I know next to nothing about the idiosyncrasies of porting the GCam .apk onto a device, but does it seem feasible that we will get a version for Surface Duo?
This one *kind of* works. At least, you can get an image out of it. The result is promising even while the experience is jank.

I've went through about 100 trial and errors seeing which ports worked. This one is currently the BEST one for the non-PLAY Umidigi F1. I picked this phone up for $40 as a backup phone and I've been playing with it. What a difference GCAM makes on this phone. No Night Sight though.

Your link is down, did you find another gcam that was the best version?
I couldn't find a good one.
With the release of Android 10, we have yet to realize the state one ui will be in when Samsung gets around to the update, however my question being is one where porting might be an option from tab s4 to tab s3, or is it just custom roms until developmentally impossible? (the developmentally impossible part being unlikely)
I want to start a real conversation about advance compatibility porting, as is the issue with dex, if we could get a bare bones port started until we could make our own variants stable, just like we did with the google lens.
I understand the issues with infringements, and hard bricks, but I believe if we could make a port just like the one ui/pixel experience rom. [see thread(https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-fe/development/rom-team-pixel-pie-1-0-t3934106) for details] We could maybe port oem updates to different devices ((minding scaling and resizing issues) not the best example, I know).
Now I'm not too keen on porting whole oem updates from proprietary device to proprietary device, or even from oem apps, but maybe we could come up with a solution.
Any response will be appreciative.
Dear Fellow Android users and devs!
I've read online that the Cat s52, released winter 2019, has the same camera hardware as the Pixel 4.
Now, I thought that would be ripe for a Gcam port.
So, as I don't want to invest in a device with a bad camera yet, I've tried installing several recommended Gcam ports from celsoazevedo.com (versions 7.2 and 6.3/6.3) to the demo device at my local phone store, but each time the app straight-up crashed. It did allow me to set permissions, but that was it.
Should I have set something before or after installing? Am I missing something?
Thanks

PS: This is my first post on XDA, so let me also take this time to say Hi to all and make a short intro.
I work in electrical engineering and IT (in the field) and I often find myself knee-deep in water or mud .
For that reason, I've been eyeing Cat phones for a long time, but now that I've successfully bricked my Samsung, I think it's time to buy a rugged device.
Using BSG 8.1 it starts.
But Foto camera is only Black screen. Video works though...
So if anyone knows hot to easily setup GCam I'm up for some Tipps!
Using GcamGO is the only thing that works AFAIK
The Shamin one is quite decent:

I was wondering about something, to me it looks like the Pixel 6 and Pro camera module is the same except the extra camera for the Pro. If you were to get a broken Pixel 6 Pro, and took that camera module and put it into the Pixel 6. Could the zoom camera work? It may require tricking Google into thinking you have a Pro via software but I'm thinking it might be possible.
Feasible? Cost effective? Worth it? Probably not, at least right now.. More just something I'm curious about if anyone has any ideas?
Not just the module. Also the case. And the software mod would have to mix support for the p6p camera and p6 screen. Also there are other hardware differences. And then any software or security updates would force repeating the software changes, so would probaby be need to treated as a full custom ROM project...
Makes the price difference for a Google supported p6p with a warranty look ok
And the motherboard. The camera must be connected. It's not enough to just mount it.

Oh yeah, like I said it was just a thought I had after looking at both phones. Yeah, custom ROM would be the best bet.

That I wasn't sure about, I know it would be possible for them to both use the same connector. I haven't looked though, so probably not.
Any possible way to root? Bootloader unlock? Any possible GSIs and ROMs I could maybe get it to work?
I'd say it's a real decent device in it's category, but unfortunately it's modding support is really undocumented and lacking;(
I have only found and talked with the creator of this optimization/debloat guide for the Xiaomi TV Stick (non-4K, the old one) and have used most of his modifications (and learned what they can break, but not hard to fix since I can re-enable when I want that specific feature): https://sites.google.com/site/tweakradje/devices/xiaomi-mi-tv-stick
but they seem and I'd assume them to be pretty lacking for the much different and newer software the Xiaomi TV Stick 4K runs, so I'm open to any help and suggestions getting the most out of this device
