My wife needed a new phone and I saw the G2 on sale for 49.99 so I made the jump.
Gave my wife the S4 while I got the G2. So far I have mixed feelings about the G2.
1. Software/Hardware home button.
-When I type with the G2, I have a habit of accidentally hitting the home button when I try to hit the space bar. I know I'll get used to this but everytime it happens I always miss the hardware home button.
-I also miss it when i play games on the G2.
+Watching video is nicer on the G2 because the home buttons dissappear
2. Camera
-The camera on the S4 is a bit better IMO even though the G2 has OIS. I use my phone to take pictures of my son quite often and during low light. I notice the S4 excels quite a bit more in this aspect. You get blurred shots on both but get more good shots with the S4. It seems the senstivity of the camera sensor in the G2 is lower so it keeps the shutter open longer to grab more light. Has anyone used the AOSP camera? I'll gladly take darker photos than blurry ones.
3. Screen
+The IPS screen is definitely better than the AMOLED S4 screen when viewing head on. Brighter and cripser since it's not pentile. The only negative I can say about this is the viewing angles.. I work in a cubicle for 8hrs a day and am missing the old viewing angles of the S4 screen when the phone is on the desk. Not a big issue but I notice it.
4. Battery Life
-So far it seems like my G2 drains faster than my S4. I did just realize that I have alot of notifications options turned on in FB,YouTUBE, and other programs that I haven't turned off. I'll try that and see if it helps.
Overall, I like the G2 better but miss some of those aspects of the S4.
Numbers 1, 2, and 3 are just value judgement and it's hard to argue against things that are inherently based on personal tastes and/or sensitivities. However, with #4 you're just doing it wrong with your particular apps and settings and need to do some troubleshooting with wakelocks from rogue apps, or have horrific signal where you spend most of your time.

For number 4, root your phone and freeze/uninstall all the bloatware with titanium pro or install CWM Loki'd with CleanRom. I get 6.5 hours of screen time on CleanRom all the time with about 24-30 hours off charger time.

1. is purely subjective.
2. is a bit more objective. The shutter is noticebly slower than the S4
3. the viewing angles are alot better in AMOLED screens.. the usefulness of that is situational
I did want to also mention that the overall software on the G2 is less buggy than the S4.
+the bluetooth works better on G2. The S4 connected fine to my car('13 rav4) but the artist name/track name never showed up. I was not able to fastforward or rewind without doing so on the phone itself. With the G2 however everything works great.
+the IR remote IMO works alot better on the G2 as well. The S4's version allowed for volume/channel changes and power button. The G2's allow for that and more. Input, menus, and guides worked for me on the G2 software.
+sense drawer works better than the touchwiz. smoother and more customization.. although I usually end up using Nova Launcher afterawhile.
1. It takes some time to get used to.
2. In some cases, yes, it is.
3. Not that big of a deal.
4. Mine lasts two days whereas the S4 would last a day and a half tops (with crude powersaving measures).

Hi,
For me the A3 2017 replaces the S7 Edge (Exynos) which I have simply donated to my other half because I just got bored with it after 13 months of use (got it on the first day) and I really hate the S8 (small battery) and the S8+ (much taller than the S7 Edge and smaller battery - go figure). I needed a phone with very good battery life foremost, and a good notification system. And I thought: why not go minimal and cheap this time, until something better arrives, and not care about the phone all the time ? I got the phone for 260 EUR carrier-free. Why did I choose a Samsung phone ? Mostly because of the Always-On Display and the fact that I can use Package Disabler (without root) to disable packages that I don't need.
In short, what I like (compared to S7 Edge): compact and light (nice to have a compact phone again !), better battery life, active fingerprint sensor with front placement, better speaker placement, FM radio, flat screen. Always-On Display on such a cheap phone is also a great feature.
What I don't like: Lack of notification LED (although the AOD is plenty bright - unlike the one from LG G6, for example) , 2.5D glass makes a full-screen protector quite hard to find - even the official one is bad on corners (but much better luck than with S7 Edge anyway).
Screen:
It's a 4.7" 720p AMOLED with no issues regarding readability. I can't find any obvious flaws to it, to be honest. If you look really close (like from 5cm away) you can maybe see the pixels, but other than that it is really a good screen.
Performance:
First, I have to say I don't play games at all, I just use the phone for messaging, web browsing, email, occasional videos and about one hour of music daily. I am really surprised how fluid it is, there is no UI lag at all and web browsing is almost just as fast as on the S7 Edge.
Battery life:
Immediately after purchasing the phone, I used Package Disabler Pro to disable some 180 packages I also had disabled on the S7 Edge. This, combined with a dark theme, brought the battery life to even better figures than the S7 Edge, which is already known to be a battery life performer. I can routinely get 48 hours of stand-by with about 5 hours SOT, and that's with Always-On display turned on 18 out of 24 hours daily. I am amazed how a 2350mAh battery can do this.
Camera:
It's mediocre, to be honest. If you hold it very steady you can get some surprisingly good low-light pictures, but nothing comparable to the S7 Edge. Colors are also quite bad in daylight. But I don't use the camera except maybe once a month or so.
So I don't really care.
Speaker:
Perfect placement for me, closer to the ear and I don't cover it with my palm or fingers anymore. Plenty loud too, but the plastic back of the phone does contribute to some distortion at the highest levels.
Fingerprint sensor:
It was supposed to be an "active" sensor (not requiring pressing) but I had real issues at first with it. It worked maybe 1 in 10 tries. I finally figured out that it doesn't work with the finger tips like other sensors, you have to use an area below the finger tip for the fingerprints, then it works perfectly and it's very reliable and fast.
So these are my thoughts about the A3 2017. Below you will find some screenshots regarding battery life: almost 7 hours of SOT with 1 day and 17 hours of stand-by, and 1 hour of SOT (web browsing) with only 5% of battery. Remember, all the stand-by times are done with Always-On Display on 18 out of 24 hours.
Great view of yours..... am havin slight issue with my A7 2017 and maybe you can chime-in at my thread,

