lost VoLTE after restoring stock ROM on T-Mobile (h932) - LG V30 Questions & Answers

I was using an AOSP rom for several months but decided to roll back to my stock oreo rom backup in TWRP. Only issue is my VoLTE is not working anymore during calls. I am on Oreo (H93220s) and never updated to stock PIE.
Is there an easy way to flash a modem or something without having to completely start from scratch? I found a 20r modem in one of the T-Mobile threads, but not sure if I should flash that on 20s. Thanks for any help.

Of course verify you have an LTE connection. I am sorry, just making sure
Then try a Network settings reset, if you haven't already: Settings -> General -> Reset -> Network settings reset. Then restart the phone.
If that doesn't work, you could try re-loading IMS settings using the LG Hidden menu: Dial *#546368#*932# using the stock dialer -> Field Test -> IMS Setting -> Test -> Load Preset Configuration -> Initialize Configuration. Then back out twice to Field Test -> IMS Setting -> Test -> Restart IMS process. Give it a few minutes.
If that doesn't work, then I'd say probably some firmware wasn't restored to stock after using the custom ROM. Try flashing @weakNPCdotCom's FullStock.zip from the thread linked below, factory wipe in TWRP. Once you've verified VoLTE works, restore just the data from your TWRP stock backup.
[STOCK] [H932] [20s] [Oreo] T-Mobile LG V30 Stock Collection (Includes Debloated)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/stock-t-mobile-lg-v30-stock-collection-t3917560
Finally, if that doesn't do it either, you may have to perform a genuine Factory Data Reset from the Android Settings menu. This wipes some persistent data which isn't wiped by TWRP nor by Master Reset. It requires stock recovery, so you will lose TWRP. Personally I would perform a full flash of stock 20s using LGUP in Refurbish Mode. This will also ensure that all necessary TMO partitions are flashed.
I suppose you could flash TWRP to your laf partition (as described in the H932 root thread) then flash 20s in Partition DL mode, everything BUT laf. That way you wouldn't have to start over rooting the phone.
My only concern is that H932 is easily disturbed, sometimes with bad consequences. Being kind of OCD, I would probably go nuclear if it came to this, meaning full Partition DL to 10d (to ensure partitions are straightened out), THEN partition DL to 20s, THEN Factory Reset, verify that VoLTE is working. Then you'll have to start over rooting, including temporarily back to 10d again. But that's just me
Once you got it working and are back on 20s, THEN you can restore just the data from your TWRP stock backup. IOW restoring that backup is your last step.

Thanks for the detailed tips. I have tried everything you mentioned so far, up to flashing the fullstock.zip, and unfortunately that still didn't fix it. I had this problem with another LG phone before, and the only way I could get it fixed was flashing a .KDZ, but I know this phone is a lot trickier considering the root method and all.
Am I able to flash a KDZ and not have it flash the LAF partition all over so I don't have to re-root it? Thanks again.

Got it. Yeah you probably need a full firmware flash.
I think I misspoke in my last post: Of course you can't put TWRP on laf and then use LGUP. Duh
I can't really think of a way to do a full flash (incl recovery) without having to start over. I'm sorry.
Maybe there is a way that others can think of. I'm not my sharpest right this moment.
Edit: Just to make sure, you know your account and SIM are provisioned for VoLTE? And you're on TMO, right? H932 doesn't do VoLTE on other carriers (such as AT&T).
Edit2: If you haven't already gone nuclear, and assuming you're on 20s FullStock.zip, you could try flashing TWRP to laf (as previously discussed), then flash stock recovery to recovery -- if you can find stock recovery somewhere, either as an img or zip. Just make sure it's same version (20s). This should allow you to perform a Factory Reset from the Android Settings menu. If that solves VoLTE, you can use your laf-TWRP to put TWRP back on recovery and laf back on laf. (I hope that made sense.)
Again, I would go nuclear, but I can definitely understand if you want to avoid it. There are also risks when rooting H932, in addition to the work.

So I went through the whole process of flashing back to 10d and redoing root. Same issues. Then my wife tells me that T-Mobile is having network issues all over, even my Verizon phone was having calling issues. What a waste of time that caused me. It must have just been coincidence that the same day I start messing with my phone that the whole network goes down! Thanks again for the great suggetions though.

