Since Android is open source, I decided to learn code and make my own ROM as a fun project. I found a guide on Android Authority on this topic. But they said I need a nexus device to flash my rom to test. I have a spare Samsung device. Is it possible to use this device for testing?

You don't gave to had a nexus device. The guide is pretty old. Googles first Pixel phone was launched 10 days before the video, so they still recommended a nexus.
Google nexuses had a device tree made for them and all the tools needed to build Android for it were available. Google Pixels do the same developments wise.
I don't know if you want to learn how to build a ROM like AOSP or LineageOS or you want to make your own custom ROM.
But you can find a tutorial on a YouTube channel called AlaskaLinuxUser. I would with his "where do I start" video. He explains a lot about what you should learn first.
The Android authority guide is extremely oversimplified.

You can use ANY device to test a rom, granted you have the device/kernel/vendor trees. Start off by building something like lineage, and then modifying stuff in the lineage source to make your own custom rom. The guide on androidauthority is way too simplified and only goes into the basics. Learn cherry-picking features using git

I know Its pretty dumb to ask after seeing a lot of tutorial here, But I really can't understand! My Device is a huawei ascend y300. I have lots of custom rom on various forums. So I wanna built one myself! One of the developer built cm 11 from source and he is rolling out nightly on a daily basis. My interest is to build the cm11 too on my own computer based on his device specific changes he has done. and he has done a lots of changes for our device. Also if I can make any other rom from its source based of his work like mokee rom, or slimbeam etc. ANy help is appriciated. thnk you
Hello!
I'd like to build my own rom from AOSP 8.0 official branch. I'm looking for some kind of guide but couldn't find any So, let's say I've got android source code and files from other custom rom that makes camera work. What have I to do to make my rom now? How can I build it and be sure that everything will work. Generally my target is to install android 8 on my Leeco le 2 x620 device with Mediatek chip
Any help is appreciated ^v^

"I'd like to build my own rom from AOSP"
So you mean an aftermarket os like lineageos or carbonrom or do you mean that you take the aosp repo and compile aosp for your device? You can look in source.android.com
"source code and files from other custom rom that makes camera work"
Is that an already compiled rom? Because you won't get source code out of that
"How can I build it and be sure that everything will work"
Ya don't. Nothing can ever be 100% bugfree, it can either be from your device tree's source code, or the aosp code itself.
Generally, if there is a caf tree for your device, it's going to be 3x as hard to create an aosp tree.
It is going to be 100000x as hard to create an aosp tree that is for a newly released, new hardware requirement operating system.
Wanna know the topping of the cake? Mediatek is notorious when it comes to releasing the source (in fact, it has become a meme in the Mediatek users world) but don't let that stop you son.
You can try, but don't give up just because it won't compile the first couple of hundred times. The errors when compiling should give you a great start
Good luck.

Oh God, how am I meant to do this ;0 There is Lineage 14.1 project on my device. I really want to have android 8 on my phone. Thank you for all the advice.
Yes im trying the same andere without any succes so far.
Im also trying to port from a different device ROM to the stock ROM what im running now.
The chip sets are the same but the Android versions not.
It would be really Nice if some mtk ROM developer find some time in his busy life to create a ROM for our phone.
Or a guide to compile/port Android o tot oud phone.
My question is really simple: How can I make an unofficial port of LineageOS? I've read this, which is based on an article from the (now death) CM Wiki, but some files (e.g. the mkvendor.sh script) are in older CM repos/branches. According to what I've read, there's not a full guide explaining the porting process since every device has its own tweaks (I imagine that it's due to ARM's nature)
What I want to do: Port LineageOS (the latest version) to the Samsung Galaxy Ace 4 Neo SM-G136ML (codenamed vivalto3mve3gltn). However there's not a LOS port at the latest version for a similar device which I could fork, so this would be "from scratch" in some way. I've seen Lineage's android repository at github but idk what are those xml files (they are definitively not the source code of a whole OS) EDIT: I realized that I had to clone it with `repo init`
What I've done so far: Documented myself as much as I could, read about how to get the vendor files, firmwares, kernel sources (in fact I requested the kernel source code for the device to the vendor), build.prop, recovery.fstab, and recovery/boot images.
My skills: I have a lot of experience with the GNU/Linux OS and I know some Linux kernel hacking, in fact I'm used to compile kernels for the x86_64, i686 and armv7h arch'es (not the vanilla kernel itself, but the Linux-libre kernel, which is basically vanilla but without binary blobs) and also patch them, and test them, etc. Besides kernel-stuff, I know shell scripting, advanced use of git (git clone, commit, add, push, remote, fetch, diff, apply, and more), use Heimdall, install custom recoveries and ROMs, and some advanced (non-noob ) Android hacking (Idk Java, C nor C++, however)
I know that here at XDA we've very talented developers who have experience with this, and much more. The only thing I need is some guidance to help me in my way to contribute the FLOSS community, I say this because when I asked in the LineageOS IRC channel if there was an official or well documented and updated guide, step-by-step, tutorial to port LOS that I could follow, someone answered me "it's impossible to have something like this", but I believe that there's ppl here who can demonstrate me the opposite
Thanks in advance
(...) I requested the kernel source code for the device to the vendor