I've had a Note 2 then 4 since @ 2012-2013. I just bought a used Note 8 and have had it for @ 3 days. I really don't like it very much. I remember feeling like going from the the 2 -> 4 was unnecessary, but don't think I disliked the 4 when I first used it. I'm wondering if I just need to acclimate to it & tweak it to my preferences.
The camera seems awesome, I like the water resistance, I love having more RAM, fingerprint is great, otherwise:
-it feels more difficult to use
-it feels less intuitive opening multi window, using the settings menu, it feels like everything requires an extra 2-3 steps
-it doesn't feel noticeably faster to me in everyday use. Apps seem to take @ the same time to transition open, screen swiping feels about the same. Maybe it's noticeable under heavy use.
-it still takes 1:45 to charge
-the width feels much better in my hand, but I don't like the screen ratio. When using it as GPS in the car, it feels, at best, equal to the Note 4 (I think the 4's width is an advantage). It's really irritating that the top/bottom edges of videos get cut off when fullscreen. The screen color is nice.
-menu/back buttons are a wash. sometimes annoying, sometimes nice.
-i hate the s-pen pop out so far
I use my Note 4 mainly for:
-music + video playback over bluetooth earphones & connected to the car's head unit
-web browsing and/or youtube split screen
-S-Pen gets used almost daily (Note 7 stylus tips are awesome in the 4's pen!)
-GPS, I don't have many GPS problems or complaints about the receiver
-camera
I use the exclusive Note 4 features-
-swapping batteries (OEM + 2 Ankers/wall charger)
-IR transmitter @ 2-3x/week
I like that the Note 8 has-
-Awesome camera
-fingerprint sensor that you don't have to swipe
-more RAM. I haven't put it through the wringer with tons of open apps etc. Honestly I could just focus on shutting stuff down & clearing the phone more often, it's just a convenience.
-I really like pulling out the S-Pen and instantly writing on the lock screen. But pulling out the S-Pen is such a PITA compared to the 4, I think I would hate it for daily use.
-feels better in hand, I don't like the height so far.
-the curved front/back is a positive and negative
-the speaker sounds.. different. louder- i'm not sure if it's 'better'
I'm planning on reselling the 8 after 1-2 weeks. Any tips or suggestions before I do? I think I'll keep using the 4 for another few years. I've seen good reviews of the Pixel XL 2's speediness; but I have a 256gb microSD in my Note 4. I wish I could shave a couple mm's off the 4's bezels & give it some more powerful hardware. Thanks for any advice
Almost all your problems are solved in settings itself. Try to explore.