T-Mobile's having huge network issues at the moment.

Aww man, I'm sorry you wasted all this time on nothing. Best I can come up with is congrats on successfully rooting your H932. Again!

[Q] No mobile network after flashing roms

Would like some help. I have flashed CM 11 and can't make calls. It says mobile network not available. Tried flashing AOKP rom as well and same thing. Mobile data works fine, although i have gotten a popup twice that says 'Google Play Services not supported by your device, please contact your manufacturer' (no noticible issues from this, google stuff i've tried so far works). I have included a screenshot so you can see my baseband and rom version, etc.
Now, i had a great deal of trouble getting a rom flashed to start with, CWM put me into a bootloop and TWRP wouldn't flash anything because it said it couldn't mount /storage when i tried. Used Philz advanced CWM (love it btw, will be using it from now on). Still wouldnt flash the hltespr specific CM11 version so had to use the unified hlte version (it gave me the status 7 asserts issue, but editing the asserts out just gave me a bad file error when flashing). I wiped data/cache/dalvik between each flashing. I don't know if any of that would have bearing on this problem, just including any details i can. Any advice?

Have you upgraded your bootloader to NH7? I know most of the newly-updated CM-based ROMs require you to be on NH7 before flashing. That's most-likely why you weren't able to flash the htlespr ROMs. The unified ROMs no longer include the correct APNs for Sprint, so that's why you don't get service on it. I don't know why mobile data works on it.

No, didnt realize that i needed to do that. I'll do some research on it because i don't have any idea how to update the bootloader. If you have a link to a good tutorial that would be wonderful! Thanks!
Ok so i tried that, found this tutorial, followed it, no luck. Tried full wipe/reset after that to see if it would let me install the hltespr versions, still no dice. Same situation, mobile data works, calls don't. Will have to wait till daylight to try texting so i don't wake anyone up but i suspect that texting won't work either. Has anyone experienced this and fixed it? Lol i really didn't drop $100 on a phone to be saddled with all the Samsung and Sprint baloney that it comes with, don't wanna unroot....
Bump
Anyone have ideas on this? Have continued to try fooling around with the udater-script file to resolve the status 7 problem so I can install the hltespr variant, still no dice. Please someone help!
Bump!
Sorry, I typically don't have access to XDA forums on the weekend, so couldn't answer your question till now.
You flashed only the baseband/modem, not the Bootloader. If you want to update the Bootloader, you need to use ODIN to flash the Complete OTA NH7 Update.
In order to update the Bootloader, you need to make sure that you use the PC ODIN (not the mobile one) and that you completely power off the phone before you enter download mode (don't access download mode by using the extended power menu when shutting down the phone). I don't think you need to do the battery pull that Freeza had in his instructions (I didn't do it when I ODIN-flashed the NH7 OTA update), but it wouldn't hurt to do it.
Thanks for that, I will try it as soon as I get home tonight! The next thing I had decided to try was to unroot, to back to stock, then try flashing that before I start with the custom recovery and ROM. Do you think I should do that first before doing the whole thing or could that work just flashing that with my phone as-is?

