I ordered the MHL adaptor from T-Mobile's website yesterday, so I should get it today (yeah, I paid the extra $6 for overnight shipping).
Does this phone support FULL mirroring (i.e., when plugged in to TV, TV screen mirrors whatever is on the phone's screen)? I used the full HDMI app on my Evo 4G, and it was great for watching shows from HBO GO on my TV.
Has anyone tried it yet? If not, is there a review out there somewhere that specifically demonstrates this feature?
I guess I'll know tonight when I get home from work!

I haven't seen it specifically on this phone, but I've seen the Qualcomm MSM8660 demos showing full mirroring. We should be capable of it, but I haven't tried it out yet.
I'm surprised nobody's tried it yet!
Can you use the normal micro HDMI or do you have to buy the adapter to use HDMI? Lol kinda confused how this works with the new port? Could anyone explain? Thanks
You need to buy an adaptor. Basically, it's a dongle that plugs into the USB (charger) on the E3D. The dongle/adaptor has a HDMI port on it, along with a USB port. You plug an HDMI cable into the HDMI port, and into the TV. You plug a charger into the USB port and into the wall.
So no, the HDMI cable from the EVO 4G (I have one too) won't work.

Back to the issue at hand... does it do HDMI mirroring or not? I have this bad ass HDMI integration in my Prius that is preventing me from upgrading from the 4G until at least HDMI mirroring is confirmed.

According to this demo from CTIA it appears it can, but this is unfinished testing hardware/firmware so it's still not a confirmation:

This doesn't exactly give you an answer with the level of certainty you are looking for but it's a good sign. We should see some end users with feedback on HDMI features on the production phone streaming in any time now that hopefully confirms that it can do this across any application without problems or limitations.

hey rtmeikle . I also got the mhl from tmobile. I hooked it up last night to sadly find out that hdmi mirroring is not supported at all. It was all a big hype it appears. Were you able to get it working? I'm hoping that you were so maybe its just my device....if not, then this phone is going back.
Yep, I got mine yesterday and tested it. It works fine.
You have to have the adaptor plugged in to the phone, a charger plugged to the adaptor, and the HDMI cable running from the phone to the TV.
I got full HDMI mirroring which automatically switched to landscape when I tested Netflix and HBO Go.

Strange. The image of my home screen just popped up on my TV; I didn't have to do anything.
I tested it on the TV in my bedroom, a 3-yr-old Samsung 42" Plasma, nothing fancy.
Maybe tonight I'll test it on my other two TVs and see if it works on all of them.
did you allow the latest OTA upgrade or did you cancel it? I allowed it as soon as I turned the phone on. I also tried it on my 58 samsung plasma hdtv. Its not that old but also not that new.
I'm going to try it tonight on my smaller 32 inch lcd hd tv to see if that makes a difference. It shouldn't though.

Yep, I've accepted the OTAs. And I'm using the exact same adaptor. Did you plug power into the adaptor too? I didnt' try without plugging it in, but I've heard that it needs to be plugged in to work.
Ok, i finaly got it to work. It wasn't a problem with the phone but a problem with the tv. I had to change some resolution settings on the tv and presto! Hdmi mirroring on its full glory
Now, do you know if I can pair up a bluetooth keyboard and mouse? Thats next for me.

This is what I am currently doing. I have hooked up the following.
Mouse: Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000
Keyboard: Logitech MX5500 Keyboard
The keyboard works great. I can type in the applications and setup my keys in the emulators just fine (snesoid etc)
Mouse functionality though is different then you may expect. You don't get a mouse cursor, it just "highlights" selections then you "left click" to go forward. According to my research the right mouse button is supposed to "go back" but is not working for me.
I put up a thread asking others for help with it, so if I find an answer I will let you know.
Updating you on what I found out about the mouse.

the adapter has a USB plug that you use to hook up to a charger, and will charge your phone. Newer TVs are coming that will support charging over HDMI via the MHL adapter, there may be some out but I think will be a standard in 2012 TVs.

the HTC one looks lke it includes a HDMI cable, too, but you can see the usb port on each adapter for charging.

