Huawei Mobile Services, or HMS, is Huawei’s alternative to GMS, consisting of user-facing apps as well as core background services. The idea behind HMS is the same as that of GMS — to provide an experience that is consistent across devices and independent of the platform update. Much like how GMS is made up of app elements and core elements, the HMS ecosystem comprises of HMS Apps, the HMS Core, and the HMS Capabilities that the Core enables through its available APIs.

HMS Ecosystem has seen its monthly average users increase from 420 Million globally in July 2018 to a huge 530 Million by July 2019, while developers registered on this platform grew from 450,000 to 910,000 in the same time period, and HMS Core app integration grew from 20,000 apps to 43,000 apps. Google does not release figures for its GMS integrations, so getting scale here is difficult against the #1 player, but these are still impressive figures in absolute terms. According to additional figures revealed by Huawei, HMS Core has a global reach of 530 Million users in more than 170 countries (including China), while still providing features such as cost-effectiveness, a unified portal for one-stop integration, and precise user targeting through multiple promotion channels. Huawei also claims to be compliant with international security and privacy standards, including GAPP, GDPR, and local regulations within its ambit.
All of this will merely remain marketing points if HMS Core does not incorporate the APIs that GMS Core provides. In order to be a replacement for GMS Core, HMS Core needs to provide similar, if not better, functionality to developers, if it wishes to persuade them to consider itself as a valid option and migrate over from using GMS Core. HMS Ecosystem is currently limited only to Huawei devices, but even on its own, this is a massive subset of Android devices. Huawei alone has shipped over 200 Million smartphones this year so far, which is a substantially large number for app developers to take notice. As an app developer, it becomes essential to adapt to these devices as well as other Huawei devices that may not ship with GMS in the future. Even if GMS makes a return to Huawei, HMS continues to be part of Huawei’s larger ecosystem strategy, where the smartphone becomes the central focal point that is used to control connected IoT devices. So adapting your app to play well with the HMS Ecosystem does make a compelling business argument. You don’t want to make the same mistakes that Snapchat did when it ignored its Android userbase for years and only woke up to pay attention to them very recently.

Developers in the Codelabs exhibition area
Social Coding: Difficult, but Fun and Rewarding
Huawei Codelabs serve as training camps for developers who hope to hone their coding skills. This year's sessions drew hundreds of developers, from novices to veteran coders, providing them with a unique opportunity to experience the full range of open capabilities offered by Huawei Mobile Services (HMS), with technical experts from Huawei on hand to offer assistance.
In the exhibition area, developers were presented with three separate competition types (related to AI, HMS Core basic capabilities, and HarmanoyOS respectively), each of which challenged and engaged them in distinct ways. During the competitions, on-site staff and technical experts provided participants with professional-level guidance, for a hands-on coding experience, helping them quickly grasp how to access capabilities opened up to devices.

The competition testing the HMS Core basic capabilities was open to junior and intermediate developers, and ultimately attracted the largest crowd. The security capability, one of the key capabilities provided by HMS Core, has seen some of its kits integrated into a range of apps that have proven indispensable in daily life, such as those related to financing, news and reading, and online shopping.
Safety Detect Cracks the Top 10 Most Attractive Open Capability List
Safety Detect, one of the main open security capabilities offered by HMS Core, detects five common security issues, which are: threats to system integrity, fake users, app security, malicious URLs, and malicious Wi-Fi networks.
System integrity detection determines whether the device environment is secure; the fake user detection judges if the current interactive user of the app is genuine; the app security detection enables developers to obtain a comprehensive list of malicious apps; the malicious URL detection clarifies the threat type corresponding to specific URLs; and the malicious Wi-Fi detection checks the security of the Wi-Fi network that the device is connected with.
Developers integrating Safety Detect in the Codelabs exhibition area
According to a post-event survey, participants included a significant number of developers who had already integrated HMS kits and Safety Detect ranked among the top 10 most integrated kits. Developers in attendance expressed an eager willingness to integrate the open capabilities of Safety Detect into their apps. Besides, Safety Detect also made it to the top 10 kits that developers showed greater willingness to integrate into their apps.
HMS Core security services exhibition area
Following the conclusion of the competitions in the Codelabs area, developers went to the adjacent HMS Core security services exhibition area, where security service vendors and financial payment app vendors dialogued with Huawei technical experts. Interactive demonstrations, such as immersive one-minute animations, provided attendees with a firsthand look at the HMS security ecosystem. The informal, face-to-face format of the event, also provided them with a chance to exchange ideas about app security technologies.
HMS Core security capabilities showcase in the security services exhibition area
During the event, an exhibitor opened foreign apps installed on the test mobiles to offer a direct side-by-side comparison for the effects of Huawei security services on secure and un-secure devices, showcasing the robust safeguards in place. Enterprise developers were among those who came away impressed, noting that they planned to work more closely with Huawei in the near future to bolster the security of their apps released outside of the Chinese mainland.