Well, I always recommend a full wipe (data, system, cache, dalvik) when flashing ROMs. I haven't wiped my internal storage or external storage since I got the phone, so that's not really necessary.
I don't think that unrooting your current ROM is necessary. Flashing the ODIN OTA update will automatically remove root access, so that's not an issue. Here's the steps I took when I updated to NH7 and installed my current ROM (see my sig):
Make a Nandroid backup.
I always do this just so I have a "record" of what I left behind. It also allows me to have all of my app data that I can restore via Titanium Backup (you have to buy the Pro version in order to restore specific apps from a Nandroid backup). I always store a copy on my ext. storage and on dropbox.
Do a full wipe
As I mentioned above, I always wipe data, system, and the caches when flashing ROMs. While I have to take some time to get the new ROM exactly as I like it, it minimizes any potential FCs and errors that some people get when dirty flashing.
Install NH7 all-in-one via ODIN
I installed the NH7 via ODIN. Please note that this is the fully stock, unrooted ROM and will also install the stock recovery.
Let the phone boot and connect to Sprint. Update Profile and PRL.
I do this periodically whenever I go back to stock (from AOSP). I rarely have connection issues, but updating the PRL an profile can help with those.
Install a custom recovery using ODIN.
My recovery of choice is TWRP, but others have found just as much success with CWM and Philz. Just make sure that you're installing the correct version of the recovery (4.4.X version, not the 4.2.X version). I always reboot to the main system after installing a recovery, but that's up to you. In the rest of this post, I'll say "TWRP," but I really mean "custom recovery."
[OPTIONAL] Make a Nandroid backup of the stock ROM
I always do this, but I recognize that it's not necessary, especially since we can just ODIN back to this image at any time. I just like having the option of having a stock backup on the device (in case catastrophe strikes while I'm away from a computer).
Use TWRP to flash your AOSP ROM of choice.
If you haven't installed any apps or messed around with the settings, you shouldn't have to wipe before flashing, but (in case you haven't noticed by now), I tend to err on the side of caution, specifically: wiping everything (data, system, and the caches) before I flash anything.
Set up the ROM how you like it and [OPTIONAL] make one last Nandroid Backup
Whenever I set up a new ROM to the exact way I like it (statusbar settings, accounts set up, apps installed and configured, etc), I make a nandroid backup of my device. This allows me to go back to that "fresh" image whenever something happens to the device and I don't have to muddle around fixing those minor tweaks. Again, I tend to err on the side of wiping the phone too often and taking too many backups, but I've rarely had issues with my phone and ROMs because of it (to the point where I can spend most of my XDA time helping others with their phones), so it might be prudent to follow the advice.
Anyways, that's how I upgraded to NH7 and installed a custom ROM. Others may take a less conservative approach and you're welcome to adjust any of the optional steps.
Hope this helps!

OK, did all that successfully, when it went back to stock stiil had the same issue. Mobile data functions, mobile network for calls/SMS doesn't. Did the whole update prl/profile and even tried reactivating from settings, still nothing. Was able to install custom recovery (Philz) and the hltespr CM11 variant instead of the unified generic version. Still has the same problem, mobile network not available. Everything else works perfectly. I did verify in settings that it still wound up as the NH7 after everything I did. Note I did a full reset before each thing that got flashed in this process, and one more for good measure after. Let it boot to the system between steps too.
Lol I've been rooting and switching between ROMs for years and have never encountered anything like this. I'm stumped....

Dumb question but are you a Verizon customer or Sprint?
Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk
Sprint, I've had big red before but when they did away with unlimited data it wasn't worth paying their high rates.

Anyone have any ideas on this? I am just confounded as to why this continues even after being reset to stock.
Same Issue!!!
I have the exact same issue and have been trying to resolve it for the last 2 days... Did you find a solution?
I have the same problem on a Samsung Mega. LTE and 3G data work but phone won't dial if LTE is active. It WILL voice dial if only 3G is active. Sprint. CM11.
I had this problem after flashing ROMs as well, but went into Settings>Connections>More Networks>Mobile Networks>Network Mode and selected LTE/CDMA....no network had been selected. That fixed me right up. Weird part is, I could still avcess the web without WiFi....but couldn't make calls or ise my bluetooth headset until I had performed the above steps. Hope that helps.
thanks forget the little things reset wifi and sprint cell extender