Just wondering if there is a way to get the hdmi mirroring to work without the power cable plugged in.
A little about my phone: hboot 1.4, rooted. Im using Deck's sense ROM (i know it's old, but it is really stable) and using Ziggy kernel. Overclocked to 1.8ghz.
Yes and no. A tv supporting mhl will power your phone and just requires the mhl cable which is usb to hdmi. However, the mhl adapter, which is different than the mhl cable, does require power. What the difference is is the adapter is converting the signal so the tv sees it as hdmi. Because the adapter is doing the work, it needs a power source. Very few tvs support mhl natively. I think it just came out this year in consumer tvs. And when you do get a tv supporting mhl natively, you may have to ditch the adapter and use the normal mhl cable, but I'm not for sure. I'm sure you could still use the adapter, but it would probably still require power.

I'm running into this problem, I had the 3D hooked up to the TV via mhl adapter, and the power plugged in. I was streaming netflix (wifi) to the TV. After 2 hours, my battery went from 98% to 23%.... Any idea as to what gives? When it comes to mirroring, OG Evo was far superior.

I think the power drain is from powering the mhl adapter. I'm not 100% sure of the amount but I think it's 5 volts you get through usb. Figure that's what the phone uses to charge. But now the adapter needs that power for the signal now too. So now you're splitting that 5 volts between the 2 devices. This wouldn't be such a big deal if the screen could be turned off the phone but that kills the mirroring. Because the screen is on, you're drawing mode power.
Another example of charging while using the phone. If I drive using Gps, Pandora, and leave the screen on, I may gain 1% battery increase in 30 minutes driving vs maybe 10% if the phone were just sitting there asleep. Both using Gps and mhl adapter involves the phone actually working, thus using power. The difference is the mhl adapter needs power too so a portion of the charge isn't going to the phone to begin with.

To use a pocket picroprojectors like the Microvision ShowWX+ HDMI on my galaxy note or S2 I need to power the converter. it's very bad iPhone can do video out without external power.
I guess the ship used inside this converter is the SiI9292 MHL-to-HDMI Bridge. I need to power it without power the phone (cut MHL VCC line on PCB ?)
The adapter is not expensive I want to check this... For me the power requirements of the cable is low, But if the phone require power to enable video out my hack is not possible
English is not my native language, so I'm sorry for mistakes.

This is a generic MHL question, for all MHL phones.
I just realized a DIY tiny self powered MHL to HDMI adapter for my (showwx+ laser) picoprojector with PCB from a chinese adapter.
This could give some information to DIYer that want to make a self powered adapter for picoprojector.
The HDMI out work without charging the phone. I just unsoldered the VCC (red) wire from MHL side of adapter.
The hdmi bridge need 60mA on 5V (0,3 watt) and can work @ 3 - 3.3V. I used a very tiny LiPo (1 cell 200mA) to power it. Now it need a tiny charge and discharge controller. It work for >1 hour (deep discharge <3V can killl the small LiPo).

Another, cheaper and easier, option is to use a portable battery. Preferrably one with an on-off switch so that it'll keep charging the adapter even when the phone is fully charged. The other variety will shut itself off when the phone itself is full.
I had bought a $10 portable battery from Newegg that I throw in my car for occasional use. When I use it for MHL when on the go - I use a retractable usb cable to connect it to the MHL adapter. The portability is pretty decent, since the battery itself is less than half the size of the phone.
Well.. I just received my Kidigi MHL cradle with excitement
Two things... it pees me off I cannot use the cradle WITH a case on, like the other Kidigi cradles (ARG!!!! - The pic showed a phone with a case on in the cradle!), and then I discover that the AC Adaptor is defective (loud buzzing when there is no current draw.)
I'll try the HDMI in a bit if I can.

My Samsung tv didn't like the evo 3D's HDMI (worked fine with my 4G). I ended up routing the phone to my yamaha amp's hdmi then to my tv. Maybe try another tv or device.
It's got a built-in MHL adapter? So you can plug an HDMI cable right into it?

Typically doesn't say 'mhl' in kidigi's page though.. but did on ebay.
I have ordered another HDMI cable (v1.4a) just to be sure... but as the ac adaptor is making an audible buzzing, I'm seriously likely to send it back anyway.
I was previously using an HDMI to DVI cable with this, and it didn't work at all. So I ordered a V1.4a HDMI cable instead.
It is most odd, because it seems to work intermittantly. The monitor keeps blacking out for a few seconds, and then working fine for about 20 to 30 seconds.. then blacks out for a few.. then works for 20 to 30 secs....
Not sure what to make of that really. Maybe the auto-rotation is messing it up a bit.. will have a fiddle with the settings.
And now it seems to be working just fine. I had made sure cables were pushed in... maybe the rear wasn't in enough.
Apart from that, I had changed from 'charge only' to 'HTC Sync' (whatever that is), and the phone is now fully charged in the cradle.