With applications across 18 categories including news, social media, entertainment, and more, AppGallery prides itself by providing users with a high-quality, innovative, and secure apps experience. This is the result of close collaborations with global developers on three fronts. First, a set of fully open Chip-Device-Cloud capabilities to accelerate app experience innovation. Second, a comprehensive full life-cycle operation management support to help developers succeed in business. And third, one-stop operational support for developers worldwide covering the entire development cycle, to incentivize innovation and ensure ecosystem prosperity. With 33 years of science and technology experience, as well as technical expertise thanks to a focus on R&D, Huawei provides strong backing for ecosystem development.
AppGallery has recently teamed up with Taxi Libres, Columbia’s largest taxi company. With more than 30,000 vehicles available across the country, Taxi Libres has more than 30 years’ experience in transport, as well as insurance policies that protect the passengers they ferry. They are also part of the Columbia National Police Cooperating Network. With the Taxi Libres app, city dwellers in Columbia can book taxis at their convenience. Both Huawei and Taxi Libres engineers worked closely, especially to fix bugs on the app before publishing. Huawei also offered their phones for app testing. As a result of this close collaboration, the app was published on AppGallery in just 10 days.
“The taxi market in Columbia is a competitive one for local operators as Beat, DIDI and Uber occupy a large share of the pie. Our challenge was then to increase traffic, downloads, and taxi users via one central platform. Given the large market share, Huawei enjoys in Columbia, especially when more than 50% of our taxi drivers were using Huawei mobile phones, and the potential we see in AppGallery in gaining more clout, our decision to partner with Huawei was a natural one,” said Maritza Hernandez, Director of Technology, Taxi Libres.
The Taxi Libres App on AppGallery is enabled by five different HUAWEI Core and Capabilities Kits, optimizing Huawei’s unique hardware and software capabilities for an innovative experience – HUAWEI Account Kit, HUAWEI Analytics Kit, HUAWEI Push Kit, HUAWEI Maps Kit, and HUAWEI Location Kit. A first in Columbia, the Taxi Libres App is integrated with Account Kit that is equipped with simple, secure, and quick sign-in and authorization functions. Huawei users who are logged into their Huawei account can directly and conveniently login to the Taxi Libres App.
Analytics Kit, exclusive to Huawei, provides multiple capabilities to analyze user behavior and attribute data, thereby allowing Taxi Libres to gain in-depth insights into their users and how they interact with the app to finetune the app experience. With Push Kit, users can use the in-built instant messaging and real-time message receipts function to communicate with their drivers. The company can also accurately push messages to select users in tailored messaging styles.
Location Kit provides hybrid locations, combining GPS, Wi-Fi, and base station location data, to get precise user locations more quickly. The Map Kit has collected more than 120 million pieces of POI information and over 344 million addresses, covering more than 200 countries/regions. This brings about a higher degree of accuracy while using up less memory.
Huawei constantly works on collaborations with the world’s top app developers to create quality apps. All applications developed in collaboration with Huawei, along with thousands of other quality apps, are available on Huawei’s open and secure app distribution platform, AppGallery. One of the top three app marketplaces globally, AppGallery is available in more than 170 countries and regions and connects 700 million users to Huawei’s smart and innovative ecosystem.

