In a few days, my phone will be receiving an OEM unlock option. I tried checking whether my bootloader is locked or unlocked. I've only seen one Google result where someone said Samsung locks their bootloaders. So Samsung locks their bootloaders, right? And if so, is it a royal pain in the ass like an AT&T phone? I've been trying to install a ROM onto my AT&T Galaxy S4 and that has been.....lord have mercy.
This is my first unlocked phone (my S9+). I know 'unlocked' refers to the CARRIER and not the bootloader. But once root options are available, how hard is this going to be for an unlocked phone?
Also, when I look for ROMs, root methods or whatnot, do I have to search for kernels/ROMs/whatever for the Unlocked version or can I use an alternative (like a Verizon S9 and it will be the same).
OEM Unlock no way jose
Waited weeks now still not there
Enabling OEM unlock doesn't mean you will be able to unlock the bootloader.

The USA G965 phones would have a locked bootloader regardless of if it came from a carrier or not. Searching seems to indicate that because the bootloader can't be unlocked yet then the OEM unlock won't appear (or it doesn't do anything at all).
.
As for unlocking the bootloader I imagine it is a real PITA. I would imagine that any sort of bootloader unlock would probably come around (or after) a root method is found. Now when that will happen is not certain
any progress toward unlocking the bootloader of the SM-G965U1 ? I bought this Samsung phone from Samsung, and would hope that developers are finding some way to cure the decisions that seem to be in place.
Even though it is supposed to be Unlocked, that probably meant only OEM unlocked, and even then I don't see it directly as an option in settings.

"Unlocked" in this context means SIM unlocked. It also means that it is free of carrier branding and apps. It cannot be rooted.

does that mean that the SIM unlock in this version is ALWAYS present, or should the option show up or be triggered in some way?
It is a nice phone, but it is disappointing that root seems out of reach.
Additionally, I don't seem to get as good a signal as I did with the S5 with TMobile CSC and LineageOS, , in the same location in the middle of the city.

It only means that the firmware is intended to be loaded on phones Samsung sells, which would be SIM unlocked (assuming you didn't buy a carrier version from Samsung). There is no "SIM unlock" option or anything like that. The phone is either SIM locked or it isn't, regardless of firmware.
In any case, none of that has to do with rooting the phone, which remains impossible.
Signal strength has been worse for me on S9+ (all firmwares I've tried) than the older S7 Edge I had. Different phones with different hardware. Not much firmware can do about that.
Is there anyway to get VoLTE in the US for LYA-L29?

Get your carrier to enable volte on your service. Restart your phone and it should work

Do I have to take it to the store for them to do it, or can I just call customer service?
The other response is incorrect. Huawei has a whitelist of carrier MCC/MNC for VoLTE support. US carriers are not on it for LYA-L29.
VoLTE working fine in the middle east for the LYA-L29 for those who are wondering.
I don't know about North America though.

Volte works fine on the P20 Pro. Since that phone was never sold or supported in the USA there is no reason US carriers would be on a whitelist.
Volte also works fine on the Xiaomi MI Mix 2 & 2S which aren't sold or supported here.
Same problem in Canada too...the carrier has to work with Huawei to turn the feature on. I upgraded from an S7Edge which WAS VoLTE enabled by the carrier, so the account has the feature, but it did not automatically carry over.
Looks like there will be a few months before we get this, seeing how long it took for P20 Pro.
Anyone on UK EE with VoLTE available?

Hola
Can you please elaborate. For some of our carriers in Canada VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling are only enabled with carrier branded phones. This is particularly true for Rogers and Fido. If you are dealing with Shaw, Telus and Bell I have seen different scenarios that certain non branded phones working ok for VoLTE and other phones not working at all.
I am with Fido and I bought the Mate 20 Pro from them and VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling work.

I'm with Videotron...hence the difference. They have been notoriously slow to enable the feature on new phones.
On the flip side, I was getting VoLTE on my old phone which was NOT bought from them (it was first registered on Koodo).
Rogers does not allow that -as you mentioned.

A follow-up on my own post:
- we all knew the Canadian version L0C is NOT dual-SIM - I finally got a chance to test this. Bummer.
- I put in my phone a Rogers SIM and VoLTE and VoWiFi WERE INSTANTLY ENABLED. So the software supports it, has to be enabled by the provider via the SIM cfg. Somewhat positive news - as we all thought, Rogers would only allow VoLTE on the phones they sell, the test proved this is not the case.

I can definitely tell that the call quality is a LOT better in my case with VoLTE on, as it uses HD codecs (G.722).
You can try for yourself by turning VoLTE ON and then play with WCDMA vs LTE settings...one will disable it right away. In my case even the call button in the dialer shows HD.
And yes, the damn icon is hideous and won't go away even with System Tuner.