If you don't like the Note 8 & it's not for you, go ahead & sell it as planned. Everyone is different, no one here should convince you otherwise, they shouldn't have too, no point in asking our opinions, it's your preference. I went from Note 2 to Note 5. I'm not the type to upgrade every single year, not worth it IMO. Note 8 was a nice upgrade from the Note 5. I'm loving the Note 8, my favorite phone to date, but I'm also rooted with custom recovery so I can configure as I please, I can't live with out those features.

what I miss the most from the note 4 is the leathery back and the paint on the bezel that wasn't as likely to scratch or chip.
what I definitely do not miss is the 1 year life expectancy of the motherboard.
mine died from motherboard failure after about a year, it got repaired under warranty, and a year after I got it back it died from the exact same motherboard failure.
the note 8 feels more fragile on the outside, but I definitely wouldn't ever want to go back to the note 4.
I got the 8 and used it for a month or so. I them went back to the 4 for a couple of days thinking there wouldn't be much difference but in reality the 8 is so much better.
Although I wasn't a fan of the 18:9 display initially I do prefer it now and the 4 was also noticeably slower. Even with a new Anker battery the 8 out lasts the 4 by some margin.
I still have my Note 4 as a backup but definitely no going back for me.
A side from not having the user removable battery. I actually like the Note 8 more than I expected. It is fast, the design and features are very good. Just wished that Samsung Notes and S Note had the OCR function from the Note 8.
I had the Note, Note3, LG G4 (worst decision I've ever made) and now the Note8. When I got the Note3 I thought it was the best phone ever created, with so many good features that I liked. Now, having the Note8, I feel like this is the greatest phone ever made. There's nothing about the Note8 that I don't like.

Same as above, except for me I tried the LG V10 hated it.
Note 4 was my favorite so far. Obviously not withstanding technology advancement etc compared to the Note 8.

This is my 1st Note. I remember one of my colleagues had a note some years ago and I thought it was a monstrosity at the time. But he loved the thing and he would pull that S pen out and looked like he was having a ball. Now that I have one I understand that gleam in his eye. This device is just a great big beast of functionaliy and fun and hands down one of the best devices I've owned. Almost a year after purchase and it's running as smoothly as the day it was unboxed. I'm still on Nougat and Oreo has been sitting in the cue for weeks now. My phone runs great as it is now and I don't see anything that O has to offer that compels me to risk all of the problems others have had after upgrading. Anyone else?
I Have a note 3, a note 4, a note 7 and a note 8, the note 8 is obviously the best in every aspect, only thing I sometimes miss a little is the IR blaster, and of course the removable batt, but the water resistant feature gives you peace of mind, so, it is a ttade off, my note 4 has a a very annoying echo in calls, that would be my only complaint got tired trying to eliminate it

I wanted the V10, but it wasn't available in South Africa. The reason I went for the G4 and not the Note5, at the time, is because I wanted a slightly cheaper phone and the Note5 didn't have the SD Card storage feature, which was a deal-breaker for me.
I see a lot of people saying the Note4 is or was their favourite. I have a friend that still has a Note4 and an S8 and she says she still loves the Note4 very much. More than the S8. She basically just uses the S8 for Whatsapp and the Note4 for everything else.

Yep, Note 4 was lovely. Skipped the Note 5 for the same reason you did. Not being finiky, but I'd like to see some sort of future Note model without the curved edges. I don't think the curved edges have any purpose currently.

