Rom recommendation - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Hi Guys,
I'm looking for a rom recommendation that meets the following criteria please:
All features working especially camera and Bluetooth calls and music audio
Stability
Up to date security patches.
I have tried the Lineage 17.1 official builds but despite trying a variety of gcam suggestions found on this forum, cannot find one that works without immediately crashing.
Are there any such roms at this point in time or do I need to stay with stock for now?
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Looks like there isn't much development going on atm. If you don't need Android 10 then maybe try some older versions of LineageOS.

Be prepared that on Lineage OS roms the smart cover detection and Always on display won't work with the G5 (LG-H850). That's why I moved back to stock. Fyi, also the official Netflix app did not work for me with LOS 16 and root.

Thanks guys, Lineage 15 doesn't look to be too bad. Anything later then either camera or bluetooth doesn't work properly, thanks for your thoughts though

Current State of LineageOS 14.1

Hey guys. Does anybody know what bugs/missing functionality we currently have with the LineageOS 14.1 nightlies? https://download.lineageos.org/h830
I'm not a huge fan of LG's stock ROM, but I would like full functionality of my phone if I switch to a custom ROM. Thanks!

You can never get full functionality of LG Stock ROM on any custom ROMs.
Even though I have not flashed LOS, I can tell you few things that may not work.
1. Wide Camera
2. IR Blaster
3. Most Probably any friends modules if you own them.
I'm interested in knowing too before I try it. As long it's stable with all cameras working, I'd be fine.

How do you expect anyone to read through 300+ pages where things change all the time?
I asked the same question on Reddit and people were more helpful:

Good luck on Reddit, the 1st reply in the 1st link is already total and utter bullsh*t
Given the choice of being spoon-fed crap on Reddit and using the search here or simply checking the last few pages ... I'd go for XDA, but that's of course up to you.

Well, I've been on los for a while now..
-As far as I know NFC is not working (on not using it so no idea, but it seems to drain the battery an not work properly)
-BT works for eg headphones but not for headsets
Charging is still an issue. It is faster now but still not even close to fast charging. An on a 3rd party charter or is ridiculously slow
-the wide angle camera is working but you have to toggle between the cameras to get to it. The auto focus might be a problem, but it is mostly solved I think.
-playing music is sometimes a drag, and can be laggy
-FM radio is non existing, not supported, will probably never be...
Other issues have been solved, other pop up, but since there are weekly updates, that's what it is.
-be careful, root has to be installed separately and if you don't do so, immediately after installing the ROM, you will most likely end up in the famous Twrp bootloop..
Before installing it I'd read at least the last 20 pages in the forum, these should give you an idea... Or go to the fulmics ROM. It is stock based so everything should be working. To my knowledge all the LOS based ROMs share the same issues.

Oh what is this - LineageOS 15?

Working:
RIL
Audio
Display
Bluetooth
Wifi
Sensors
Camera
Fingerprint
Broken:
VoLTE?
I will release when I want to.
o.o this one fixes the display error for internal storage space!

In my opinion nougat and oreo are the most unexciting Google OS I know. It's nice to have, but half of the first year after release devs on XDA and even Google itself trying to bring back the performance or/and battery life the OS version before had.
Not to mention the problems with Magisk etc.

I suppose you're right. Neither Nougat or Oreo have brought significant changes, they have both been 'minor' updates with subtle changes to improve certain aspects of the OS. The last major update to Android was Lollipop, when the entire appearance was drastically overhauled from previous versions. I'm only excited because we just have to take what we're given, and any update to update the appearance and usability of Android after an entire year is a refreshing change! Even though Nougat was only a small update, it feels unbearable to me when switching back to Marshmallow without the new quick settings swipe-down; the one before the entire notification area appears. So even the small features can make a lot of difference to the overall experience! I'm still really looking forward to seeing the changes made in Oreo for myself when it comes to the Axon 7.