How does it look on your TV? What size is your TV? I bought two MHL adapters and NEITHER work on my 61 inch Samsung DLP, but they work on my mom's 19 inch HDTV. However in some areas the picture seems to have a faint checkerboard pattern, especially when scrolling through the gallery. You notice this effect at all?

I will have another look tonight. I'm viewing it on my 26" monitor. Image looks a little grainy I remember, but that's due to it being on about 720p rather than 1080p I believe.
The auto-rotation is a bit screwed up when it comes to 'dock mode' though. You enter docked mode, it displays in portrait, but then when the weather gets displayed it only shows the weather animation and goes into portrait mode (even though the phone is still in landscape), so pushes things off screen. I have no idea why it does this.
My O2X HDMI output is flawless. TBH considering the amount of *****ing the O2X got (even by owners), it's a phone that works very very well.
If I can get the 'issues' sorted out I'll look to get an android bluetooth keyboard and mouse
I have the same dock and the problem is it only charges with 500mA. I made a Tasker profile for a Desk Clock and when the screen is on, the net current is like +2~20 mA (practically zero) So I did the charger mod (soldering together the data pins) on the AC adapter and now the AC adapter itself can charge the phone with 1000mA but the dock itself presents itself as USB and falls back to 500mA. I will either try hacking the data pins on the dock or patch the kernel to allow for fast charging. I have to look into it more though, MHL portion might stop working with data pins crossed.

For a dock that I might have the phone in for a while, i would prefer it slow charging anyway. Means device should be cooler.
I do not have a cradle but my MHL adapter does suck battery and a dirty hack to maintain battery would be great.
I just got an HDMI Adapter for my Canadian Galaxy Tab 10.1 running ICS. Device is not rooted and is running whatever software version is pushed from Samsung. For some reason, I cannot get the adapter to work at all. I've tried different HDMI cables, different TVs and I also tried it on my friend's Rogers Galaxy Tab 10.1, all to no avail. The tablet definitely recognizes the adapter, because when I plug it in, it launches the TuneIn Radio app for some reason, and when I unplug it, all the icons and widgets redraw themselves. I also can't see anything in the settings that deal with the HDMI connection. Is there something I'm doing wrong here?

Although I don't have and HDMI adapter cable, I do know that power cable and plug must be used in conjunction. There should be an slot in the HDMI adapter to connect the power cable.

Thanks! Plugging it in and restarting it did the trick.
In case anyone is contemplating a purchase of the adapter, I do not recommend it. You need to have it plugged into a power source and you need to reboot the device every time you want to use it. Also the resolution is absolutely garbage, my moto razr outputs much better quality and works simply by plugging in the cable.

Hi. I have the same problems that you described. To Summarize:
· When connecting only the adapter, it just redraws the screen. After that, I connect the HDMI Cable and nothing happens.
· When connecting the charge cable or power adapter to the HDMI adapter before inserting it to the tablet, same as the first case.
· When connecting the charge cable and HDMI cable before inserting it to the tablet, same as the first case.
· When connecting the charge cable and HDMI cable and restaring the tablet after inserting it to the tablet, no signal is received by the tv.

I was under the impression that Note 3 supported MHL 2.0 but when I plug in the official HDTV adapter from Samsung (model number ET-H10FAUWEGWW) I still need to also use a USB charger to get it to show through the HDMI input on my TV?
If I don't I get a continual on-screen message on the phone "HDMI cable connected/disconnected" flashing/cycling until I plug-in the Micro USB charger cable on the side of the HDTV adapter.
Any thoughts appreciated
Your TV would have to have the MHL adapter which would mean you would have had to buy it most likely this year. If you are just plugging it into a regular HDMI slot there is not power available this is why you need to hook up the adapter.

I believe you may have ended up getting a copycat adapter (A 1.0 instead of a 2.0), not official. I recently purchased a MHL 2.0 off amazon for $10 and it works just plugging in the tv hdmi without power. The one I got isn't a samsung one, but it is compatible with samsungs (11-pin I believe). The tv I'm plugging into is an OLD tv (got it when hdmi was just coming out) and it works without using an external source- also working fine on my newer tvs. I believe the power for MHL 2.0 is suppose to come from your phone so the tv shouldn't be the problem.