Signal problems after upgrading from stock rooted 4.4.2 kk 12b to Jasmine 9.1

Ok, i'm fairly new to this stuff but have successfully rooted and modified several of my devices over the years. I've been attempting to upgrade my vs985 to as close to stock 5.1.1 as i can and after much reading decided on jasmine. I was rooted on kk 4.4.2 12b and I had no problems. the main reason i wanted to upgrade was for compatibility with my android play car stereo. I didn't have twrp so first i downloaded flashify and quickboot then flashed twrp from flashify. All good so far. Next I downloaded jasmine 9.0 and 9.1 or at least i thought lol. As it so happened i mistakenly ended up with one of the files being just the kernel for 5.1.1 35b. Must of been a long day cause I mistakenly failed to backup my current system and proceeded wipe data, cache, dalvik, and flashed the kernel file. As you might imagine it didn't turn out very good. I was stuck in boot loop. Fortunately I could still get into download mode so I was able to use the lg flash tool and I brought it all the way back to 10b stock firmware. Then i grabbed stump and rooted and flashed twrp again. at some point i noticed my cell signal was all over the place, up, down , no signal and it roamed almost constantly if there was any signal. I've had this phone and service for well over a year and never had anything like this at all. I knew it was something I did. I checked the back cover to be sure it was on properly and had good connection with the antenna and all checked out. I decided to go ahead and do the upgrade to jasmine 9.1 hoping this would correct the issue. Well no dice. I did create a backup this time and proceeded to wipe everything and flash 9.0 reboot then wipe nothing and flash 9.1, i guess as you call it "dirty" then reboot again. Here is a link to where i got the zips and instructions
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63305722&postcount=4842
in the instructions it says "RESET factory from within ROM (in Settings) - REQUIRED" . this step seemed strange as why would i do a factory reset on my device and erase everything i just did? would it not return it to original? I wasn't even sure if that was what he meant so i skipped that. After all was finished my signal was still all over the place could hardly make a call. it was bad. So once again I used lg flash tool and returned it to stock 4.4.2 10b, this time I wiped the data, cache, delvik and system. To my complete surprise the signal had not improved, in fact it could have actually been worse. As I said waaaaaay at the top of this post before i started all this i was running 4.4.2 12b, not sure how i ended up with 12b as i don't remember any upgrades after i downgraded to 10b and rooted. I froze the ota's with titanium backup but maybe 12b was pushed before i was able to freeze them. Anyway I couldn't figure out how to get 12b back now so I just flashed the 4.4.2 12b modem instead, This time I wiped cache and delvik before and after the flash then rebooted. This fixed my signal, everything seems normal now. no roaming and good signal. my software build however still shows 10b, but I guess thats correct since I only flashed the modem.
I really want 5.1.1 on my G3 but I need my signal too lol. can any one help me figure out how to get this done, can I flash the 12b modem on 5.1.1 this is where i got the file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/development/rom-jasminerom-v1-0-t2904641 it is way down the bottom of the page. Sorry for the extremely long post i just wanted to make sure i didn't leave any details out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
thanks in advance
@Allen227
i dont know if jasmine flashes the L modem when you flash it, but if it doesnt, that would be why you are having issues after flashing the rom.
other than that, i dont know what would cause modem issues.

@Allen227
TL;DR but yes, JasmineROM flashes the appropriate modem. v9.0 only flashes the 24B modem because it doesn't contain a fuller set of the necessary partitions to allow the 35B modem to work by simply replacing the 24B modem with the 35B one.
You can flash the 35B bootstack after flashing JasmineROM 9.0 and the 9.1 update, or SkyDragon 6.x, but you must not be on the 35B bootstack before flashing either UNLESS you also flash the 35B bootstack again after flashing the ROM.
For reasons why: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=64064555
Edit: I meant to add, the 35B boostack contains the 35B modem and everything needed for it to work with JasmineROM 9.0/9.1.

In the future, please do not post the same thing in two different threads. This is against XDA's forum rules. Also, no reason to hijack an only partially related thread. I answered you in the JasmineROM thread.
Sorry for rule breaking, actually i did not aware of that. will avoid surely next time and thanks for reply. hats off to you.
Thanks for your help guys. Last night I figured out my phone was allowing me to send and receive text messages and make outgoing calls but was completely unable to receive any calls. Signal still terribly inconsistent, it would be on 4g one minute then you could watch as it dropped then no service. There'd be no service for 3 or 4 minutes then it would repeat that cycle again. If I switch from global to cdma/let in settings it would immediately regain full signal. Then the cycle of it dropping out would start again. I got to looking through about phone in settings and realized my imei number was missing, all zeros. I'm assuming that probably is the root of my problems. Not sure what to do, I doubt Verizon can help. Phones not insured or under warranty anymore. I haven't researched this New development on te forums yet it got to late last night. If anyone knows of this problem I could use your help. Thanks

If you go into the main Verizon G3 section or possibly the non-Verizon G3 section and use the search field to search for "IMEI" you'll probably find a helpful thread. I think it involves the QPST program on a Windows PC. You'll need the IMEI that it's supposed to have, so hopefully have that on the box or Verizon's website lists it.
Sometimes that's seemed to happen for some people when flashing TOTs, KDZs or ROMs. I've been lucky, it hasn't happened to me through all my flashing over the past year. Once you get it fixed, rooted and put TWRP on, you can back up the IMEI partition in TWRP. It's called something else in TWRP like EI or something - I forget.
Good luck!