I don't get why people say this, honestly. Just because you didn't get a visual overhaul like you got from KitKat to Lollipop doesn't mean there weren't significant changes. Visually the OS is already at a level where there's no need for a major change (it has been "ready" since Lollipop, imo; Marshmallow, Nougat, and Oreo have all had small visual tweaks but have stuck to the Material language), and most of the tweaks work "under the hood." Oreo will bring Project Treble, which may just be the most significant change in Android in the last few years. It also brings improvements on the behavior of notifications and background services or apps. It's an incremental update, yes. But it's by no means a small update.
@Gases
We talked about excitement.
I mentioned the problems with the new OS updates, which brings maybe more security but also many problems to custom ROMs. Furthermore there are more problems in the first months. I don't need visual tweaks.
Project treble is mainly positive for stock ROMs. We will see, in which way custom ROMs can profit of this new feature.
Background battery eating apps are no problem on custom ROMs based on LOS, if you use the internal features or external apps. But again. It's nice to have already implemented.
Finally I am always thankful for all kind of ROMs and kernels devs provide to the community. And I was always someone who donated to say 'thank you'

I am not the dev but this is probably more a promotion thread. Final builds will surely be on developement thread.
Some devs are working on oreo right now.
Let's wait and be thankful for their work.
Here is a small update about the situation. Since the most common stuff is working im going to release this rom in 1-3 days. But don't expect to much. This rom is still WIP.
Working now:
RIL(Calls, Sms)
Audio
Most of the stuff (NFC etc.)
Broken:
Camera
Fingerprint
VoLTE (Will be probably broken until we get new blobs)

Probably since they just got audio to work and the ROM is very experimental.
Really looking forward to testing this when the first release is posted on the forums. I'm just hoping the camera and fingerprint sensor will be relatively simple to fix. Thanks for everything you've done so far!

hopefully cam and fingerprint will fixed soon.

Actually it would be nice if you can upload to test for us fp and camera is not important for me.

I was just looking over in the Nexus 6 forms and to overcome the camera issue for them they had to upgrade from 7.1.2 - 8.0 and then restart the phone. So there is hope especially since the Nexus 6 is a 32-bit phone and I'm pretty sure 8.0 was supposed to be 64-bit.

What's the most stable ROM?

I've always loved LineageOS. However, it's always had some bugs that keep recurring like after a certain point I can't open the wifi settings so now I can't add new networks. And even worse, there's a bug that causes my phone to restart again and again and again for no reason. This has happened on LineageOS 16, 17.1, and even pixel experience(9) too.
So now, I think the time has come for me to just say **** it to the best ROM(which I think is LineageOS/PE) and hello to the stablest ROM.
If you can suggest a custom ROM that would be great but if you suggest stock I understand.
Thank you!

Can anyone recommend a good minimal custom rom for MI A3?

Hi,
I'm used to installing, testing and adapting custom roms for android. I even used to write one "minimoto" for the old Moto Droid series back when I had more time.
Nowadays, I'm a busy dad who can't spend lots of time testing things out, so I'm reaching out for help in finding a good, minimal, stable rom for my MI A3.
Don't care what version of android it is, just stability and minimalism/battery are all that matter.
So far I've tried
- CRDroid - fast, minimal, excellent battery life, but with no disrespect to the developers who are in the early stages with this port, it's got way too many bugs (like no GPS, website forms failing for weird reasons, busted playstore requiring manual fixes........).
- EvolutionX 6.22 - a weird mix of very fancy configurable UI elements, but missing apps like camera, and lots of bugs. Gallery doesn't work at all, phone hard locks apps like signal at least once a day, requiring a reboot. A bit slow, and again with no disrespect to the developers, too buggy for daily use.
Can anyone help me find something that just works, and has the minimal amount of services/apps pre-installed?
Failing that, any stable rom and I'll use ADB as root to remove the clag myself.
Thanks for your time,
Thingonaspring
Cool, you've tested those already.
Have you tried PixelExperience? (I've not tested yet, been waiting for someone else to do it )
Now testing pixelexperience, and it appears so far to be very solid.
Fast, has working GPS and camera, no gallery app, but installing google photos fixes that.
@thingonaspring be on the lookout for lack of updates, one of the maintainers declared the ROM as EOL'd but I'm not sure if someone else picked it up.
Checking back in. It's defintely pixel experience for the win.
29% battery use in a day, no crashes.
Admittedly I didn't use it much, but that's just a superb result.