Social media has long been a ubiquitous presence in most mobile users’ digital lifestyle. There are more than 4.33 billion social media users in the world with 99% of them accessing the platforms via mobile. Needless to say, competition is at an all-time high especially for incumbents who have the technology to compete but are overshadowed by its older competitors.
Among these aspirational challengers is Likee, the short video creation platform that is making waves among mobile users globally and boasts cutting-edge video shooting and editing tools. Being a young company, they wanted a platform partner who could not only help them grow their userbase, but also offer the support they needed to enhance the overall user experience of the app.
Huawei was the ideal partner for Likee – the developer could not only onboard AppGallery, the top three app marketplaces globally, but also leverage the powerful HMS Core to improve on the app experience. As a result, the collaboration turned out to be overwhelmingly positive – the app was able to resolve its technical issues as well as grow the platform’s userbase to more than 115 million monthly active users.
"We are excited to work with Huawei and bring Likee to millions of AppGallery users,”Likee expressed .“The Huawei team not only demonstrated keen insights to our app, but also actively worked with our developers to further optimise the experience on Huawei devices. We are touched by this dedication, and we look forward to more opportunities down the road to work with Huawei again.”
Facilitating engagement with enhanced sign-up process
Prior to the partnership, both visitors and existing users had to go through a multi-step log in process before they could engage with the content on Likee. This wasn’t ideal especially for simple engagements such as editing a quick clip or even liking and commenting on a video, as the friction point risks user abandonment.
As such, the Likee team integrated the HUAWEI Account Kit which facilitates simple, secure, and quick sign-in. The Account Kit enables users to easily sign up or log in using their HUAWEI IDs, making the entire process effortless and seamless. It also offers multi-device support so that users can enjoy access across different active devices, providing outstanding convenience.
In addition, both Account Kit and HUAWEI ID are designed with users’ privacy in mind. The HMS Core capability supports two-factor authentication (2FA), and complies with GDPR as well as industry-standard protocols such as OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect. Similarly, HUAWEI ID, a service provided by Aspiegel across Europe, is awarded with the European Privacy Seal certification. With these security measures, Likee provides its users with a peace of mind which encourages adoption among them.
Delivering content to users efficiently and competently
Likee also integrated the HUAWEI Push Kit which provides Likee with a powerful push service that promises a message delivery rate of 99% within 10 minutes.
The Push Kit boasts a global coverage of more than 230 countries and regions, and a highly capable distribution channel that can handle upwards of tens of billions of messages. By leveraging its capabilities, Likee is empowered to notify users about the latest viral content on the platform in a timely and accurate fashion, incentivising users to revisit the app and facilitating greater user engagement.
Monetise traffic with quality and privacy in mind
Likee also adopted two additional HMS Core – the HUAWEI In-App Purchase (IAP) Kit and HUAWEI Ads Kit – to monetise its highly impressive app traffic.
The team at Likee was able to introduce a convenient and secure in-app payment method with the IAP Kit. With the HMS Core’s support for multiple mainstream payment methods, it creates convenience and facilitated greater volume of in-app transactions. In addition, all data involved are encrypted and anonymized, empowering Likee to provide users a safer payment environment which encourages users to make more in-app purchases.
Along the same vein, the Ads Kit offers Likee access to the HUAWEI Ads Publisher Service that enables it to display high-quality multimedia content across six distinct formats – such as Banner, Native Rewarded, Interstitial, Splash and Roll. The variety helps the developer to promote ads in novel ways, appealing to user and encouraging click-throughs
In addition, the Ads Kit uses the open advertising identifier (OAID) – a non-permanent device identifier – to help developers personalise the ads while protecting users’ privacy. The OAIDs can then be used by third-party tracking platforms to provide conversion attributions and improve the monetisation of the app. This results in a win-win situation where Likee users gain exposure to products and services that they are interested in, while the developer generates revenue to drive further app innovation.
AppGallery provides strong growth opportunities for all developers
The HMS Core integration, on all accounts, was a huge win for Likee. The team not only enhanced app features and added Quality-of-Life improvements, but they also achieved remarkable growth – the global userbase bloom to more than 115 million active users with a 30% jump in revenue. In addition, more than 80% of all Huawei users are using their HUAWEI IDs to access Likee, signalling the strong popularity of the Kit among the community.
The entire collaboration serves as a testament to Huawei’s technological capabilities as well as commitment to its partners. Throughout the partnership, Likee had access to a dedicated technical support team from Huawei that actively assisted with the technical process which allows the developer to finish the integration in just four weeks.