That's great you like it as it is but the big argument for upgrading is the security patches...
You might find a few little extra's included that need searching for too as they aren't paraded around or listed in the changelog...
Not saying you have to but I have never had any problem with upgrades - using a non-rooted Exynos 950F.
Sometimes the pay-off is worth the risk and sometimes not, I'll leave it in your hands to decide what to do with your toy...
The curved and TV-remote type of body is definitely lame and unnecessary for a gadget that is supposed to have notes taking as its strong point. Why not leave those for the Galaxy S family ? The inability to change/remove battery is a combination of planned obsolescence and surveillance dystopia. The absence of AOSP/Lineage/Resurrection ROMs is the price we have to pay for Exynos. Battery and standby time are mediocre but at least it charges fast and the camera is good enough. The stylus is as crap/cheap as ever.
The problem is that, with Note 4, you want to go with performance/Exynos; then you basically have an unsupported/abandoned mobile, even though LineageOS has been resurrected lately in XDA by @dl12345 (original work by @bonuzzz). And the damn thing typically runs too hot and often throttles. RAM is low too.
Note 5 was a downgrade in every regard.
Note 3 was my favourite and probably the best, at least regarding popularity/support/market impact. But no OIS, terrible camera performance by today's standards (especially if you got rid of Samsung ROMs in order to make sense for having it), and the phone's built quality leaves a lot to be desired (Note 4 was an improvement).
A Note 7/FE with removable battery and a better built stylus would have been the ideal phone for me but designers/marketers/managers at Samsung never have a clue.
My Note 4 died a view months ago so I bought a Note 8. Although it has more power and all I still miss my Note 4. I hate the round edges of my Note 8. It's a pain in the a.. to use it with remote desktop. Those edges are good for nothing. I also hate the fact that I can't replace the battery anymore. Now I have to carry a power bank with me, while before I just had a fully charged replacement battery with me.
Screen and power is very good, but the old screen was better as it has not had this silly aspect ratio. I want to show my pictures with my phone, but due to the silly aspect ratio, I have huge black borders left and right and the actual area feels smaller than on my Note 4.
So yes, I liked my Note 4 more, but the Note 8 is not a bad phone at all.
...
I've been always a Samsung Note user.
Since the first Note made by Samsung, I had most of the Notes. I basically like it's king-sized screen.
At the beginning, the Note was the smartphone with the biggest screen of all, so I bought it even though I didn't use the S-pen.
Lately I've been thinking on switching my Note 8 for the Samsung S10+ (similar screen size, but noticeable shorter and without s-pen (which I barely use), so I just went out there and bought the 1TB version.
Well, the word to describe my experience was: deception. I really didn't find any noticeable differences between the usage of the Note 8 and the S10+, other than cosmetical features. It makes sense as the Note 8 was (a couple of years ago) Samsung's flagship, so it should have enough processor power to still be a useable smartphone (as it is) nowadays.
I also thought
I didn't get the (what I call) 'WOW effect'. I only could appreciate the S10+'s performance running Antutu, where the S10+ of course almost doubled my Note 8 (31k points versus 16k I think).
The 'ultrasonic fingerprint reader' featured in the S10+ was convenient because it's located in the front screen (rather than the backside as is located in the note 8) but that was it. I didn't find it faster than the Note 8's fingerprint reader. I still find faster the Note 8's iris reader. I'm super-happy with the iris-reader as it can see even through my glasses and even mirrored sun-glasses.
I also thought that, with 1 terabyte of capacity, the S10+ could make longer super-slow motion videos, but no way. Just 2 seconds of super-slow-mo, just as the old Note 8.
So, in my opinion, the S10+ wasn't worth the thousand bucks I paid for, so as I had problems with the charger not functioning properly, and somehow disappointed by the lack of what I call 'WOW effect', I decided to return the phone and get a refund. I think I will wait to see the next Note 10...
Just wanted to share with you pals.
Hey, well I have both too, the exynos note 8 and snapdragon s10+, the only thing I love from the s10+ are the battery life, in my note 8 that has a 87% battery health lasts 4hrs sot and the s10+ gives me more than 6hrs sot. Other thing good is the selfie camera it looks great on the plus, the principal camera in my opinion looks very similar (I haven't tried yet the night mode). Besides those two things the note is really great. Heck is the phone I'm using right now.

So many good things. Quite a few bad. Loving the look and feel, disliking newly created contacts going missing, lack of a pattern/thumbprint unlock, battery life is, at best, ok.
Have had this phone for a few days coming from s10+. So far I love this phone. Size is perfect. Battery gets me through a full day for my usage. Camera is amazing and the 90hz display is incredible.
I like the industrial design the mat finish and the white and black colours are striking. Not a fan of the glitches caused by gesture navigations in some apps. And that battery is very disappointing. I have to top it up at least once a day. Not sure it's good for the battery in the long run. Tbh I don't notice the 90hz had the OnePlus 7pro for a minute and went back to the s10+ I really can't tell the difference between 60 and 90hz.???
Got the new Pixel 4
Pros:
-Display and flashing is gone from the Pixel 3
-Buzzing earpiece is finally gone and sound is clear
Cons:
-No fingerprint reader. Face unlock is a hit or miss
-under speakers, instead of front facing
-phone is slightly larger and heavier than pixel 3
.......overall i am glad I got the phone. The pixel 3 was the worst phone I own. The display failed on the original one i had after 5 months, the new and old display kept flashing, there was a perpetual earpiece buzzing that was from likely hardware quality. The pixel 4 is an improvement. I think the best pixel was 2. The front facing speakers, display was fine for me, and size/weight.
Glad to have the pixel 3 gone. That was a total lemon.
I noticed the camera switches back to the wide lense if the subject is too close and can't focus, even when using 2x+ and uses super res zoom instead.
Quite a few bad. Loving the look and feel, disliking newly created contacts going missing, lack of a pattern/thumbprint unlock, battery life is, at best.
Just Google. By Google.
Just bought this phone as an alternative to my galaxy fold when in environments that might not be too "fold friendly" (still love the Fold though) Waited a year post launch and price has dropped considerably, outstanding device, easy to use with all the features I need!