Hi,
First of all, OnePlus do release their source code. But if you want to modify your phone and keep OxygenOS, you don't look it the right place.
With root you can have a lot more possibilities for customization, so I'll advice you to check Magisk (a root manager/ customization tool with which you can install modules).
If you want to theme your device you can use Substratum, and install themes from the Play Store.
Search about them and give them a try if you want to

thank u for getting back to me! i took a look at their github page but it said they stopped releasing the source code because it can be found elsewhere, and i cant find where exactly that is. i dont want to modify the OS as is (root it and customise that way), i mean getting the source code, changing, removing and adding things and then flash my own custom flavour of oxygenOS onto my phone. i figure going with what comes with my phone is best when getting into android development so that there are as few compatibility issues as possible. would you be able to point me exactly how i might obtain the source code? it would be very cool my dude

Check under the Android section on that page. Which specific OnePlus device do you have? There are many of them. I can help you find it if I know your model.

i see where you mean. but it seems like they stopped doing these releases. on their latest release (11 months ago) they said; "based on conversations we had with our dev community and the fact that we have only made few changes on AOSP(Qualcomm BSP) device tree, we will not be releasing AOSP device trees for future devices, the community can get the baseline from our device and get the source code from Qualcomm."
"the community can get the baseline from our device and get the source code from Qualcomm." i have no idea where to get what they are talking about.
i have the oneplus 8 pro

They're probably referring to CAF sources for the Qualcomm bit. The baseline part is probably a reference to the script that's in the Android section. This is the closest thing to what you're after that I can find.

ah yes. my brain has clicked with the baseline part, i would plug my phone in and it would use adb to extract the "baseline"? i understand this process. is what i am asking for difficult? perhaps i am better off taking the kernal files for my phone and integrating it with stock android that i would build and practicing with that? i really appreciate your effort but this "android blobs" is apparantly for reference only, i have no idea what android blobs is. i went into this knowing oneplus isnt extremely AOSP friendly compared to Sony for example, but i am going to push on. do you have any advice? this doesnt appear to be a friendly introduction into existing OS modification by sticking with OxygenOS
Hi folks,
I have a question. For many years I have been using many custom roms for many android devices (sony, samsung, xiaomi, motorola... with cyanogenmod, lineageos, aospextended, havocos etc etc...). I am the guy who likes tesing any of custom roms which appear in the forums.
For a long time I had a question in my mind: "How the hack the people prepare and build these custom roms, I want to be not only the user, but want to have the skills to build it my own"
Now I have joyeuse and I would like to try to build some custom rom by myself. Do you have any hints, tips, tutorials or howtos, where should I start with learning?
Thanks in advance
Have not done it myself.
But there are many tutorials on xda on how to setup your build environment.
Search on words combinations like: guide, build, compile, ubuntu, windows, ...
Or have a look into the different forum groups.
example:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/guide-build-port-miui-rom-to-device-t3250984
...
success!
thanks, but this is kinda outdated
Thanks for help, but I see this is 5 years old tutorial, so many changes have changed on android / miui design
Of course I googled it but not found anything pretty new and explanatory...w

i made a guide years ago. the overall process hasnt really changed just device specific files for the roms
https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/guide-how-to-compile-roms-zenfone-2-t3205312
so you'd ignore anything of the sources i linked for the zenfone and instead replace them with our devices sources. because we are so early on and things keep changing id suggest waiting till we have a proper recovery and are able to build from lineage from scratch.
also small differences in build dependencies like using the latest version of java and what not