I have spent sooooo many hours on this. The qpst apk wont see my phone I have done everything the tutorials suggest. the instructions are only applicable if there are no issues, in other words, in a perfect world. I'm sure its something stupid and very simple but I don't even have a place to start. First, its hard to believe this works on all OS's, but it doesn't state anywhere what it is and isn't compatible with. that info would be helpful. i have spent 4 hours a day for over a week trying to get this fixed and I'm no closer than i was when I started. Very frustrating. I'm still open to suggestions or any help that can be offered.

Signal problem with US998 on Verizon

I'm having a weird signal type problem with US998 on Verizon, and want to see if anyone has any suggestions. If I start clean (I'll explain in a moment) I get 4G all the time - low signal or not. If I reboot the phone it goes to 3G, occasionally 1X mode, and sometimes no signal, but never to 4G mode even in areas that have really strong signal. As part of trying to figure this out, I've flashed the modem partition with the one from Verizon KDZ, and get the same result. If I boot into TWRP and wipe modemst1 and modemst2 from the terminal using dd (the starting clean), then reboot, 4G magically works again - until the phone gets rebooted or power cycled.
Because of some things I did with my early attempts at using the Verizon modem, which also include updating Magisk to version 17 that day (I first thought the bootloop was from the modem), plus I had dirty flashed 20d, I decided to start from scratch. I backed-up the data partition and made a copy of everything TWRP excluded (media), used LGUP to "refurbish" the phone using the 20e KDZ , and flashed the Verizon modem from their 20d KDZ. Unfortunately the problem remains.
The phone currently has US998 20e firmware, except for the modem is from Verizon's 20d, TWRP, Magisk 16, the Google Dialer & Contacts apps flashed using syndre's provided zip (without the Magisk module) - no other mods.
The KDZ files don't have the FSG partition separate - that was one of my first thoughts, as that usually gets done with the modem. I'm thinking of flashing the System part of the Verizon KDZ, or possibly trying a full flash of it. Could it be the phone hardware itself?
Flashing System from the Verizon KDZ seems to have fixed my problem - I reflashed the modem partition (again) as well, and also did the Persist partition (which I tried before with the modem partition). As part of clearing out some of the Verizon included stuff, I noticed there is some extra configuration (APNs, etc) apps included that may be part of what fixed things.
Basically, If you have a "stock" US998 and have signal issues on Verizon, either do the whole conversion to (or back to) a VS996 by flashing the Verizon KDZ (except recovery), or mix and match (with possible negative side effects) - just flashing the modem partition isn't enough.

Flashing the @westwood24 VS996 20D ROM should do the same thing, shouldn't it? It's just VS9996 20D KDZ with TWRP.

I'm just asking, as I'm not a Verizon customer. But my understanding (which may be wrong) is that flashing that "ROM" was basically the same thing as Frankenstein, except it kept TWRP and all you needed to do was then re-flash Magisk.

My understanding is that using a flashable zip or Upgrade mode in LGUP will flash everything except the Data partition. I used Partition DL mode and flashed only those three (System, Modem, and Persist) - I'm trying to keep away from as many of Verizon's modifications as possible.
If I start to have other issues, I'll probably start clean, and install the whole Verizon KDZ. Otherwise I might start picking at the various Verizon mods, and see if maybe I can figure-out what does what.
I went into the Hidden Menu and forced LTE Only. I have poor signal where I live and honestly 3g blows.
I looked at some of the hidden menu stuff, the problem is some of that seems to be legacy stuff they never removed, and made things worse.