MintMobile does provide Volte but they have no idea which phone models it works on so they don't advertise Volte. I had Volte functionality on MintMobile with One Plus 5, Essential PH-1, Xiaomi Mix 2 & Mix 2S, and Huawei P20 Pro.
But it does not work with this phone.
On Telus, the first time I set the phone up it made me jump through a hoop where I went to a Telus site and enabled the VOxxx stuff. Strangely, it seemed to be kinda random whether it was 'on' or not, and before the last 2 updates I don't think you could even trust the icon to be telling you the truth. I'm not sure why this feature is a big deal, codecs or not the voice quality seems fine on this phone regardless. Some people claim that enabling any of the VO stuff gobbles battery, I haven't really noticed.
Much like the AOD, it is sad that we have almost no control over the icons at the top - especially when space is at such a premium there.
I am currently in sprint, and had a V30 plus phone.
I lost it and cannot find it, so I had to switch to my backup which is a moto g5s plus (bleh)
So I am looking at getting a LG g8x, and had a couple of questions.
1: does the under screen fingerprint reader work with the screen off?
All I could find is even you turn the phone on to the unlock screen. The v30 you can go from screen off to unlock without having to do an extra step.
2: does it do volte? Specifically on sprint.
Volte support from sprint says: G Series (G7 and newer models)
My guess is yes but with these carriers these days you never know.
Anyone in sprint with a g8x that can confirm this??
Yes the fingerprint reader works with the display off
I'm curious if anyone knows the compatibility of a US Verizon s23 ultra and T-Mobile's network. I assumed they would be compatible as long as its carrier unlocked however I'm having issues getting my Verizon s23 ultra to accept my t-mobile sim. Any insight from someone with more experience is welcomed.
Verizon locks the phone for 60 days. After that, you're good to use whatever SIM you choose (you may have to flash the U1 firmware to get all features working though).

Its unlocked I manage about 40k in devices so they unlocked it for me without much hassle but they cant answer why my t-mobile sim isnt working.
That sounds like it's still locked to me? Are you using the pSIM or the eSIM? There have been some reports recently that the pSIM gets unlocked and the eSIM remains locked to the original carrier but if you're trying to use the pSIM and they say it's unlocked, I don't know.

Can US model S23 Ultra bootloader be unlocked? My SM-S918U1 doesn't have the OEM Unlock option after enabling developer options. After some searches I tried switching the date and time back at least 7 days and no luck. I also saw on XDA that K0mraid3s-system-shell could work? I never had this issue with Pixel and One Plus. But S23 cameras made me switch
No u or u1 in the US can ever be bootloader unlocked ever
Well don't say never. The united states S9+ S10 Note 20 ultra were boot unlockable.

It's still relatively new and being worked on BUT there are apps being made that allow for more stuff without root. Shizuku is a big one, it gives apps more permissions than regular android by using USB debugging. LSPatch is being developed as a nonroot alternative to using xposed modules BUT very few modules work with it currently. Hex theming for oneui using shizuku to make TONS of ui customization. Swift backup (titanium backups replacement basically) uses shizuku. There are more but there's no current list of what currently uses shizuku that I can find.
I have seen and heard a lot about Hex as stated above. Know some that use it, but I never have. But from what I have seen it's pretty Amazing
What S23 Ultra models are bootloader unlockable? I too have a sm-s918u1 and the option is missing. I might as well return it and go back to my Note 10+ which was able to do this.

It's easier to tell you the models that aren't OEM unlockable
If your model ends with U or U1 it's not unlockable

So if I have one of these models, you are saying I can't root it or install a custom ROM AT ALL??? Its basically a pointless annoying nagware paperweight that I have to return back to Best Buy? Where would I be able to find the OEM Unlock capable models?

Completely never happening unless someone finds a MAJOR security flaw in android, it's not happening by any conventional means ever.
It's the North American models that are locked and can't be unlocked. You'd have to buy a global or international one from eBay or Swappa or somewhere else, even buying directly from Samsung in North America gets you this model.

Supposed I get that one, and I root it. What issues would I run into like with password manager, bank app, etc? What can be done in advance to ensure smooth operation? I don't intend to do anything major, just install some xposed modules.

It depends on the CSC it comes with. CSC is country codes for different carriers that tell the phone software what works and what doesn't in that region. There are ways of changing the CSC as long as there are multiple CSCs on the device to pick from. Also there's several guides on this sub forum and others here on XDA that explain changing CSC

Afaik models that aren't u or u1 won't work on 5g in the states but 4g/lte etc is fine and CSC doesn't affect OEM unlock. That's the extent of what I know and I'm not claiming either as fact because I don't have a non u or u1 model. I'm just repeating what I've read by others experience.

quick question, just got my new SM-S9180. Do you know what the CSC needs to be in order to unlock the bootloader? The current CSC is S91800ZS1AWA6, and the OEM unlocking setting in developer options is non-existing just like on my sm-s918u1.

CSC doesn't affect OEM unlock. Therefore it doesn't affect the bootloader. CSC only affects what features are available in which country (features like Samsung pay, Samsung health, call recording, etc.) Nothing to do with the bootloader.
Ah I see. So basically it just determines what bloatware that my phone comes pre installed with that I will remove anyways.