I hear you on the lack of updates. As long as the security layer updates itself, I'm not inclined to worry too much.
I do wish I had enough time to maintain my own rom again. Maybe in a few years when the kid starts college......
@thingonaspring which one of the many PixelExperience versions did you test? How is testing going? My gf's Mi A3 stock has many bugs and I'd like to get a custom ROM on it for her. Is the process easy enough (bootloader unlock, recovery, flash)? Any guide you followed I could use too?
Good point, there's more than one pixelexperience. I used this one :-
[ROM][12][MI-A3] PixelExperience [AOSP] [Permissive]
[ROM][12][MI-A3] PixelExperience [AOSP] [Permissive] PixelExperience for MI-A3 [laurel-sprout] What is this? PixelExperience is an AOSP based ROM, with Google apps included and all Pixel goodies (launcher, wallpapers, icons, fonts, boot...

There are still quirks to this rom, I had to switch off adaptive battery (the default) as I was missing loads of notifications from Signal app, and it's crashed once or twice requiring a reboot, but nothing as bad as I've seen from other MI A3 custom roms.
I had a bit of a journey figuring out the flashing process. It turns out the trick is to ignore the slot a/b stuff and just flash everything everywhere. So flash recovery to slot a+b, the flash the rom to slot a+b, and wipe the data partition (factory reset, all data lost). To guard against that, copy any data you can to SDCard, or better still a PC, before flashing.
See this question, and @heinhuiz excellent answer, for more info on how to flash a slot a/b system.
Confused by slot a/b and recoveries
Previous android phones I've used - and there have been a lot of them - have used TWRP for recovery, and that's allowed backup of system+data. You then flash a rom to test, decide it's not for you, restore the system+data, job done. The MI A3...
forum.xda-developers.com
TL;DR - it's not like twrp recovery on older phones. The recovery+kernel both occupy the boot partition, so it's more a case of flashing the recovery+kernel that ships with your chosen rom via fastboot, then using that new recovery to install the rom itself, from a zipfile on sdcard.
In this process having an a/b slot for the boot and system partitions is just an unnecessary confusion. Flash the a+b recovery both to the same version, then do the same with the new custom rom (flash A, reboot, flash B, reboot), then clear data and get on with your life.

Bro, I'm using Corvus OS 12L. Can't believe this is more smoother and faster than stock rom. Best rom ever. Better than pixel experience it has no customisation, but the corvus has a lot.
couldn't find corvus, but I've settled on this now

And it's good. One tip, goto settings->battery and disable the pixel battery plan, just use the default one. Without that change I had apps hanging and deep-sleeping, causing me to miss messages from signal/whatsapp.
Battery is fine - I get 2 days out of it with no drama.

GSI Questions

Hey I have a N10 that I'd like to update to a newer version of Android, it looks like GSI are the only way to do that, but I have a few questions:
What is a recommended Android 12 GSI?
I saw that there are problems with biometrics, have those been solved?
What camera app are people using?
Has anyone tried the Android 13 GSI from Google, and if so is everything working?
Thanks!
From the ones I've tried, I'd recommend Ancient OS or CrDroid if you want customization or maybe DescendantOS or Pixel or something like that if you want less stuff. It's pretty easy and fast to take a look and flash one then switch so try some out and see which one you prefer. All of the ones I've tried have booted and worked fine except SparkOS, though wasn't on newest patch and I let the developer know of it so might be fixed. I've tried out majority of them.
I haven't had issues with biometrics. I use BSG's gcam mod for camera.
Haven't tried it yet since my phone broke and I'm stuck with a really old backup phone, but I'd expect it to be pretty buggy still, might have to wait for phh patches to be able to use it as a daily OS.