Field Test -> Modem Settings -> RAT Selection is where I forced mine to LTE only

The H933 Custom Rom Experience (Problems and stuff)

Hello, I am an H933 user that has ran into a couple problems that are probably my fault. I have unlocked, and rooted my phone. Then I tried to install some Pie roms.
Things I did:
1. I used this to unlock my bootloader, and root my phone.
2. I tried to install some custom roms. Which then all resulted in a bootloop. (Except The Theory of Everything. Which worked, but was really buggy, and ultimately made my phone restart every 5 minutes)
3. I found out about this. But then noticed that my mobile data was gone.
4. I was on a custom rom without data until I found this page. Which made my data work again.
5. I decided to rollback to stock oreo with the flashable TWRP H933i zip. Due to brightness and volume issues on custom roms.
6. Then data stopped working again. So I used the backup I created when data was working on stock. But data didn't work.
7. I tried again with download mode, but to no avail.
8. I used the same guide from step 4 to try and get data back. And it still didn't work.
Where I am now:
So I am on US98810c with working data and root. Kinda bummed, but everything still works at least.
Theories:
1. I am dumb, and I did something wrong.
2. Use this on an H933 kdz and see if I can change settings to make things work.
Ok, point is. I kinda want H933i to work with data again. Ya know, help a new XDA member out.
Did you make sure your APN settings were correct?

Yeah. Step 4 ensures that.

Hi; you'll have to go back to H933 Nougat as a base then re upgrade to H933i as the partition layouts are different among all. ( Between properly converting you'll want to have 4 kdz files: 2 being whatever the latest of US998 and H933 and 2 being Nougat of both. )
Whenever I had an issue; I'd go back to Nougat H933 with partition DL first so the layout gets changed properly and then afterwards I would use refurbish. (on H933)
I also noticed with our phones I had different effects with the sim card pulled and the sim card in; it worked fixing my data leaving my sim card in more then the latter I believe.
I'm also currently running H933i rooted and with TWRP so if I can backup something for you I'll definitely do so!

Thanks! It all worked out. I combined your method, and another guys thing. Just so i'm not THAT guy, here's what I did:
1. Partition DL H933 Nougat (It was so slow to download from the firmware website. So I uploaded it here)
2. Refurbished H933 Oreo
3. Dumped OP, modem, modemst1, modemst2, misc, persist, ftm, pstore, and recovery. (Reference)
4. Partition DL US988 Nougat
5. Flashed TWRP (did the format data and factory reset)
6. Turned off phone from TWRP
7. Partition DL H933 Oreo (Everything except recovery)
8. Renamed dump files (removed _COMX and replaced it with .bin)
9. Format Data and Factory reset from TWRP
10. Flashed Magisk, no-verity, and lg-rctd-disabler
11. Copied bin files to root of internal storage
12. Did this:
Code:
adb shell
dd if=/sdcard/OP.bin of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/OP
dd if=/sdcard/modem.bin of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/modem
dd if=/sdcard/modemst1.bin of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/modemst1
dd if=/sdcard/modemst2.bin of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/modemst2
dd if=/sdcard/misc.bin of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/misc
dd if=/sdcard/persist.bin of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/persist
dd if=/sdcard/ftm.bin of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/ftm
dd if=/sdcard/pstore.bin of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/pstore
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.bin of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/recovery
13. Rebooted into system with data.
14. I also installed Boombox V.1.3 because I couldn't deal with some of the crapware.
Thanks for the help!

Boombox ROM is very old (August 2018). Although based on H930 stock firmware, it does not have LG 2019 DTS 3D Stereo libs and does not have all the LG improved camera features, plus a lot more it's misssing. Just be aware.

Any better modems for the US998?

Has anyone experimented with modems and found anything worth changing? My cell service is really crap with this phone. Running pie us99830b. Much worse than the K7 I had, two phones and they both have poor service.