You definitely do not need an MHL input when using this adapter. The whole point of the adapter is to go from MHL (the Note 3 output) to HDMI (the TV input). If you have an MHL input on your TV or receiver all you need is a cable (basically what's in the white box is built into your TV already).
I second the opinion that you got a knock-off. I have both adapters from Samsung and neither of them need external power to operate with a Note 3.
The only restriction with the MHL 2.0 adapter is that it requires that you plug it into a TV and not a receiver, and it will tell you in no uncertain terms if you don't plug it in correctly.
The only reason to plug in power is that it stops your battery draining so fast, the charger provides about 700mA charging current to the N3.

Fair warning though; this adapter is not perfect by any means, you can read my review on amazon (the one that tested it out on the note 3). As noted in my review, I am still waiting on a replacement one (since the original one I got functioned but didn't charge when I hooked up my power adapter), and I'll let you guys know if it's better once I receive it. Even though it doesn't function perfectly, for $10 dollars it does the trick.
Edit: They are sending me an extra without having to return the original, so even if the second one doesn't charge, at $5 a pop I'm happy.

Thanks for alerting me to the counterfeit reasoning that shows this part must be a copycat, I contacted the supplier of this part to us for a partial refund as I will use this as a backup and try and buy an original and prices drop from the £39 or take advice of the other replies in this thread and find a genuine 2.0 MHL non-Samsung version. I'll report back if I have any trouble with the supplier claiming that it is a genuine part and see how far eBay support me.

I second the opinion that you got a knock-off. I have both adapters from Samsung and neither of them need external power to operate with a Note 3.
The only restriction with the MHL 2.0 adapter is that it requires that you plug it into a TV and not a receiver, and it will tell you in no uncertain terms if you don't plug it in correctly.
The only reason to plug in power is that it stops your battery draining so fast, the charger provides about 700mA charging current to the N3.

Thanks babyshanks and CraigAmey for clarifying and also confirming that I don't need it new TV to take advantage of MHL 2.0's not requirement for external USB power. As I said in my previous reply and with this information and going back to the supplier on eBay to us for a partial refund as I will keep this version of the adapter until prices come down from the genuine parts for fine art genuine MHL 2.0 adapter non-Samsung version.

I've read that you need to plug into a TV but haven't had problems. But I am using a samsung mhl 1.0 with 11pin adapter. Didn't need power also. Waiting for Samsung to get on the ball so I can buy a genuine mhl 2 from them.

I bought the Samsung one before it went out of stock and it works in any HDMI input also without the need to plug it to the power outlet, but I'm sure a full HD movie will drain the battery fast..

I think for the price of the official one your better off just getting a wireless dongle, unless you plan to game with it.
Hi guys, here's the response from the eBay seller, "These items were purchased From Kondor Ltd who are one of the major UK Distributors of Samsung Accessories. I would be extremely surprised if they sold fake stock and risked losing there multi-million contract with Samsung over some cheap fake stock. I can only assume the item received has a manufacturing fault of some sort as this is the first problem we have encountered for this product sorry.", so as you can imagine I'm beginning to think there my be a fault with my phone if this message is to be believed, what do you guys think?

The MHL 1.0 adapter doesn't care what it's plugged into, only the MHL 2.0 adapter has that issue.
I just bought a mhl cable through amazon. It has the USB connector for the phone on one side, and a HDMI connector on the other. Directly attached to the HDMI connector is a regular USB plug which I plugged into my power source for my phone (as this is how I understood it should work).
I don't get any messages on my phone that indicate that it is connected to my TV/Monitor and my phone also doesn't indicate that it's charging.
What I read from the product description was, that connecting this cable to my power source would also charge the phone. So could it be my phone is charging, even if the battery indicator doesn't say so? Like it would be charging just so much as that my phone doesn't drain? Or should it clearly indicate that the battery gets charged. Befor knowing this, I'm hestitant to send the cable back as defective.
Can any one advise?

The phone should indicate it is charging as it normally would.

I'll be sending the cable back. I wouldn't bother too much if it wouldn't supply the full resolution and such, but I'd at least would expect some output on my TV.

I love using MHL, but I really wish there weren't several varieties of MHL cables (5-pin, 11-pin, 1.0 and 2.0) and also such a large number of fakes and very low quality ones out there. Makes buying difficult, as all these threads about MHL demonstrate.
Does anyone know if you can physical see whether you have a 5 pin or 11 pin MHL 2.0?
