or become out of date.

I’m looking to get the 10.1 but am having a few reservations due to MAC incompatibility.
To test whether it would work or not, I downloaded Kies for MAC 2.0 onto my Macbook pro X 10.5.6 and although it allowed me to transfer music files onto Kies (even those purchased from itunes) it wouldn’t add any video’s regardless of the format (I tried Xvid, .avi, mp4 etc) and message was ‘no files found’. Note, I don’t have the device yet, just wanted to see if Kies would work at stage 1 and get the files in a ready state to transfer as and when.
I really want to like this tablet and am trying to move away from Apple but if I can’t even transfer video files across easily, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of point and is forcing me to stick with them. I also really wanted a tablet which would play most things thrown at it without having to convert and this is the only tab I’m looking at given its size and thickness. I’m sure there are apps that could be used, but if I can’t even get the files onto the 10.1 tablet….!
Most of the files I have are .avi and a few mkv, any feedback from MAC users and their Galaxy 10.1 would be really appreciated and how they transfer the video’s onto it.

I have the same problem with my tab i picked up last Friday. Kies just terrible and just won't let me add video files to its library so that I can then transfer then on to the tab.
The best method is wireless transfer. Use something like File Expert or ES Explorer to transfer via wifi if you set up a share on your Mac. The share does need to have SMB turned on. Click on options in the shared folders section in settings and tick SMB.
or if you use Filezilla on your Mac you can set up a FTP server on your tab using 'FTPserver' app and then type in the ip, user name and password that you set up and can transfer over movie files that way.
If you find out any better methods please let me know.
i wonder whether this way can help you:
before you connect your GT to PC, setup your Galaxy Tab for Kies connection following the steps: press the Menu key. In the Menu interface, select Settings>Wireless and network>USB settings>Samsung Kies.
Note: Ensure your USB cable is unplugged.
My current laptop is going on 6 years old which should tell you that I don't push it very hard as far as computing power goes. Mostly what I'm doing with the laptop is email and web browsing - which is why I'm thinking the Tranformer prime + dock might be a good replacement for it.
I already know how to get my company email on it since I'm a long time Android phone user so that's not an issue.
If I were able to establish a VPN connection to the corporate network, that would clear up the few reservations I have in that if I could VPN in, then I could use remote desktop to connect to my desktop PC and do anything I needed to do that way. The issue is I'm not going to get any help our of our network administrator.
Personal devices are allowed as long as you agree to and sign the remote access and mobile devices policies. What I currently have is the installer for the Cisco VPN client (not AnyConnect) and a .pcf file. To get remote access from a Windows laptop I just have to install the client and import the .pcf file and I'm in business. For anything else I may need, its legal according to the policies but I'm just not going to get any help with it.
It looks like a lot of the connection information is in the .pcf file I use on Windows - but the password seems to be encrypted. Is there some client, either built in to the TP ICS build or that I can get from the market that would allow me to just import that .pcf file like I can in the regular VPN client? Or is there some other way to extract the information I need from the .pcf file. Like I said the network admin is extremely unhelpful and whatever I do will have to be using the resources available and on my own dime.
This is an important issue for me in that if I can't get some confidence before purchasing...I may have to stick with the Windows laptop. Anyone else familiar with this situation? I'm sure I can't be the only one.
So, today im back with another guide, today ill be teaching you how to turn your Android TV Box into a personal Cloud!
A few of you may ask, why? Well theres a few reasons
1. These devices run off a 5v power supply
2. For the price they are, its definately the cheapest alternative to purchasing cloud space
3. For the specs, they are quite impressive
4. Not only can you use wifi, but these devices have LAN aswell
So for anyone who wants to do this, simply check out my youtube video, it takes a total of less than 2 minutes to set up(Deducting all my explaining)!

Step by step -
1. Download and install SSHDroid on your device from the playstore or link below
2. Open the app, if the service is not started, click start at the top right, the status should change to ready
3. Download the setup server files i created from below and open the SetupServer.bat file
4. The script will prompt you for an IP address, in the SSHDroid app besides address you will see something like [email protected]:2222 your IP address is inbetween "[email protected]" and ":2222", in this case 192.168.1.109, type it in and press enter
5. You will notice 2 scripts are generated from that and a file, you can then run the CloudFileManager.bat or the CloudTerminal.bat depending if you wanna upload/download files from your cloud or do things within terminal
If you do wanna access the server from your device, you can download ESFileExplorer, open it and open the FTP tab
Click "add" and choose SFTP, then input the details that the script generated in details.txt
You can then transfer files between your phone and cloud!

I used Armbian+apache2(with PHP7.2)+Nextcloud server before but your cloud is runing on Android right? This is good idea. May be need a NAS drive like 2TB for storage. Android devices got poor wifi performance. I recomend LAN connection for cloud.

seems to be very minimal difference between WIFI and LAN, im guessing its using the hardware at its limit, i got 2.9mbps upload speed while the Beeting S1 was using an SSD as primary storage(apollo lake processor and 4GB RAM with Samsung evo SSD)
if i find a way to improve performance i will let you know, i just feel using TV box as a cloud server is a very efficient way of doing things for both the price, simplicity and flexibillity

What im saying is i think its a hardware limitation, the processors and the amount of RAM your device has will surely limit speeds(Upload/Download) somewhat.
I just have no idea what the limit is, but then again my internet is actual trash so you may be right, who knows

You need to open the port it uses in your modem or router. The use your external IP and the port to connect to it outside of your network. Password protect everything though to be safe.
P.S. can anyone reupload the files?