What is RS998?
I am guessing it's a typo, meaning US998.
For me the US998 Pie 30b modem works perfectly, whereas the Oreo 20h is poor. It is very slow to latch onto a tower and change towers, and reluctant to make an LTE connection. It prefers HSPA. I am on Red Pocket GSMA (AT&T network).
I tried flashing back to Nougat (full ROM, not just modem) which worked much better, but as soon as I upgraded to Oreo again, the problems were back.
I tried flashing all kinds of ways (Upgrade, Partition DL, Refurbish) to no avail. I also tried flashing to H933, but never could get its modem working. And coming back to US998, the problem was still there (I'd hoped the H933 flash might clear it up).
I've tried wiping modemst1 and st2 partitions several times. I reset network settings, Master Reset, even R&D factory reset (SVC Menu). Of course lots of switching Network Mode (RAT Selection). Nothing will fix this modem.
Lately I flashed the H931 20h ROM (TWRP flashable) and that modem is perfect. However there are other things about that ROM I dislike, and I may go back to US998 20h after all.
I also have a second US998 on 30b and its modem remains perfect with the same SIM. Before that I had an H932 on Oreo which also was perfect (both on TMO postpaid, Red Pocket GSMT and Red Pocket GSMA). And my wife's H932 on Pie is also perfect, with her SIM as well as mine.
I haven't tried flashing the Pie modem on Oreo ROM. I might try that someday.
If anybody knows how to fully and completely reset modem storage (without losing IMEI etc) I am very interested.
Sorry OP, didn't mean to hijack your thread. But that's my experience.
Yes it was a typo.
I'd think that we could use twrp to restore the modem partition from a different ROM? I'm using ATT towers too.
You can simply flash other modems with LGUP. Just don't try to flash one from H932, which has different RSA encryption.
But I would assume that there's often some dependencies between a modern and a ROM.
If you're on AT&T, I have to say the H931 ROM was really excellent as far as modem. It also has a few additional LTE bands used by AT&T which are not supported by US998.
I don't do much lgup but have noticed twrp backs up a modem partition. I'm more curious if different version modems could be used from the stock rom, like the modem from 7 being used on 9 as most of my searching seems to indicate that the poor cellular reception started with the 8 Oreo update.
I don't know if flashing Nougat modem on Pie would work.
Once again, my experience is different than yours, since I find the Pie modem best by far. Better than Nougat, and much better than Oreo. And that's on two different US998 phones, one still being on Pie, the other rolled back to Oreo.
I have other reasons to prefer Oreo over Pie, but the modem is what I miss from Pie. Seeing as your experience is the opposite, even though we're both on AT&T, makes me wonder what other factors may be at play.

Have you changed any settings in the hidden menu?

Yes and no: The second of my US998 (still on Pie) has not had any changes in settings, and its modem works fine.
The first US998 I bought was essentially the same when I first received it (also on Pie). But back then I compared it to the H932 I'd had before (and which my wife still has). I found that it showed fewer bars than the H932 when connected to the same tower and the phone placed exactly the same place. Turned out measured signal strength was the same, just that T-Mobile is showing an extra bar in their ROM to give the impression that their network is better than it actually is. Pathetic!
Then I used Hidden menu->Field Test->Modem Settings->Band Selection->LTE Band to select only the low frequency AT&T bands (5, 12, 17, 29). This is something I'd always done on my H932 to improve reception in my home and save battery, and it's quite effective.
This particular LTE Band Selection menu was always available on H932. I was aware of the horror stories from US998 users back in the days, who got locked into a fixed LTE band after using the Band selection menu on US998 Nougat and Oreo. But I was glad to see that the TMO style LTE band Selection menu is present on US998 Pie. And it works: My phone then only connected to bands 5, 12, 17, 29 and avoided connecting to band 2, which AT&T prefers, but it takes a lot of power and doesn't penetrate our walls very well.
HOWEVER, I later realized that the Reset function in that menu doesn't work on US998 like it does on H932: You have to always choose a selection of bands. Not a huge deal, but I don't like hidden menu changes which I cannot undo.
I was surprised after rolling back to Oreo (via 10d, Master Reset and BL unlock) that the LTE band selections survived. By wiping modemst1 and modemst2 partitions I was able to make the phone connect to all bands again, but if I use Shortcut Master to load com.lge.hiddenmenu.tmo_only.LTEBandSelection (which IS available on US998 Oreo) it STILL shows the selections I made long ago on Pie (5, 12, 17, 29) even after many Partition DL and Refurbish flashes back and forth between US99810d, US99820b, US99820h, H93310h, and several Master Resets. The phone DOES connect to other bands, so presumably it's just a leftover display of the TMO menu settings. Still, something is clearly never wiped!
At first I thought that might be the reason my Oreo phone has such a sluggish modem, which only reluctantly connects to LTE. But when I am on US99810d or on H931h20 the modem is perfect. It's only when I am on US998 Oreo it becomes slow. So I have concluded that my modem issue is indeed a limitation of the US998 Oreo ROM, not caused by the menu changes I made. But it still irks me. If somebody can tell me exactly which partitions to copy from my other US998 (without losing IMEI, serial number etc) I would be very grateful!
So in short: Yes, I made some hidden menu changes on one of my US998 while it was still on Pie, and it worked fine to limit which LTE bands it connected to. My other US998 on Pie has had no such changes. Both of their modems work well on Pie, it's only the one on Oreo that has problems.
(Sidenote: May I suggest you edit the Title of this thread to fix the typo: rs998 -> US998. On XDA thread owners can do that themselves.)
Just noticed that in advanced. BTW my bands reset before when I did a factory reset. Not sure how or why that worked.
Interesting. When you say your bands reset, where do you mean? In the LTE Bands Selection Hidden menu?
If so, maybe what I need (and what I should have done before rolling back) is perform a Factory Reset on Pie.

Yes. Because I initially fubared after I had changed the bands from the default so I did a factory reset then restored the system partition and noticed that it was back at default when I looked again and still is, I gave changed it to global in the settings menu for now which seems to enable more bands. Though I'm still not sure if it would be better to set the bands but getting back to default is a bit too much. I've also noticed settings for 5G NSA and TDA, which isn't even available here yet. Wish I knew what bands are enabled with the default and when set to global in the settings. Also been wondering about interference if bands not being used are enabled. Would be great if there was an easier way to get back to default too, it's just a bit time consuming is all, not too bad with a recent twrp backup but still more time than I typically have lately.

Thank you.
Did you reset it with a TWRP Factory Wipe? If so I am very surprised that it reset the bands, since that merely wipes the data partition.
But if you Factory Reset it using the Settings menu (requiring stock recovery) that makes sense, since it wipes other things that normally persist (such as the FRP account, and who knows what else).
I am tempted to update mine to Pie again and give that a try to see if it makes a difference to the modem when I roll back to Oreo again.
You can reset the actual bands by wiping modemst1 and modemst1. It's just the Band Selection menu will keep displaying what you last selected. You can select something else there and click Save, and it will take.
What interests me is the fact that ANY data persists after Refurbish flash and other wipes on earlier versions. And it makes me wonder if there are some smelly leftovers from Pie unless one performs a Factory Reset before rolling back.
Edit: Just to clarify: We already KNOW there are leftovers from Pie after rolling back, pertaining to the partition table. That's why we roll back via Partition DL to Nougat. But I wonder if there are OTHER undesirable leftovers that could be cleared with a Factory Reset in Pie before rolling back. NOT a Master Reset (button dance) and NOT a TWRP Factory Wipe, but a good old fashioned Factory Reset from the Settings menu (again, which requires stock recovery).

I think hidden menu might be saving some files on the sd card when changes are made as I gave seen the folder created when just going into the menu without making changes or saving.
I wouldn't expect Hidden Menu to rely on SD card for storage, but of course not ruling it out.
In my case I don't have an SD card in my phone, and Internal Storage has been wiped countless times where the LTE band selections survived. And again, possibly other leftovers too. The only things I have yet to try are (A) mess with other sensitive partitions (such as fgs) and (B) update to Pie again and perform a Factory Reset from there. If I had more time on my hands, I'd definitely try the latter.
Edit: I see there is indeed an Android/data/com.lge.hiddenmenu folder on my Internal storage. So you're right it writes something, although no files in that folder. I'm guessing it is for log files. But nothing persistent for sure, as it is lost in a factory reset.
Is the 9 modem still borked for wifi on 10 roms? I'm on 20b modem right now and it seems fine. Fingerprint sensor is still wonky though
How can I tell what modem I have installed on my phone? Where do I find it and what does it say? I am currently on us99830b twrp flashable rom. I have tried a couple of version 10 roms, but do not have Wi-Fi or a tethering hotspot on it (which I do have now on 30b).
I have downloaded the pie modem img file and while in twrp, after installing the ver 10 rom, I have flashed (I think) the pie modem (in twrp, install image>install modemimg>tic modem box then flash and reboot). Is that the correct procedure? Wi-Fi still does not work. I have done that a couple of times (on POSP). But, I am unsure if it installed? Am I on the pie modem or ver 10 modem, even now on 30b rom?
I want to make sure I have done the install correctly before trying other fixes.
Thx, for any help offered. Much appreciated.
